“Come back here!”
“Never!”
“Rrr…You’re my woman, I said come back here!”
“I’m not your woman!”
The wolf prince growled as his woman caught another burst of speed. Running through the forest like this was not what he had imagined when he told her that she would be his mate.
“Damn it! I promised to mate you, and I will!” Kouga smirked as he gained distance on the frightened girl. Why did she even bother running? She might have been a lesser goddess, but he was a greater demon. Had they been the same gender it would have been a tie.
But he was male. To him, the victor was already decided.
“Oh, Kami.” The girl breathed hard. Would her elders save her?
Could anybody?
Hope filled her thoughts as breath filled her lungs when she realized where she was. Yes-this was definitely it. She recognized the wizened trees and she could hear the trickling river.
Running out into an open field, the goddess stopped and raised her arms above her head. Looking to the sky she pleaded desperately.
“Grandpa, save me!”
Kouga skidded to a stop at the edge of the field. What was the woman up to?
Before his eyes the sky grew dark and the goddess grinned as she stared him down.
She knew she had won.
Kouga sprinted to her side, but it was too late. Gnarled bark formed on her face and skin, and her feet sunk slowly into the ground.
Before his very eyes, his woman’s grandfather had saved her-by transforming her into a tree.
“Why?” The question hung heavy in the air as the last of his woman’s human appearance began to fade.
“I don’t love you, Kouga.”
Kouga’s face twisted as the last of her changed. He turned and glared darkly at the river.
“Damn you!” He yelled in pain.
He didn’t know what else to say to her grandfather.
Turning angrily, he gave one last look to his beloved-now a tree-and stalked off.
