Tomo's Girl

Chapter Nine: Surprises
Tomo slammed the door as he entered the house and threw his coat on the hanger. He heard her in the kitchen and was swift to move.
Before she could do anything, he had her pressed against the wall and was glaring into her eyes. His hand held her by the neck as he lifted her off the ground. "I should kill you!" he growled. "It would be so simple. A quick flick of my wrist and you would be dead."
Asakura struggled in his grasped and snapped back through clenched teeth. "Then, why don't you? If it would be so simple, then do it!" she challenged.
He dropped her carelessly onto the floor. "Why the hell did you leave the courtroom? Do you realize that, by your action, we could've lost the cast that quickly?!" he snarled.
She picked herself up and dusted herself off. Then, she tore her blouse off of her and showed him the mark he had given her. "This! Right here means, they can't take me away from you!" she shouted. "Let them say what they will. We are bound, Tomo! We are mates! And I will not let anything, not even some fucking court order, keep us apart!"
Tomo gave a frustrated sigh and stepped towards her. He pulled her into an embrace and led her into the living room. Sitting her onto the couch, he looked into her chocolate eyes. "It is not that simple, Asakura," he whispered, caressing her soft cheek. "Yes, we are mates. But, humans do not know that. Sure, demons and hanyou do. Even demonslayers would know. But, we have to play this by human rules. Besides, Taki said something to me today after you left..."
She looked at the spider demon curiously and waited for him to continue. Not able to look at her, he looked, instead, at the coffee table. He took a deep breath and let his gaze go to her lap. Ever so slowly, he brought his gaze upward.
Asakura wasn't as skinny as Rin or the Lady of the Western Lands. She was more muscular then anything. Under her clothes, she had an outline of a six pack and perfectly formed breasts. Her arms held clear evidence of muscle. Her raven hair fell straight and true down to the middle of her back. He knew that, while she seemed to be careless about her things, her appearance was clean. Her hair was cut straight across and even, rather then layers or waves, like many girls her age favoured.
She was practical, as was her dress. Though she liked her skimpy clothing, she also wore nice clothing. Clothing that spoke character and daring. She kept herself clean and well kept, never skippy a shower, no matter how tired she was.
But, it was her eyes that had caused Tomo to fall in love with her. They spoke her personality more clearly then anything else on her body. Those deep, chocolate orbs threatened to bring one into their depths with no hope of return. Many times, the spider demon found himself falling into those orbs before kissing her full lips.
No, she wasn't the skinniest person in the world. Nor was she the prettiest, but in Tomo's eyes, she was the most beautiful creature he had ever known. No matter what she did, he knew he would never truly hurt her. He belonged to her just as much as she belonged to him. She was his Lady.
"Spiders don't take mates," he told her, his voice barely above a whisper. "We just... don't. The oddity of our pairing brought many questions to Taki. Though, she was happy for us, she couldn't understand why I did what I did. Furthermore, she didn't understand my attraction to... a ningen. She told me that the other lawyer will be focusing on that from now on. He will try to make it seem like what we did was foolish and wrong. We have to prove that it's not. That we truly love one another. Though you made a good point, your storming out did not help matters."
Asakura smiled. "Then, we need backup. We need to get some witnesses. People who know us as a couple," she suggested.
"I will not bring Rin..."
"You don't have to," she interrupted him. "Because, I'm going to.... Look, Tomo. We need her. Who better to testify then those who know us best? Besides, you know, if she ever needed your help for anything, you'd be there in a flash. No questions asked. Let her do the same for you..."

Rin knocked on her parents' bedroom door. She heard her father's called and entered the room.
"Rin? What is it, darling?" Kagome asked, sitting on the bed.
Sesshomaru sat at his desk, finishing up a letter he had been writing.
"Momma," Rin began, "you know Tomo and Asakura have that trial they are doing, right? The one that decides whether she goes with her parents or stays with Tomo?"
"He's a Lord now. And she is his Lady. They can't take her away from him," her father's voice said, simply.
Rin nodded. "Yes, Father. I know this. But, that won't stop them from trying. Asakura called me and asked if we could go to the trial tomorrow. Possibly even testify?"
Kagome smiled. "I would be honoured to testify."
Sesshomaru looked up from his parchment. "What would be the point?" he asked. "We know he has the case. Anyone who didn't hand him over the girl would be an idiot."
"Daddy, the judge is a rabbit," Rin told him.
Sesshomaru snorted, "All that tells me is that Lord Tomo is sure to win. Otherwise, I know many Lords who would take a rabbit for lunch..."
"Daddy!"
"Sesshomaru!" Kagome shouted, standing up. "This trial is being done among humans."
"Then, kill them," he said callously. "They are only humans."
"We are talking about her parents, Sesshomaru," Kagome yelled, not liking the way he was speaking. Sure, he didn't like humans in general, but that was no excuse for his word now.
"Parents that wish to separate her from her mate," he whispered. "You will refrain from raising your voice, Lady Kagome. She is the Lady of the Mountain. Lady Asakura. There is no need for her to be with her parents any longer."
Kagome snorted. "Fine, Lord Sesshomaru. But, I'm still going to that trial. After all, Tomo is a Lord and Lords and Ladies should stick together. Whether or not he's going to win, shouldn't be an issue."
Rin looked at her parents. She knew they would make up once she was out of the room. For whatever reason, they enjoyed arguing with one another. She assumed it was because of the make up session.
But, the mere idea of her parents "making up" sent shivers down her spine and she almost felt like vomiting. She smiled at her parents. "So, it's settled then? Are we going to the trial?" she asked, hopefully.
Sesshomaru waved his hand to dismiss the subject and Rin squealed. She knew that, by his dismissal of the issue, he had agreed to go. She kissed her mother on the cheek and hurried out of the room to find Shippo. She knew her mate would want to be there as well.

Edward and Elizabeth stepped into the courtroom. They were both decked out in matching midnight blue business suits. Edward wore a tie that depicted an European angel and devil in an immortal battle. They took a seat on the defendant side.
Edward smiled at Taki. "Hello, Miss Tiki," he greeted.
The bird smiled and chirped, "Greetings to you as well, Peabody. Coming to testify?"
He nodded and her smile grew brighter.
Tomo and Asakura entered the courtroom and the girl shrieked. She ran to the rat demons and threw her arms around the demoness. "Elizabeth! Edward! It's so good to see both of you!" she exclaimed as she let go of the demoness and hugged Edward.
Edward blushed and gently pulled away. "As it is you, Lady Asakura," he said, reminding her of her station.
She giggled. "I think we are passed formalities, Edward," she told him. "Asakura is just fine."
"Not in court, my lady," Elizabeth corrected. "If you wish to be convincing, then, you must be formal."
The teenager nodded and clasped Edward's hand one last time before taking her seat next to Taki. Tomo kissed the back of Elizabeth's hand and then shook Edward's. "Any word from Rin or her family?" the spider demon asked.
Edward shook his head. "But, don't lose heart, my lord. I'm sure they'll be here. Lord Sesshomaru likes to make an entrance," he informed.
Tomo nodded and was somewhat better. Though, he was still a little nervous. He took his place next to Asakura. He kissed her on the forehead and she leaned into him. He didn't know what it was, but there was something different about her today. She seemed... more at ease. This made him nervous.
The Higashi's entered the courtroom followed by their lawyer. The kitsune stopped and looked at Asakura. His eyes widened suddenly, but then, he shook it off and continued to his seat. He continued to look at Asakura, not believing what he was witnessing.
"You can stop looking at her now," Tomo growled through clenched teeth.
The kitsune quickly turned to his clients and began conversing with them in quiet tones.
"Please rise! The Honourable Judge Midoshi continuing the case of Higashi vs Lord Tomo is now in session."
The judge entered the courtroom and took his seat. "You may be seated," he told the court. He looked up at Asakura and smiled. "I see you decided to join us today, my lady. Do you intend to stay?"
Asakura nodded her head. "Yes, Your Honour."
"And are you feeling well?" he continued.
She looked at him curiously. Could he really tell? "I... I feel a little nauseous, but I think it might have been something I ate..." she commented.
The judge raised an eyebrow. Surely she knew her own body better then that? He knew the spider demon wouldn't have realized it, but she was a female... He took note of this, but said nothing further. He knew it would be brought up before the end of the day.
"Mrs. Tiki? Your first witness?" he stated, getting down to business.
Taki stood up and straightened her dress. "Your Honour, I would like to call to the stand..."
She was interrupted when a loud bang brought the court doors open and the great Lord of the Western Lands entered the courtroom. His wife and family followed behind him. He looked at the guard with narrowed eyes.
The guard, shaking with fear, announced, "Lord Sesshomaru of the Western Lands and his Lady, Kagome."
The inu taiyoukai continued down the stretch of the room. He stopped before Asakura and looked at her. A single eyebrow was raised, but he said nothing. He knew she didn't know. For she was a mere human. He nodded once to her before approaching the witness stand.
"My lord, do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?" the judge asked.
Sesshomaru gazed up at him as if he was stupid. As if the Lord of the Western Lands would say anything less. But, he still answered, "Yes."
Shippo took a seat next to Edward and whispered excitedly in his ear, "Do you smell it?"
Edward nodded before placing a calming hand on the kitsune's shoulder. "Do not mention it yet," he warned.
Taki looked at the kitsune curiously. What did he know that she didn't? Shrugging it off, she turned to the great lord who sat at the stand. She smiled to him. "Well, it is true what they say... You are hot," she commented, drawing giggles from Asakura, Rin, and Kagome. Elizabeth blushed as she stiffled her own giggle.
"Would you please restate your name for the court?" she asked him.
The taiyoukai growled, "Sesshomaru, Lord of the Western Lands."
She nodded. "And what is your relation to Tomo, Lord of the Mountain?"
"I have no relation to him," Sesshomaru told her.
The bird looked at him curiously. "No relation? Certainly you know of Lord Tomo?"
"Yes, I do."
"Then, how?" she asked.
"He is friend's with my daughter," he told her, honestly.
She nodded. "When was the first time you met Lord Tomo?"
"When he attended my daughter's birthday party," he answered.
"And what was your initial reaction?" she asked, smiling.
"To kill him."
This brought gasped from the Higashi's. Asakura's eyes widened as she squeezed Tomo's hand. Tomo sighed. This was going to be a long trial.
Taki cleared her throat. That wasn't the answer she had expected. "My lord, would you care to explain why?"
Sesshomaru gave a careless rise and drop of his shoulders. "I mistook him for an old enemy of mine. Someone I had thought long gone from this world."
"Naraku," Taki breathed. She hadn't meant to say that.
The dog demon nodded. "Yes. I mistook him for Naraku. Wouldn't you say the resemblance is... incredible?"
"And..." she stuttered. She straightened her throat again and took a couple deep breaths. That name always sent a chill up her spine. "After you realized who he was?"
Sesshomaru shrugged. "Why would I care? As long as he isn't Naraku, I don't care."
"You must trust him enough to befriend your daughter?"
The dog demon raised an eyebrow. "You did not ask me whether I trusted him. You asked me what my reaction to him was. Once I realized he was not Naraku, I did not care."
She nodded and began to pace the length of the stand. She looked up at him. "So, do you trust him? What are your thoughts of him?"
"He is the new Lord of the Mountain. There hasn't been a Lord of the Mountain since Naraku. My 'thoughts' of him will depend on how well he governs his lands," Sesshomaru answered. "As for trust, I hardly know him. I trust no one save my wife and my children."
Taki nodded and smiled. "No more questions, Your Honour."
She returned to her seat and watched as the kitsune lawyer stood up. He approached the dog demon with a thoughtful look on his face. "You say Lord Tomo reminded you of Naraku. Is there a relation between him and the notorious criminal?"
"I believe they are cousins," Sesshomaru answered. "At least, that is what my daughter had told me."
"Cousins?!" the kitsune shouted, seemingly shocked. Course, he already knew this. "So, is that how Tomo became a Lord? He inherited the land from his cousin?"
Sesshomaru growled, "What's your point, Mikali?"
The kitsune smiled. So, the great dog demon knew his name? He let his smile fade before he continued, "How can you be certain that Lord Tomo and Naraku are not alike? After all, Naraku was known for pretending to be kind-hearted. This could all be an act. A front the new Lord is putting on to 'get the girl,' so to speak."
"You are correct," Sesshomaru surprisingly agreed. "Tomo of the Mountain could be putting on a front. He could be lying to us. But, if he were, do you really believe he would go through all this trouble? Spend all this money?"
"A few hundred yen is nothing when you are a Lord. Wouldn't you agree, Lord Sesshomaru?"
The great demon said nothing and the kitsune smiled. "No further questions, Your Honour."
"You may step down, Lord Sesshomaru," the judge said, nodding to the taiyoukai.
Sesshomaru stepped down and rejoined his family. All the while, he watched the lawyer.
"Your next witness, Mrs. Tiki?"
"I call to the stand Princess Rin," she said.
Rin kissed Shippo on the cheek and then walked up to the stand.
"Princess? Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?" the judge asked her.
"I do," Rin answered, smiling.
"By the size of that rock on your finger, it sounds like you're practicing those words," Taki commented.
Rin's smile got bigger as she looked at the large diamond on her ring finger. "Yes. Shippo and I are getting married," she announced.
"Congratulations," Taki told her, drawing more smiles from the girl. "So, tell me. Are you and Lord Tomo friends?"
Rin nodded. "Best friends."
"How long have you known him?" the bird asked.
"Ummm... Six? Seven years? It's been a while," she answered.
"So, it's safe to say you trust him?" Taki pried.
Rin nodded. "Yes. I trust Tomo with my life."
"Objection, Your Honour!" Mikali called out.
The judge looked at him. "On what grounds?"
"She used his name without the title," the kitsune said simply. "Friend or not, this is a courtroom. Only those of his station or higher are allowed to use his informal name."
"Princess Rin, for the sake of the court, please refer to Lord Tomo as such?" the judge asked.
"Yes, Your Honour. I apologize," Rin said.
Taki continued, "What about Asakura, princess? Lord Tomo has been dating her for a while now. Any thoughts you would like to say about that? I know you've spent time with them. How are they when they are together?"
Rin smiled again. "Asakura is awesome. I don't know how she did it, but she has brought a light to To-- Lord Tomo that I had never seen before. You can tell, just by looking at them, that they are very much in love with one another."
"But, he's so much older then her," Taki mimicked in a deep- masculine voice.
Rin tilted her head slightly. "Since when did love have anything to do with age? I don't believe I've ever heard of an age barrier on love."
Taki smiled. "Good point, princess." Her face lost it's smile as she got serious. "Have you ever witnessed him harm her or take advantage of her in any way?"
Rin looked appalled. Yes, she knew that at one time, Tomo had wanted to eat Asakura. But, that was not now. She shook her head furiously. "He would never do something like that. Any time she has ever told him to stop, he has."
"She's had to tell him to stop?" Taki asked, more out of curiousity then anything.
Rin giggled and smiled a mischievous smile. "Well, they are in love. Sometimes, Lord Tomo can't help himself. He'll kiss her or place his hand on the small of her back. But, Asakura isn't really one who likes to show affection in a public place. Every once in a while, he'll start to get carried away. But, all she has to say is 'not now' and he stops. And he's always a gentleman. Opens doors, pulls out her seat, you know. Let's her order first. That sort of thing."
"Nothing further, Your Honour."
Mikali stood up and smiled a genuine smile at Rin. "I do congratulate you on your engagement, Princess Rin," he said to her.
Rin nodded. "Thank you, Mr. Mikali," she responded politely.
"Tell me, isn't Shippo older then you?" he asked.
She stopped and looked at him curiously. Slowly, she responded, "Yes...."
"Tell me, how do you know Lord Tomo? I know he's your friend, but, how did you meet? Where did you meet?" he asked.
Rin paled. The look in his eyes told her that he knew. She sighed, but answered his question, "He's my math teacher."
"A teacher?!" Mikali shouted, looking at the judge. "Can you believe that?! A teacher! And he befriends teenagers and dates minors! Is that even legal in today's society?
"And you!" he pointed an accusing finger at Rin. "You are in his class. Isn't that favouritism? To be friends with a student in your class? Then again, I'd be friends with you too, knowing you are the Lord of the Western Lands' daughter. Not mention how beautiful you are."
Rin snarled, "Lord Tomo does not show favouritism. If anything, he's hardest on me because we are friends. He gives me very little slack and if I so much as yawn in class, he jumps down my throat."
The fox chuckled, "Oh, I'm sure he's fantasized about putting a couple of things down your throat..."
"Objection, Your Honour!" Taki shouted, standing up. "He's badgering the witness!"
"And pissing me off," Sesshomaru growled. "Watch your tongue, fox, or I will cut it out."
Mikali shrugged. "I apologize for my rudeness. I really couldn't help myself. I mean, she left herself wide open for that one."
Shippo snarled and went for him. Kagome grabbed his arm to stop him. "No, Shippo! He's doing it on purpose. Ignore him," she begged.
The judge banged his mallet on the desk. "I will have order in this court! Mister Mikali! Anymore comments like that from you, and I will have you leave. Understood?"
"Yes, Your Honour. I apologize," the kitsune stated. "Truly apologize."
He looked at Rin and sighed, "Why do you think Lord Tomo became friends with you?"
"Because I'm smart."
"And beautiful."
She looked at him and her eyebrows furrowed. "I am one of the best students in school. He admires my level of intelligence."
"And you're beautiful," the kitsune stated again.
"Why do you keep saying that?" she asked him.
He offered her a solemn smile. "From what I gather, you are friends with another teacher at your school as well? Your English teacher?"
"Yes, I am."
"Did it ever occur to you that you have gained these friends because of your beauty? Even a friend your own age is a guy. I will not blame your English teacher, nor your other friend, for their interests in you. I believe they are your friends for just reasons," he told her.
She sighed, "But, you discredit Lord Tomo. Why?"
"I don't discredit him. I just find it strange that first he befriends one teenager and then starts dating another," he said. "I have no further questions, Your Honour."
Once she was dismissed, Rin stepped down from the stand and returned to her family. She offered Asakura and Tomo a smile as she passed them.

They had gone through most of the witnesses. Even Mr and Mrs Higashi had taken the stand, but they offered little, if any, evidence that Tomo was unable to care for their daughter.
Finally, Mikali stood up. "I call my final witness, Your Honour. Tomo, Lord of the Mountain, to the stands."
Tomo kissed Asakura on the forehead before standing up and making his way to the stand. He sat down and was sworn in.
Mikali looked at Tomo. "Lord Tomo. Is it true that you have just earned that title?"
Tomo nodded. "Yes."
"And is it also true that you will be looking for a Lady next?"
Tomo shook his head. "No, I will not."
Mikali tilted his head. "Are you hoping Asakura will take the position?"
"I know she will," Tomo answered confidently.
"Because she's pregnant with your child?" the fox asked him.
Tomo looked at Asakura and froze.

"Mrs.
~*~*~*~
