Toward Tomorrow

Kagome’s eyes were closed as she stood in front of the old well. She took a deep breath in and gasped when she felt as if the magic returned to where it once was. She felt her hair blow slightly from the wind that shouldn’t even be there. When she opened her eyes and looked into the well‚ she saw the blue sky of the past. She had tears in her eyes‚ knowing that she will finally be able to see her friends once again. To see Inuyasha again…

Her mother peeked into the well house‚ concerned for her daughter. Kagome hasn’t been herself since she returned from the past three years ago. Today was her highschool graduation and she passed with good grades‚ but her daughter didn’t seem to really care.

“Kagome?” her mother questioned as she walked tentatively forward. “What's wrong?”

“Mama…”

Her mother stood beside her and peered into the well to see what has captured Kagome’s attention.

“The sky…”

Mrs. Higurashi put an arm around her daughter’s shoulders‚ knowing what was to come. She wouldn’t see her daughter ever again… but she would be with the man she had fallen in love with. Kagome’s eyes were shining with unshed tears.

“Mama‚ I…”

Mrs. Higurashi turned Kagome around to face her. Brown eyes locked with an older set of brown eyes‚ “Kagome…” She smiled warmly at the younger woman. “…It’s fine.”

Kagome smiled back as her tears threatened to fall‚ but she didn’t let them. This will be the beginning of the rest of her life.

“Doggie! Doggie!”

Inuyasha was sitting on a large rock‚ his arms stuffed into the sleeves of his crimson suikan. Sango and Miroku’s twin girls are on each of his shoulders‚ tugging on his ears. Shippo was on the boulder next to Inuyasha‚ watching the scene unfold with amusement shining in his emerald eyes. Miroku was behind them‚ hanging laundry to dry as his wife was crouched down in front of the water basin‚ with their infant boy strapped to her back.

“You’re like their toy,” Shippo commented from his place near the hanyou.

“Hey‚ do something about these twins,” Inuyasha remarked‚ slightly irritably.

Miroku turned from his work and replied‚ “Don’t tug on his ears.”

Sango also turned from her chores. “Sorry‚ Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha’s ear twitched away from the little girl’s hand as his face turned towards the sky‚ his nose twitching to scent the air. He stood up quickly‚ holding a twin in each hand by the back of their kimonos.

“Go slay the kitsune,” he commented right as he threw the girls at a startled Shippo.

Shippo was quickly tackled to the ground‚ yelling in shock as he fell to his stomach with two two year olds holding him down.

“Hey! What was that for!?” Shippo yelled at Inuyasha‚ but the hanyou was long gone.

“Shippo!” Gyokuto excitedly yelled.

“Slay!” Kin’u‚ the other twin responded happily.

Inuyasha ran as fast as he could through the small village‚ towards the Bone-Eaters Well.

This scent… His eyes widened as he moved even faster than before. There’s no mistaking it! He broke through the clearing‚ his heart pounding as the long dormant well came into view.

Three years. It’s been three long years since he has seen her. Smelled her. Touched her. Kissed her… He checked the well every three days for three years. Their kiss in the meido in the forefront of his mind. In his dreams. When he’s hunting. When he’s working. Kagome. Kagome. Kagome. Always Kagome. Now‚ unless his mind had finally shattered and was playing a cruel cruel joke on him… He could finally be with her. Tell her what he should have told her years ago. Hold her. Love her.

His breath caught as he stopped in front of the well. Sweat dripping from his brow‚ eyes wide and heart racing. He was staring into the depths‚ waiting for her to show herself. What felt like forever‚ but was only a few seconds‚ she appeared. He reached his right hand into the depths‚ and for the first time in three years‚ Kagome’s hand grasped his.

Inuyasha pulled her out quickly‚ unblinking‚ afraid to miss even a second of this beautiful woman in front of him. Kagome’s foot touched down on the lip of the well as her left hand rested on his shoulder‚ and her right hand held tightly onto his. They stared directly into each others eyes‚ both of them shining brightly.

Kagome’s smiling‚ holding back tears as she looked into the golden eyes of the man she has loved for three and a half straight years.

“Inuyasha‚ sorry. Were you waiting for me?”

Inuyasha had planned what he would say if he ever got to see her again. He was going to tell her he loves her‚ ask her to marry him and become his mate‚ then whisk her away to their new home. All of that however‚ went out the window when the time had finally come.

“Kagome…” He let her feet touch down on the soft grass beneath them and looked down into her shining brown eyes. He pulled her to his chest and she eagerly obliged. “You idiot. What have you been doing?” Not exactly what he had planned to say‚ but old habits die hard. He was at least happy he had the nerve to hug her‚ even though he had wanted to kiss her again.

Kagome rested her face against his chest and closed her eyes‚ sighing happily. It’s been way too long to be away from this man. She could smell his woodsy scent and savored in the warmth of his strong embrace.

Immediately‚ the couple’s reunion was cut short at the sound of their other friends approaching.

“Kagome!” Shippo yelled happily from Miroku’s shoulder.

“Kagome-chan…” Sango repeated in surprise amazement.

“It’s been so long Kagome-sama.” Miroku spoke up as well.

Kagome and Inuyasha separated to look at their approaching friends. Kagome smiled widely at the sight of her friends with children of their own. Two adorable girls in Miroku’s arms and a baby boy on Sango’s back.

“Miroku-sama! Sango-chan! Shippo!”

“Hey!” Shippo waved and smiled happily. His adopted mother was finally home.

Kagome felt whole for the first time in years‚ smiling wider than she could ever remember before. I’m back.

The group of misfits arrived at Kaede’s about an hour ago. Inuyasha had been sitting as close to Kagome as physically possible to her right‚ Sango and Miroku across from them on the other side of the fire. Kagome had little Hisui‚ Sango and Miroku’s son‚ in her arms as she was laughing and smiling with her friends as if nothing had changed. Shippo was sitting on Inuyasha’s left shoulder‚ Sango and Miroku each had a twin in their lap. Kaede was sitting in the corner of the hut‚ her one good eye shining with unshed tears. Rin was sitting happily next to the old woman.

After their initial reunion‚ they all headed to Kaede’s. Kagome had explained what she had been up to those few years away. She told them she had finished her mandatory studies and there wasn’t really anything holding her to the future any longer. She said she will always love her family‚ but the family she really needed was right here‚ in the Sengoku Jidai. She had locked eyes with Inuyasha when she said that‚ hoping to convey the true meaning of her words.

I came back for you…

Kagome looked down at the little baby in her arms and smiled brightly. She rocked him and cooed at his adorable little face. Sango smiled as she saw the woman who was like a little sister to her‚ handle the child so well.

“You are going to be a great mother one day‚ Kagome.”

Kagome’s eyes snapped up to look at Sango. Her face turned red and she didn’t even dare turn to see the look on Inuyasha’s face. Kagome swallowed the sudden lump in her throat and spoke awkwardly.

“Uh… y-yeah… someday…”

Shippo jumped from Inuyasha’s shoulder to Kagome’s and asked, “When are you and Inuyasha having a baby of your own?”

Kagome didn’t think it was possible to get any more embarrassed‚ but she was wrong. She managed a small glance at the hanyou who seemed just as embarrassed as her. He growled at Shippo and clenched his fists inside of the sleeves of his suikan.

“Runt…‚” he growled out his warning.

Shippo squealed and hid behind Kagome‚s head. “What? I'm just a kid!”

Inuyasha growled‚ but said nothing further. He knew Shippo wasn’t ‘just a kid.’ He’s a demon‚ and demons know about those things. The whole ‘kid’ card was always used so the humans don’t suspect a thing.

Damn brat.

Miroku grinned‚ but decided to keep quiet and not tease their friends. That could wait until after they hash things out. He didn’t want to make them distant themselves from each other‚ but once they are together‚ he will definitely tease the hanyou about it.

Kaede chuckled to herself and thought a change in subject was in order. “Kagome child. Have ye decided if ye would like to be trained as the village Miko?”

Inuyasha looked to Kagome for her answer. When Kagome smiled widely‚ it was as he feared.

“Oh! That would be great‚ Kaede-baa-chan. I was wondering what I would do as a career here‚ and I think I would really love to help people.”

Inuyasha’s ears flattened to his head at that. It’s fifty-three years ago all over again. He couldn’t be with Kikyo as a hanyou and she couldn’t be with him unless she was an ordinary woman. A shrine maiden couldn’t marry. They must remain pure. He thought she had come back to be with him but…

He shook his head of those thoughts and decided not to dwell on it at the moment. Maybe he could court her and remind her of what they had. He wasn’t the most thoughtful‚ but he could try for her. He has had three years to think on how badly he had treated her. He won't let her go so easily.

Kaede only nodded and went back to entertaining the now eleven year old Rin.

The rest of the evening went by as well as she could have hoped. She got reacquainted with her friends and their kids. She shared some looks with Inuyasha that she thought might mean something more than friendship. She witnessed the twins love for the hanyou’s ears and giggled at the sight. She thought about what Shippo had asked‚ and blushed when she couldn’t help but think of Inuyasha as a father. The father of her children.

As Miroku and Sango were getting their tired kids ready to leave‚ Rin spoke to Kagome. “Will you be staying with Rin and Kaede-sama‚ Kagome-sama?”

Kagome glanced to Inuyasha who seemed to be trying not to look at her. She looked back at Rin and smiled. “I don't know Rin. Right now‚ I kind of want to speak with Inuyasha.” She turned back to the hanyou. “Can we... go on a walk?”

Rin pouted‚ but agreed. She would have plenty of time to hang out with Kagome in the future.

Inuyasha nodded his head‚ but he seemed lost in thought. He walked out of the hut without another word. Kagome frowned in confusion‚ but didn’t think much of it. She handed the baby over to Miroku‚ who helped strap him back to Sango’s back. Then she looked down to Shippo.

“I’ll see you soon‚ okay?”

“Can’t I come with you‚ Kagome? I really missed you.”

Kagome crouched down and hugged the kitsune. “I’m sorry‚ Shippo. I missed you too‚ but I really need some time alone with Inuyasha.”

Shippo looked back at Kagome and smiled‚ a small grin poking through. “Oh! Okay.” He hopped up to Miroku’s shoulder and whispered into his ear‚ “That baka better not mess this up!”

Miroku chuckled and faced the future born Miko. “Kagome-sama‚ Inuyasha has missed you more than you could know.”

Kagome blushed but smiled. As she was about to walk away‚ Sango stepped forward and hugged her tight. “I’m so glad you are back‚ Kagome-chan. Now go tell that stubborn baka how you feel.”

Kagome pulled away with tears in her eyes. “Thank you.” She turned to the rest of her family. “All of you.” Then took a deep breath in and walked outside.

She saw Inuyasha leaning up against a hut across from them and smiled at him. He nodded his head and walked up to her. She tentatively grabbed his hand and started to walk towards the Goshinboku. They walked in silence‚ both thinking about the past‚ present and what was to become of the future.

Kagome was more nervous than she has felt since the time in her room when Inuyasha was about to kiss her. She couldn’t help but feel that maybe her friends were wrong. Maybe Inuyasha only saw her as a friend and didn’t want to be anything more.

But he kissed you‚ you baka!

She sighed. That kiss has been on replay over and over in her mind for three long years. She couldn’t help but think that he kissed her because he loved her… but what if it was just in the heat of the moment? What if it didn't mean as much to him as it did to her? He never actually said he loved her…

Inuyasha’s mind was reeling from the day's events. He woke up this morning expecting the same old same old. He would make sure no demons were around the area and then chill out in Goshinboku before forcing himself to spend time with his only friends.

Then Kagome came back into his life. Kami‚ how he missed her. But‚ did she want to be a Miko? Or did she want to be with him? It’s one thing to have her friendship‚ but it’s a whole different thing to be romatically and physically involved.

What am I thinking, baka!? Of course she would rather be a shrine maiden… What can a half-breed like me give her?

They made it to the old tree without even a word to the other. Kagome squeezed his hand and looked up into the branches of the Goshinboku. She turned back to see Inuyasha lost in thought and she frowned.

“Inuyasha?”

His eyes snapped to hers and she sighed. He seemed on edge. Guarded like he was when they had first met.

I was a fool to think we could pick up where we left off…, she thought to herself.

“What is it‚ Kagome? You should get to sleep. It’s been a long day.”

Kagome sighed and backed up against the tree‚ holding his hand between them. She looked down at their entwined fingers and then back into his golden eyes.

She missed those eyes so much…

“Inuyasha I…” She averted her gaze and didn’t notice the forlorn look he sent her.

Inuyasha growled and pulled his hand away. His old insecurities were causing him to act how he would have all those years ago.

“Just spit it out already‚ wench!”

Kagome flinched at his harsh tone‚ before she looked back up into his eyes with tears shining in hers. There had to be something she was missing. He seemed perfectly happy with her for a while‚ and then started to distance himself from her. She reached her hand towards his face‚ but he backed up. She dropped her hand to her side and looked down at her feet.

“I… I missed you‚ Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha’s ears flattened to the top of his head as he looked up at the sky above. The full moon was shining brightly‚ the light breeze blowing their hair around their faces. He clenched his fists tightly and closed his eyes.

“Don't…”

Kagome’s tears were threatening to break free‚ but she refused to let them. This was her worst fear. Coming back to him only to be told she was wrong. He didn’t love her and never had. He didn’t want to be with her. The kiss in the meido meant nothing. The last three years apart from him weren’t as hard for him as it was for her. She blinked her tears away and stepped towards him.

No.

She wasn’t going to let him do this. Not now. She wasn’t a little girl anymore. No doubt that at fifteen‚ she would have sat him and run away. Not now. Not like this. She’s an adult now‚ and she’s going to get him to talk to her if it’s the last thing she ever did.

Kagome forcibly grabbed his hand and held it tight. He looked into her eyes and his resolve to back away almost crumbled at the look of hurt she was giving him. He wanted nothing more than to kiss her and marry her and mate her and have a family with her.

But he wouldn’t be able to have that if she chose a different path.

“Inuyasha… Did you miss me too?” She interlaced their fingers together and stepped closer. She used her other hand to cup his cheek lightly and smiled sadly into his eyes.

“Kagome…” He started to lean closer to her‚ lost in the moment…

Kagome’s heart started to pound‚ butterflies started to erupt in the pit of her stomach. Please‚ Inuyasha… Don’t pull away from me anymore. I love you…

At the last second‚ Inuyasha turned his face and backed up a step. He shook his head to free his mind of his thoughts and looked back to her defeated gaze.

“Don’t… I… I can’t Kagome…”

Kagome pulled her hand away from his as if she was burned‚ unable to hold her tears in any longer. She looked down at the ground‚ tears flowing freely down her face.

“Why?” was all she was able to say in response to his rejection.

Inuyasha hated the scent of her tears‚ of her sorrow and confusion. Why didn’t she get it? She couldn’t be with him if she wanted to be a Miko!

“Just drop it‚” he growled out defensively.

Kagome’s face burned red with her anger now. How could he be so insensitive? Didn’t he know how much she loved him? If he didn’t feel the same way‚ couldn’t he just tell her‚ instead of tip-toeing around it?

She glared at him and clenched her fists at her sides. “No. You don’t get to do that anymore! Three years Inuyasha. I have been gone for three years. And do you know why I came back when the well gave me the choice?”

He stayed silent‚ his ears plastered to his skull‚ averting his gaze from hers.

“For you‚ baka!”

Inuyasha’s eyes snapped to hers‚ wide and full of wonder. “Wha…?”

Kagome stepped up to him once again‚ took a deep breath in and looked into his bright gold eyes.

“I came back to be with you. I love you‚ Inuyasha. So stop pushing me away. If you don’t feel the same‚ than tell me‚ damn it! It’s not fair to–”

She was stopped mid sentence by his lips on hers. Inuyasha had grabbed her by the back of the neck and kissed her. Kagome immediately put her hands to the front of his suikan and grabbed it in fistfuls to keep him right where he was.

Kagome moaned softly into the kiss as he moved his lips more confidently against hers. She felt him about to back away‚ so she wrapped her arms around the back of his neck and pulled him closer. Inuyasha growled lightly and backed her up against the Goshinboku. He pressed his body firmly against hers‚ having her feel the full extent of his need for her.

Kagome moaned and Inuyasha could smell her arousal spike for him. For the love of all that is holy‚ he couldn’t remember why he was pushing her away to begin with. But then he needed to pull back for some air. He rested his forehead against hers and everything came crashing back to him.

“Kagome…”

She knew the sound of regret as soon as he said her name. Her heart plummeted and she wrapped her arms around him even tighter.

“Please‚ Inuyasha. Don’t mess with my feelings. Why are you pushing me away?”

Inuyasha laid his face into the crook of her neck and nuzzled her close‚ taking a deep breath in of her intoxicating scent.

“It’s just… What about what you said to Kaede?”

Kagome pulled his head back lightly by the hair and searched his eyes. “What do you mean?”

He sighed‚ but figured there wasn’t anything to hide now. They have already said and done too much to take back.

“You want to be a Miko. A Miko and a hanyou can't–”

Kagome’s face erupted in anger as she cut him off with a more intense kiss than he had given her. She moved her hands up to his ears and rubbed them at the base‚ elicitating a soft growl from her hanyou. She moaned into the kiss as she snaked her tongue out to taste his bottom lip. Inuyasha gasped‚ giving her the chance to taste him even further. She licked along both of his fangs‚ causing him to groan and her to moan. She tasted his tongue and was pleased when he swirled it along with hers. She could feel his obvious erection through their layers of clothing and wanted so much more‚ but knew they had to finish this conversation first. Her stubborn hanyou didn’t seem to understand.

She pulled away from him and cupped both of his cheeks to keep his attention on her. “Listen here you stubborn baka. I am not going to be deprived the joy of being with the man I love because of some stupid rule that Miko’s must remain pure. I believe that it is purity of the heart‚ not purity of the body. And so what if my powers diminish or I lose them completely? I would always choose you. And if I keep my powers‚ which I am almost certain I will‚ then I will still heal people. There isn’t a choice to be made‚ and the people who can’t handle me being a ‘youkai whore’ can go fuck themselves because I love you! Do you understand‚ you silly hanyou?”

Inuyasha had never expected his sweet innocent Kagome to speak that way at all. But wholly gods did it do something for him. All he could do in response was nod dumbly as he kissed her once more. Kagome wrapped her arms back around his neck and immediately opened her mouth for his tongue. She sighed into the kiss as his claws raked down her back and towards her hips. He held onto her hips in a firm grip as he ground himself against her body‚ causing her to whimper and her scent to spike deliciously.

Inuyasha pulled back from her lips‚ panting and horny as hell. “Marry me.”

Kagome gasped and he flinched. That was so not how he meant to propose! Before he could say or do something stupid like take it back, Kagome spoke.

“Yes.”

Kagome’s stomach erupted in butterflies as she saw her hanyou smile wider than she could ever remember seeing. Inuyasha grabbed her hand and pulled her away from the tree. He crouched in front of her and turned in a familiar pose.

“Come on‚ I wanna show ya somethin’.”

Kagome smiled and climbed on without a second thought. She gasped softly when she felt his clawed hands grasp her bare legs. It’s been so long since she got to ride on his back. She held onto his shoulders with her hands and snuggled her face into the back of his neck.

She watched the world around her go by as her hanyou breezed through the trees. His hands idly stroking under her legs‚ making her shiver‚ but not from being cold. She hugged him tighter as they started to slow down. She was a little disappointed that they only ran for about five minutes‚ but she was curious to see what it was he had to show her.

Inuyasha stopped before a wall of trees. He let go of her legs and allowed her to slide off of his back. Once she was again on her own feet, she stood next to him and looked up at him questioningly.

“Inuyasha?”

He smiled warmly at her‚ showing a fang. “Go through.” He pointed at a pair of trees that seemed to be like an archway. She reached her right hand to the vines between the trees that worked like a type of doorway and moved them aside. She walked through‚ Inuyasha right behind her. He heard her gasp, and he smiled smugly to himself.

Kagome put her hands to her mouth and stared ahead of her in wonder. “Inuyasha…”

He stood behind her and put his hands gently on her shoulders‚ whispering into her ear‚ “I had a lot of time these last three years. Do ya like it?”

She nodded her head and looked around in amazement at the beautiful area in front of her.

If she were to guess‚ the area in front of her surrounded by trees‚ was probably about one and a half acres of land. In the center of this spot of land was a fairly large hut. More like a house from her era‚ but built with the tools and wood from this era. There was enough room around the perimeter of the house to plant a garden and anything else Kagome might want. Flowers‚ herbs‚ vegitables‚ etc. 

She looked to her left and saw a hot spring surrounded by beautiful flowers. Behind the hot spring was a small river‚ leading through the trees in the backyard‚ so they have fresh water at all times.

There were a couple of different storage sheds throughout the area where they could keep wood and other supplies‚ along with non-perishable food.

Kagome was speechless. She couldn’t move‚ so when she heard Inuyasha chuckle‚ she shook her head out of her daze and looked to where he was now standing in front of her. He held his hand out and waited.

“Well? Come on‚ wench.”

Kagome smiled and grabbed his hand‚ following eagerly as he led her to the front door of their home.

Home… Tears came to her eyes, but they were full of happiness for their new beginning.

When they walked inside‚ Kagome had to stifle yet another gasp. It seemed as though Inuyasha tried to make the home as modern as possible. When you first walk through the door‚ you could see the main area – living room – with a man-made couch and a couple chairs‚ sitting in front of a fairly large indoor fireplace. The couch and chairs were made of wood‚ but they had furs covering them for comfort and what looked to be expensive cusions on each seat. The fireplace was surrounded by rocks to keep from spreading to any of the wood around it.

Kagome walked through the living room and towards what she would call the ‘dining room’. There was a wooden table with six wooden chairs around it; two on each of the long sides and one on each of the short sides. Each chair had a thin layer of fur to give it that extra bit of comfort as well.

She turned to her right and walked through an open archway into the ‘kitchen’. Inuyasha had built everything she would need to be as comfortable as possible living in the past. There were countertops with cabinets below them to keep their pots and pans and other dishes. Above the countertops were some extra storage areas for any dry food they may have. There was enough room to work side by side when cooking or cleaning.

She turned back to exit the room and smiled at the blushing hanyou as she went to the other side of the house. She saw two rooms side by side on her right and opened each one to look inside. They were a little bigger than her childhood bedroom and each were set up the same. One of them was obviously lived in. They both had a twin size bed in the center of the room with a storage area on the far ends of the area. She looked at Inuyasha questioningly when she noticed that one of the rooms was lived in‚ but it didn'’t look like it was the hanyou who lived there.

He blushed and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. “The runt lives here with me.” She smiled widely at him and nodded her head without another word before she went across from those rooms to check the other two out.

There was a small room which she looked at first. Her smile widened when she saw that Inuyasha had created a bathroom for her. Obviously there wasn't modern plumming‚ but he did the best he could with what he had. She noticed there was another door inside the bathroom‚ so she opened it and walked inside. She looked back at Inuyasha whose blush deepened even further.

The master bedroom‚ obviously where Inuyasha sleeps‚ (or rests‚ if he sleeps at all)‚ was connected to both the bathroom and the hall of the main house. She saw a large bed‚ probably a king size‚ in the center of the room‚ the head of it against the far wall. There were side tables on each end of the bed. He even built a type of bedframe and headboard like one would see in the modern era. There was a large trunk at the foot of the bed‚ and Kagome gasped when she saw what was leaning against it.

“My bow!”

She walked up to it and tentatively reached toward it. She smiled when it easily accepted her and she held it close to her chest. She looked into Inuyasha’s eyes and her smile widened.

Inuyasha opened the trunk and pulled something else out of it to hand to her. Her eyes shone with unshed tears as she grasped her long lost yellow bag from him.

“You kept this all this time?”

He shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. “Of course. I knew you would come back.”

Kagome dropped her bag and rested the bow back against the trunk to wrap her arms around his neck and hug him tight.

“Thank you. Thank you for everything‚ Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha held her close around her waist and nuzzled his face into the crook of her neck. He heard her gasp once again‚ making him smile‚ knowing just what had caught her attention. She pulled back from him and looked out of the far wall connecting the house to the outside.
