Chapter 20: Broken Crystal and Shattered Dreams
Anubis_Himura
*~*~* Normal POV ~*~*~*~
The night was still young and the stars could scarcely be seen. The fireworks of the small campground were to be far less considerable than the elaborate works of proper towns and cities. However, as Tai and Leslie sat huddled together by the small bonfire that Tai had created, they didn't seem to care much. Tai had told Leslie of his lie. There was no sister to visit; he had simply wanted Leslie to spend the Fourth alone with him. A clever ploy too. Leslie was silently upset at fist, because she thought she ought to be at home. However, as the night went on, he began to . . . persuade her, of the delights of spending the fourth in a small campground, away from everything.
As the last of the small town fireworks ended Leslie looked over at Tai and smiled. She had grown quite fond of him, and quite honestly, it scared her. Leslie had many problems, each small in comparison, but to her they were monstrous.
For years she had been running away. Not, as Kagome had cleverly come up with, because of ex-husband Jai Haru, but for a far less noble reason. She was scared. If they spent too long in one place, she grew close to people. It was hard for Leslie not to let people into her heart; she was such a kind person. So, if the day came when she realized that she were being too friendly, she would tense up and want to leave immediately. Something stopped her now. Some higher force stopped her from running for the hills when she was with Tai. He was . . . gentle. Almost, perfect. Leslie would never admit it, but she had spent a lot of time 'over-hearing' Kagome and Inuyasha's conversations. Every time they talked about Tai being a horrible person she wanted to ask questions; voice her confusion. Because, when Tai was alone with Leslie, there couldn't be a sweeter man.
Leslie smiled up at Tai and sighed happily. "Happy Fourth Tai." she said, he voice echoing softly along the lake.
"Happy Fourth Leslie." they shared in a soft and tender kiss before Tai broke apart. "Now that we have a chance alone, I want to talk to you about something very important."
Leslie was startled by this sudden change of mood, she sat up and looked at Tai directly. "What is it?"
"Leslie," he began, digging around in his rucksack. "I suppose you've heard awful things from my son and Kagome about me."
"Never." Leslie quickly lied. It was true, the things she had over-heard were troubling. However, they had never directly told her.
"Nevertheless." He continued, "I would like to ask you, to be my wife." he had pulled out a small crystal box.
The box seemed to be more valuable than the ring. "I," Leslie was a loss of words. She silently vowed never to remarry after Jai, and now this . . . "I don't know what to say. I've got to think about Kagome, and where life is headed and . . . " her breathing became irregular as she looked at the ring inside the box.
"Do you love me Leslie?" Tai was staring at Leslie, burning into her eyes. She gasped, was it fright she was sensing?
"Yes." she whispered, her head slowly nodding in succession.
"Than marry me."
Leslie dropped the box. She had never seen Tai looking so intense. She wasn't sure if she was frightened, or shocked from the sudden proposal. "Yes." she whispered again.
"Wonderful." Tai picked up the forgotten box and slipped the diamond ring onto Leslie's finger. "We'll have a September wedding. The sooner the better."
Leslie nodded numbly, staring at the diamonds glittering back at her from her finger.

"Kagome! We're late!" Inuyasha said in a sing-song voice.
"Shut up! No we're not!" Kagome rolled over and looked at the clock. "Oh shit we are!" she sat up and looked around. She was in her mother's room. "Where's Song and Ku?"
"Went home." Yash answered.
"Dad and Kay?"
"Getting ready to leave."
"Souta and Hayleigh?"
"Same."
"Good. Lets go."
"Pajamas?" Yash smiled. Kagome was still very much in her pajamas.
"Shut up!" Kagome ran downstairs to her room and threw on some clothes. Yash went to the kitchen and started talking to Kaydee.
"Ready dear?" Jai asked as Kagome came out of her room. Kagome nodded and they head for the Durango (which Miroku left for them, thanks to some very persuasive efforts by Inuyasha).
The drive to Logan was uneventful. They talked about nothing in particular and when silence stretched it wasn't uncomfortable. Inuyasha helped get the luggage out of the car and Kaydee insisted they would be fine.
"It was nice seeing you two again!" Kaydee said, hugging Kagome and then Inuyasha. "Please, feel free to visit. Call. Write."
"We will. Same goes for you." Kagome said smiling. "I love you Daddy." she hugged Jai and then Souta. "Bye kiddo."
"Bye sis." Souta rolled his eyes.
"I'll tell Sango you said 'good-bye'." Kagome winked.
"Why!? What? Did she say something about me?" he began panicking, and fixing his hair as though Sango would pop out of nowhere.
"Maybe." Kagome smiled. "Bye bye Hayleigh. It was lovely seeing you again."
"You too Kagammie." Kagome hugged the little girl and then stood up waving.
"Bye guys!"
"Bye you two! Drive careful!" Jai called back.
"Naturally!" Yash smiled devilishly but the Haru's were out of sight. "Shall we head back then?"
"Great now there's just you." Kagome began walking toward the car.
"Yes, just me. Muahaha."
"Evil."
~*~*~ Inuyasha's POV (Does anybody even care if I write who's POV it is? I mean really, Are you even reading it anymore? ^-^~*~*
We hung out for most of the afternoon. We watched TV and played card games. (It was a lousy day outside so we didn't feel like going anywhere). We had brought Miroku back his car right after we had dropped off the Haru's. Miroku was in the shower so we left the keys with his mom and went home.
Around two in the afternoon we heard a truck pull into the driveway. We knew it was Tai and Leslie and made no effort to check. Kagome just killed my knight and now I had to defend my rook. Kagome dodged my attack on her bishop and knocked out my queen with a pawn I didn't see.
"Check." she said in a snooty manner.
"With an attitude and everything." I said back, not looking up from the board.
"Confidence is key. How did you do that?"
"Checkmate!" I said, mocking her pervious manner.
"You cheated! You couldn't possibly - there's no way - how? - What?" she was looking at the board, calculating the moves in her head. "But . . . but I . . "
"Lost." I said slowly. "It's okay Kagome. Repeat after me 'I, Kagome Higarashi, lost'." Inuyasha smiled before continuing, "To the powerful, handsome, devilishly charming, magnificent Inuyasha."
"Bite me." she said back darkly.
"Hmm, interesting concept. I just might."
Kagome shook her head at me and began setting up the board again. "Come on. Rematch."
"Kags," I complained. "That game took like four hours. Let's take a break." I said.
"Four hours my butt. It took," she looked at the clock behind my head. "Two."
"Same dif."
"Hello!" Leslie called.
"Hi Mom."
"Hi Ms. H." I said.
"I've got something to tell you Kagome." she said stonily.
"Inuyasha!" barked a voice from the door. "Inside now."
"I'm going to go." I said to Kagome, trying to keep the mood light so Ms. H wouldn't get suspicious. "See ya Kags." I didn't dare kiss her even on the cheek, for fear of Tai slaughtering me; and simply followed Tai up to the house.
"Now listen here." He said as we entered the living room. "There's going to be some changes see? Leslie and I are going to be married in September. She'll be your step-mom and that's final! Now, go to your room; you'll be seeing enough of that daughter of her's once we're married. She'll be your sister after all."
"WAIT!" I shouted feeling disturbed. "A) Step sister! B) You can't marry Ms. H!"
"I said that's final! Shall I show you the meaning of final?" the look in his eyes was stonier than his voice.
"No sir." I said firmly, despite the fact that my legs felt like jelly.
"Your room."
"Yes sir." I repeated, leaving the room immediately.
Kagome. My sanity. My girlfriend. My sister . . . I shuddered at the thought.
~!*~*!*~ Kags' POV ~*~*~*`
"MARRIED?!" I collapsed on to the couch, having stood up when I finished setting up the chess board. "You can't . . . mom . . . Yash . . . brother." My head was swimming. If my mom married Tai, Yash would be my step-brother. I couldn't be in love with my step-brother!
"Please Kagome," Mom sounded much too airy about this. "We'll be a great family." she reassured me. She moved into the kitchen and I followed her.
"No! Mom! Please!" I didn't want to do it. For once my mom was happy. But, at the same time, for once I was happy. It wasn't fair. "Mom, Tai is not a nice guy! Remember at Thanksgiving? Yash was in the hospital?"
"Kagome stop." she tried to cut me off.
"No. Yash was in there because Tai beat him! Mom, he beats him! Yash has never been in a skateboarding accident, or a fight with a schoolmate! He didn't have strep throat or the million other excuses he uses! His dad is abusive!"
"That is enough! Kagome this was the happiest weekend of my life and you've ruined it! Do you have any idea how hard I have been looking for someone to replace Jai? I've finally found a man I can live with, and you go and make up wild stories about him so that you can date his son! Well it's not nice Kagome! You shouldn't lie about people!"
I was crying. Not because I was being yelled at. Not because this would make dating Inuyasha weird. Not because my mom was getting remarried. I was crying because, for the first time in my life, my mom didn't believe a word I was saying.
"Then I have nothing more to say." I steadied my voice and spoke with a determination I didn't know I had. "I hope you find happiness with Tai. The best to you both." I smiled and walked into my room.
I collapsed on the bed and stared out the window. I watched Inuyasha's window for hours. Somewhere in the night the creeping darkness of the room turned into the creeping darkness of my head and I fell asleep.
~*~ Third Person Perspective ~*~
Kagome couldn't remember a time when she had been more miserable. She had taken on extra hours at work, just so she wouldn't have to go home. She had started sleeping over at Sango's, Miroku's, Kikyou's, and even considered Kouga's to avoid Tai and her mother. Inuyasha had done similar, staying at Miroku's nearly every night.
School was coming up soon, only two more weeks. Tai and Leslie were to be wed on September 24th which gave them about a month left to finish up planning. Kagome hadn't told her mother yet, but she refused to go to the wedding. Inuyasha wanted to refuse, but knew that his punishment wouldn't be worth it.
When Kagome and Inuyasha weren't at friends houses, or at work they were together, in one of their rooms, hiding from the adults of the world. Kagome tried to distance herself from Inuyasha at first. Hoping that if, maybe, they didn't see each other as much, they would stop liking each other and it wouldn't be as difficult when Tai and Leslie were married. That hadn't worked however. The more they were apart, the more then longed to see each other. Finally Kagome went to his house while Tai was at work and told him all her thoughts and troubles. He had called her a silly girl and settled the matter. They were going to be together. There was no doubt about that now. Even if they had to deal with their parents marriage, they would be together.
~*~ Kag's *~*`
School had started. We were seniors, it was official. Yash had been talking to Kouga about going around and egging the rival school. I called them retarded and we all went to first period. Yash and I had taken to making out around our parents, just to show that we weren't going to separate because of them. From what I gathered that was stupid because Yash had a black eye the next day. ("I knocked into the corner of the table". He had said.) Then, mom and Tai had taken to making out around us. Which was just disgusting. So we stopped. I still hadn't talked to my mother. At least not a full statement. I nodded a lot. I didn't care what I was agreeing too, as long as I didn't have to speak to her.
Sango and I were on the bleachers by the football field waiting for Yash and Miroku to arrive. We were waiting there for them because we all lucked out with early release and wanted to hang out.
"So, I still think that's wicked weird. You've made out with your brother." Sango said, watching the gym class run track.
"Hello, step-brother! Besides, they're not married yet." I rolled my eyes and watched the gym class too.
"Hey guys." Miroku said, taking a seat next to Sango.
Yash came and sat next to me, the swelling in his eye was going down. "It's really more of a pinkish now isn't it." I said touching it gently. He cringed.
"Don't touch it, it stings." he said pulling his head away.
"Sorry." I ruffled his hair and looked at Sango and Miroku. "Ugh, ten seconds and you're already in a lip-lock?" I asked looking away.
Sango hit me and pulled away from Miroku. "So, where were we? What do you guys wanna do?" she asked.
"Dunno." we answered in unison.
"Great. Lets . . . " my cell phone started ringing.
"Sorry." I said. "Hello?" I answered, walking away from the others so they could keep talking.
"- Kagome, get home right away.-"
"Why?" It was my mother of course. This was perhaps the most we had spoken in weeks.
"-Just do as I say Kagome.-" There was a pause and I could have sworn a sniffling. "-Please.-"
"I'm on my way" I hung up the phone and ran back to the others. "Guys I got to go home. I can't explain. I'm sorry."
"I'll give you ride Kags." Yash said, jumping to his feet. I felt horrible. I didn't know what was going on with my mother, but I didn't want Yash to worry.
"No, it's okay. I'll be fine." I smiled and dashed off.
"Kags!" I ignored him yelling to me. "KAGS!" still ignored. If he couldn't catch up to me, he couldn't worry and . . . "Kags!" he had grabbed my arm.
"I'm fine." I repeated sternly.
"I know you are. What's up with your mom?" he asked, a knowing look on his face.
"I don't know. I've got to go."
"Please, let me give you a ride home."
I sighed. He wasn't going to give up. "Fine."
We drove at top speed home. When we pulled into the driveway I tried to get him to go and hang out with Miroku and Sango. He refused.
"Mom?" I asked, walking into the house. "What's up?"
"Kagome go and -" she looked at Inuyasha. "Inuyasha, please," She smiled a rare smile that looked so genuine, but I knew was fake, "Go on home. Or go to a friend’s house! You’re a senior." she continued smiling.
Yash looked at me and I nodded. "Go." I whispered, blowing him a kiss.
"'Kay." he smiled and left.
"Kagome go and-"
"Pack." I was crying. That look in her eyes, only happened when we moved. I shook my head. "I don't want to go." I whined. "Please, please let me stay." I sobbed uncontrollably, collapsing to the floor. I had never liked it anywhere but here. I never had friends like Sango, Miroku and Inuyasha before.
"Pack Kagome."
I went to my room. The boxes were stored in the closet and I pulled them out, packing up everything I owned. I was done in about twenty minutes. I went into the living room where my mother was already packed and waiting. "The U-Haul will be here shortly. I figured that we had more stuff than last time."
I nodded, feeling completely drained and numb. "Can," I began, "Can I go say good . . . good" I couldn't say 'good-bye' without crying hysterically. She nodded.
I ran out of the house to Inuyasha's. I knocked furiously on the door, taking out all my anger and frustration on the poor wooden object. Yash must have been waiting for me because I was soon pounding him on the chest without realizing it. He coaxed me inside and sat me down on the couch. I rushed into a speech about my mother and our situation. "Inuyasha . . . .mymother's . . . makingusmoveagain . . . andIdon'twanttobut . . . Ihavenochoice! Shewontletmestayhere . . . andIjustcametosay, goodbye . . . because . . . Iloveyou and . . . I'llneverforgetyou!" I closed my eyes because I didn't want to see the look of pain in his. If it was half of what I felt, the look would kill me.
"Kagome," he said softly, pulling me close to him. I wrapped my arms around his waist and hugged myself to him. I wasn't going to leave. Nothing in the world could make me. I inhaled his scent and held my eyes closed viciously. When I opened them it would be me and Yash. There would be no moving truck, and nothing bad would happen. "I love you too." he said just as softly.
I opened my eyes to see the U-Haul being driven into the yard. I choked back a sob and looked up at Inuyasha. "Please don't let me go."
He looked as though he were about to cry too. "I don't know how to stop it Kagome." Inuyasha had never taken defeat so easily. Maybe I wasn't worth fighting for. I mentally hit myself for thinking it. Of course I was worth it. Yash loved me!
"Knowing my mother, we'll be going someplace west. Or perhaps even Canada." My voice was strong and I didn't recognize it from the pain engulfing me. "I'll call a lot." I finally let go of him and stopped staring into his eyes. It hurt too much to look at him. "Keep an eye out for Miroku and Sango for me. Tell them what happened, I can't say good-bye to them too. Maybe I'll . . . I don't know. But I'll call them. Don't egg any schools." I almost laughed, "If your dad acts up, stay at Miroku's. Don't let him keep doing that to you. I won't be around to make sure you're alive. Tell Miroku he's to watch out for you twice as much now." I smiled a little. "And, if you meet someone, or realize you like someone -"
"Kagome -"
I help up a hand to stop him. "Just go out with her. It's fine. Be happy. Fall in love. I'll miss you. I love you. You'll always be my true love." I had meant to say ‘first love’.. but something about ‘true love’ made more sense. I smiled again. "Please, just be happy." I finally looked back at him. His eyes full of sadness and misery beyond that I had ever seen. I was almost happy to know that I was loved so much.
"I can't let you leave Kagome."
"Then don't." I stood up, knowing he could do nothing to stop this.
I went back to the house, Inuyasha close behind me. "Ms. H!" he burst in. "Please don't take Kagome from me! Please!" I had never seen him so panicked and desperate.
"Inuyasha," My mother began delicately.
"What about my dad? He loves you." I wasn't sure that was true, but Inuyasha was trying and I was grateful.
"Tai does not love me Inuyasha. You know that." I looked at her skeptically.
"Please Ms. H. Then, just break up with him. But don't move away! Don't! Please!"
"I'm sorry Inuyasha." mom took me by the hand and forced me into the car.
"NO! YASH!"
"Kagome!"
Mom started the car and drove out of sight. Yash ran down the driveway. Down the street. Until mom got out of traffic and drove faster than any man could run and the sight of him fell into the distance. I turned around in my seat, closing my eyes.
"Never look back Kagome. It only makes things harder."
I laughed coldly. I turned up the radio and sat back as we got on the turnpike. This wasn't the end of it.
