~*~*~ The Kagsters POV *~*~*~
"Thanks Yash." I said, pulling into the drive way and turning the car off.
"No problem Kags. I couldn't let him say that about you." I smiled. As much as I wanted to be angry at Yash, I just couldn't. It was near impossible. "And thank you."
"For what?" I asked, looking puzzled.
"For saying I was your boyfriend." I saw him smile slightly.
"Well . . ." I emphasized, playing for time, "What was I suppose to say in that situation?" I asked, playing at him.
"You could have let him beat me."
"I should have let him beat you." I corrected, still smiling.
"Should have then." he said.
I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "Don't agree with me."
"You're right. I shouldn't agree with you." I hit him playfully on the arm; getting out of the car.
"You're horrible." I declared.
"Night Kagome." he said in an 'I won' tone.
"Night Yash." I said back, mimicking his tone.
~*~ Four Months, and a few weeks, Later ~*~
- It seemed like just a few days ago we had to take our Semester Finals, (of course, I haven't written since early March), now we're taking Final Finals! Well not now, but they're prepping us for them. It's only May 24th, but Damned if they aren't freaking us out already! Grr! Oh, and as I know (since I'm the only one who reads this) my Birthday is tomorrow. I don't think anyone knows though. I hope not. Anyway, Happy Birthday to me! *smile* Sango's Birthday was May 8th. Miroku did something extra special for her. Or so I'm told. As I wrote last time, Yash is off his crutches and meds and everything. His dad has been pretty much leaving him alone too, which is great! Dad and Souta call all the time. Mom even talked to Dad once. I hope she likes Kaydee. I don't mind her. Anyway, what else has been going on? Souta won nationals! I was so proud of him. Miroku and Sango are as close as ever. Kikyou is still fighting the fact that she is deeply in love with Inuyasha. Everyone knows. Kouga and her are dating though. I think they are together as more of a means to have a boyfriend/girlfriend. Anyway, since when have I been one for gossip? *wink* I am putting off studying. Honors, Chem. and Shakespeare in the same day. Blech! I hate finals! I don't have to come in for my Gym Final though. It is going to be a take home project on nutrition. So I have a free block to study. Or go to Dunkin' Donuts and chill with Yash Kouga and Kikyou. (weirdly enough we all got Gym together. Kind of. Kouga had Raf.) Blah. I have to study. My first final is Honors English. It should be okay. Not too horrible. Of course than I have Algebra Honors. I'm gonna die. Exaggerate much? Anyway, in fifty years this won't matter, so why am I writing it? Then again, why does anyone keep a diary? I mean, really, does it matter what went on in your day - to - day life? Then again, it's a good way to reflect and learn, and grow as a person. -
"Kags?" I heard a knock on the window and saw Yash. I smiled and waved.
- Thank God. Yash is here, so I'll write later. I'm so glad he interrupted me, I was beginning to sound like Mr. Rogers or something. *smile* Peace! -
"Hey Kags." Yash said as he climbed through the window.
"You can use the front door you know." I said, putting my diary back in the side drawer.
"Where's your sense of fun?" he asked, his eyes widening in mock amusement.
"It flew out the window as soon as they started talking about finals." I said, making room for him on the bed.
"What's in the bag?" I asked, motioning the paper bag in his hand.
"Well," he began, reaching into the bag, "Since we have school tomorrow," he said, pulling out two champagne glasses. "And I won't be able to see you afterward, thanks to the jerk I call a boss," he pulled out a bottle that looked oddly like champagne. "I thought we could celebrate tonight." He tossed the paper bag off the bed.
"Celebrate what? Exactly?" I asked. I didn't recall ever telling him it was my birthday.
He kissed my cheek, "Happy Birthday."
I smiled despite my self. "Who told?" I asked.
"Sango." he smiled, opening the bottle.
"I'll kill her."
"But first, we celebrate." I looked at him suspiciously.
"I don't dr-" I was about to say 'drink' before he cut me off.
"Drink. I know. It's sparkling cider." I laughed.
"You're cute." I said, holding the glasses for him to fill.
He smiled, putting down the cider and raising his glass. "To a wonderful, charming, sweet, sensitive, fun, and extremely sexy girlfriend. Happy seventeenth birthday."
My glass clanked feebly with his and I couldn't stop smiling like an idiot.
"Drink up." He said, swallowing his in one go.
I drank the cider and held my glass in my lap. "Thank you." I said earnestly.
"Ah, it's not much. I just wanted you to know, that even though you didn't tell me when your birthday was, I have my sources. And I care about you. I'm glad you were born Kagome. You've made this passed year, amazing. Exciting. Enjoyable. Entrancing. Exhilarating. Mesmerizing. Miraculous." he paused, "I don't know anymore big words." I giggled at this. He smiled down to me, wiping a stray tear from my eye. I hadn't realized they were falling.
"Thank you Inuyasha."
"I love you Kagome." I felt his lips collide softly with mine and I felt like I could die.
~*~
The next morning I woke up. Knowing I was late. I didn't hear my alarm go off, and I was sure Yash wasn't knocking on my door furiously trying to wake me up. But I just knew, I was late. I opened my eyes immediately and looked at my clock. It was only seven. I had time. I yawned and stretched. I felt sore. But I had had the best dream the night before. I looked at the floor, where a bottle of cider and two glasses had been discarded. I felt myself frown slightly in confusion.
"It was a dream. Wasn't it?" I asked myself, pulling on my jeans and a tank top. It was only May but it was hot outside already. It was going to be a great summer.
I grabbed my pullover from my desk, shaking my head as I left my room. I heard the shower on, but ignored it, grabbing a granola bar.
"See you later Mom!" I called. "You're late by the way!" I smiled and opened the front door. My mother's car was gone. I turned around, leaving the door open, and walked to the bathroom.
The shower was definitely running. "Mom must have left it on. Scatter brain." I shook my head, opening the door.
The steam nearly suffocated me. I could barely see my hand in front of my face. I pulled open the shower curtain and turned the knobs. Coughing slightly. I blinked and looked on the floor where there were clothes strewn about. My eyes widened. They were Inuyasha's clothes. I turned and screamed on instinct.
"I am so sorry!" I closed my eyes and turned away from the shower.
"It's okay, I was done anyway." he said.
"No. I mean, oh my god. I'm sorry. I didn't know, you were in here." I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment, but I kept my face well hidden.
"It's okay Kags." I could hear him chuckling. "I locked myself out of my house."
"No need to explain. Sorry." I said again, still covering my face.
"Wanna pass me a towel?" he asked, the laughter still evident in his voice.
"Sure." I went to the towel cupboard, and opened one eye, partially, to find a towel. I grabbed one and walked sideways to him, my eyes still closed. "Here. I'll be downstairs." I said, leaving the bathroom.
I collapsed on the couch. Putting my head in my hands. It wasn't so much an embarrassing situation, well it was, but especially after the dream I had had the night before. Yash had come over to wish me a happy birthday, and then . . . My face lit into a girlish smile and I shook my head. "We didn't." I muttered.
"We did." I heard Yash say from behind me. I didn't look up from the floor. "Don't worry I'm dressed." he said.
"Sorry." I said again, looking up at him. "I just . . . I didn't know."
"It's okay Kags." I could see a little sadness in his eyes.
"I'm sorry Yash. I didn't mean to be so creped out. I just, have girly notions of propriety and I don't know." I smiled. "I thought it was all a dream. When I woke up, I was in my room, in my pj's, just like any other day. I wasn't sure if something so perfect, was real." I kissed his cheek. "Thank you. For the best, and most unforgettable, birthday ever."
He gave me a dashing smile and said "You're welcome." then he smirked. "You know, we can relive the magic." he winked.
"Pig." I said, hitting him playfully on the arm. "We're late. We should go." I stood up, still chuckling to myself.
"Well perhaps we should." he held out his hands, asking me to help him off the couch. I rolled my eyes and pulled him up. "By the way," he wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head. "Happy Birthday beautiful."
~*
"Hey Kagome," Sango said from behind me. I turned around.
"Hey." she was holding a purple bag.
"Happy Birthday." she said holding it out to me.
I smiled, "Thank you." I accepted the bag as we walked to our table. "Oh, and thanks for telling everyone." I said in a playfully angry tone.
"Well, you sure weren't going to." she retorted.
"Yeah, that was the idea. I got to school and Kouga nearly mauled me with his hug, saying happy birthday. Then Kikyou was casual about it, around twenty other people! And Miroku -"
"He did it?" Sango asked excitedly.
"Oh yeah I did." he sat down next to Sango.
"Man I wish I had seen it."
"Big ol' banner, right across the overpass." Miroku explained, as though we didn't know what we were talking about.
"I can't believe you did that." I said, smiling.
"Well . . . "
"Hey guys." Yash sat down next to me, smiling.
"Hey." they said in unison.
"So, I gave you a present, nearly in secret, Kikyou told twenty people, Kouga mauled you, Miroku told the school, what did Yash do?" Sango asked, looking inquisitively at Yash.
"I wished her a happy birthday this morning." he said calmly, taking a drink of his Gatorade.
"That was it?" Miroku asked shaking his head. "My friend, you must learn to properly, both appreciate, and love the women."
"Woman." Sango corrected.
"That's what I said." he smiled daringly.
"Pig." she shook her head.
"So really Kags," Sango turned back to me, "What happened?"
"He told it like it is." I shrugged, trying not to give myself away.
"Uh huh. We're gonna talk later." she said, with a look that clearly stated she would get the whole truth.
"Hey guys." Kikyou and Kouga came over together.
"Hey." we said back collectively.
"So, who took down the banner?" Kouga asked.
"Mr. Mitch." Miroku said, looking around as though expecting Mr. Mitch to pop up and start giving suspensions.
"Dang. That was a cool idea."
"I know." Miroku said, laughing slightly.
"You guys rock." I said, trying not to sound like an over-emotional dork.
"We know." they said in unison.
I laughed, shaking my head.
"Back to class!"
~*Final Finals!
I was almost done with finals. It was eight o'clock in the morning and I was in Honors Chem. One of the hardest finals I had prepared for. After this I was done. Well, I had Shakespeare, but I could sail through that. This was it. Pass or fail. I let out a heavy sigh as I read question three. Oh yeah, we had been here for fifteen minutes and I was barely through the first half of the first page. There were twelve pages, only three multiple choice questions. I looked at the question again. 'What do carbon chains have to do with this?' I asked myself. I skipped the question for the time being and moved on to the next one (an easy question about the periodic table and transition elements).
The time dragged on. One minute after another, after another, after another! It was so mundane. And every question was like the one before. Wordy and pedantic. I kept looking over at Yash. He seemed really wrapped up in his Final. I wanted to catch his eye, as though to say 'doesn't this suck?'. But he didn't really look over at me. If he did, it was when I wasn't looking at him. Kikyou didn't even seem to be caring, she was writing down answers and then staring off to space, while her pen still floated gracefully along the pages. Holly looked like she was going to kill someone. She had her nose practically touching the paper and she was writing furiously while typing away on her calculator.
"Ten minutes left!" Mr. Brick announced. I had been dazing into space. I looked back down to my paper. I was only one question sixty five out of seventy. I panicked. I began writing quickly, using which ever method I could to solve the problems and not caring to double check my work.
The ear piercing bell sounded just as I had scribbled my final calculation. Mr. Brick collected the Finals immediately and dismissed us. I sighed heavily and got up, waiting for Yash in the hall.
"That was intense." he said as he came out.
"Heck yes." I said, sounding too much like Napoleon Dynamite* for my liking.
"Ahh, twenty minutes of freedom before eighth huh?" he asked rhetorically.
"Thank God. I'm done." I said as we walked out side to the large pine tree in the front of the school.
"Bite me, I still have Latin." he said sitting down in the shade.
"That does suck." I agreed, sitting next to him. "Where did Kikyou go?" I asked, thinking she would be right behind us.
"Oh, she went the other way when we left Chem. I think she was jealous." He said, not seeming to care.
"Oh." I realized we were holding hands, and had been since we left the exam. She probably saw and chose not to come out with us.
I wasn't sure how I felt on the subject. She was obviously infatuated with Yash; and I don't like to sound like a self-absorbed person but, I was pretty sure that Kouga liked me. It just made me feel awkward around them.
"Kags?" Yash said, snapping his fingers.
"Hey!" I snapped back from my thoughts.
"It's Song and Ku." he said, pointing to Miroku's Durango.
We walked over to them. They were apparently about to leave school. "Hey," they said.
"Hey."
"We're going to D and D**. Want something?" Miroku asked.
"Oh, dude, can you get me a Mocha Cool?" I asked, digging in my jeans for money.
"No probs hun." Sango said, taking my money. "Whip cream on that?"
"You got it."
"Yeah I'll take a large coffee." Yash said, getting out his own money.
"Five sugars and three creams?" Miroku said.
"You know me too well darlin'." Yash winked to Miroku who laughed and handed the money to Sango.
"If we're not back in ten minutes, just wait longer."
"You better be back in ten minutes." Yash joked.
"Whatever." Miroku put the car into gear and reved the engine. "See ya."
"They're going to get caught." I said as we walked back to our tree.
"What's Mr. Mitch gonna do? Suspend 'em?"
"Well, no, but he could stop them from taking their last final, and then they'd fail."
"Dude, don't they have Quire? That'll be so pimp. They can stroll in like ten minutes before the final ends and she wouldn't notice."
"Good point." I said. He nodded, thinking the conversation was over. "But I can't stroll in to Shakespeare late, and you can't be late for Latin. And, if that's not enough, Mr. Mitch can still stop them from taking it. So they really shouldn't have left." I said, sounding much too like Hermione from Harry Potter***.
"You know you're going to get a Coolatta, what do you care?" he said, smiling as he lay down on the grass.
"True." I leaned against the tree trunk. I could have fallen asleep if it weren't for the sound of the bell going off.
"Damn. They're not back yet." Yash said, looking at his watch.
"Told you." I said. "If they get caught . . ."
"Did the bell ring?" Sango asked, leaning out the window of the Durango.
"Yeah, just now. We have like ten minutes." Yash said walking up to the car.
"Shit." Miroku said. "'Kay, Sango, I'm gonna go park, can you bring my coffee in?"
"Sure." Sango got out of the car. "Here's a cool for you Hun, and a coffee for Yash." she said. "Okay, I'll be in English. Unfortunately." she added the second statement under her breath.
"Kay, I'll be right there." Miroku said, peeling off toward the student parking lot.
"We better go Kags." Sango said, knowing we had to go the same direction.
"Yeah, I have to go to the portables. I'll see you later." Inuyasha said.
"Good luck." I smiled and he kissed me on the cheek.
"You too." he released my hand. "Bye guys!"
"That is just too cute for words." Sango said as we began sprinting to our classes.
"Shut up. Like you and Miroku aren't the sickestly happy people in the world!" I rolled my eyes.
"Sickestly?"
"Shut up!" I repeated, my voice rising a few octaves.
"Ladies," Mr. Mitch looked at the cups in our hands and gave us a knowing look. I thought for sure he was going to tell us to just go home. "Better hurry, or you'll be late." he smiled and winked before turning the corner.
I let out a heavy sigh and looked at Sango who was smiling evilly. "Well dear, good luck on your final. I'm going to go die now." she smiled as she turned into Ms. Quire's room.
"Good luck Song." I said, continuing down the hallway.
~**~
"I think Kikyou cheated off me." Inuyasha said as we walked to the car.
"I did not!" Kikyou said hotly.
"Well, then how come every time I erased, or paused, so did you?" he asked in a semi-joking tone.
"Well, it's not my fault we happen to have the same thought patterns."
"How was Shake?" he asked, changing the subject.
"Pretty easy. I think I mixed up something about King Lear and Caesar though." I shrugged. "Was Latin hard?"
"Nah. I mean, yes it was dreadful, but I just don't care." Yash said.
"Man, I hate Quire. Nothing we learned was on that fricken final. I swear she just makes shit up off the top of her head. It's mad!" Sango walked up next to us.
"I found it rather simple." Miroku said.
"You would." Sango rolled her eyes and muttered "Teachers pet."
"Am not." Miroku pouted and muttered back.
"Well guys just think . . . it's finally over! And we're seniors!"
"Right you are Kags." Sango agreed.
"Well, enough talk about school. If it's over, then I don't want to think about it until next year." Kouga joined the conversation. "Let's go somewhere."
"To the skate park?" Miroku asked. Sango rolled her eyes.
"Why did summer come so soon?" she asked me as the boys walked on ahead.
"I feel your pain Sango." I agreed.
"No you don't." she laughed. "Come on girls, lets follow our boys shall we?"
Summer had begun.
