InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Tumbleweed's Ficlet Corner ❯ The Odd Little Attitude Adjustment ( Chapter 5 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning

Kagome could tell that there was a definite change in Inuyasha. He was being more polite and actually showed that he could eat his favorite dish with chopsticks instead of slurping down the entire bowl. He put up a miniscule fight last time she wanted to go home, and didn't complain when she was three days late. Something was up, and she could feel it. Shippo had even made a comment on how `weird' he was being. Inuyasha just keh'd and went about his business. He didn't hit Shippo. He didn't curse at him. He didn't pick him up and throw him by his tail. He didn't even snap at him. Kagome was beginning to get suspicious after a week of this behavior.

“I know what you mean.” said Sango during their bath discussion. “He's been acting strangely all week. It's even beginning to set Miroku off. Did you see how Miroku was snappish at dinner?”

I never meant to do those things to you
and so I have to say before I go
that I just want you to know

The younger girl nodded. “I did,” she murmured. “I wonder if it had anything to do with that one time when we saw Kikyo.” She wasn't going out on a limb with that guess either. He had been very pensive after he disappeared for two hours, having mentioned something about Kikyo being nearby. They'd moved on with their walk, and nothing had been said, but it was clear that Inuyasha was changing that night at dinner.

“Maybe Kikyo died,” Sango offered. “Or told him that she was going to hell without him.”

Kagome snorted. “Kikyo wouldn't do that. She's too attached to him.” Kagome's tone held a cart load of bitterness in each word. While she felt sorry for Kikyo sometimes, most of the time she was jealous of her ability over Inuyasha.

I've found a reason for me
tochange who I used to be
areason to start over new
and the reason is you

Inuyasha was listening. He wasn't sneaking looks at the girls. He was listening to their conversation, nothing more. Who am I kidding? He thought, I'm about as low as the monk right now... However, he was facing the complete opposite direction from the girls, so he could not be prosecuted for peeking just yet.

Sango stepped out of the water and dried herself off, slipping back into her kimono. “I'm going back to camp, Kagome. Take some time to think, okay?” Sango was gone before Kagome could question her about the remark. Shaking her head, she leant against the rocks in the hot spring and let her eyes drift close. All her other senses were on full alert, but for a moment she pictured Inuyasha right there with her. She groaned and rolled over.

I'm sorry that I hurt you
it'ssomething I must live with everyday
andall the pain I put you through

“Who am I kidding?” Kagome admonished herself. “Inuyasha doesn't love me any more than the bush he pees on...” she muttered, folding her arms under her chin. Inuyasha raised an eyebrow and decided that he should do some listening rather than speaking right now. “I only wish he'd wake up and see what's right before his eyes instead of pining after that dead, clay... thing.” Kagome found that thinking aloud was the easiest way to get through her problems. That way, she didn't have to have the entire burden in her head, where things were easily forgotten. Plus, she could share the load with the trees. “I mean, honestly, how much love could a zombie have?”

She laughed and shook her head, laying it down on her arms with a sigh. “I suppose he does love her, and I can't change that... Even if I love him right back. He's just so... ugh, infuriating sometimes! I can't stand him half the time, but then... his flaws are just more reasons why I want to be with him. Even if it meant giving up my home, I would stay with him... If only he'd love me. I guess, like the old saying goes, opposites do attract... I just wish he'd love me.”

I wish that I could take it all away
andbe the one who catches all your tears
that'swhy i need you to hear

Inuyasha snorted. “Keh,” he mumbled aloud, “Silly girl.”

Kagome stiffened. “Inuyasha.” she bit out. “Sit!” There was a tell-tale thud and Kagome sunk down to her neck in the water. “You little sneak! SIT!! Go back to camp!” she yelled. Inuyasha stood after the allotted time that the beads held him down. He crossed his arms and looked at her head that was sticking up out of the hot spring. She pointed imperiously back toward camp with a withering glare aimed at him. He flinched, but turned around. “Back to camp!”

“I need to talk to you.” he told her, tilting his head backward but not looking at her. “It wasn't what you think, Kagome.” he said. Kagome just lifted an eyebrow at him as he continued. “I didn't meet Kikyo - that was an alibi. Kikyo's long gone.” He sighed at this point and Kagome couldn't help but feel even the slightest bit of guilt at her earlier words. “I met with my father.”

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

The girl behind him shook her head. “But,” she mumbled, “I thought he was dead.”

“It was a vision, Kagome.” he snapped before she could argue further. Kagome smiled. That was the Inuyasha she was used to. Quieting down, she stayed in the water and listened. “He made me realize that I can't keep running from what's right in front of me. I can't keep denying what you deserve. I can't keep telling myself that I love her. I don't.” Those chocolate eyes of hers blurred as she blinked rapidly, trying to comprehend what he was telling her. “I overheard you and Sango talking, and I've changed because Father made me realize that if I kept up my asshole façade,” He closed his eyes and shuddered for a moment. “I'd lose you.”

And the reason is you
And the reason is you
And the reason is you
And the reason is you

Kagome looked to the dirt in front of her and picked at it with a nail quietly. “I promised I'd stay at your side for as long as you wanted me there, Inuyasha.” she whispered.

Inuyasha turned around with an exasperated exhalation, throwing his hands up in the air. He was frustrated, that much was for sure. “That's not what I meant, Kagome. You may be by my side forever, but he made me realize that if I don't shape up,” He met her eyes, “you'd be miserable. I don't want that. I want you to be happy. Even if it means being away from me.”

I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

“If you want to go home, Kagome, then go. I'm not going to stop you anymore. You have a life there, and I can't change that. I won't make you abandon it anymore. You can come back here when you want to. If you don't want to come at all,” He swallowed thickly. “I understand. But only if it will make you happy.”

The future-born girl stared back into his golden eyes for what seemed like eternity. “Inuyasha,” she said uneasily at length. “I know you heard what I said earlier.” He cringed at the mention of his bad deed, expecting another sit. He didn't receive one. “I want nothing more than to be with you - but if I can't be loved here, then I have to keep up with my education in my time. It's the only way I can survive. But if you're going to make it worth my while, I'll stay with you for as long as you personally want me.”

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

Inuyasha stepped forward and knelt down. Wrapping one arm under her shoulder, he lifted her up to eye level with him. Not once did his eyes stray from hers. “It will be worth your while.” he said huskily before pressing his lips to hers. Kagome stiffened and calmed in a matter of seconds in his arms. She managed to get a knee on the ground before bringing her arms around his neck and angling her head just right to give him more access.

The hanyou pulled back after a few minutes of the heated action and pressed his forehead to hers, closing his eyes. “I'm so sorry for anything I've done to you, Kagome... I was just pushing you away. I didn't mean it.”

“It's okay, Inuyasha.” she replied. One of her slender hands tangled itself in his hair while he took the other into his own.

I've found a reason to show
aside of me you didn't know
areason for all that I do
andthe reason is you

“I love you, Kagome.”

“I love you too, Inuyasha.”

And they lived happily ever after. XP I'm getting stuck on those short-sweet-to-the-point-Inu/Kag-get-together fics... This is the second one in a day. But hey, if I don't put it up... the bunny will still eat at my mind. o.o;; so up it goes.
