Chapter 1: Denial

Ring! Ring! The alarm clock screamed on the bedside table. Kagome stretched her hand from under the mountains of her warm blanket and brought it down with a thump on top of the ear-piercing machine. Upon doing that, she returned to the coziness of her bed and to her endless dreamland. Minutes later, the alarm clock began it's daily wake up call again and this time succeeded in fulfilling its duty. Ignoring the drowsiness trying to hypnotize her back to her deep slumber, Kagome got up with her eyes still squished shut and met the cold tile bedroom floor with her bare feet. From the way she was walking from her bed, you could have sworn she was sleepwalking if it wasn't already 7:30 AM in the morning. She looked up at the clock drowsily and yawned.

“It's 7:30 in the morning.” Then as if suddenly struck by a thunder, she opened her eyes, and shrieked, “It's 7:30 in the morning!” and as if possessed by a spirit moved wildly around the room looking for her red slippers. Finally finding them under her bed, she zoomed out the room and to the hallway, stepping in the bathroom located next door. Minutes and minutes later, she came out with her hair sticking to her face and her whole body dripping wet, leaving damp traces of water on the hallway floor. She darted inside her bedroom almost slipping because of her soaked feet, slammed the door, and quickly seized a black long pair of pants with a red tank top and hastily put them on. She swiftly combed her hair at high speed, snatched her bag and books, and flew out of the room like a hawk, only to open the door again to grab her keys on top of her desk. Thundering down the steps of the marble staircase leading to the lower story of the house with her hair flying in all directions and moving in a rapid pace, it was clear that she overslept…again.

“Good morning, Kagome.” Grandpa said distractedly behind the newspaper concealing his face, obviously absorbed by the morning news.

“Hey grandpa,” Kagome replied, swiftly placing a kiss on his cheek as she grabbed a piece of toast from the plate placed on the dining table.

“Won't you join us for breakfast?” Mrs. Higurashi asked, placing mountains of pancakes with cascading waterfalls of syrup, yellow and fluffy omelets, and crispy bacon on the table.

Kagome's mouth immediately watered at the sight of the wonderful food. But remembering the time, she quickly shook her head and said, “Can't mom. I'm already late as it is,” stopping short on turning the doorknob and checked her watch, which read 7:45 already.

“All right then. Be careful. Have fun.” She replied smiling.

“I will mom. Bye! See you later!” Kagome said and bolted out the door with only a piece of toast in her hand.

With that, she scurried down the countless shrine steps, her yellow backpack bouncing. From the rate she was running, it wasn't a surprise when she tripped on one of the stairs in the middle. Arms flailing wildly, trying to regain balance, she shut her eyes closed and waited for her face to meet the hard cement. Surprisingly, her visit with the cold cement was cut short, when she felt a strong arm grip her around the waist, tightly holding her against whoever her captor was. Her instincts told her to turn around and punch the stranger's face, when she heard somebody whisper in her ear,

“Still clumsy, aren't you wench? Bet you overslept again.”

She let out a gasp of surprise and turned around in the fierce embrace and came face to face with none other than Inuyasha Takahashi. To say that he's beautiful is an understatement. His long soft silver hair dancing with the wind whipped her face, white fuzzy ears twitching causing her to want to reach out and rub them, mesmerizing golden eyes capturing her eyes in an unwavering stare, and his infamous handsome smirk plastered in his face caused her knees to buckle. They have been going out since the freshman year and now that they're in the first three months of senior year, he was still able to catch her off guard as if it was they just met. They have been the best of friends since they were 4. Kagome's mother had to work overtime and having no relatives close to baby-sit Kagome, she turned to her closest best friend, who just happened to be Inuyasha's mother, Izayoi. Mr. Takahashi had just come home from a business trip and brought Inuyasha back home.

“Well are you just going to stay like this wench and stare at me like I've grown horns or something and be late for class or should you give me my morning and thank-you-for-saving-me-again kiss, get going, and if traffic approves, get to class in time?” Inuyasha said laughter lacing his words.

Kagome snapped back in time and was brought out of her reverie when he heard him talk. She managed to get out of his grasp, looked him squarely in the eye and said,

“Let's get going then.” And started to go down the last few remaining steps.

“Oi! Wait for me!” he said, and took a big stride and in no time was walking beside her to his cherry red Mercedes convertible.

She caught her arm, spun her around to face him, and started to move his lips against hers. She wanted to feel his lips against her badly but moved away, still annoyed by his smart-ass comment earlier. He knew that she could make her look like a fool staring hungrily at him. And apparently he liked doing that to her. His ears drooped, falling back lying against his head, a pout formed in his lips, and he whined like a lost puppy. She turned around and realized that mistake when her eyes met a hurt and sad Inuyasha, confusion and pain apparent in his eyes. Her heart wrenched at the sight of his eyes mixed with these emotions and it told her to jump to him and hug him and kiss him and tell him she's sorry but she was never one to give in so easily. She knew that if she gave up now, he'd tease her about it later. Those teasing she never did enjoy particularly. She continued walking leaving Inuyasha standing frozen on the ground still trying to figure out what happened.

When she stopped in front of the car, she looked back and said,

“Well, are you coming or not? It's already 7:50. Professor Onigumo will kill us if we're late…again. So come on already.”

Inuyasha moved towards the car still looking puzzled. He held Kagome's door open for her and Kagome thanked him smiling. Inuyasha walked around the car and opened his door. The drive to school was silent and awkward for Inuyasha but obviously not for Kagome. Inuyasha watched her from the corner of his eye and she was practically beaming. Inuyasha decided that it was best to drop the subject. For a while that is. He didn't want to ruin Kagome's mood. She being upset always hurt him. Painfully. Letting out a sigh, he said,

“We're here.” unbuckling his seat belt and opening his door. He walked around his car and opened Kagome's door for her. She smiled a thank you and waved to her friends, Miroku and Sango across the yard.

`This is going to be a long day'

Walking with Kagome side by side, he whispered in her ear, “Don't think I won't ask you about what happened this morning.”

Inuyasha smiled when Kagome shivered from the sudden contact.

“Hey Inuyasha! Hi Kagome!” said Sango once the two had finally reached them.

“So how's your morning Kagome?” Miroku asked.

“Oh, you know, the usual.” Kagome replied.

“Meaning, you overslept again and Inuyasha being a baka therefore pissing you off.” Sango said in a matter-of-factly tone. Kagome and Miroku laughed heartily while Inuyasha growls, clearly annoyed.

Ring! Ring!

“Well I guess time to get to class then Kagome.”

“Right.” Kagome said happily completely forgetting about Inuyasha and what happened this morning as she hooked her arm into Sango's offered arm as they walked to class.

“Ready to go Inuyasha?”

“Keh.”

“Don't worry you can talk to me about the idiotic thing you did this morning and hopefully gain Kagome's attention again. I know you terribly miss it.”

After saying that, Miroku earned the first hit of the day.

“I didn't do anything! And I don't need her attention.” Inuyasha grumbled.

`Wonder if I am going to break my record today. Ah, 50 hits in one day. I am a genius!'

“Sure Inuyasha and I promise not to grope Sango anymore. You sure do love to live in denial.”
