::Chapter Twenty-Three: Back Down the Rabbit Hole::

I shouted, "Three, two, one... JUMP!" Inu Yasha, Tatsuya, and I all jumped into the well at the same time. Multiple shades of blue mixed in with white engulfed us as we passed through time. I felt Tatsuya tighten his grip on my hand. But I was scared too, my first time down the well. I glanced over at Inu Yasha. His face was full of anticipation and anger. He was really ready to fight. After a few more seconds, we landed. But we were ankle-deep in ashes. Inu Yasha and Tatsuya both immediatle started coughing and sheilding their noses. I asked, "What's going on?" Inu Yasha coughed, "Cover your face! Don't breathe!" I covered my nose and shouted, "What is it?" Inu Yasha said, "Poison. Humans can't smell it. Just try not to breathe so much."

Tatsuya coughed and fell on his knees. I went up to him and gave him a handkercheif, "Use this. Please be careful, Naraku could be doing this." Inu Yasha grabbed my wrist, "We have to get away from here." I looked at Tatsuya. He struggled to get up, but he finally did and he leapt out of the well. Inu Yasha helped me get out. We ran until we reached the area where Kaede's village was. The poison hadn't gotton this far. Surprisingly, the village was still standing. Inu Yasha smiled, "Looks like the old witch hasn't let her guard down!" I playfully punched Inu Yasha's arm, "She's not a witch, she's a preistess. Obviously she used her miko powers to protect the entire village from Naraku." Tatsuya looked confused, "Okay, sorry, but I have no idea about anybody you guys are talking about." Inu Yasha said, "Kaede is an evil witch who eats little children and concocts ideas to take over the world." I said, "Inu Yasha, Sit." He plummeted into the ground, "What was that for!?" I smiled and corrected his description of Kaede, "Kaede just so happens to be a very nice woman who is very powerful. She is very wise and she taught me a lot about healing and my powers. She is not evil, nor does she eat little children." Tatsuya nodded, "Gotcha." Inu Yasha had pried himself from the dirt, "Whatever, let's check up on the old hag."

Inu Yasha stopped about twenty feet from Kaede's house. Tatsuya kept walking. A sudden force seemed to have blown him back about twenty feet. Inu Yasha smirked, "Kaede's sharp as ever." I said, "It's probably just a demon warding sheild." I walked past the barrier and knocked on Kaede's door. The door opened and Kaede came out, "Kagome? Oh Kagome, it's been so long!" I smiled , "Hi Kaede. I came back here with Inu Yasha and Tatsuya." "Tatsuya?" "We think he's Inu Yasha's reincarnation." Kaede raised an eyebrow, "Interesting. Where are they?" I said, "Inu Yasha's right next to your barrier and Tatsuya was just blown back a couple of yards by it." Kaede said, "Oh my goodness. I'll open the barrier for them to pass." She saw Inu Yasha and closed her eyes, bringing her hands together as she chanted. A small hole came through the barrier and Inu Yasha hopped in, closely followed by Tatsuya.

Everybody piled into Kaede's house. Kaede said, "Inu Yasha, you look a bit thin." He rolled his eyes, "Feh." Kaede shook her head, "It's best that you keep in your best shape. I assume you only came back to face Naraku. You need all of your strength." I nodded, "Yeah. Naraku's not going to make this battle easy." Kaede looked over at Tatsuya. He started coughing again. Kaede asked, "Is everything alright?" Tatsuya said, "Yeah. I think I just got a bit a poison in me." Kaede said, "Something that may seem small such as this should not be ignored. Knowing Naraku, the actual effects of this poison may be critical." She walked over to her small fireplace and took out a small ketle that was boiling. She prepared various herbs and poured the hot water into it. Once it had become a tea, she gave it to Tatsuya, "This should eliminate the last traces of the poison. Drink it all." Tatsuya chugged it and scrunched his eyes shut, "It's really bitter." He coughed a little bit, but then he quieted down."

Kaede took a closer look at Tatsuya, "It just may be possible that you are indeed Inu Yasha's reincarnation. But if he has a reincarnation, that means..." Inu Yasha sighed, "Yeah, I know. It means I'll die eventually. But I guess that's how it's meant to be. I mean, everybody dies, it's a way of life. I'm just glad I lived. Lucky to be a hanyou so I can live longer than any human can. So, I suppose I'll be ready when the time comes. Just as long as Naraku's dead before I am." He smirked after his last statement.Keade smiled, "It's nice that you've given that fact much thought. Many who have come to know you wouldn't have expected such a speech." Inu Yasha growled, "What are you talking about? Are you saying I just don't think? That's mean for an old lady to say." Kaede just laughed, "Calm yourself. It just seemed that you wouldn't express yourself so clearly for once. You really are a nice boy." Inu Yasha rolled his eyes, "Feh."

After another hour, Kaede served us all a big lunch. A few of the villagers dropped by. We all ate, talked, and laughed. It was really fun. Finally, a villager asked, "So, how do you three plan to take down Naraku on your own?" Inu Yasha kept quiet. I guess he didn't want to say that he didn't really have much of a plan. Tatsuya was too busy eating to hear the question properly. I sighed and said, "We're going to see if any of our other friends and allies have survived. We're hoping that they will help us." All of the villagers sunk their heads sadly. One of them said, "Don't be to sure that they will. Most villages with a preistess as strong as Kaede have fallen. And many of the most powerful demons have been terminated by Naraku." I smiled, "Well, our demon friends are all very powerful and confident. I'm sure they didn't give up."

Eventually all of the villagers left. Kaede gave me a large bundle, "I hope this will help you three if anything goes wrong." Inu Yasha nodded acknowledgably, "Thanks Lady Kaede." Kaede smiled, "Don't start using such formality because you think this is the last time you'll get to see me. You must come back after you defeat Naraku or I will be very upset." Inu Yasha laughed, "Okay ya old hag. We'll come back." Kaede patted his head, "That's better. Be confident, and do not let your guard down. Naraku is a very sneaky being and will stop at nothing to defeat you." She turned to Tatsuya, "I hope your journey is safe so you may come back. We can get to know each other better." Tatsuya nodded, "I'll be sure to come back. No need to worry." We turned and exited the barrier. Kaede waved goodbye before going back into her house.

Inu Yasha scratched himself behind his ear, "Uh, so who should we try to find first?" I thought for a minute, "I'm sure Kouga would agree to come if I asked him. Maybe we should try to convince your brother to come though." Inu Yasha closed his eyes and crossed his arms, "Fine. I don't see why he has a reason to attack me since Tetsusaiga's gone." I smiled, "I'm pretty sure we'll get him to agree. I mean, it is destroying Naraku after all." Inu Yasha agreed, "Yeah, not many people would pass on a chance to do that." Tatsuya grinned, "I can't wait until we can beat the crap out of Naraku." Inu Yasha grinned with equal smugness, "That's the kind of attitude we need here. I like how you think."

Inu Yasha carried me on his back as Tatsuya ran alongside him, following. Nightfall came soon. I was getting tired, "Inu Yasha, can we stop and set up camp?" Inu Yasha nodded and stopped in a clearing in the woods. He realized something after we stopped, "Kagome, you didn't bring a pack with you?" I shook my head, "I'm not going to lug that thing around in the middle of a battle with Naraku. I just brought a small first aid kit. It's pretty much the only thing we might really need." "So how are you going to sleep?" "I think I can survive after roughin' it for a night." Inu Yasha shrugged, "Whatever." He didn't really show that he cared, but he was still nice enough to collect a large amount of soft leaves for me while Tatsuya left to collect firewood. Luckily, they moved very quickly so we were ready to sleep in only a half an hour. Tatsuya and Inu Yasha both looked off for trees to sleep in. I laid down and tried to get comfortable. but something just didn't feel right. I kept wiggling around. Inu Yasha called from his treetop, "Kagome what's wrong? you got bedbugs or something?" I finally figured it out, "I'm not used to camping out without Shippo sleeping next to me." Inu Yasha sighed, "Well, you're gonna have to make do without Shippo. He's not here anymore, I'm sure you've gotten over it already." I said, "Yeah I have. It's just that I miss him." "Well I miss the little runt too." I blinked. Since when did he really openly say he cared for Shippo? I guess he was like his little child in a way, taking care of Shippo and discipilining him because he didn't have a father to teach him the same way. I decided not to bring Shippo up again.

The next morning Inu Yasha woke me up bright and early with a large dead rabbit hanging over his shoulder, already skinned and cleaned, "Cook it. We need food." I prepared the rabbit and left it over the fire, giving directions to Inu Yasha to make sure it didn't burn or anything. Meanwhile, I left to collect some vegetables we could eat. Unfortunately, the only berries I could find were the poisonous kind Kaede told me about. So I marched back to camp empty-handed. Inu Yasha was already ripping off a large chunk of meat from the rabbit with his claws. He handed it to me, "Eat it fast. Me and Tatsuya already ate." Tatsuya was busy licking his fingers from the meat. I quickly ate the meat. And after that, we abandoned our camp and set out for th remaining three hours of trail to the western lands.

Tatsuya asked, "What's Sesshomaru like?" I said, "He's not all that bad. He doesn't like to show expression, and he's extremely powerful. But he used to travel with a small human girl, so I'm sure his heart has some kindness in it, though he won't show it." Inu Yasha spat, "Sure he's nice. Especially towards his one and only little brother. He tried to kill me countless times Kagome!" I smiled, "Ah, but he has never killed you, has he?" Inu Yasha rolled his eyes and continued to run in silence. Tatsuya sighed, "I just hope I'll figure out some of this stuff before we meet Naraku. I don't want to be totally clueless when we face him."

When we got to the Western territory, Inu Yasha stopped, "I smell blood. A lot of it." He set me down and we slowly walked through piles of rubble and bones. Inu Yasha winced at the sight, "I thought Sesshomaru's army was the strongest." Tatsuya tried not to look at any of the corpses beneath him. Eventually we saw a makeshift hut. Inu Yasha knocked on the small door, "Hello? Is anybody here?" The door opened slowly to reveal a teenaged girl with raven black hair in a spiked side-ponytail. She smiled and said, "Sesshomaru-sama! We have guests!"
