Chapter 14 : Let's take a ride

~*~*~ Kags ~*~*~
I didn't do anything elaborate for Inuyasha's birthday, because he didn't want me to. So, I got him a fifty dollar gift certificate to the mall, and a card. We hung out and everything was dandy.
I had been talking to my dad and my brother a lot lately. Ever since Inuyasha's 'mishap'. He kept telling me to come down and visit him. I told him I'd try. The more I thought about it though, the more tempting it was. Why not just take my vacation and go? My mother was becoming insane. She was completely bipolar. One minute she would be angry with me and the next she would be her normal sweet self. I suspected it was from being around Tai so often, but I really had no right to say.
Inuyasha was equally depressed and confused. The snow limited most of our options, since I sucked at driving in it and he couldn't drive at all. Apparently his dad had been even more of an authoritative parent. He even tried to make Inuyasha snow blow the driveway. I ended up doing it for him, before he even got a chance to get on his boots.
It just seemed like such a great idea, to pack up some clothes, and some entertainment, and just drive. I had about three hundred dollars stashed up, and could make it there and back no problem. Just drive. That's what I wanted to do during vacation. I didn't want to, nor dare to, leave Inuyasha alone though. That was the only thing stopping me.
~* *time lapse!* *~
It was officially vacation. It was December 23rd, and Friday would be Christmas. I would wait until then before I allowed my 'master plan', to unfold.
"So Kags, what are we doing for vacation?" Inuyasha asked as he leaned back on the headboard.
"I don't know." I smiled at him, “Sango said we should all hang out or something. I don‘t know. What do you want to do?"
"I want to go snowboarding, but that's not gonna happen."
"No, I guess not." I kicked off my shoes, and laid down on the bed, my head resting close to Inuyasha's chest.
Inuyasha was getting much better. I was surprised how well he healed. The doctor said he would be on crutches for six weeks, putting him into early January; but, he was already starting to walk around without them.
"Kags?" he asked, snapping his fingers in front of my face.
"What?" I said back, looking up at him with a confused expression.
"I said, why don't we have a New Years Party? We can have everyone come over and just kind of hang out; maybe rent some movies to watch, get pizza."
"That would be cool. Except," I thought for a second. "Well, I don't know if our parents would go for that. I mean, my mom is being a little magoo lately, and we all know how Tai is."
"True." Inuyasha laid back on the bed, putting his left arm behind his head as a pillow. "Damn. What are we going to do?"
I sat up, supporting myself on my right arm and turned Inuyasha's face toward mine. "Lets make out." I leaned over him, smiling, as he smirked back at me.
"Okay."
~
My mother had invited Tai and Inuyasha for Christmas dinner, and I was glad they accepted. Inuyasha could eat again; which was good because he was loosing weight from eating nothing but yogurt for so long, and he didn't need to be loosing weight.
I helped my mother prepare the dinner, and at five thirty Inuyasha and Tai came over. We all sat around the table, talking, eating, laughing. It was actually a fairly nice picture. After the dishes were cleared and soaking, we all went to the family room for coffee and tea. We continued our conversations and watched the snow falling outside. I looked at my mother, who smiled back.
"You and Inuyasha may be excused." she said.
"Thanks." we got up and went into my room. I put on a CD and we sat on my bed.
"Yash," I said, not knowing if I really wanted to go through with my 'master plan' or not.
"Yeah?"
"Ever been to Georgia?" I asked.
"No. Why, what's in Georgia for you?"
"My dad, and my brother." I said.
"Cool. My brother's there too. That's weird."
"You have a brother?" I asked, completely forgetting why I had brought up the subject in the first place.
"Yeah. Didn't I tell you?" he shrugged. "His name is Sesshomaru, he's . . . " he shook his head, "God, probably twenty three now. Don't know, I haven't seen him since he was sixteen."
"Why?"
"He left when Mom died. He hates Tai, so he left. He said he'd come back for me, but he never did. That's okay though, I ain't mad."
"I'm sorry." I didn't know what else to say. Then I remembered why the conversation started in the first place. "So you wanna go?"
"Go where?" he seemed confused.
"Georgia." I stated simply. "We can leave tonight, no one will know, by the time they realize we're gone, we'll be half way to New York."
"That's crazy Kags."
"I know." I smiled, daring him to come with me. "Come on, lets take a ride."
"Kags, your mom will be pissed her car is missing." Inuyasha was trying to convince me to stay. It wasn't going to work.
"Then we'll take yours."
"You can't drive it, neither can I." he noted, still trying to be the voice of reason.
"I'll learn! Come on Yash." I pouted at him, "I'm going, with or without you. But I'd really like you to be there with me."
I saw him processing this, thinking about my proposition. Stay with his father all vacation, without a source of sanity (me). Or, go with me on a road trip and not have to see his dad for a week. Then the other side came around. We would have to go back someday. Then his dad would get to him; and my mom would get me too.
"Let's do it." he said.
"Really?" I looked at him in shock.
"Yeah. Let's go."
I smiled like an idiot as I hugged him with tremendous force. I nearly knocked him off the bed. "Okay." I said, still smiling, "We're going to go pack some clothes for you, toss them out the window, I'll catch them and throw them in the car. Then, we'll hang out in my room until your dad goes back to your house. We'll get you to stay a little longer, then we'll sneak out through the window. Well, actually, you can go out the front door. We'll push the car, okay I'll push the car out the driveway and we'll start it down the road. Then it's smooth sailing."
"You've thought about this a lot haven't you?" He asked.
"A little."
"Are you sure this will work?" his skepticism was crazy.
"Trust me."

It was time to go. We had followed through with the first section of the plan. Inuyasha had packed clothes, tossed them out his window, and I threw them into the car before anybody knew we were gone. Inuyasha and I went back in the house, and asked if Inuyasha could stay a while longer. Our parents agreed, miraculously, so we went into my room.
It got on to about two in the morning before Tai got ready to go.
"Inuyasha, it's time to go home." he said from the other side of the door.
"Time for a little white lie." I whispered to Inuyasha.
I went to my door and opened it a crack. "Tai, sir, Inuyasha fell asleep. It would be a shame to wake him and make him walk all the way up stairs. You know how hard it is for him. I can sleep on the couch and he can stay the night." I smiled sweetly. My mother was there too.
"That's fine Kagome. Tai." she gave him a look and he nodded.
"Fine."
"Thank you Sir." I continued looking cute and innocent.
"Yeah."
Tai left and I watched him walk into the house. Inuyasha looked out the window with me. "Once the light goes off, I'd give it about an hour." he said.
"Yeah, once mom says 'goodnight' it'll be about an hour, hour and a half." I looked away from the window.
We sat on my bed talking, mostly, until three thirty, then we looked out the window again. The light was off. We gave it until four in the morning.
I opened my bedroom door, and scooted Inuyasha through it. He walked as fast as he could, to the car, gently closing the door once he was in. I went back to my room and picked up my duffle. I grabbed my purse and looked around to make sure we had everything. We did. I closed and locked my door and went out the front, as Inuyasha had, locking the door again.
I put my duffle in the car next to Inuyasha. I then pushed it backward out the driveway. It was a good thing there was a slight incline to the driveway. I pushed it until we were well out of ear shot of the houses. I jumped in and looked at the car.
"Push the clutch in." Inuyasha said.
I smiled, "I knew that." I looked at the pedals. "Which one is the clutch?" I asked.
"Maybe I should drive." he laughed. "The one closest to the door."
"Okay," I said, pushing in the clutch.
"As far as it will go." he clarified.
"'kay."
"Then the break. The one in the middle."
"Well I figured that." I put my foot on the break.
"Okay, put the key in and start the car."
"Right." I did as he instructed. "Why is it making that weird sound?" I asked.
"Oh, it's old. Give it some gas." I pushed on the gas pedal and the car started.
"Woo!" I smiled, putting my foot on the break to keep from rolling "Okay, now what?"
He scratched his head slightly, as though saying 'I should drive'. "Keep the clutch pushed down, and take the shifter, all the way to your left, and up."
I did as he said and waited for further instruction. "Okay, now, turn on the lights. Then I want you to gently apply pressure to the gas pedal while slowly releasing pressure from the clutch."
"Say what?" I asked. I got what he was saying, but how to do it was another story. "Okay, I can do this."
"You can do this Kags. Concentrate." I took a deep breath and put my foot on the gas, slowly applying pressure while releasing the clutch. The car stalled.
"Why did it do that?" I asked.
"Because, you took your foot of the clutch too fast." he explained. "Now, start the car, and try again."
We tried five times before I could finally go without stalling. I stayed in first gear, not daring to shift.
"Okay, I don't have an RPM gage, so your going to have to feel what the car wants." he said.
"What the hell does that mean?"
"It means, when you hear the engine making that sound," he pointed to the hood, "You should shift."
"How do I do that?"
"Push the clutch back in, and put the shifter into second. To your left and down."
"'kay." I did as he said and the engine noise died down, slightly.
"Take your foot off the clutch."
"Oh, Opps." I took it off.
"Also, your foot doesn't need to be on the gas when you shift, and you can coast for a second before putting it back on. If you want."
"Umm, sure."
We were half way to Mass before I even remotely got the hang of a standard. I stalled five times at various intersections, red lights and stop signs. Luckily not many people were on the road at this time a day.
Once we were on the turnpike though, I stayed in fifth and it was pretty easy. I didn't have to worry about shifting or the clutch at all, unless I needed to slow down.
I leaned back as Inuyasha turned up the radio to an audible volume. "Here we go then?"
"Here we go."
