Chapter 2: Waking Moments

I do not own Inuyasha or the characters therein; all rights go to Rumiko Takahashi and VIZ productions.

Inuyasha sprang effortlessly from treetop to treetop, searching for Kagome, screaming her name at the top of his lungs. He was so afraid… afraid of losing her, afraid that he’d never get to tell her all of the things that he’d bottled up and never said. “Damn! Where did he take her?” Inuyasha said to himself, his eyes darting over the forest below him. He sat down on a branch high in the trees, praying for a glimpse of her blood or anything that would show him where Kagome was. “She was almost unconscious when I lost track of them! How in hell did he mask his scent to almost nothingness?” he asked aloud to no one in particular, his ears twitched, the lack of noise almost driving him crazy.

About six miles away, deep in a cave, Kagome came around, groaning painfully as she sat up, her ribs aching painfully. “Where am I?” she asked, realizing that it was so dark she couldn’t even see her hand in front of her face. “Inuyasha?” she asked the darkness, hoping he would hear her. No answer, so she repeated herself, yelling this time, thinking maybe if he wasn’t with her, then he was nearby. “INUYASHA!” The fear sank in as she realized that he wasn’t within earshot. Suddenly, everything came flooding back to her as she realized that the jewel shards weren’t around her neck. Panic erupted within her, then relief as she realized that the last time she’d seen Inuyasha, he’d gotten close enough for her to give them to him. She suddenly remembered that look on his face, his amber eyes, wide with fear as the youkai dragged her away. “Oh, God!” she breathed, ‘I’ve been kidnapped!’ she thought, stumbling to the ground, her legs suddenly feeling very weak. ‘I’ve got to get out of here!’ she thought, her mind not even registering the still bleeding wounds on her hands as she laid her head in them. Kagome felt so helpless, not realizing that said kidnapper had entered the section of the cave where she was being kept.
That laugh echoed off of the walls of the cave, sending fearful shivers down Kagome’s spine. “Where are the shards?” he asked almost as if Kagome could’ve told him.
“Like I would tell you!” she spat, wanting to claw his eyes out.
“I see, so you think that just because he’s an inu-hanyou, he’ll be able to find you here in this cave of mine? I have excellent masking abilities! I could make myself look like you, or him!” he laughed, demonstrating this point by doing so. She gasped, fearing very suddenly for her life, “For all you know, I’ve already masked myself as you and killed him! Now, where are the jewel pieces?” he asked again. Her face went white; this creep couldn’t kill Inuyasha, could he? She began to shake, the tears threatening her eyes, but she wiped them away with a shake of her head, not wanting to let this bastard see her cry.
“I don’t know where they are.” She said as she stood up, forcing the tears threatening her eyes not to fall.
“My, my… you are a defiant little thing aren’t you?” he asked tauntingly.
“I’m not obedient to you for sure!” she said, internally writhing with discomfort as he began to severely close in on her personal space, his anger becoming quite evident.
“You will tell me where the shards are!” he said as he gripped her arms, almost tearing the flesh as he closed his face into hers.
“NO I WON’T!” she said as she pushed him back, her aura glowing pink with her instinctual fight, actually hoping that Inuyasha would hear her.
He stumbled back and stared at her in shock. “Well, my little Miko, I guess that I can at least take one of your numbers out. The way I’ve heard it told, to steal away the innocence of a miko, then her powers are gone forever.” He said with an evil smirk that made her shudder at the thought of that bastard laying a finger on her.
“Don’t touch me!” she screamed, fearing that he may actually be right, and they wouldn’t be able to find the rest of the shards… Inuyasha would hate her. He quickly tackled her, and she almost immediately regretting wearing her school uniforms like she always did. Instead of raping her though, he shoved something into her mouth (a/n: get your minds out of the gutter people!) she bit down on it, thinking he was putting his hand in her mouth to keep her from screaming, instead, it was so she would inhale the silvery powder in his hand, she passed out, thinking ‘Inuyasha, I really need you! Help me!’
Unbeknownst to him, the powder was in fact having an unexpected side effect; she was able to cry out to Inuyasha in her drug-induced sleep.

Miles away, Inuyasha stopped mid jump when in his head, he heard Kagome crying out for help, she was scared. At the last minute, Inuyasha caught himself on a branch before he could crash to the ground. “Kagome?” he half-whispered.
‘Inuyasha!’ it echoed in his mind, seeming to bounce off of the insides of his skull. He stopped for a minute, and meditated, trying to hear what else she was crying out, ‘I really need you! Help me!’ the last echoed as he cried helplessly into his hands.
