Chapter 9: Dinner Friday, Dancing Saturday and a whole lot of explainin'

~*~*~ Inus POV ~*~*~
Her light was still on. I wanted to go say 'hi' and ask her to the homecoming dance on Saturday. I thought maybe she would accept the offer for the simple fact that she had never been to our homecoming dance and would want a chance to go. I was running about twenty minutes late, a few more couldn't hurt. I went inside, my dad wasn't in the living room which meant he had gone to bed early. I counted my blessings. I ran back outside and picked up a few pebbles in the driveway, and ran over to Kagomes window. I gently tossed the pebbles, creating a small 'clanging' sound on the glass. I could have easily gone up to the window and knocked, but this seemed more romantic, and fun.
I waited for her to come to the window. When she didn't come I thought she might have been asleep and left the light on by mistake. I didn't want to go peek in the window because, what if she was changing? Then I'd be a peeping tom.
I saw her come to the window and I sighed, she held up a finger, singling for me to wait a minute. I smiled and nodded and she disappeared. She seemed to be on the phone so I waited.
~*~ Kaggies POV ~*~
"I miss you too daddy. Can I talk to him?" I asked, barely able to hold in my tears.
"~Hello~"
"Hey Souta." I smiled as I heard my little brothers voice for the first time in eight years.
"~Hey Kagome! I miss you!~" I began crying then.
"I miss you too buddy. How old are you now? Sixteen?" I was joking and he knew it. I always used to joke about his age with him.
"~No, I'm eleven silly!~" his reply came.
"Wow, you're getting so old." I exaggerated the word, "Did you get my birthday gifts?"
"~Yes I did! Thanks Kagome! I love the video game and thanks for the money too that was awfully sweet of you!~"
"Anything for my little brother." I heard a tapping on my window.
"~Daddy wants to talk to you again. Can we call you some other time?~"
"Please do Souta." I heard another tap on my window and I went to see what it was.
"~Kagome? I think we're loosing you so I'll have to make this quick.~" I looked out the window and saw Inuyasha smiling back at me. I think he was smiling, it was late.
"Yeah, you're getting all scratchy." I said. I held up a finger signaling I would be just a minute and he nodded.
"~I love you Kagome. We miss you terribly. When you get a chance come see us. You know where we are. Your mother doesn't have to know. I know, that sounds conspicuous but I need to see you Kagome. Souta does too. We haven't moved in nine years, hoping you would come back to us. So please . . . come back to us.~"
"I can't just leave mom. And, it's your fault you know." My voice held no conviction.
"~She never let me explain Kagome. We can get into that another time. Please, just come see us. I'll pay for gas, tolls, whatever it takes to get you here to see me.~"
"Okay daddy. I love you."
"~I love you too Kagome.~" I heard Soutas voice in the background echo my fathers words.
"Bye." I spoke softly and hung up the phone.
I sat on the bed, crying, holding the phone in my right hand and biting my thumb. I cried for a few minutes when I remembered Inuyasha was sitting outside, expecting me to come back to the window. I wiped away my tears, and tossed my phone on the bed and ran outside.
"Hey!" I said in a cheery voice.
"Hey, I was beginning to think you'd forgotten me." he joked.
"Nah." I smiled, "Come on in, it's freezing." we went into the house and I sat on the couch, waiting for him to do the same.
"Have you been crying?" he asked. I couldn't hide it in the light.
"Yeah." I said softly.
"Why? What happened?" he moved closer to me.
"It's no big deal." I shook my head and realized how close Inuyasha and I were.
"You can tell me." He said, looking into my eyes.
"I know, it's just that, it's really . . ." I couldn't speak. I tried but the words didn't come out. I just kept looking into Inuyashas deep eyes.
"Kagome?" he questioned, I was unable to respond except for a small 'hmm' sound. "Can I kiss you?" I nodded, not really knowing what I was doing.
Inuyasha placed his lips on mine. I was shocked by the action, then realized what I had agreed with in the first place. I accepted this kiss, leaning forward ever so hesitantly. My mind rushed with thoughts. Some rational, most impure. As his hand crossed my face lightly I thought about what his touch might feel like on other places along my body. I blushed at the naughty thoughts racing through my head. I then began to think of Kouga. I was beginning to grow fond of him. Inuyasha also seemed to be fond of Kikyou. Is what we were doing right? Of course, we were just kissing. It's not like we had gone any further. I felt his mouth leave mine and he scooted back on the couch.
"I am sorry." he replied. I was unable to formulate a response. "I shouldn't have done that. You're obviously distressed and that was . . . I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry Inuyasha. At least, not to me."
"What do you mean by that?" he looked puzzled.
"Well, Kikyou. Wouldn't she be upset? You two are back together right?" It was a simple question. Answered, with a simple word.
"No!" his face read horrible distaste, "What gave you that idea?"
"Well, you're always giving her rides home and, I don't know. People talk Yash."
"Feh. For your information I don't have to be going out with someone to be a nice guy. Are you dating Kouga? He's being awfully friendly. Why don't you just go to the jerks house now? Huh?"
"What makes you say he is a jerk?" I had a feeling there was a lot of built up anger Inuyasha was about to release on me.
"He makes fun of Sango all the time. He monopolizes women, not to mention manipulates them. He thinks he is so great because he lives in the 'rich' part of town in a six hundred thousand dollar house! He wears like two gallons of Ax and he's the most self-centered pig in the world. He's also very dangerous. He has the temper of an infant. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants at all times and . . . and . . . he just sucks!" Inuyasha had stood up somewhere around complaining about Kouga being rich. Now, as he stood next to the sofa, breathing slightly heavier than usual, I stood up as well.
"Then why are you his friend?" I asked, getting dangerously close to him.
"Because, he has his relatively good points." Inuyasha said in almost a whisper.
"Like what?"
"When I think of one, I'll let ya know." With that he turned and headed out the door. I didn't go after him. I didn't want to go after him.
~*~*~*~
Saturday was boring. On Sunday I went to the mall with Sango, we were determined to loose Miroku, but he is one stealth follower.
After finally getting away from him at Pac Sun we headed down to the coffee shop for a mudslide. We sat in front of Best Buy, watching people walking by, and talking about nothing in particular, when Miroku finally found us again.
"You two are very sneaky. But, I found you."
"Good job honey. Tell you what? Close your eyes, and we'll hide again. Why don't you count to . . . oh say, a million?" Sango laughed as Miroku took a seat next to her.
"If it is what my Sango wishes."
"I'm going to go throw up now." I commented, smiling at the pair.
"Shall I hold your hair my dear?" Sango extended her hand across the table.
"That would be most pleasant." I grabbed her hand and we began laughing.
It were the silly things that my friends and I did that made me the happiest I had been in a long time. I debated telling Sango about my encounter with Inuyasha the night before; but, with Miroku always around I didn't really have a chance.
Finally, around five, Sango, Miroku and I drove back to my house. I invited them in but Sango had to baby sit her little brother, and Miroku insisted on keeping her company. (No doubt with his wandering hands). I waved them off and went into the house. Mother wasn't home. I didn't know where she had gone, but she wasn't there. I grabbed my sketch pad from my room, and a few basic sketching items, and decided to walk to the bridge.
As I walked out of the driveway, I realized Inuyashas car was missing and so was his fathers. I walked down the dirt road and took a left at the end of the driveway. I walked passed the Monastery and passed the Inn. When I reached the bridge I was happy to see it wasn't quite high tide. I descended the rocks, making sure cars were not in sight, and settled myself under the rusted structure.
~*
The rain came down harshly. I had been at the bridge for a while. It had started to sprinkle, so I packed up my things, preparing to head home. Then it down poured.
I waited under the bridge for an hour or so, but it didn't lighten up. I had to get home. I put my sketch pad under my coat and braced myself against the rain.
I had only walked a block - do they call them blocks? - when I heard a car slowing down on the opposite side of the road. 'Just keep walking, keep walking'. I quickened my pace, knowing my house was only a few more minutes away.
"Hey!" 'Just walk.' "Hey Kags! This isn't LA Hon." at this I looked. I saw Kouga staring intently at me.
"Oh. Hey Kouga." I waved shyly, still squinting against the rain.
"Need a ride?" he was actually kind when he wanted to be.
"Nah, I'm okay. Thanks though." I don't know why I refused. Maybe it was what Yash said. Or, the kiss?
"Come on, it's not everyday I get to be a knight in shining metal." he was still smiling and winked at me.
I laughed out loud, how could I say no? "Okay." I ran across the street and into his car.
I was instantly warmed but that didn't stop my shivering.
"You'll catch your death."
"Thanks mom." I retorted sarcastically, he laughed lightly.
"You always carry around your school books?" he asked as I pulled out my sketchpad and pens.
"No, it's my sketch pad." I explained.
"Cool." he seemed distracted. "What did Yash say about me?" I was startled by the question.
"Nothing." I blurted. "Why?"
"I've never known anyone to turn down a ride in weather like this." He pointed out the window.
"Oh. I just didn't want to be an inconvenience." that was mostly the truth. But I wasn't sure if it was more.
"Oh. Well it's not. I have to drive by your street anyway."
"True." he turned onto my street and headed down the dirt driveway.
We pulled up to the main house and I smiled sweetly. "Thanks so much." I unbuckled and started to leave.
"So, you, me, dinner Friday at six thirty-ish." I looked at him quizzically.
"Huh?"
"Ya know, for the ride." he winked and I smirked, shaking my head.
"Aight, you win. See you tomorrow." I opened the door and as I stepped out I heard 'I can't wait'.
I smiled but as I walked in the house I quickly frowned. 'Yash'll kill me'.
*~* Inuyashas POV *~*
I made a resolution. I was going to ask Kagome to the Homecoming Dance. I knew she wouldn't go by herself, and I wanted to get her acquainted with life at KHS, even if it meant the more 'Preppy' parts. I paced in my room for the better part of two hours, wondering how to approach it. We had had a bit of a confrontation, so I felt slightly awkward; but, I finally decided I would just come right out and ask her. 'Hey Kags, so are you going to homecoming? I was thinking we could head up there together. It's just as easy for me to drive us both.' That way, it wouldn't really seem like a 'date' and she wouldn't be under any pressure to come up with a response. But, it did sound kind of mean saying 'It's just as easy for me to drive us both'. I mean, then it sounds like I am saying 'I guess you can bother me with your company'. I sat on the bed, exhausted from my two hours of musing. I would ask her in History tomorrow. I didn't want Kouga to get to her first - if he hadn't already. This was becoming more and more difficult.
~*~* Kaggies POV ~*~*~
His light was still on. I wanted to see if he wanted to go to Homecoming. I know I did. I didn't want to ask him though. Not only had we had a slight tiff but, I was 'going out' with Kouga on Friday, so asking another boy to the dance would be kind of . . . weird. I had never had this much drama in my life.
"I don't think I can handle this." I said out loud as I flopped face first onto my bed.
"Kagome? Are you still awake? It's nearly one in the morning. You have school tomorrow. I am not writing you an excuse."
"What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?" I was muttering into my pillow, oblivious to the fact that my mother was in my doorway trying to tell me my schedule.
"Kagome? Is something the matter?" I felt a slight pressure on my bed, and looked up from my pillow.
"No. I'm fine. It's fine." I smiled, and then mustered a yawn. "You're right though. I really should go to bed. I'll see you in the morning mom." I kissed my mothers cheek and climbed under the covers of my bed.
"Okay. But I am here if you need me."
"I know."
"Good Night Kagome."
"Night Mom."
I watched her walk out the door, and waited until I heard her footsteps go up the stairs before I got out of bed again. I walked to the window, one last time. His light was still on. I sighed, turning off my light and attempting to sleep.
~*~ Inuyashas POV ~*~
Her light went off.
~*
I woke up the next morning, hurrying through my morning routine. As I grabbed my bag and ran down the stairs I heard my Father tell me that my chores were to be done by seven that night. I waved him off and ran to the cottage.
I knocked gently, composing myself, trying to act normal.
"Hey Inuyasha." Kagome gave a half-hearted smile. I wondered if she was still mad about the other night.
"Hey Kagome. I was wondering if you had a ride to school."
"Yeah. Miroku and Sango offered to give me a ride so that I could spend time away from Kouga." she laughed slightly. "Why?"
"Oh, I just wanted to give you a ride, so we could talk. You know, about the other night and all." I did kind of want to talk about that, but I really just wanted to ask her to the dance before school.
"Well, we can talk after school, if you want to give me a ride home. I hope it's not too far out of your way." we laughed, me more so than her.
"I have a quick question."
"Yeah?"
"Will you-" a car horn honking interrupted my sentence and I turned to see Sango and Miroku pulling up.
"Hey Kaggie!" Sango smiled. Kagome disappeared briefly before fully emerging from the house with her backpack.
"Hey Sango! Miroku!" she waved happily.
"I am sorry, what were you saying Yash?"
"Not important." I smiled, shrugging it off.
"Oh, okay then. See you at school!" she waved cheerfully and jumped in the backseat of Miroku's car. I mentally beat myself up before getting into my own car and heading to school.
~*~ Kaggies POV ~~*
I was distracted by what Inuyasha could have possibly wanted earlier. I would simply have to ask him in History. First I had to get through the monstrous pop quiz that Ms. Carson assigned. 'This woman is trying to kill me'.
~*
"Yash! Hey. What did you want to talk about? It's been driving me insane." I smiled as we walked into the classroom. There were only three other kids in the classroom at the moment.
"Oh, well, I . . . " why is he stuttering so much? Do I have something embarrassing on me and he doesn't want to be rude? "I was just wondering, if you were going to the dance. The Homecoming Dance. Cause if you are, maybe we could go together." I smiled widely at his words. He asked me to Homecoming! "What I mean is, cause we live next to each other I can drive you or something." so he ruined the moment, I still couldn't contain my excitement.
"Sure I'd love to!" I quickly compensated for my overzealous attitude by saying, "I mean, whatever. Nothing better to do right?"
"Right."
I hadn't noticed that the other three kids had filed in and we were now ready to begin class. I sat in my usual seat and drifted through the rest of the class in pure bliss.
~*~*~*~ Friday Night
I was in my room getting ready for my dinner 'date' with Kouga. I didn't know where he was taking me, he refused to give me any hints, insisting it be a surprise. I decided that I would dress casual, but not too casual. Descriptive I know. My dress was a boring, black spaghetti strap, scoop neck, stopping mid thigh. I wore a pair of red and black star earrings, and a silver necklace with the Eye of Hours on it.
I nervously scrunched my hair, again. The curls were actually staying nicely with limited frizz, which I was grateful for.
"Kagome!" I heard my mother call, “Inuyasha's here to see you."
Inuyasha! What could he want? Why Now? Oh dear God!
"Coming" I replied sweetly.
I grabbed my purse - containing my cell phone and forty two dollars - and went into the living room.
"Hey Inuyasha, what can I do for you?" I asked, trying to look, and seem, normal.
"Hey Kagome. Wow." I blushed at his facial expression, as he looked me up and down. At least, that's what I think he was doing.
"Wow what?" I asked, trying to keep cool.
"Where are you going?" he asked.
"Out." I didn't want to tell him with who. I really wanted to go to Homecoming with him.
"Oh. I just wanted to have that conversation we've been putting off all week."
"Right. That conversation. I am sorry, can we do it later. I am being picked up at six thirty and I don't really have time to get into it." Now I was pushing him away . . . great.
"Right. Sure." he was upset. I could tell. "I'll talk to you later than." as he began to walk out the door he tossed over his shoulder "Have a good time on your date."
"It's not a date!" I defended. "It's a friend thing." I nearly whispered the last part.
"Not my business." he walked over the yard to his house and I heard the door close a little louder than was custom.
I felt horrible now. What was I going to do? This was the most complicated situation I had ever been in. I never really got close enough to people to be in such a predicament. I went into my room to ponder.
On the one hand, there was Kouga. Kouga was a nice guy when he wanted to be (especially to me). He went out of his way to be nice to me. On the other hand he was sometimes mean to everyone else. Then there was Inuyasha. Yash was so . . . Yash. He was strong-willed, energetic, smart, cute beyond belief. He wasn't usually mean to his friends, he sometimes had that air about him as though he were really pissed off. Then if he did get mad his eye did this cute thing where it would twitch.
"I guess there really is no contest." I said out loud. "Now I just have to find a way to tell Kouga that."
"Kagome. Kouga is here."
"Coming." I left the room and walked to the front door. Kouga sat in his car. Waiting. "Nice." I whispered in a clearly sarcastic tone. "Bye Mom. Love love." I closed the door behind me.
"Hi Kagome. You look great." Kouga called.
"Thanks." I smiled back. I stole a glance toward Inuyasha's bedroom window. He wasn't waiting there like I thought he would be. I sighed and got into Kouga's car.
~*
The night wasn't a complete disaster. It was semi-boring when Kouga began talking about himself for the first portion of the meal. The location however was gorgeous. It was a small Italian restaurant with a little stone patio dinning room (which is where we sat). The music was beautiful and there were couples dancing on the small dance floor. I enjoyed the scenery as Kouga talked about himself.
"Enough about me." He said, breaking my train of thought. "So Kagome, are ya goin' to Homecoming?"
'I could have sworn somebody had told him by now!' "Uh . . . yeah." I muttered, trying to change the subject. "This is gorgeous." I fiddled with my napkin under the table as I wreaked havoc on my lower lip.
"Do you want to go with me?" I knew it was coming, yet somehow I wasn't prepared.
"Actually, I'm going with a bunch of friends. It was a last minute thing. I don't even have a dress." 'Oh God now I'm lying.'
"Oh. Who?"
"Excuse me?"
"Who are you going with? Miroku is going with San, Matt with Camilla, David with Ness, Kik found someone named Naraku, Ship with Rin. So who are you going with?" 'Oh he knows!'
"Well . . ."
"May I refill your beverage Madame?" Thank the lord for waiters.
"Um, yes please." I smiled sweetly, silently thanking him for the diversion.
"Check too." Kouga added.
"Right away Sir." he left.
Kouga and I sat in an uncomfortable silence for the remainder of dinner. The check came and we didn't stay long after the bill was paid. I got into the passengers side of Kouga's car and he began the drive back to my house. I was thankful I had lived through the night. I couldn't wait to get home and tell Yash he was right. Kouga only talked and cared about himself.
"I can't believe you're listening to that . . . dick." Kouga said suddenly.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Inuyasha. I can't believe you're listening to him. What did he say about me? Did he say I monopolize and manipulate women, that I think I am so great because I am rich, that I wear too much Ax and that I am the most self-centered pig in the world. That I am also dangerous with the temper of an infant, and will stop at nothing to get what I want blah blah blah?"
"No. Not at all." Man he's good.
"It's not true. I respect women. I value their views and junk." I rolled my eyes.
As we pulled into the driveway I turned to look at him. "Well thank you for dinner. I had a lovely time."
"You're going to Homecoming with him aren't ya?"
I sighed heavily. "Yes."
"You'll be mine Kagome." before I knew what was happening Kouga's lips were on mine and he had me pushed against the door. I tried to push him off but he was much stronger than he looked. Finally I got him off me and he started the car back up. "You'll be mine." I got our of the car and watched him drive off in a hurry.
I looked up at Inuyasha's window (purely out of habit), and saw Inuyasha silhouetted in the light. "I really hope he didn't see that." I said to myself as I went inside for a hot bath and long awaited sleep.
~*~*~*~*~*~ Saturday - Homecoming
"Well it's all down hill after the dress Kagome." my mother said to me for, what seemed to be, the tenth time.
"Then why don't I know which shoes to wear?" I retorted. I wanted to look terrific! I wanted Inuyasha to know that last night wasn't anything special. I tried to do that with the dress. Rather than being a simplistic black dress I wore an elaborate pink dress. It was a soft pink with a Victorian style front. The dress flowed down passed my feet, and the shoes didn't really matter because no one would be able to see them anyway. I put make-up on this time. Soft pink eye shadow, and a relatively daring shade of mocha lip stick. I debated simply wearing lip gloss rather than a shaded lip stick but in the end the mocha won.
Once I was sure I couldn't fix anything else about my appearance I stood in my room. I didn't want to sit, for fear of wrinkles and other mishaps. I looked at my reflection a dozen times, waiting for Inuyasha to come to my door. I looked at my alarm clock and noted that it was seven thirty. The dance started at eight. I didn't know what time he was going to pick me up so I waited nervously. "What if he saw me last night, and now he's standing me up?" I asked myself out loud. I shook my head.
"Kagome" I heard my mother's voice.
"Yes?"
"Inuyasha's here for you." I smiled and released an exaggerated sigh. I didn't respond, I doubled checked the mirror (or by now would it be for the twelve hundredth time?), and walked out of my room.
I didn't really dare walk too much farther than the couch, after all I was still extremely nervous. I saw Inuyasha, standing there in his tux. He looked fabulous. It was an average, every day black tux, loose fitting, semi-casual; but, he made it look . . . amazing. I realized I had been gawking at him and I closed my mouth only to open it with a 'Hey'.
"Hey." he answered. "Wow." He was holding a small bouquet of tulips. I loved tulips. He was starring at me. I felt awkward under his gaze but I held my composure. He snapped back to reality suddenly, "These are for you." he extended the flowers to me and I smiled, accepting them.
"Thank you." I began walking away, "I just need to put them in water." I explained.
"Oh, I'll do that for you Kagome. You two just go on and have fun." Mother. I laughed.
"Thanks."
"But first," I knew what was coming. "Picture!" Yep.
Inuyasha and I stood side-by-side and my mother took a picture. "Oh come on kids, look like you like you each other." my mother reprimanded. I blushed quite dramatically, and Inuyasha gave off a nervous laugh.
"Put your arms around each other or something." Inuyasha continued to be nervous, as did I embarrassed. However, we managed to strike a pose fitting for my mother.
Inuyasha walked me to the car, opened my door for me, and then ran to his side to drive. I thought the night was going decently, mainly because it had just started. We listened to the stereo as we drove to the gymnasium. We didn't talk. It was weird that we didn't talk, but at the same time, it wasn't uncomfortable. We were listening to his mix CD which included Atreyu, Jack off Jill, Garbage, Def Lepard, Alexisonfire, and Taproot. I enjoyed it. Finally we arrived at the school. I stepped out of the car, once he shut it off of course.
"I would have gotten the door for you." he announced.
"Oh. Sorry. Thanks though." I smiled, closing the car door.
"Shall we then?" he extended his arm and I accepted.
"Why certainly." we walked arm-in-arm into the gym.
"Kagome! Oh my god you look gorgeous!" Sango ran up to me. She was wearing a lilac dress in a similar style to mine. It was a little lower cut though, and tighter to show off her wonderful curves.
"Thanks! You look amazing!" I returned the compliment. "Hey Miroku. Don't you look handsome." I smiled.
"Thank you Kagome dear." he kissed my hand and I giggled.
"Yash. Lookin' hot." Sango said.
"Thanks Song." he smiled with embarrassment.
"Come on Kags." Sango grabbed my hands and pulled me onto the dance floor. "This is our song." we began dancing to one of the songs that was popular over the summer.
The boys stood, semi-perplexed, as we became our own 'couple'. We danced through a few songs, and after being in the middle of a the crowd for so long, we went to get some water. A slow song came on and Sango was taken away by Miroku. I couldn't find Inuyasha. The cynic in me immediately jumped to the conclusion that he was off with Kikyou. I shook my head and silently berated myself for being so foolish. I watched the couples dancing, and suddenly felt very out of place. Inuyasha and I were only there as friends, after all. I sighed, quite overly dramatic, as the song ended. I then spotted Inuyasha across the room. He seemed to be watching me, but I wasn't sure. Then I was positive I was being a nutcase. He gave me the 'signal' to come over to him, so I did, nonchalantly of course.
I smiled at him, nervously, and waited for him to say something. I shouldn't have been so nervous, under any other circumstances I would feel more comfortable with Inuyasha than anybody else. But, being with him, on an unofficial date, at my first KHS dance, I felt weird. A Tango was playing and he motioned to the dance floor. I knew what he was suggesting without him suggesting. I just so happened to be a wonderful Tango-er. Well, I may be exaggerating, but I was good. I accepted his offer and we went out onto the dance floor. I half expected the floor to clear, like in a cheesy eighties movie, when only the 'main' couple is left on the dance floor, showing off their moves. This didn't happen. We just . . . danced. Together. It was a short three minutes of happiness, but it was happiness.
The next song was not as slow, but people danced in a slow motion to it. It was 'Caught Fire' by The Used. Inuyasha and I mimicked those others who were dancing slowly. I was surprised by the different genres of music they were playing. Usually at school functions they only played modern R&B and Hip-hop.
~*Seemed to stop my breath
my head on your chest
waiting to cave in
from the bottom of my
hear your voice again
could we dim the sun
and wonder where we've been
maybe you and me
so kiss me like you did
my heart stopped beating
such a softer sin*~
I rested my head on Inuyasha's shoulder, finally feeling the nausea leave me. I almost closed my eyes as I got lost in the song, and the calm motion of our dance steps. I wanted to talk about our kiss. It was a subject to not bring up at a social function, but I really wanted to know if it was going anywhere. One part of me didn't want to get too involved with him, in case mother decided to up and leave again. But a lot more of me wanted a real relationship for once with a nice, fun and cute boy.
~*~ Inu's POV ~*~
I never wanted to let go. Not only was Kagome a magnificent dancer, but I wanted a reason to hold her. I never wanted to let her go. I was so afraid that if I did, she would never come back to me. My self confidence left a lot to be desired, and I couldn't take any chances in loosing her to somebody else. It was time to talk about that kiss, and see if she wanted more, or if friendship was all she could handle.
~*I'm melting
I'm melting
In your eyes
I lost my place
could stay a while
and I'm melting in your eyes
like my first time
that I caught fire

"Kagome . . . " I began quietly.
"Mmm?" she responded, not lifting her head from my shoulder. I was relieved she felt so comfortable with me.
"That night . . . when I kissed you." she looked up at me then. I had a feeling that I had crossed the line between 'a nice evening' and 'worst night of my life'.
"Yeah." her voice was slow, and pronounced.
"I don't know how it made you feel; you don't have to tell me. I just . . . " I never pulled away from her, we continued moving about the floor in an awkward pattern, avoiding couples continuing with their night, uninterrupted by us. "I just, I guess I want to know if, it made you feel anything? Between us?" I started blushing I am pretty sure. My face was all hot and I was tempted to crawl into a dark whole and die. I had never been so nervous around a girl in my entire life. "Never mind. I am sorry I brought it up."
"Don't be sorry Yash."
~* Never caught my breath
every second I'm without you I'm a mess
ever know each other
trust these words are stones
why cuts aren't healing
learning how to love
I'm melting
I'm melting *~
"Yash. When I moved here, I was scared and alone. You made me feel welcomed and unafraid. You were instantly my friend, and over the summer, you became my best friend. I have a tendency to distance myself around people, because I move so much and I get nervous that I'll be hurt, or they will be. But Yash, I'm not nervous around you, well, except tonight. I like you Yash. The other night, when you kissed me . . . I didn't want you to stop." I could see her blushing, and I sensed a blush myself. "I went out with Kouga yesterday because he gave me a ride home cause it was raining, and I 'owed' him. So he suggested dinner. I had a lousy time, and I should have told you. I'm sorry. But I . . . I do like you." I felt the world rise from my shoulders and disappear. I smiled at her, and couldn't stop myself from replaying the very situation which we were speaking of.
I felt my lips gently link with hers as I pulled her closer to me.
~*in your eyes
I lost my place
could stay a while
and I'm melting in your eyes
like my first time
that I caught fire
just stay with me
lay with me now
you can stay and watch me fall
and of course I'll ask for help
we could take our heads off
stay in bed and just make love
that's all
just stay with me now*~
As the song ended, I reluctantly pulled apart from Kagome. She was smiling, and I followed her actions. We walked hand - in - hand to Sango and Miroku.
"Well, it is about time!" Sango exclaimed.
"Yeah, really. We were about to start a pool." Miroku agreed.
"Wait," Kagome held her hand up, "You guys knew we liked each other?"
"Uh, yeah. Everyone knew." Sango was smiling.
"Thanks." Kagome said in a sarcastic tone.
"No probs." Sango replied. "Well since, you two are hooked up, lets you and I dance Kags."
"Okay." she let got of my hand and took Sango's instead. "Bye guys."
I watched her dance with Sango, and I couldn't have been happier. "I know that look." Miroku spoke up.
"What look?" I faked idiocy.
"Oh come on. That ‘eyes glazed, distant, dopey grin’ look. I've got it too my friend. And they happen to be dancing with each other eh?"
"Shut up." I tried to cover my blush, but it didn't work. Instead I gave up and Miroku and I stared at the girls.
~* Kag's POV ~*
As I danced with Sango, for the second time that night, I couldn't help feeling happier than I had ever felt before. I had finally admitted all my feelings to a boy, and he returned those feelings. The night carried on, and the best part was neither Kouga nor Kikyou seemed to be around. With that happy thought the night was even more wonderful.
Unfortunately it ended all to soon. We all said our good byes in the parking lot.
"Well Kagome, it was lovely dancing with you. Have a wonderful weekend." Sango and I hugged.
"You too Hun. Oh, and Miroku, happy birthday. I won't get to talk to you because I know you'll be so busy this weekend, so know that I love you and wish you all the happiness on your seventeenth." I smiled at him.
"Thanks Kags. I do appreciate the warm thoughts." he smiled as well.
"Yeah I have some, surprises for him." Sango winked at me and we started laughing. Apparently the boys missed the side comment.
"Happy birthday man. I'll see ya Monday." Yash said to Miroku, doing their 'secret handshake' (which we all knew).
"Thanks Yash." Sango and Miroku walked off toward Miroku's car.
"BYE!" They called in unison.
"BYE!" we hollered back and waved.
Inuyasha opened the door for me, "Thank you." I got in and waited for him to do the same. It was becoming very cold (even with Inuyasha's coat around my shoulders) and I wanted to turn the heat on.
"It's cold out here." Inuyasha announced.
"You read my mind."
The car ride back was filled with random chatter. There was nothing really important said, just simple day - to - day things. We pulled into the driveway and I didn't want to go inside. I wanted to stay with Inuyasha. I wanted to talk with him, and be with him. I noticed my moms car wasn't in the yard.
"I wonder where our parents are." Inuyasha said, looking at the lack of cars in the driveway.
"I don't know." I shrugged, not thinking much of it.
"I'm going to open your door for you, don't get out." He smiled and got out of the car, running to the other side. He opened the door and I accepted his hand in getting out.
"Shall I walk you to your door?" I laughed at his question.
"That would be most gentlemanly." I accepted his hand and we walked the short distance to my 'house'.
"Well," he started, putting his hand on the door frame in true date style. "I had a great time tonight." his tone was clearly trying to be over dramatic and somewhat on the 'dorky' side.
"Yeah, I did too." I caught his smile and added, "Like totally." we shared a laugh and he moved his hand off the door frame to my shoulder. The soft contact caused me to shiver involuntarily.
"You're freezing." he announced.
"Yeah, it's kind of nippy out here." I smiled, feeling myself getting nervous again. I wanted to kiss him, so badly did I want to kiss him. I also wanted to invite him in, but that would be much too fast and so unlike me.
"Maybe you should get inside," he kissed me then. I responded to the kiss, wrapping my arms gently around his neck, pulling him closer to me. He moved his hands to my waist, holding me close to him. I titled my head, angling just right for better access. He deepened the kiss and I felt my hands roaming through his hair. Unfortunately, being mortals, the need to breathe got the better of us, and we pulled apart. I leaned against the door, catching my breath.
"Would you like to come in?" I blurted out the sentence, not being able to stop myself.
"Yeah, I would."

End of chapter 9. Bam! Nine chapters in the bank. Boo yeah
Oh by the way, I don't own Inu, never will. Sad to say ne? The song was obvious The Used and "I Caught Fire" in case you didn't get it when Kagome said it. ^_^ and just to give them credit.

Chapter 9: Dinner Friday, Dancing Saturday and a whole lot of explainin'
January 2005
Anubis_himura

"Kagome . .
