Miroku woke as a blanket settled around his shoulders. “Kagome-sama?”

“Shh, go back to sleep. It's early yet.”

Miroku's hand wandered to the blanket she'd tucked around him. Not mine. He met her eyes. “You, Kagome-sama?”

Hesitating briefly, the girl nodded.

“May I ask why, Kagome-sama?” the monk whispered, as he sat up.

“Lately, you looked like you'd lost all hope. You are my friend, Miroku-sama. I didn't like to see you sad. I wanted to give you something else to think about.”

Miroku nodded. “You have been very kind, Kagome-sama.”

“You liked your presents then?” Kagome asked, eyes aglow.

“Very much. I'm most curious as to how the shell was left.” He raised one eyebrow. “Kagome-sama, have you been peeping?”

Blushing, she mumbled, “I didn't peek.”

Miroku chuckled, but turned serious. “I especially liked the ink. It's very fine. Each gift was thoughtful. Do the others know what you've been doing?”

“Not really. Well, yesterday was hard to overlook. They're curious, but haven't asked outright.”

“This is the last, isn't it?”

Kagome nodded. “The Twelve Days of Christmas has come to an end.”

“Sit with me? When the others wake, we'll tell them the whole story. I think they'll enjoy it.”

Miroku tucked the miko close to his side and wound the new blanket around their backs. With one arm draped companionably over her shoulders, he leaned to place a kiss on top of her head. “Thank you, Kagome-sama, with all my heart. You are a true friend indeed.”
