Kagome wondered if Inuyasha felt as uncomfortable as he looked. Their reservations had been flubbed up at the restaurant, so now they were waiting.
She felt wonderful in her yukata. Kikyo had come over earlier in the day to help her fix her hair, and Kagome was absolutely thrilled with how it turned out. In the delicate up-do Kikyo had gone all out and added fresh daisies. The look on Inuyasha's face had been priceless as she had come out into the living room. Rarely had he reacted to her in such a manner, and all in all it made Kagome feel like a princess.
His costume made him look even more handsome than Kagome thought he normally did. He wore a hakama and kimono both in a rich red, his long black hair tied back in a braid. His eyes widened as he took in her appearance. "Kagome... Wow."
He met her half way between the couch and the hallway. "You look amazing."
Kagome blushed and smiled demurely. "Thanks."
Like the perfect gentleman, he offered his arm and escorted her out of the apartment.
Arriving at the restaurant, his gentlemanly attitude disappeared.
"Whaddaya mean you double booked??"
Kagome took a deep calming breath as Inuyasha gave the waiter a piece of his mind. "I paid damn good money for a special meal and made reservations last fucking week, and you tell me this now?"
The poor waiter held up his hands and apologized profusely, though it just went into one of Inuyasha's ears and right out the other. "I sincerely apologize sir, but -"
"Manager. Now."
The boy scrambled off in the direction of the back of the restaurant. Inuyasha looked back at Kagome, who had her face buried in her hands.
"Inuyasha, was that really necessary?"
Instantly he felt bad, seeing the embarrassment written on her face. "I wanted this to be special," he said, gently pulling her hands away from her face. "This will be our first dinner together and I wanted it to be perfect."
"We've had dinner together lots of times," she said, rolling her eyes a bit.
He shook his head. "Not like this, not as an us."
Kagome looked dumbstruck. "You want there to be an us?"
"I have for a long time."
Kagome seemed to brighten. "At least we have a memorable first date."
He chuckled. "Ain't that the truth."
A stout little man came out of the back room with the scared looking waiter following close behind him. He walked directly up to Inuyasha and shook his hand. "I sincerely apologize, Mr. Watanabe. There has been a mixup, but we are prepared to offer you one of our finest private dining rooms in exchange."
Inuyasha nodded. "That would be excellent."
The two of them followed the man back to the back of the restaurant, into a romantically lit traditional dining room. They didn't have to wait long for food to start coming from the kitchen, course by course.
"So," Kagome began, "when did you decide that this was an us?"
Inuyasha scratched his chin in mock contemplation. "Oh, I'd say junior year of college."
She snorted. "Don't hesitate to speak up right away, by all means!"
"I didn't think you would want me that way," he admitted. "Haven't you ever wondered why I chose a woman who looked so much like you?"
"Yeah right," she said, waving her hand. "I so do not look like Kikyo."
Everyone knew that was a lie. They could have been sisters. They were like night and day, but looked so similar it was scary. The only difference seemed to be Kikyo had a few more inches on Kagome, and a lot more curves.
"So you are saying that you would have been with me if I asked."
"Possibly."
They both sat in silence, contemplating their situation. "You are willing to try now?"
"Why not? You're my best friend. I'm just afraid to lose you."
Inuyasha grabbed her hands from across the table. "You won't lose me, ever. Even if something happens between us, I'd never just let you walk away."
Her smile was reassuring, but she still seemed rather sad. "I don't want to lose you as a friend."
"You won't, I promise."
The rest of the dinner went on just like if they would have been at home, full of conversation and joking.
They left the restaurant both in a joyful mood, both slightly drunk, and walked the few blocks from the restaurant to the shrine.
Mrs. Higurashi and Grandpa were waiting for them outside of the well house.
"I'm so glad the both of you could make it," Mrs. Higurashi said, hugging both of them. "It's getting ready to start."
The four of them walked through the grounds, Inuyasha and Kagome hand in hand, to the Goshinboku.
As soon as they sat down, the show began. Fireworks of all colours lit up the sky.
Kagome grinned as she felt Inuyasha wrap an arm around her. "Thank you for coming with me," she said, leaning her head on his shoulder.
"Thank you," he whispered.
The show was magnificent this year, much brighter and longer than any previous year Kagome could remember. It was even warmer than usual. Or maybe it was the company!
After the display the two of them took a taxi back to their apartment, Kagome snuggled into Inuyasha's side the entire way.
Like a perfect gentleman, Inuyasha walked Kagome to her bedroom door.
"I had a great time tonight, Inuyasha," she said, beaming.
He smiled down at her. "So did I, Kagome." He bridged the gap between them and took her into his arms, showering kisses on her face and neck, making her giggle whenever he hit a ticklish spot. Slowly he began walking her backwards into her room.
"Inuyasha, what are you doing?" she questioned as his hands started to fumble with her obi.
"What do you think?" he asked, finally pulling the obi free and starting to work on the other various ties that kept the outfit together.
Kagome shook her head and pulled away. "You know I never have sex on the first date."
"Well," he replied, pulling her back toward him by her now loose kimono, "we've known each other for like ten years. Why not just skip the formalities and cut to the sex?"
Kagome saw red and slapped Inuyasha as hard as she could. "Get out of my room, stupid!"
Inuyasha looked dazed and confused. "What did I do?"
Her eyes widened. "Just cut to the sex, Inuyasha? What kind of woman do you take me for?" She almost felt bad for him; he looked genuinely saddened.
"What kind of woman, Kagome? I've loved you practically from the moment we met, so I don't see anything standing in front of me other than the woman I love." He tried to pull her toward him again to kiss her but she pushed away.
"I love you dearly, Inuyasha, and this day was special, but cool your heels! Declarations of love aren't going to make me obediently fall into bed with you. At the restaurant I told you I didn't want to ruin our friendship, and I have the feeling that if I let this happen tonight something will change." Gently she shoved him toward the door. "I'm very angry at you right now, and a little hurt that you would ignore my feelings and thoughts. Please leave me alone, I need to think."
Defeated, Inuyasha walked out of the room, leaving Kagome alone with her thoughts.
----------
The next morning Inuyasha crawled out of bed expecting to smell breakfast cooking, expecting to hear Kagome singing off key in the kitchen as she danced around and cooked.
Nothing.
There was no savory smells filling the apartment, no silly singing from his roomie turned...whatever she was.
Just a note taped to the fridge.
Inuyasha,
I've gone to my mother's for a while. I need to think. I don't know when I'll be back. I am feeling really hurt and don't want to see you right now. After you went to bed I made enough food for a week at least; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is neatly packed in the freezer with heating instructions.
Kagome
Inuyasha pulled one of the containers labeled 'breakfast' from the freezer and started heating it per Kagome's instructions. He knew it was a stupid idea to ask to cut to the sex, but it just seemed right! Isn't that what people did in a relationship?
As he waited for his food to heat, he grabbed his cell phone off of the counter and quickly dialed.
"It's six thirty in the morning, Inuyasha. Your date went wrong, didn't it?"
He wanted to snap at her, some sort of sarcastic remark, but the only thing that came out was a 'yup' that sounded more like a squeak.
"I knew it! What did you do?"
"Kikyo, she hates me."
"Well, I can't help you fix it if you don't tell me what you did."
He took a deep breath. "I told her I loved her and to cut the formalities and jump to the sex."
Inuyasha jerked the phone away from his head while Kikyo gave him a piece of her mind. He knew he was stupid, he didn't need her to drive that point home even more. What he needed was advice on how to win Kagome back.
When he was positive that she was finished, he put the phone back to his ear. "Now what do I do?"
"I'm sorry, Inuyasha. This is something you are going to have to work out for yourself."
"What??"
"If you can get yourself into this mess, you can get yourself out of it. My best advice right now is to stop being a dumbass."
"What do you mean a - She hung up on me." He pouted.
The first thing that needed to be done was a plan. He needed to work out a plan.
Rather than sit and think at the kitchen table like he had seen Kagome do many times over the years, he did what he did best: he grabbed his guitar and began to play.
She felt wonderful in her yukata. Kikyo had come over earlier in the day to help her fix her hair, and Kagome was absolutely thrilled with how it turned out.
