InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Treason's Emotion ❯ Fallen Souls ( Chapter 8 )
Chapter 8 - Fallen Souls
A/N: Okay... I have given up on the whole 5 review thing because you lovely readers don't seem to be capable of doing it! ^_^ I'll just post the chapters as soon as I finish them from now on, but remember, the more you review the more motivated I will be and the faster I will get the chapter done!
You know what I noticed? On like, every fanfic it says something like "Disclaimer - Inuyasha does not belong to me" or something like that. And then I realized that I don't do that on this fic... Well... to make up for all the chapters that I didn't put that, I'll put it now.
Disclaimer - I do not own Inuyasha... He is not mine... etc.
There. I don't really know why people put that anyways.. Obviously none of us own Inuyasha! This is a fanfic site. Emphasis on fan. Therefore, we are only the fans who write stories about the characters that other people, such as Rumiko Takahashi, originally invented. Okay, enough mindless babbling about things that do not directly concern the story. On with chapter 8!

Shivering slightly, Kagome abruptly sat up. The sunlight shone down on her, and mist was hovering over the water of the spring. The red haori that she had wrapped around her body fell from her chest and landed in a small pile on the ground beside her. Her naked body was damp from the morning dew, and her hair was wet and scattered with leaves. A small tear fell from her eye, blending in with the other small droplets of dew had appeared on her form. Flashes of last night flickered through her mind: The kiss Inuyasha and she had shared. The feel of his body against hers. His silky hair running between her fingers. And then she came. Kikyou. Kagome remembered the sadness that had risen in Inuyasha's eyes. She had grasped onto him so tightly when he had got up to leave, but he had shoved her aside as if she was unimportant; as if she was a nuisance to him, like she was only in the way. Kagome felt her heart shatter as she watched Inuyasha jump across the spring and leave with Kikyou.
`I can't love you anymore, Inuyasha. I just can't...'
The words rang through her mind yet again. It was true... How could she love someone who didn't really care for her? How could she love someone who treated her like she was invisible when that other woman came around?
`He doesn't love me. I will not let myself love him.'
Inuyasha loved Kikyou. He still loved her even after all she had done to him. Shoving back the tears that were pouring from her eyes, she stood up and walked over to her clothes. She dressed quickly and began to walk back to Kaede's hut. However, after taking a couple steps she stopped and spun around. Lying on the ground beside the hot spring was Inuyasha's haori; the one that he had given to Kagome the night before. She slowly walked over to it, crouching to pick it up in one hand, and then standing again. She looked at it in her hand for a long time, not really seeing the shirt, but remembering all the years and moments she had spent with Inuyasha. Glancing and the spring one more time, she slowly turned around and began walking back to the village. She was silent, a blank expression on her face and her eyes full of despair as she glared mindlessly at the ground. After a few minutes of walking, she glanced behind her shoulder, wondering if the hot spring was still in sight. Trees and the dirt path was all that was visible, so she turned her head back around and continued walking. The soft, red material of Inuyasha's haori slipped through Kagome's fingers and fell onto the ground, landing in a small heap in the middle of the path. Kagome's eyes flickered down to her empty hand before returning once more to stare blankly ahead of her. She clenched her now empty hand so tightly her knuckles grew white. Her nails dug into her palm causing her great pain, but Kagome ignored it. A small line of blood trickled down her hand as a small line of tears trickled down her cheek, unable to hold them back any longer.
**
A long branch swayed in the breeze, brushing over Inuyasha's sleeping body. He cracked an eye open, allowing it to adjust to the bright light before opening the other eye and doing the same. The wind blew again and he looked up to see the branches of the willow tree sway peacefully. Peaceful. Exactly the opposite of what the hanyou was feeling at that moment.
"Oh fuck. What have I done!?" Inuyasha cursed loudly, sitting up abruptly and smacking his head on a thick log.
"Ow!" the hanyou yelled and rubbed his forehead. After Kikyou had left, Inuyasha had sat down beneath the willow tree that Kikyou had led him to. It was there beneath that willow tree that Inuyasha had expressed his undying love towards the undead priestess.
`My undying love? Do I really love Kikyou? I know that I did 50 years ago, but now... I had promised her that I would love her for ever, but then Naraku pitted us against each other. Damn him. When I thought she had betrayed me, did I love her then?' Inuyasha thought as he watched the small river bubble and flow noisily along.
`I just don't know. And then she died. She's dead, damn it! But then, just over a year ago, she came back. But her soul is tainted. It isn't pure like before. Can I love her when she isn't even the same person? And then last night Kikyou came and took me here, away from the hot spring. Kagome was there. Kagome...'
"Oh Shit!! Kagome!" Inuyasha yelled as he jumped up and sped through the forest. How on earth could he have forgotten about her!? He had been kissing her and she had been naked and he had been lying on top of her! If Kikyou hadn't of come they may have gone a lot farther than only kissing, and then he had just left her there all alone and had forgotten about her until just now.
`I'm such an idiot! She must hate me. I don't deserve to be with her.'
`But you're not with her, ne? Just last night you had said you wanted to be with Kikyou.' His mind argued.
`Shut the fuck up! Oh what have I gotten myself into?' Inuyasha scowled. The hanyou arrived at the hot spring and sniffed the air, looking for a sign of Kagome. She was gone; she had left not too long ago. That meant that she had spent the night there all alone. Overwhelming guilt swam through Inuyasha's body and he shut his eyes and buried his face in his hands. Inuyasha raised his head and began slowly walking down the path back towards Kaede's hut. It was then that he smelled it. Blood. Kagome's blood.
`No!'
The hanyou ran blindly towards the source of the smell and stumbled across a red piece of fabric. Curiously, he picked it up. It was his haori; the haori that he had given Kagome to wear. The smell of the miko's blood was driving him insane. What could have happened to her? Worry boiled up inside of him, but there was something else there too. What was it...? Was that... pain? Pain at the thought that something could have harmed Kagome? His Kagome? What if she was dead? At that thought Inuyasha's heart clenched and his head throbbed, and the emotional pain consumed his entity. It was then that he realized that he could not live without her. That if she was dead and it was all his fault, he would not be able to live with himself.
`Well what the fuck did I do last night then!? What about the promise that I made to Kikyou!?'
`Just find Kagome. She needs to be okay.'
At that Inuyasha raced off and began to search the woods. He leapt up high above the trees and glanced around him, but did not see any sign of the young girl. Ahead he could see the village and Kaede's hut beneath the slowly rising sun. It was still early in the morning. Miroku and the others would be there at the hut. They could help him find Kagome; the Kagome who's blood was now scatted around the path of the forest. With all the speed he could muster, the hanyou practically flew towards the village and reached it in a matter of minutes. He desperately flung the curtain of Kaede's hut aside.
"Miroku! Sango! You have to help me find-" And there she was. Sitting upright in the corner of the hut was Kagome, tears stained her face, but she seemed to have stopped crying for the time being. She stared blankly into the darkness of the hut, not seeming to even have noticed that Inuyasha had just burst through the door and started yelling at the top of his lungs for her companions. All Inuyasha could do was stare at her. The others stirred in their sleep, unbelievably not having been woken by the screaming hanyou. Inuyasha took a step closer and raised his hand slightly towards the girl.
"Kagome. I..."
It was then that the young priestess snapped out of her daze. Her mind had gone numb from all of the pain that had been coursing through it, but now it was back full force. Kagome slowly rose her head to face Inuyasha, not saying a word but only looking at him. Her eyes. The saddest expression capable was written so deep in her eyes. It was like her soul had broken. Like all she was left with was a terrible emptiness and this horrible hurting despair. Inuyasha couldn't handle it. It was too much to bear that he had caused her to feel this way.
"Kagome... I'm so sorry. Please-"
"No."
"Kagome, please!! Forgive-"
"No, Inuyasha." The miko's gaze did not waver from the hanyou's, but her eyes were glazed over, as if she wasn't really seeing at him at all. She then turned her head back and stared into the darkness. They stayed there in silence; Inuyasha looking at Kagome, and Kagome curled up in the corner and staring absentmindedly at the wall. Neither of them moved as the minutes ticked by. Finally, Inuyasha sighed in defeat and began to turn around but Kagome's voice cut through the silence.
"Do you know what you have done? To me? Can you even comprehend what exactly I am feeling right now? I can never trust you again. You couldn't possibly know what I am going through."
Inuyasha turned around and gazed at her, slightly shocked that she had talked to him. Guilt, despair, and pain flickered through his mind.
"What did she say to you, Inuyasha? What was so important that made you leave me there, all alone, as if I were unimportant, as if you didn't care? What did she want?"
"Kagome, I.."
"What did she want Inuyasha!?" Kagome almost yelled. Silence for a moment. This was truly the worst Inuyasha had ever felt in his life. How could he tell her what she had said?
"She... She..."
"She what?"
"She wanted... to know if I still... love her." Inuyasha whispered the last words so softly that Kagome wouldn't have been able to hear them if it wasn't for the deafening silence that hung in the air. The expression on the miko's face didn't change. Besides, it was impossible for it to look any sadder anyways.
"And.. and what did you say?" Kagome muttered, still staring blankly at the wall. Inuyasha could almost feel his heart break at the tone of Kagome's voice. She sounded so sad, so lost. The usual happiness and energy that Inuyasha loved about her was now gone, and all she was left with was her deep despair and a horrible empty hole in her heart.
"I.. I..." Inuyasha breathed.
"I... Kagome, please!?" Inuyasha yelled, pure agony streaming through every inch of his body and soul. It was then that Kagome turned to look at him. The pieces of Inuyasha's already broken heart broke into even smaller pieces.
"Bastard... Leave me alone. Just... just... get away from me. I.. I hate you." Kagome whispered so quietly that Inuyasha had to swivel his ears to catch every word. The already miniscule pieces of the hanyou's heart disintegrated into dust. It seemed like the immense emptiness and despair that Kagome felt had suddenly tripled and had been transferred to him, consuming Inuyasha's entire being. He thought he would die. He had dreaded those words; no, he had feared them. And now that they had been said, it seemed like the world was falling apart around him, but he didn't care. All Inuyasha cared about at that instant was Kagome; the girl who's heart he had broken, and who had disintegrated his own.
