Ch. 1. Past & Present

(Present day: In San Francisco, California)

“Shippo Mashita, its 7:30 a.m. it's time to get ready for school,” yelled a young raven-haired girl from downstairs who looked like she was trying her hardest to get her young charge to school before she headed to class herself.
“Awe, come on Kagome do I have to go to school?” said the 8 yr. old kitsune.
“You already know the answer to that question Shippo. Besides, you promised you wouldn't give me trouble in the morning if you expected me to drop you off. Unless of course, you would rather have Rin take you to school you can wait for her to get ready. But I have to go NOW.” Kagome stressed out for the young kitsune.

The young kitsune scrunched up his face and frowned. He hated going to school because he didn't have any friends there and all the other kids were mean to him all the time.
However, Kagome had promised him that in the next fall she would place him in a new school and hope that it would be better than the one he was already attending. So reluctantly he went upstairs to get his backpack knowing full well he would have to face going to school today.

Nevertheless in the long run this was a typical morning in the Oshiro-Mashita-Ihara household.

Kagome Oshiro was only 20 yrs. Old and was soon going to be turning 21 in a few months. Yet already she was taking care of a child, holding down a job, and still going to classes. Although, in her mind her situation wasn't too awful considering she could actually manage it all. She always figured that some of it was probably due to the fact that it wasn't just Shippo and herself in this house. No there was another person living with them, as well. Rin Ihara was also a student at the local university with Kagome. Even though, she's only 19 and has only known Kagome for such a short time. The two were close like sisters. As for, Shippo he's a different story completely.

Both Kagome and Rin knew Shippo's mother, Sari Mashita from school. The poor girl worked hard to support herself and her son. She did everything she could to give Shippo the life he deserved but regretfully it wasn't enough. The young mother was befriended by the two girls early on in the semester at school. Both Kagome and Rin took turns watching after the young kitsune while his mother went off to work. Soon enough, Kagome thought that the four of them should move into together. She figured it would be easier if they had a permanent residence instead of herself and Rin living at the dorms, and Sari and Shippo in the two room apartment she had. This accommodation suited everyone that way if Sari ever had to leave in an emergency to work someone would always be with Shippo. It wasn't very long afterward they moved in together that tragedy struck. Sari unfortunately was killed in a car accident leaving Shippo by himself. When that happened Kagome and Rin made a promise to raise him since they knew his mother would have approved of that.

Kagome tapped her foot lightly while waiting for Shippo to get his things so she could take him to school. She knew the reason why Shippo didn't want to go to school and hated the idea of having to send him knowing that he would only be upset at the end of the day. Unfortunately, there wasn't any choice in any situation.

For one both she and Rin both went to classes in the morning until midday, afterwards both of them had to go to work for at least a couple of hours. Besides, they didn't know anyone in the neighborhood that was able to care of Shippo. So there wasn't really anyone to leave him with. Also, both girls had flexible schedules yet they both still led very hectic lives. First having to go to school everyday, and then having to go to work on various days. Besides, they had to make sure one of them was always available to pickup Shippo from school, and to stay with him, as well. Not to mention, have some time off to spend with him, too. Furthermore, putting time aside for studying, and other important work that to be done. So it wasn't easy for them, but both girls managed it as best as they could and so far they have been able to get along fine.

Still waiting for Shippo in the kitchen Kagome began to think.

`Day after day it's the same old story Shippo doesn't want to go to school and I wind up having to convince him he doesn't have much of choice. Who would have ever thought that I would be in this kind of situation? Never had I imagined my life taking this turn.
My life has certainly changed from the one I had before…'

At that last thought Kagome snapped out of her reverie.

Her old life…She had never thought about it until now. She promised herself that she would never again remember that part of her which she had left behind.

`Stop it Kagome! Don't start thinking about it,' she told herself.

She only knew that thinking about the past would only make her upset. So far she had managed to move on and not look back. However, there was always apart of her still that always held some sort of recollection of then. Because it was those memories that haunted her endlessly she always feared that her past would catch up with her. For it was a simple solution to run…run to the farthest corner of the world and just disappear. Hoping…no…praying never to be found again she didn't want to be dragged back into that life again. For many reasons she left her home, her family, her friends, and her previous life. But that was over with. She had a new life, a new family. Nevertheless, those past memories still haunted her. She still remembered as if it was like yesterday.

(Three year Ago: Tokyo, Japan)

A young raven-haired girl was hurryingly packing her belongings in her suitcases and backpack. The reason she was in a hurry was because nobody was home and that it was the perfect time to leave without being noticed. She knew what she was doing was probably wrong. However, this was her life and she didn't want to live it like this.
She also knew that she was taking a big risk by leaving Tokyo. She knew if she didn't cover her tracks her father would find away to look for her and then bring her back.
At first glance one would have to wonder why this girl was leaving in the first place. Well this girl had her reasons. It's not that she didn't love her family. It was just that she couldn't understand how her father could live his life always putting his family in danger every time.

For Kai Higurashi was a very well-known man throughout Asia, and other parts of the world. His doings were the root of all problems. If only he would leave that life behind him and move on to something worthwhile than maybe she would reconsider leaving.

But no!

There were times when she begged him, and even at times when she threatened her father to change. For her mother had done so also, but at a certain point in life she realized her husband would never change regardless of whatever effort she did. So, the young girl tried. She really did but at some point she had enough and couldn't take it anymore.
She got tired of the death threats to the entire family, attempts on her life, attempts on her fathers' life, attempts on the other members of her family, she hated being followed by bodyguards everywhere she went, she was tired of not being able to live a normal life because her father was quick at making enemies, and knew how to anger people who would like to destroy him. She despised at times the lies he told her mother, herself, and to the rest of the family just to protect them all from something dangerous. In general she couldn't deal anymore. She tried to talk it out, she kept giving her father second chances to change, but every time it turned out the same. She just got fed up with the entire situation and wanted out. For nobody understood how she felt. Her family thought that she should already be used to this sort of thing, her friends weren't any help since they got a thrill out of living the high life of being related to people like her father.

As a result, Kagome Higurashi had decided to leave Tokyo…leave and never come back. To Kagome it was the only solution available at the moment. She wanted to start over so she knew that she had to go far away where nobody knew her. She would change herself, her lifestyle, anything that would get her away from the life she was living in now.

She knew her parents loved her yet that wasn't the problem. The only problem which was always the problem was her father. If only he didn't always risk his life, his family, and worse of all his principles. Kagome would never have any problems dealing with the situation. But because how things were she realized she could never live with what he did. Yet she was only eighteen and had already made a huge decision. One that would change her whole life and the life of her family but she felt like there wasn't any other way out. Sure she was probably being a coward and taking the easy way out but she didn't care. All she wanted was to be free to live her life without the interference of her family, and her father's doings. Besides, everything she would miss them horribly.
She would miss her mother, her little brother Souta, her Grandmother Kaede, her Grandfather Miato, also her cousin Kikyou. She would even miss her father despite the fact that he was the main reason for leaving in the first place.

So she came up with a plan. She decided the best time to leave would be when everyone would be gone from the house. Which was basically simple because practically everyday everyone had their own to-do list.

Her father would leave the house at 8:00 in the morning after having breakfast with his family afterwards he would go to one of his businesses to see how they were doing. Her father owned various businesses that were both legal and illegal. The legal part of his business mostly consisted of a multi-national corporation of dealings with import and export of goods. The rest of the other legitimate businesses were a bit smaller but still brought in huge amounts of profits. Not to mention, some casinos that he invested in with a couple of business partners. Overall, the facade of Kai Higurashi which he played was only to keep the police away from his `other' dealings. Such as, smuggled goods which consisted of illegal arms, drugs (like cocaine, heroine), at times for doing that he would use his importing and exporting business as a front for that, and other such contraband.

Her mother always kept herself entertained by doing many things. She ran the household, every so often she would do some of the food preparation for her family (she always thought that a woman should be taught how to maintain a house with and without the help of servants). Also, on occasion she would go to luncheons with some of her friends, an important meeting, or she spent some of the time doing errands for herself, her husband, or her children. So basically each day she had something to do.

Her brother Souta had school each day (except for the weekends), he sometimes stayed after school for either baseball or soccer practice, or he would be hangout with them after school, and every so often he would also spend the night at one of his friend's house too.

Her Grandmother Kaede and Grandfather Miato were retreated to Kyoto visit an ancient shrine that was located there. Both of them were always traveling to different places in the world. When they were in Tokyo both of them would usually keep themselves amused as best as they could. Meaning Grandmother Kaede would visit with old friends, family, or she would spend time with her grandchildren. Sometimes she would even join Kagome's mother on several outings anything to keep oneself out of the house regularly. Her Grandfather Miato always spent time either in the ancient shrine that belonged to Higurashi family, at the city library researching the history of the shrine, or about the family, most of the time he would spend it with his grandchildren, or with his friends too.
As for, cousin Kikyou she did what most people her age did. Like Kagome she spent time going to school, staying at home with the family, going out with friends, or doing other things.

But today everybody was gone and doing something. That was why Kagome was taking the opportunity to pack her stuff and leave before anybody got home. As far, as she was concerned Kagome had everything ready. A plane ticket to New York City and from there she would decide where to go. She had arranged beforehand all the documents necessary to change her name. Even though, she was only going to change her maiden name to Oshiro instead of it being Higurashi. Also, she had decided to use an account that she had started under an unknown name so she would have money for when she got there. Not to mention, she planned on living very modestly. She didn't want any hints to her past life and the only way to do that was to change completely.

After stuffing the last thing into her backpack Kagome headed out the door without a single glance back. She knew what she was doing. That was the only thing that truly mattered and since then she had been on her own. It had been hard at first but in the end she managed to move on ahead.

(End of flashback)

(Back to the Present day)

Kagome just sat there thinking over about the past. Since that day she came to live in the U.S. she wondered how her family had taken her departure. She hadn't even left a note behind explaining why she left. She just left. At times, she wanted to pick up a telephone, a cell phone, or even send an e-mail at times just to tell her family that she was alright.
But she was too afraid to do so. Always afraid that they would find her and make her go back home. For that reason she never did it.

While she continued to sit there thinking about the past. She felt a sudden tug on her sleeve. Snapping out of her reverie she realized that Shippo was ready to go to school.
Putting the past in the back of her mind she grabbed her car keys and tugged on Shippo's hand so that they could get going. Not realizing that sooner or later the past was going to catch up with her and she wasn't going to be able to hide any longer.
