Chapter 2: Greener on the Other Side2004
"Where are you boy!!?" an angry voice chilled the afternoon air.
I sat in my room, sketching as usual. It was either sketch in my air conditioned room, or go into the ninety degree weather with ninety percent humidity and skateboard. Air conditioning sounded good to me.
"Boy! Get down here! NOW!" I rolled my eyes and walked downstairs.
"Yes Sir?" I asked from the kitchen doorway.
"We're renting out the cottage." he said as though that explained everything. "Go clean it." he explained.
I looked at the man I called 'father' and tried so hard not to scream.
My life wasn't bad, but it's not like it was good. I grabbed the bucket my dad was holding for me, and walked out the back door.
The cottage was only a couple yards from the house, so shoes were pointless in my opinion. I took the spare key out of the light box and walked into the cottage.
Dust and mold overtook my nose and I began sneezing like there was no tomorrow. The cottage hadn't been used in some ten years - since my mom left. So, she didn't really leave, but it sounds better than what happened.
I opened the back door and all the windows, then set to work. The cottage was semi-furnished. Luckily one of those furnishings was a CD player. I crept into my room to grab my CDs. If my dad saw me he'd think I wasn't working and I'd be in for it.
I snuck back downstairs - avoiding the ones that would give me away - I was outside on my way to the cottage when I stopped.
My father was standing in the doorway - bottle in hand. He turned around as I began my explanations.
"Dad . . . I'm working. I just went to get my CD's. See?" I held up the case - proving my story.
"Boy!" he came at me - like he had done so many times before. "Laziness is unacceptable. Laziness is not tolerated in my house! You got that?"
"Yes Sir!" I answered as though her were a sergeant and I merely a private. But it was much worse than that.
"I'm a teach you a lesson Inuyasha!"
"Please. No. I'm not being lazy. Please!"
"Quit your sniveling. I'm in no mood boy!" I stopped pleading and held my fears inside.
I waited for my beating to end. You would think I'd be used to them. I'm not. It still hurts. I still bleed. And every time I miss my Mother more and more. My weak defenseless mother. No, dad didn't kill her. She managed that herself. She left me to shoulder the blame. Not that I wouldn't have anyway . . . Even when I was little I would have protected her. I don't understand how she could leave . . . without me.
I woke up some time later. It was dark out now. The July heat still scorching however. I sat up, looking at my surroundings. He didn't even put me on the porch this time. Shaking my head I grabbed my CDs and walked into the cottage, guided only by the small light from the light box. I put in a CD and turned it on low - my dad can hear everything. I checked my watch . . . 10:07 . . I set to work.
I fell asleep somewhere in the night, waking up to the grunt of approval from my Father. I noted the grunt, The Used playing on the stereo and the sound of birds. Then my eyes opened.
"Shower. Then change." that was all he said.
I gathered up the cleaning supplies and my CDs and did as I was told.
By the time I emerged from my morning routine, he was all ready set to eating his breakfast. I found a box of cereal - Spiderman - and poured a small bowl. Even though I was considerably more hungry than that.
"They arrive today." he stated over the paper. "Greet them." he folded the paper "There's a list of information in the living room." and stood up. "I'm off to work." he left without a clearing the table or a simple 'Bye'. I cleaned up the dishes and moved into the TV room where I waited the arrival of our new tenants.
A few hours later I heard a car outside, I went to the window to see who it was. I recognized the car immediately and went outside.
"Hey Miroku." I high-fived him once he was in range.
"Sup Yash?" he replied. "Wanna chill down at the skate park?"
"Can't. We're renting out our cottage, so I need to wait for the tenants." I explained.
"That sucks. We're all going down. Kik's gonna be there." Miroku nudged me in my ribs, my sore, aching ribs. I laughed it off.
"I'm usually down for leaving the house but - if Dad finds out I didn't show 'em around - " I let my sentence end there, shaking my head to show my meaning.
"All right." Miroku turned back to his car. "Call us if you change your mind. Kouga or I will come get you."
"Aight. Later." I waved him off and went back inside, only to be interrupted by another car. I heard two doors slam and hushed voices.
I walked back outside and saw the most beautiful girl I'd seen in my life. She had beautiful raven hair that sparkled in the sun; held in a high ponytail. She was wearing blue jersey shorts and a black tank top revealing a flat toned stomach as she stretched up toward the sky. She turned and I could see her face, the light bouncing off her dazzling eyes. She was gorgeous.
Of course, she was probably a complete bitch that I had no chance with. I sighed and stepped off the porch.
"Hey, you must be the new tenants. Sorry I don't know your names. Dad was a little vague on the details." I smiled as best I could despite the horrible mood I was in.
"Hello young Sir." the older woman - obviously the mother - walked up to me.
"Hey." the goddess spoke. Her voice soft and even, though her face looked annoyed.
"I am Inuyasha." I smirked - according to Kikyou I am cute when I smirk. "Follow me please."
