Chapter 3
Bonds and the Wind Shrine
Kagome sat up later that night, writing on a little notepad Miroku had given her earlier. She was trying to write a poem to express how she felt about her new life. She looked over her poem.
I swim and swim
Through a deep dark river
I swim and swim
Through a sparkling bright stream
I swim and swim
Through good things and bad
I swim and swim
Through hope and despair
I swim and swim
Through a river of dreams
She looked it over and felt as though she had expressed herself as well as she could. She felt as though she was, indeed, living in a dream. And making the poem a repetition felt just about right.
"Hey."
Kagome jumped and almost screamed. She turned around and saw that Inuyasha was watching her. She relaxed slightly.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Just writing," she said. He stood up and walked over to sit down next to her. He looked at the notebook she was holding. He read over the poem.
"That's pretty good," he remarked. "What is it about?"
"Just how it feels to me in this new world," she admitted. "I feel like I'm living in a dream right now. And I'm a poet, so I write poems about my feelings all the time."
He nodded. "I can't imagine how it must feel," he said.
They sat together in silence for a few minutes. Kagome was a little nervous at how he would react to the question she wanted to ask, but before she could ask it, he began to speak to her.
"Kagome, you said that whenever I needed to talk to someone I could talk to you, right?" he asked.
"Yes," she said slowly, unsure of what he was going to say.
He hung his head, not wanting to look at her while he admitted his story. "I…I wanted to tell you about Kikyou. I know you've been wondering who she is ever since I mentioned her to you."
"Well, yeah, I have to admit that," she said.
He looked up at the sky for a moment, wondering where to begin. Then he sighed.
"Kikyou was a woman I met about 35 years ago," he began.
"35?" she asked. "But you only look about 18 years old. How-?"
"I'm a demon, we age differently than humans. Anyway, I met this woman 35 years ago, and we started to go out with each other. I was deeply in love with this woman, and I thought she was in love with me. Then she betrayed me."
Kagome gazed at him, seeing his pain clearly on his face. She didn't say a word, feeling that this was a time to say silent and let him bear the pain the way he wanted to. He stayed silent for a moment, then continued.
"I was going to give her a surprise visit in her village, and I didn't tell her I was coming. I arrived at the village and went to her house. When I walked in, I found her with in bed with my older brother."
Kagome froze. She was completely shocked. She didn't say a word. She couldn't.
"My brother and I fought over her. I was totally dumbfounded and I couldn't concentrate. I lost to him, and Kikyou went with him. She told me that she had been with him for about five months of our relationship, and that our relationship was over. ”
He stayed silent. He was afraid to say anything. He was also afraid of what he might say.
Kagome could tell he was lost in his thoughts and didn't bother him. She simply sat beside him, pondering. Finally she spoke.
"So that's why you don't like me, then," she said.
Inuyasha stared straight ahead, registering what she said slowly. Then, before Kagome knew what was happening, he had twisted and grabbed her by the shoulders, pinning her arms to her sides. She gazed up at him, surprised, but keeping her expression unreadable.
"Don't you even think that," he said. "That is why I didn't like you, that's true, but I do like you now. You're a good person. Don't ever think otherwise."
Abruptly he let go of her, leaving her sitting in exactly the same spot, apparently undisturbed by the whole thing. She looked at him slowly, amazed at what he had just said to her.
"I-Inuyasha, I…"
"Don't say a word, Kagome," he said. "I don't get attached to people very easily, and you're the first person in a long time that I've liked almost immediately. I don't want to scare you off, because of that." His ears drooped in an unvoiced emotion. Kagome didn't want to ask if he didn't want to tell her. She just gazed at him, waiting for him to say something else.
He looked at the sky, not wanting to look at her and see her expression. He cursed the fact that the moon was shining clearly, so he could see every detail of her face. He didn't want to have to look at her and see Kikyou's reflection looking back at him.
They sat in silence for a moment, then Kagome stood up. He glanced up at her.
"Thank you for trusting me with this, Inuyasha," she said. She avoided his gaze as she turned away from him and said quietly, "And I'm sorry."
He watched her as she began to walk away. Then he jumped up and landed in front of her easily. He grabbed her shoulders and forced her to face him.
"What the hell are you sorry for?" he asked. "You haven't done anything…except made me sit, but that doesn't really have to do with this conversation, so forget I said that. Anyway, what the hell are you apologizing for?"
She looked up at him for a moment, but quickly glanced away. She tried to shrug him off, but he wouldn't let go.
"I'm sorry I remind you of Kikyou," she said softly, still looking at the ground.
He loosened his grip on her, taken aback at her statement. She shrugged him off and walked away, standing at the top of the hill they were camping on. She glanced back at him for an instant, then looked forward again, spreading her wings and taking off. He watched her as she flew off into the distance, stunned into complete and utter silence.
'Did…did I make a mistake? Did I say something wrong?' he thought. 'I could see…pain, and…and fear in her eyes. Is she afraid of me?'
'Or maybe…maybe she just knows that I don't completely trust her yet, because of her resemblance to Kikyou.' He bitterly recalled the day when he had found Sesshomaru and Kikyou in bed together. Since then, he had a very hard time liking or trusting anyone. And Kagome knew it.
He whispered the words he knew he should've said to her.
"No, Kagome, I'm sorry," he said quietly.

Miroku noticed the tension between Kagome and Inuyasha the next day. They both seemed kind of distracted and didn't speak to each other. Shippou and Sango noticed too.
"What happened between those two?" Shippou asked Sango. She shrugged. None of them had been awake when the two of them had their conversation.
Miroku leaned over to Sango and asked her quietly, "Why don't you ask Kagome what's going on between them? You two get along better than any of us."
Sango nodded and stepped beside Kagome. "Hey, uh, Kagome?"
Kagome looked up, having been oblivious to the conversations that had been going on around her, lost in her thoughts. "Yeah?"
"Um, did something happen between you and Inuyasha?" Sango asked hesitantly.
Kagome glanced at Inuyasha and saw him watching her. She kept her expression neutral.
"Define what you mean by 'something,' Sango," she said rather icily.
"Um, well, did you two have an argument?"
"In a sense," said Kagome, walking a little faster to keep away from Inuyasha. He looked a little hurt. Sango glanced at him questioningly.
"It wasn't exactly an argument, I guess," he said quietly. "We just…we didn't agree on something, and I said something stupid to her, and she's mad at me."
Kagome turned her head slightly. "I'm not mad Inuyasha, I just don't feel like talking today," she said coldly. She had a creepy smile on her face, obviously a forced one, trying to appear cheerful.
The others got chills at her expression, and they paused for a moment until she turned away. They glanced at Inuyasha, who looked petrified.
"Yeah, I'd say she's mad at you, Inuyasha," said Shippou.
"You think?" he asked sarcastically.

"So, Sango, this is what's left of your village?"
"Yeah, Kagome," said Sango. "When I went with a large party of slayers from my village, the village itself was attacked. There weren't enough people to protect it, and my entire village was slain." There was a trace of bitterness in her voice, but otherwise she held her emotions in pretty well.
She turned in another direction. "The Wind Shrine is that way," she said, pointing.
The others nodded, and Kagome stretched her wings and began to fly in the direction Sango had indicated. She flew high above the ground, searching for the shrine.
"Oh, there it is!" she exclaimed to herself happily, spotting it. She flew back to the others and affirmed where it was.
She flew up again, indicating to the others to follow her. Inuyasha and Miroku ran ninja-style side-by-side, and Sango and Shippou rode on Kirara after she had transformed. They followed Kagome and reached the shrine.
"Sango, what is this god like?" Shippou asked.
"Actually Shippou, I'm not so certain," she said. "We've only made offerings to him before, I've never actually seen him. I can't really tell any of you what to expect."
"You guys should all stay out here," said Kagome suddenly. "This is my task, and it might be dangerous. I don't even know why…"
"Why what, Kagome?" asked Miroku.
She shook her head. "Never mind," she said, smiling at him.
"As for dangerous, Kagome, that's why we wanted to come with you in the first place," said Inuyasha suddenly.
Everyone turned to look at him. It was the first time all day he had spoken to her.
"We didn't want you to get hurt, and so we came along to help you. If we can't protect you, then what was the point of coming? There's no way I'm letting you go in there alone. So either at least one of us comes, or no one goes in there at all."
"Inu…yasha…" she said, surprised.
"Don't go all sappy on me, Kagome, it makes me look like I'm some kind of hero," he said with a trace of humor.
Inwardly, everyone sighed with relief as the tension in the air dissipated. Kagome smiled sincerely at Inuyasha for the first time all day. Inuyasha, who had been very sullen all day, relaxed his shoulders and his ears. He smiled at her, too. Then he snapped back to a business-like manner.
"Right, I think that all of us going in might be a little much, but we should have one or two go in with her. I don't want to take chances."
They all nodded, except for Kagome, who was staring into the darkness of the shrine, looking apprehensive. That worried Inuyasha, but he didn't say anything. He looked at the rest of the gang.
"Sango, you come with me," said Inuyasha, "we're going in with Kagome."
"Right," said Sango, nodding.
"Miroku, you, Kirara, and Shippou stay here to guard the shrine's entrance. We may need it."
They nodded, a serious look on their faces. They turned around and faced the outside. Kagome walked forward and Inuyasha and Sango followed her closely, Inuyasha drawing his sword. Inuyasha gazed at Kagome, wondering what she knew about this place. She certainly seemed to know what she was doing. She wasn't making a sound, and, following her lead, neither did Sango or Inuyasha. After a few moments in the darkness, though, Sango leaned toward Inuyasha.
“Is it just me, or does it seem like there's something wrong with Kagome?” she asked in a whisper.
He glanced sideways at her. "What do you mean?" he asked just as quietly.
"She's acting a little, well, strange. She hasn't said a word since we entered the shrine and seems kind of mesmerized or something. She's worrying me."
Inuyasha nodded in agreement, perking his ears a little to hear Kagome. Her breathing was a little labored, and she was barely making any other noise. Even her wings made no rustle at all, as though she was holding herself very still so as not to make any noise. He felt a little worried too, but he didn't show any signs of it. Then he saw a light up ahead, and called out to his friend.
"Kagome, wait up! You can't go in there alone! Wait for us!"
She gave no sign that she heard him, and walked a little faster. A growing suspicion nagged at him, and he leapt at Kagome, pulling her back from the doorway just as she reached it.
He was just in time. Arrows flew through the air at them, and Kagome snapped out of her paralyzed state just in time to harden the air so the arrows didn't hit any of them. Inuyasha stared at the arrow that had stopped just inches from his face, then glanced at Kagome. She looked a little frightened, but relieved at the same time. Sango ran in and stared at the scene in front of her. Inuyasha held the young girl in his arms protectively, and she had one hand thrust in front of her, holding dozens of arrows suspended in the air while she breathed heavily, looking like her normal self again.
"Uh…did I miss something?" she asked uncertainly.
"I was about to walk right into these arrows," said Kagome softly. "Inuyasha saved me, and I had to stop the arrows before they hurt him, so I stilled the air."
"KAGOME HIGURASHI!!!!"
Everyone jumped and got into battle positions, Inuyasha and Sango on either side of Kagome, in order to protect her.
"Y-yes?" she answered in a shaky voice.
"PLEASE HELP MEEEE!!!!!!!"
Kagome's eyes widened as she realized who was talking.
"G-Grandpa?"
Inuyasha's ears perked in astonishment as he and Sango turned to look at her in amazement.
