Ch 1. A new beginning.

15 years after infection.
Inuyasha Shinto squinted up at the trees surrounding his home as he took a break from exercising in the back yard with his prized sword. This was his special time of the morning, where he focused and fought for a little bit of his sanity back from the voices and buzzing in his head that had been ramping up in volume overnight.
Ever since the B strain or Banks strand as it was better known had been released into the population, everyone between the ages of 25 and 42 were beginning to learn to cope with the new abilities it gave. Schools and classes were standard procedure for anyone reaching 25 so that they could handle the noise and confusion that came with the sudden ability to read minds and later auras.
This ability didnt come without a price and benefits. In the early days, when little was understood about the abilities that the strain gave and with the confusion, there was widespread suicides. Death had been rampant until one of the benefits the strain gave helped to stop the deaths. With this opening of the mind and sixth senses, those who had it, could tell their soul mates by touch. When two people with the ability came close and touched, they knew that this was the one when the silence fell in their minds and only the thoughts of the two were heard. When the two people joined though, their power level would ramp up giving them many more abilities.
Giving people messages on this sort of broadband communication due to this ramp up, was the trick of early mavericks Holland Banks and her soul mate Jeff McQueen who had sought information on the anomaly they both thought they had. After a time and pain on the pairs part, they got information out to the world about how to control the noise that was driving a part of the world insane.
Focus was the key everyone learned. If a person with the strain could find an activity that allowed them to concentrate fully on the task for awhile, then they could go for a time without the voices. Sadly, only soul mates were able to completely control the ability. Soulmates it was found could, after a time, learn to block out almost all the voices and with the aid of their mate, be able to hear the thoughts of normal people as well. Soulmates also shared a fundamental knowledge of each other since they opened up their minds completely during the act of joining. Soulmates it was said, actually shared a single soul.
Early on this mind reading ability had caused problems when people had to get used to the full access they were granted to untrained minds. The good and bad thoughts of people were pretty much there for the knowing making the world a strained place before people were used to it. Friendships tore apart and marriages were open to all infidelities the other person acted upon. Many with the new ability left their wives or husbands early on when they found out that they were mated to someone other than their soul mate. Divorce rates skyrocketed until people universally decided the it would be best for people to wait until the strain activated before marriage and a free service for people to find their Soulmates was instituted. New laws had also been enacted to keep fraud and the like under control now that the minds of people were open to the unscrupulous. In the end though, the world had settled down and as usual, life went on.
Reaching for a water bottle to quench his thirst, Inuyasha closed his eyes as the voices zipped through his head. It had been just a year since the voices had appeared for him and six now for his brother. With time he had become rather adept at ignoring the muted ones. Once in awhile some of the voices would blink out now and then, a testimate to the knowledge of soul mates in this new time. Smiling, inuyasha noted his friends thoughts in the background after a lengthy pause.
Miroku had been one of the lucky ones in Inuyashas opinion. Only months after first gaining the ability most of their peers had acquired, Miroku had found his silence in the form of his new sparring partner at the dojo he ran. Miroku and Sango had both been downright shocked when silence fell for a short while after her first punch to his head. To say that the punch wasnt because of a match had little meaning to the pair when Sango so easily read his lecherous thoughts about her butt as she prepared to spar. It had decidedly taken some time for the hoshi and Sango to get together, but at least in Sangos words she understood him much better now.
Inuyasha shrugged as the thoughts of dounuts flitted through with plans for the dojo opening that Miroku was contemplating. Slowly and not to Inuyashas surprise, Mirokus thoughts turned to hurting Inuyasha for eves dropping. Inuyasha smiled as he opened his eyes and went inside his home to get dressed for the start of his day at the antique weapons shop he owned.
