Chapter 6
The Past Come Back to Haunt
The next day, Kagome was pelted by everyone, asking her if she was all right. She had a hard time convincing them, but she shouldn't have suspected less, after the scene last night.
"For the last time, everyone, I'm fine!" she said, looking embarrassed. "Nothing is wrong with me, I'm okay!"
"Are you sure?" asked Sango.
""Yes, I'm sure!" she replied exasperatedly. "I'm fine, that's settled, we have a big problem on our hands, so let's figure it out!"
"What problem?" asked Shippou.
"Getting Gramps home, that's what," she answered. "He belongs back with my family, on Makushmia. He can't travel with us, so we have to find out how to send him home."
"Very true," said Miroku.
"But Kagome, I should come along," said Mr. Higurashi. "That way I can make sure you're safe, and that you don't get messed up with the boys."
Kagome cringed at that thought, seeing as he didn't do a very good job with that last night. She and Inuyasha had been…
'Don't think about that,' she told herself firmly. 'As far as I'm concerned, it didn't happen, okay?'
"Kagome?"
She looked up and smiled. "Sorry, lost myself in thoughts there for a minute," she said cheerfully. "Anyway, Grandpa, it's too dangerous, and well…"
"You'll only slow us down, old man," said Inuyasha sharply.
Kagome glanced at Inuyasha, her expression furious. "Don't you DARE talk to my grandfather like that," she said angrily. "SIT!!!!!"
Inuyasha had just enough time to look frightened before he was pummeled face-first into the ground. Sango, Miroku, Shippou, Mr. Higurashi, and even Kirara looked a little scared at Kagome's snappy anger. Miroku leaned toward Sango.
"Do you think those two had another argument last night?" he asked.
"Seems like it," she answered as Inuyasha leapt up from the ground. "We should all stand clear," she added, and the others stepped away from the two furious friends, looking apprehensive.
"Would you stop doing that to me?" asked Inuyasha.
"Well, stop acting like such a jerk to everyone!" she answered.
"You were going to say something along the same lines anyway!" he yelled.
"You still had no right to talk to him like that!" she shouted.
"This is going to take a while," said Miroku, sitting down. The others followed suit.
"I've been talking to people like that for centuries," snarled Inuyasha.
"I don't give a shit, this is my grandfather! And the reason you even have that rosary is because you talk to people like that!"
"Why are you so upset over the whole thing? Most people don't care!"
"URUSAI YO!" she screamed, making everyone jump, even Inuyasha. "Osawari!"
And though it was in a different language, to everyone's surprise, the "sit" command still worked.
"Well, I'm not most people, bakayoru!" she yelled. "I do care, and unfortunately for you, whether you sit-" and Inuyasha fell here- "or not is under my control, so get used to it, buddy! So just shut up and let's get going and figure out what we're going to do, and if you disrespect my grandfather one more time, I swear I'll make you sit-" at that, Inuyasha fell into the ground again, "-so much that you'll have to stand while using a cane for a month!"
No one dared to make a sound. Kagome looked so pissed off that she seemed likely to kill the next person who dared to say anything. Inuyasha had more fear on his face now then all the other times he was ever scared, in the last three hundred years, put together. A mortal girl 300 years younger then him had him cowering on the ground, holding onto a rock in fear. That was a first.
Breathing heavily, Kagome turned away from everyone, her shoulders hunched. Shippou jumped onto Inuyasha's shoulder.
"Inuyasha, what in the world did you say to her last night that made her so mad?" he asked.
"Something really stupid, but that's none of your business," snapped Inuyasha. "I had no idea she'd get this upset, though."
"Well, news flash, Inuyasha," said Miroku, "you really should apologize, you know."
"No fucking way," snarled Inuyasha, "I will not be made the enemy here! I won't apologize!"
"And why not?" asked Sango.
"Because," said Inuyasha, deliberately raising his voice so that Kagome would hear him, "I don't regret what I did last night!"
Kagome stilled for a moment, but didn't turn around. Then she tossed her head with a "Humph," and continued walking. The others exchanged glances and followed, Inuyasha bringing up the rear. He was surprised with himself, and had to mull over what he had just said.
'Do I really not regret it?' he asked himself. 'I don't think I do. I mean, it didn't feel wrong, and she really needed it, and…'
'Keh, you really did like it, didn't you? Just admit it to yourself,' said another voice in his head. 'You liked kissing her and you want to do it again.'
He sighed out loud, and the others looked around at him. Sango leaned toward Miroku.
"Miroku?" she said in an overly loud whisper.
"Yes?" he answered just as exaggeratedly.
"I think this is going to be a loooong journey."
Everyone, minus Inuyasha and Kagome, who weren't paying attention to anything, nodded in agreement.
* * *
"So that's the situation now, Kaede," finished Kagome.
Everyone looked over at Kaede, who had been listening quietly to Kagome's tale of the Wind God. Now she put down her tea and said, "There's something else, Kagome," she said.
"Oh," she said, suddenly remembering. "Yes, we need to find a place for Grandpa to stay. We can't take him with us, but I don't think I'll be able to send him back yet."
"Hey!" said Mr. Higurashi.
"Well, we can't take you along, Gramps!" she said. "It's going to be dangerous, and I don't want you to get hurt! Besides, you can't fly that well anymore, and well…"
"So basically you're saying what the dog guy said earlier," said Mr. Higurashi.
'Dog guy?' thought Inuyasha, feeling a little tweaked. But Kagome was watching him carefully, so he didn't say anything, and the only sign of his agitation was the way he lay his ears down on his head.
"Well…I guess so, Grandpa," she said. "But I happen to have civilized manners when I say so."
Inuyasha growled very slightly, but otherwise remained passive.
"That's true," Miroku agreed. Sango and Shippou nodded.
At this Inuyasha stood up.
"Okay, I get it!" he said angrily. "You guys don't want me near her, fine! I'll be waiting outside." He turned and exited the house, but doubled back and sat near a window at the back of the house.
"Okay, so, what do we do with Grandpa?" asked Kagome, and Inuyasha could hear that she was trying very hard to act as though nothing had happened. To his surprise, she sounded close to tears, and that made him feel a little guilty.
"Well, he could stay with me," said Kaede. "That way when the time comes, ye can bring him to the shrine easily, and have him sent back home."
"Oh, great! Thank you so much, Kaede," said Kagome gratefully.
"Now that that's settled, please leave me with Kagome. I wish to speak to her alone."
"Of course, lady Kaede," said Miroku. Inuyasha listened as the other four stood and exited the hut. Kaede and Kagome listened until they were out of earshot. Then Kagome turned to Kaede.
"What is it, Kaede?" she asked.
"Kagome, I noticed a tension between ye and Inuyasha today," said Kaede mildly. "What happened between ye two last night?"
Inuyasha stiffened, and since his hearing was so acute, he heard Kagome do the same. She forced a smile. "Oh, nothing really. We just disagreed on something and…"
She trailed off, and for a moment there was silence. Then, suddenly, she burst into tears.
"Okay, it was something big," she said. "We kissed last night Kaede, and you know that by the rules, I'm not allowed to get romantically involved with anyone."
"Oh, my," said Kaede, sounding surprised.
"And now that we've done that, I feel like there's something between us, feelings that shouldn't be there! The gods wish me to remain pure, but after that, I'm not pure at all!"
"Kagome, calm down!" said Kaede. "A kiss does not make ye impure, but ye must make sure it does not happen again."
Kagome nodded, wiping her eyes and panting.
"Now," said Kaede, "have ye told Inuyasha about this?"
"No," said Kagome softly. "We're already on thin ice with each other. I don't want to ruin everything. I…I really do like him, Kaede, but I can't, I'm not allowed to, and so it's all so confusing."
Outside, Inuyasha's ears perked up. 'She likes me?' he thought with surprise.
"I understand, Kagome, but perhaps ye need to make him understand. You've sent him mixed signals, and when I saw him, he looked very sad. Ye two need to talk and come to an understanding. He is probably just as confused as ye, maybe even more so. He may not act like it, but he has feelings too."
"Yes," said Kagome softly. "I know. Sometimes I wonder if he does, though."
"What?"
"He always acts like nothing bothers him, and that makes me wonder if he's immune to his own feelings, or is he just one of those 'I don't like to talk about my feelings' guys."
"Well, that is something ye will have to figure out on your own, child," Kaede answered. "Now I suggest ye go and find him, and try to work things out."
"I will," said Kagome. She stood up, and so did Kaede. "Thanks, Kaede, for talking to me. I feel a lot better now."
"Nothing to worry about, Kagome," she said kindly. Kagome bowed and left the room, leaving Kaede to think to herself and Inuyasha to sit outside, marveling at what he had just heard.
'She likes me,' he thought. 'Oh shit I have to get out of here so she can find me and we can talk.'
He leapt out from behind the house and sat under the same tree they had met Kaede under. A few minutes later, Kagome walked by. He didn't say anything to her, but when she spotted him, she sat down beside him.
"Hi," she said nervously.
He nodded as an acknowledgement. 'I have to act like I didn't hear anything,' he thought to himself.
"Look, Inuyasha, we have to talk," she said seriously.
"About what?"
"About last night, duh!" she said. "I know you want an explanation, so here it is." She took a deep breath. "I'm not allowed to get romantically involved with anyone."
At this he looked at her. "Why not?" he asked.
"The gods want me to remain pure until the end of the task," she said. "I don't know why but that's what they told me. So even if you wanted to do that again, which I highly doubt you do, you would have to wait till after the task is done." She looked away. "I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings."
They sat in silence for a few moments, and then Inuyasha pulled her into his arms. They embraced tightly, Kagome's eyes tearing up again.
'This isn't side-stepping any boundaries,' she thought, closing her eyes and burying her face in his neck. 'I'm allowed to do this at least.'
"If that's what it takes, Kagome," he said to her, "then I think we can both wait."
She pulled back in surprise. "You still want to try?" she asked incredulously.
"After last night, what did you think?" he asked.
She glanced off to the side. "I thought it was a one time only thing," she said.
He sighed. "Kikyou again?" he asked.
She nodded.
"Look, she's over with. And I don't like you for her, okay? Yes, I'm admitting I like you, and it's for you, Kagome, not for her, so you can relax, okay?"
She nodded, and he pulled her to him again, and they sat under the tree quietly, just holding each other. If that was all they could have, they didn't care, they'd take it.
"Well, well, well," said a voice suddenly. "If it isn't Inuyasha."
Inuyasha's head snapped up and his ears perked uncomfortably. He knew that voice, that voice that had haunted him for 35 years, and the one he hoped to never hear again. He turned his head slowly, and Kagome looked up too. Their eyes fell upon a figure who looked achingly like Kagome. Eyes the same color, hair the same color, and within each other's heights. The only differences were that this person had no wings, she wore a priestess outfit, her hair was pulled back into a low ponytail, and her bangs were much straighter than Kagome's.
Kagome and Inuyasha stood up, and Kagome, after seeing Inuyasha's apparent anger and discomfort, realized suddenly who it was.
"Kikyou."
