Chapter 1: Kagome in a desperate situation

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha. As much as I would like to Rumiko Takahashi does. Damn!

A/N: This is my first Inuyasha story, so it might not be that good. I just thought I'd try writing one. So please be nice. I don't mind constructive criticism, but don't be rude.

As Kagome and her friends were walking back to Kaede's village she suddenly felt the presence of a jewel shard, telling Inuyasha to put her down. As she climbed off his back he drew Testuaiga saying, "Kagome get back". With that everyone immediately fell into position to ready themselves for the fight. Miroku stood by Inuyasha while he stood in front of Kagome with Shippo behind her, and Sango stood a few feet away by the transformed Kilala. Naraku swiftly approached with Kohaku.

"Sango stay out of this! This is my fight!" Inuyasha told her when he saw Kohaku. As Inuyasha faced Naraku he smirked, "I'm going to enjoy this. This time you won't escape so easily"

"We'll see, Inuyasha" Naraku laughed.

Jumping into the air, Inuyasha swung Testusaiga, ready to strike Naraku. Unfortunately, Inuyasha had forgotten about Kohaku in his determination to kill Naraku. Before he could hit Naraku he stepped forward and deflected the swing. Using his superior strength Inuyasha threw Kohaku five feet from him so he wouldn't have to fight him anymore.

Standing with a smile of vague amusement Naraku waited for Inuyasha's complete attention. The fool doesn't even realize that he's stepped into my trap. While he's focused on me Kohaku will take the girl's jewel shards. "Why don't you attack Inuyasha? Have you lost your nerve? I thought you wanted to kill me"

"I AM going to kill you, you bastard!" Inuyasha growled and ran to attack Naraku, swinging Tetsusaiga wildly in his rage.

Oh boy, now Inuyasha's lost his temper. He might get himself killed fighting Naraku like that. I better stay to back him up, Miroku thought when he saw how pissed Inuyasha was.

Turning to Kagome he said, "Move away from here. This fight will probably turn deadly soon."

"Of course," she said nodding.

As Naraku and Inuyasha fought with their swords Kohaku got up from the ground where Inuyasha had thrown him and walked toward Kagome.

"What is Kohaku doing?" Sango asked Miroku when she noticed him moving toward Kagome.

"I don't know, but protect Kagome while I help Inuyasha," Miroku grimly said.

With that said Sango moved to get in front of Kagome before Kohaku reached her. But she was too late. By the time she was half way there Kohaku had already reached Kagome.

"Kohaku? What are you doing?" asked Kagome as she saw Kohaku standing in front of her.

"I want your jewel shards" Kohaku said as he attacked Kagome.

"Noo!!!" Sango screamed as she leaped in front of Kagome. Using hiraikotsu as a shield she was able to block the blow. "Stop Kohaku! Snap out of Naraku's mind control!"

While Sango was talking she inadvertently lowered hiraikotsu. Kohaku saw the opening and took it, slicing into Sango's right arm and threw her to the ground. Gasping she griped the wound and looked at him in shock. He stepped around her and again began his attack on Kagome. He moved faster than anyone had thought he could, and before Kagome had a chance to move he was on her. He used his weapon to tear into her stomach even more viciously than when he'd sliced Sango's arm.

"Kohaku?" asked Kagome in a pain laced voice.

"Kagome and Sango are hurt!! ," Shippo yelled from the tree he'd hid behind when he saw Kohaku attack Sango.

"What were you saying about me losing my nerve, Naraku? ," Inuyasha taunted as he knocked Naraku's sword away from him.

Inuyasha has become stronger since we last fought. If I'm not careful he may actually kill me before Kohaku finishes his job, Naraku thought. He watched the sword fall to the ground warily. It was too far for him to reach, and he couldn't continue to fight Inuyasha without a weapon. He was beginning to seriously worry until he heard what he'd been waiting for.

Kagome and Sango are hurt!!

When Miroku heard that he immediately looked back, forgetting Naraku in his fear for Kagome and Sango. He saw them on the ground bleeding from their injuries. Kohaku stood over Kagome, holding her jewel shards. "Kohaku has Kagome's jewel shards, Inuyasha! We've been set up! ," he yelled when he saw that. Inuyasha looked at Miroku when he heard that.

"What! ," He turned back to Naraku snarling, "You bastard, you had this planned all along!"

"That's right, Inuyasha. Now I have the jewel shards you so painstakingly collected, and the added benefit of knowing that Kagome's dead," Naraku said, leaping toward Kohaku and grabbing him, disappearing in a cloud of miasma before Miroku could stop them.

Not even caring that Naraku escaped with the jewel shards Inuyasha ran to where Kagome lay. She was unconscious because of blood loss, and looked deathly pale. He reached for her arm and felt a pulse. Inuyasha breathed a sigh of relief. She's still alive.

"Is Kagome dead, Inuyasha?" Shippo asked fearfully when he saw him looking for a pulse.

"No. I feel a pulse, but she's badly hurt. We have to get her to Kaede's," he said, picking her up gently in his arms. Looking over at Miroku he saw him helping Sango up. "You okay, Sango?"

"Yes. It was just my arm that was hurt. I'm more concerned about Kagome. She was hurt

worse than me," she said as Miroku helped her onto Kilala.

After he was sure that Sango would make it until they got to Kaede's Inuyasha took off running as fast as he dared with Kagome. He easily outpaced everyone else and was at Mushashi village in half an hour.

As she rode through the air on Kilala's back Sango couldn't help feeling guilty. It was her brother that hurt Kagome. Because she couldn't bring herself to fight her brother, knowing that he was under Naraku's control, her best friend could die. This is all my fault. How can they forgive me after this?

In a strained, low voice she asked, "Miroku, do you really think that Kaede will be able to heal Kagome? She lost so much blood, and looked so pale. She looked like she was barely breathing."

"Inuyasha said that she was still alive, and Kaede is a skilled healer. If she can not completely heal Kagome then she can aid her enough so that Inuyasha can take her back to her time and the healers there can heal her," Miroku said frowning. "This was not your fault. Naraku used your love for your brother against you. We know that."

As he said that he pulled Sango closer, hugging her while they traveled. It was the only comfort he could offer her. Sango was so miserable, and still in pain from her injury so she didn't protest. For once the houshi wasn't groping her, and she needed his comfort at the moment.

"Miroku's right Sango. If Kaede can't heal her then the healers in her time will. Inuyasha won't let her die," Shippo consoled Sango from where he was sitting in her lap.

Inuyasha threw open Kaede's door. "Kaede! Where the hell are you? Kagome's hurt, and needs your help!" he shouted when he saw that the old woman wasn't there. Damn her! Where can she be at a time like this? he thought as he put Kagome down.

"Ye bellowed for me Inuyasha?" Kaede dryly said standing in the doorway.

"Hai. Kagome's been hurt."

"How did this happen?" Kaede asked as she saw the stomach wound when she knelt by Kagome.

"We don't have time to talk about it now. I'll explain later. Kagome is what's important now. She needs help now. So can you heal her or not? If you can't then I'll

take her to her time" Inuyasha snapped.

"Calm down Inuyasha. I can heal her. But I need you to gather an herb for me. Kagome will need it to help her with her pain," Kaede said, trying to calm him down. He would be no help to Kagome if he started panicking.

As Inuyasha was about to ask what herb she needed Miroku, Sango, and Shippo arrived on Kilala. Shippo immediately went to Kagome to see how if she'd woken up.

"She's dead! This is all your fault, Inuyasha! If you had protected Kagome better then she would still be alive!" the kitsune wailed in anguish when he saw that she was still unconscious.

"She isn't dead, stupid! Kaede can heal her. She needs me to get an herb to help with the pain. And it is NOT my fault that Kagome's hurt!" Inuyasha yelled, shaking Shippo by his tail.

"Which herb do you need Kaede?" Miroku asked to cut in through Inuyasha and Shippo's squabbling. If left to themselves they'd fight for hours, and Kagome needed to be treated right away.

"It grows in the forests, and it looks spiky and yellow."

"Okay, we'll get it immediately"

In a village not too far from Mushashi the priestess Kikyo stood by a river bank, feeling the wind ripple through her hair. It was a moment of tranquility that she didn't often experience since her rebirth. Suddenly, she felt a tremor shoot throughout her body.

Why is this happening? I have not felt pain like this since my death, she wondered in alarm as felt a vicious pain shoot across her stomach. Then she understood. Her reincarnation, that girl, must be dying. There could be no other explanation for her to feel such pain. As she made the realization, she felt the soul's that she'd gathered leaving her body. I must save her. If she dies then I will die with her! Kikyo thought in alarm.

Night came and Kagome lay by the fire, Inuyasha holding her hand. Her wound had been cleansed, stitches used to close it, and the herb was boiled into a tea to ease Kagome's discomfort. But she hadn't woken up and her breathing was shallow.

Every one else sat on the other side of the fire and silently wached. None of them dared get too close to Kagome. Every time anyone approached besides Kaede Inuyasha glared, and pulled Kagome closer to him.

"Why hasn't she woken up yet? The wounds closed. And she isn't breathing normally. Did she lose too much blood?" Shippo asked Kaede when half the night was gone without any sign of improvement.

"I have done what I can for her. All we can do now is wait."

As Inuyasha listened to them he sat waiting, hoping, and praying that Kagome would open her eyes. Is Kagome going to die? She should have awakened by now. Kami, please let her be okay. He was so absorbed in Kagome that he didn't notice the sound of approaching footsteps. When he did realize that someone was coming he abruptly stood up.

"Someone's coming" he informed everyone.

"Who could be coming this late at night?" Shippo asked.

"I don't know, but I don't like it. It's probably a demon."

As Inuyasha readied himself for a fight, the door opened and someone was silhouetted in the moonlight.

"Who are you, and what do you want at this time of night?" Inuyasha demanded.

Right before Inuyasha attacked the person stepped forward to reveal . . . Kikyo?!
