Chapter Three: Power Talk

Detective Narita sat in his office in downtown Tokyo. On his desk was the complaint. He did not want to look at it. He knew what it was and he did not want to get involved. However, he didn't have much choice.

He sighed as he picked the folder up. Mrs. Higashi had filed a missing persons report on her daughter, Asakura. More importantly, she had also claimed Tomo to be the abductor.

This was not the way things were supposed to happen. Demons were supposed to keep to the shadows, taking what they needed and leaving the rest alone. However, Tomo had decided to go a step further.

"He is the most powerful of his kind," a fellow demonslayer had commented. "Are you sure he's not taking advantage of that?"

It was true. There was no spider demon in existance who was more powerful then Tomo. But, for some reason, Narita didn't think that was the case. He had watched Tomo with the girl in question. Narita didn't understand, but he knew it wasn't a power trip.

Tomo was protecting the girl.

That was obsurd, though. Spiders didn't protect anyone, especially humans. They didn't even protect their own young. So, what was Tomo's interest in this girl?

Tomo had always been a strange one. It was humored that the spider demon had fallen in love with Rin, daughter of Sesshomaru, Lord of the Western Lands. Tomo was powerful, yet he preferred to teach in a classroom and live a simple lifestyle. He didn't indulge in the life of luxury like many powerful demons were known to do. At the same time, he got whatever he wanted, when he wanted it.

"Narita, line two," came the voice of the demonslayer's chief.

Narita sighed and picked up the phone. "Hello?" he answered. Great. The woman's lawyer. "Yes, sir, I know of the complaint... Sir, there really isn't much we can do... I don't think you understand... Well, what is her problem anyway? The man is offering to pay for her child's education... Yes, I understand that. She is young, but still... If you believe the court will force Mister Tomo to give up the girl, I say go for it... Arrest him for what?... Kidnap and rape? The girl went willingly with him. And she willingly slept with him... She may be young, and underage, but she is old enough to make decisions like that for herself... Tell your client to take it to court.. No, I can't... Because she won't go willingly. I can't force the girl to return to her parents...

"Sir, even if I arrest him, I can't do anything with her... You force that girl away from him and she will rebel!... You don't know Tomo. We aren't talking about some creep off the streets. The man has power and money... You do what you have to do, sir, and let us do our jobs... The most I can do is talk to her. I'm not going to force her to do anything she doesn't want to do... That's perfectly fine, sir. You do that... Yes, I'll make sure Mister Tomo knows... Good day to you too," he finished, hanging up the phone.

He wanted to throw that phone. Narita wasn't a violent man, but some people tried his patience. Sighing, he picked the reciever up again and dialed the number to Tomo's house. He knew the spider demon wouldn't be happy to hear from him...

But, the spider wasn't home. Rolling his eyes, Narita left a message to have Tomo call him back immediately. He then leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. This was going to be a long night.

Tomo glared at Edward. He hated it when the rat began talking about his personal life. It didn't matter to the spider whether others knew already or not.

They were sitting at the demon restraunt, one of Tomo's favourite eat-outs. Rin was there with Shippo, and Edward had his mate. Seated next to Tomo was Asakura.

Rin laughed and playfully patted at Tomo's arm. "Don't look so harsh," she scolded. "You know Edward is only joking with you."

"When is your wolf friend supposed to be here?" Tomo asked the girl.

Rin shrugged. "He's probably waiting for Riko. She's got this habit of taking more time then necessary to get ready."

The spider shrugged and sipped at his sake. It really didn't matter to him one way or the other. He wasn't really hungry, at least, not for this sort of food. What he really wanted was a human. He wrapped an arm around Asakura's waist and kissed her on the lips.

"So, when is she starting school?" Elizabeth asked, indicating Asakura.

Tomo gave a bored shrug. "I have to get custody of her first. Her old school won't give up her papers to me because I'm not her legal guardian," he told them.

"Have you talked to her parents?" Edward asked, eating a piece of fried squid.

Asakura snorted, "Yeah, that went over real well. My mom was so ready and happy to see me away."

"So, what are you going to do?" Rin asked. "You can't keep her out of school. I mean, you probably could. You are a teacher and you could teach her at home, but I highly doubt what you teach her at home will be anything she'll learn in school."

Tomo gave the princess a seductive smile. "She's learning plenty at home already," he assured her.

"TMI, Tomo," the girl responded.

Hokochi and Riko showed up then. Elizabeth and Shippo made a spot for the wolf couple to sit between them. "Hey, Rin, how'd you do on Ideka's test?" Hokochi asked as Riko ordered them drinks.

Rin gave him a "duh" look. "What do you think?" she retorted.

He laughed, "Do you ever make anything lower then an A?"

"Do I really want to see my father's face if I did?" she shot back.

This time, the whole table, save Asakura, laughed. Shippo patted his mate on the back. "I could imagine Sesshomaru's face," he chuckled. Using his illusion abilities, he took on Sesshomaru's face. Complete with shocked look.

This brought even more laughter from the table and Asakura found she couldn't help but join in. She was amazed at the fox's ability. She looked at Tomo as she asked, "Do all demons have special powers? Like Shippo's illusions?"

The spider looked at her curiously. "Our powers are not all the same. Each demon's powers are designed to help the demon to survive," he answered.

Edward nodded in agreement. "I wouldn't even truly call them powers in some cases," he added. Seeing the look on Asakura's face, he decided to elaborate. "You've seen rats before, correct? Not necessarily a rat demon, but a normal everyday rat," he asked. Upon her nod, he continued, "Think of the rat, only bigger. Their senses are more in tuned with the world around them, but their abilities remain the same."

"So, you're telling me that all you are is a giant rat?" the teenager questioned, drawing a laugh from Rin. "If Shippo is nothing more then a giant fox, then how is it he can create illusions? That's not a fox trick."

"Are you sure?" Shippo pried, giving her an inquisitive glance. "Foxes are known for their cunning and slyness. Are you certain it is nothing more then illusion?"

Asakura grew indignant. "A fox cannot change shape. Nor can it give the illusion that it is anything more or less then a fox. You just changed your appearance to look like Rin's father. Illusion or not, I highly doubt a fox can do the same thing."

Edward smiled as he patted Asakura's shoulder, trying to calm her down. "Shippo is much larger then a fox, my dear. Think of a fox, only bigger. His senses are more in tuned with the world around him, but his abilities remain the same. Foxes have the ability to create illusion, just not the sense. Fox demons have that sense."

Rin sighed, "It can be confusing. Especially when you get to the more powerful demons. While Shippo is quite powerful, there is at least one fox demon who is even more powerful," she told the girl.

"That is when power comes into play, Rin," Tomo stated. "The basic demon starts off with what Edward said. Their senses being in tuned with the world. But, as a demon grows, so does his power. In most cases, the power is just enough to help him survive. However, in such cases like the Lords, or other powerful demons, it becomes more."

The rat demon nodded, then he tilted his head at Tomo. "I've always wondered why you are not a Lord. As powerful as you are, you could take such a seat. No one would keep you from such a claim."

Tomo snorted, "What reason would I have for that?"

"Why bother gaining power if you do not plan on using it?" Elizabeth piped in. "I've been curious about this as well, Tomo. You are the most powerful of your kind. By rights, you should be a Lord. Complete with mansions, castles, and anything you wish."

"I have everything I wish," he shot back with a growl.

Shippo gave a mischievous grin. "Are you sure?" he asked, mysteriously.

"We spiders do not need much..."

"Oh, save the bullshit for someone who'll buy it," Edward snapped. "I know full well that most of your kind prefers the life of luxury. Expensive homes, furniture, and cars. Everything as modern as possible. And big. The bigger, the better."

Tomo shook his head. "That's Naraku's doing," he informed. Tomo sighed, "Ever since that spider hanyou became... whatever he became, spiders had thought they had to live up to those standards. Before Naraku, spiders lived quiet lives in the shadows. Never daring to come out into the light. We take our kills and keep the moon as our sun."

Asakura slipped a hand under Tomo's arm. "Sounds like vampires," she whispered in his ear.

Shippo's ears perked at that. He had heard the girl's comment. "What's a vampire?" he asked, never having heard of one.

Asakura's face paled slightly. She hadn't realized his ears were that good. Upon looking at the wolves and rats, she realized all demons had good hearing like that. She should have known. Didn't Edward just compare demons to animals? She thought about it a moment, wanting to be sure of the right answer.

Then, she had it. "Tomo," she answered. Seeing the confusion on all the demons' faces, she elaborated, "Tomo is the perfect example of what humans belief to be vampires. A vampire is an immortal person who drinks the lives of humans to stay alive. They come out only at night, for they do not like daytime."

As she thought about it, it began to make sense. "The world is not plagued with vampires. It's plagued with demons!" she said, laughing.

Apparently the others didn't get the joke. She waved her hand. "I don't know when, exactly, the legend of the vampire started. I think it had something to do with some human lord in Europe. He had made a sport out of killing humans and drinking their blood.

"The more I think about it, the more it sounds like demons. They say that if a vampire bites a human, but does not kill them, the human will become a vampire. Isn't that kind of like the way a demon claims their mate? And spider demons sound an awful lot alike vampires..."

Edward sat back and thought this over. He had never heard of a vampire before. If what the girl was saying was true, then he wondered where the legend had started. "Where did you find this information from?" he asked her.

Asakura shrugged. "Just Google it. The net has tons of vampire websites and books and stuff. Just be careful where you go. There are a lot of humans who believe themselves to really be vampires... Then again, those 'vampires' might actually be demons."

"It sounds like something a few demons would take advantage of," Shippo agreed. "Especially the less powerful ones."

"The only difference is, vampires are considered undead and they sleep in coffins," Asakura told him.

Shippo snapped his fingers and turned to Rin. "Kikyo would have been considered a vampire."

Rin laughed, but shook her head, "Kikyo took souls, she didn't drink blood."

"There are vampires who take souls," Asakura revealed. "Or, I should say, your essence... same thing."

Rin shrugged. She found the whole vampire talk just as confusing as demons. It didn't matter anyway. Apparently vampires were just legend.. myth.

Asakura changed the subject. "What exactly is a Lord? I know Rin's father is Lord of the Western Lands, but what does that mean exactly?"

Tomo rolled his eyes, but decided to answer the question, "It means that Sesshomaru controls all the lands of Japan to the west. Whether the humans know this or not, isn't really a concern. Years ago, it was. Being a Lord meant you had power over both the demons and humans within that area. Now, it means you have control over the demons. The responsibilities of the Lord remain the same."

"And those responsibilities would be..." she pried.

"Defending your territory, your people, making sure your people do not fall into poverty," he told her. "Plus, much more."

Asakura sighed, "I can understand why you wouldn't want such responsibility. Not that you couldn't handle it, but why go through all that trouble?"

"Because as the most powerful spider demon, he should do so," Edward argued, getting a bit heated. "He knew that the more powerful he became, the more likely demons would call upon him to take up responsibility."

Tomo snorted, "You talk too much, Rat. Even if I wanted to become Lord, I couldn't. There is no land for me to take over."

"And all that Naraku controlled?" Hokochi asked, indicating that there was still land that was unclaimed. Since Naraku's demise, those lands had been unprotected.

"I am not Naraku's heir," the spider whispered dangerously.

Riko snorted, "You told us you were his cousin. If this is true, then you are his only surviving relative. That makes you his heir. Eventually, you will have to take it up. It belongs to you now, Tomo."

The spider shook his head. Standing up, he took Asakura's hand. "Come. We are leaving," he informed her.

Edward snarled as he hopped out of his own seat. "Do as you will, Spider! Eventually the Lords of Japan will come to you and they will demand you take it. Especially if they learn of your relation. Already, one Lord knows. Think about it. You cannot run and hide forever."

Tomo led Asakura out of the restraunt and to his car. He got into the driver's seat and drove silently home.

Asakura thought over everything that had happened. She could understand not wanting the responsibility, but she did not believe that was the reason Tomo didn't want the lands. If anything, the spider demon enjoyed responsibility. To him, it was challenging and gave him something to do. So, why didn't he want to become a Lord?

She thought it might have something to do with this Naraku guy, though she had no clue who he was. Tomorrow, they would be going to Tomo's school. Asakura will have to sneak away to the library to see if there is anything there about this Naraku. For now, she would have to wait.

They got out of the car and heading into the house. Asakura shed off her jacket and placed it on the coat rack. She watched as Tomo threw the keys on the coffee table and sat in his recliner. He grabbed the remote, but before he could turn the television on, she stepped in front of him.

"I don't know who Naraku is. Nor do I know what happened between you two," she said. "And I honestly don't care. From what I can gather, he was not a very good person. But, you are not him. Your name is Tomo. How much longer will you allow yourself to live in Naraku's shadow?"

With that, the girl walked into the bedroom and shut the door.

I apologize for the delayed update. In all honesty, I've just been real busy with work and by the time I get home, I'm too tire to write out chapters. I promise I will update as quickly as I can. I won't let any chapters go for longer then a week.
