But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil,
Thou shalt not eat of it:
For one day that thou eatest thereof

Chapter one
First sight

My mom drove me to airport about an hour ago. It hurt to know that I would be leaving her. It would make her happy though. My mom had remarried an American/Japanese man, named Phil. Phil traveled a lot though. Since he was a baseball player. My mom stayed home with me , it made her unhappy to be away from him for so long. So now I’m going to go live with my dad for awhile. This would be a good thing. I think. My dad lived in a small town in the Noto peninsula. The rainiest place in Japan. I used to go there every summer for two weeks until I was 14. Charlie, my dad was an American who spoke so fluently I would think he was Japanese. I called him Charlie instead of dad, though now I’m sure I would have to call him dad. I wouldn’t be aloud to call him Charlie to his face. He was overly happy that I was coming. Me? Well it didn’t matter what I thought.

Charlie picked me up in his cruiser. I was already in a depressing mood. It was raining, no pouring down. Tokyo wasn’t rainy. Hardly ever did it rain. I loved the sun, but I had already said my good byes to it. Charlie drove up into the driveway. The silence was killing me. It was more than obvious that me and Charlie’s relationship was…difficult, for better words. Charlie helped me get my bags upstairs.

“Well I let the store clerk pick out your bedding, you like purple right?” The first words I had heard so far come out of mouth besides “Hi Kagome” When my plane landed.

“Purple’s….cool.” I quickly thought.

He nodded. Looking around for awhile. Obviously uncomfortable. “Okay” He said leaving the room.

I turned around and started to put my things up. The best thing about Charlie , he doesn’t hover. Back at home I couldn’t get that kind of privacy with my worry wart of a mom. It was good to be able to show my real emotions, not have to fake a smile. I heard a car door close from outside. I looked out my window to see a red truck parked behind the cruiser. I walked downstairs, then outside. Charlie was talking to a man in a wheelchair. In English. Charlie turned around.

“You remember Billy Black don’t you Kagome?” “Yeah.” I mused. I shook his hand. I remembered this man. He was an American who befriended Charlie along time ago. Charlie and Billy kept talking in there native tongue. I understood as well , but after speaking Japanese for so long, it was a hard habit to break. There was a boy behind him. My age or a year younger. Probably 16.

“Hi I’m Koga, we uh used to make mud pies together when we were kids.” He laughed. He showed a set of pearly white teeth. I smiled. “Yeah, no I remember.” At least I knew one person here my age so far.

“So what do you think?” Charlie interrupted.

“What?” I asked confused.

“The truck, I just bought if off Billy here.”

“Wait for me?” I said pointing a finger at myself. He nodded.

“Oh my gosh…yes I love it!” I mused. There was something comfortable about it. I liked it. a lot.

The next day I woke up early. I hated that I got little sleep last night. There was too much pounding rain. I got dressed and went downstairs to see Charlie eating some eggs and bacon. I got some of my own, quickly ate it, then waved my dad goodbye. I got in my truck and drove my way to school. I didn’t quite know where it was at, but I saw the sign reading Noto Peninsula high school : Home of the Trojans just off the highway. It was March, in the middle of the semester. Great. I drove up to a good enough spot and cut off the engine quickly so that it didn’t catch a lot of attention, since it was almost roaring. I got out slamming my door shut. A few kids where laughing, but I didn’t have time to care about that.

I was walking outside to the building my class was at, so the schedule said , when a boy came by and stopped me.

“Hi your, Kagome Higurashi right?”

I looked up. “Uh, yeah that’s me.” I smiled faintly. Just great I guess I was news around here. The boy was tall and thin. Light brown hair, same color eyes to match.

“I’m Suikotsu the eyes and ears of this school.” He said with a big smile.

“If you need any help be sure to ask me!”

I nodded. He showed me to my first class. He was in the same class as me so it worked out just fine.

The rest of the morning went by very simple, there where the few brave students that would ask the simple questions like, “How are you liking Noto, Were did you come from, Why’s your last name Higurashi if your dads last name is swan.” Those where the most popular. The Higurashi question was the one they all asked. I went by my moms last name was all that I said. Well that was right, I wasn’t lying.

One girl who was in my trig and Spanish class later introduced her self to me. Asking if I wanted to sit with her and her friends at lunch. I agreed with so much enthusiasm. As if I would pass up the chance to sit with someone and become friends with some people here. We arrived in the cafeteria and I met a few of her friends. I finally had remembered her name was Sango. I met her friends Ayame and Miroku. Miroku was a really nice guy. I got along with him better than the others. Suikotsu later joined us too.

“Miroku, I see you met my home girl Kagome.” He said with enthusiasm.

“Oh your home girl?” Miroku said laughing.

“No my girl.” A boy said from right behind me landing a kiss on my cheek. Then pulling the seat from right under Miroku, making him fall. The boy laughed and Miroku chased after him, everyone in the cafeteria was laughing. I looked down, embarrassed my cheeks flushing. Sango scooted over to me smiling.

“That was Renkotsu.” She said slightly laughing. I didn’t say anything, just keeping my head down.

“Its like first grade all over again, you’re the shiny new toy.” She said with a teasing smile.

I wasn’t paying attention though cause I saw a small group come inside the cafeteria, they were all so…flawless.

“Who are they?” I said still staring.

Ayame turned then smiled. “Those are Dr. Taisho’s foster kids.”

Sango mused. “ Yeah, there all together, like together, together.”

A girl with shiny midnight black hair came through the door passing our way. She had the most beautiful arched eyes, ruby red lips.

“That’s Abi , she’s with that guy.” Sango said pointing towards a tall lean, very built guy with her plastic spoon.

He had dark shadowy arched eyes. They where a perfect aqua color. His hair was very long, formed into a braid. It went perfect with his jet black hair.
“That’s Bankotsu.” Ayame finished.

I stared at them as they sat down. Another pair pasted by. Ayame continued without me having to ask.

“The guy with the evil look, that’s Sesshomaru.” He did look rather, evil as Ayame had put it. His eyes were thin, golden brown color. His hair was strangely a silver color. It shined like the moon on a cloudless night. He was very tall, and lean.

“His hair is just like that they say.” Sango said reading my face. “Albino maybe…or part, something like that.” Ayame said guessing.

“The girl he’s with is really weird, her names Rin.” Sango continued.

The girl named Rin was pretty. She was very short, a petite form. Large Chocolate brown eyes , flawless face. Small arched nose. Big redeeming smile across her face.

I stared back at them. I went to look down though when I figured I had stared long enough. That’s when “he” walked in. I looked up and my mouth went agape. He had the same silver hair. Almond shaped eyes, but a little bit larger. A golden color. Flawless pale skin. I kept starting like a total idiot, but I couldn’t look away. Never had he looked my way though.

“Who is he?!” I whispered loudly. Sango already knew who I was talking about. Tall and gorgeous over there is Inuyasha. Don’t waste your time though, apparently none of the girls here are good enough for him.” “Like I care.” She said picking at her food.

“Yeah don’t even think about it.” Ayame added.

I looked back at the table. I wondered when he had let down Sango. Obviously she cared somewhat. He looked at me for a few seconds with an almost angry look, no it was more confused not satisfied kind of look.

“Wasn’t even thinking of it.” I mumbled right before I turned around.

My next class was biology with Mr. Varner. Biology was pretty easy, but I wasn’t exactly looking forward to it. When I walked in I saw the angel himself looking my way with a perplexed look. I smiled slightly until I passed the fan to give my slip to Mr. Varner. He suddenly went rigid in his seat. He almost completely froze. I frowned. After that I learned I would have to sit next to him. No other seat in the class was open. I sat down looking his way. I didn’t like to stare, but it was just almost impossible. His eyes were a black…coal black. I could have sworn that they where a golden brown color.

He was staring at me almost with a look of hatred. Ok so it was the look of hatred. Suddenly the phrase if looks could kill crossed my mind. I sniffed my hair, it smelt like strawberries. My favorite shampoo. That seemed innocent enough. So it wasn’t my smell then. What was it? Why would he hate me so much? Maybe I was wrong, maybe it was something that happened before I came to class. That would have to be it. I was a total stranger. It seemed insane to have such a dislike for someone you don’t even know. As the hour of class passed on, he still kept glaring at me every so often. His hand was clenched into a fist at the side of him. Was it just me or was this class going on and on? Or maybe I was just waiting for his fist to loosen.

It never did. When the bell rang he was out the door before anyone was out of there seat. It amazed me at how fluidly he walked. Almost graceful for someone in such a hurry. I didn’t understand. Miroku came right up to me as I gathered my things to leave.

“So did you stab Inuyasha with a pencil or something?” He asked.

I looked up. So I wasn’t the only one who noticed. This wasn’t his normal behavior. I was still so bewildered as to why he could have such a dislike for me. An innocent new kid. I decided to play dumb.

“Was that the guy sitting next to me?”

“Yeah.” “He seemed in pain or something.”

I shrugged. Miroku went on talking about things I wasn’t sure about. I wasn’t really paying attention. As we walked out of the class down the hall he asked what class I had. I had told him gym. He seemed surprised and happy since he had gym next period too. It couldn’t be that much of a coincident for us both to have gym this period, in a school this small. I didn’t like gym. Back in Tokyo, physical ed was only required for two years. Here it was mandatory all four years. Noto was my own personal hell.

Gym was horrible. We played volleyball, and I had ended up hitting just about five girls, and at least two boys. One being Miroku. I told them not to let me play, but coach Clapp was persistent, saying that I should give it a try. You cant be that bad Kagome! Where his exact words, and if he was actually paying attention right now instead of flirting with the other girl coach he would know right now how wrong he was.

I had always been a clumsy person. Witch was why this sport, or any sport for that matter I was very bad at. I was always strange though. For one I was very pale for a person who lived in sunny Tokyo. So pale I think I could be seen through. My hair was dark as the night, my mom had called it. Long and wavy. To the mid of my back to be exact. My eyes where almond shaped yet round, a simple brown color. I wasn’t all that special. At all. I sighed as we were sent to the locker room to get dressed. As soon as I was out I left. I was supposed to go to the front office, to return the paper I had been given this morning for my teachers to sign.

I walked in, ready to hear the lady at the front ask how my day was. Stupid questions I would give lying answers to. I was never a good lire, but maybe she would be convinced.

As I walked in…there he was. The boy known as Inuyasha. He was talking to the lady at the front desk with such a beautiful velvety voice, like music to my ears.

“There has to be something open, anything at all.” His deep musical voiced fought.

The lady who had curly hair and funny round rimmed glasses was sweating under his beautiful gaze.

“Sir, I um…I’m sorry, there’s no openings.” She looked down almost ashamed as she searched through an open large book, probably class schedules or something.

“You’ll have to stay in biology.”

He turned slowly looking my way, his eyes still so black. He seemed stiff, but he managed to turn around and reply to the lady.

“I see there’s nothing that can be done.”

Then he was off. He zoomed past me almost instantly. I turned around. Fuming, how could this guy be so mean? I didn’t even know him! My eyes where beginning to get teary, for some reason when I was mad I cried. It just couldn’t be helped. I turned around angry and dropped off the slip to the desk. “How was your first day dear?”

“Fine.” I said staring her in the eye. Almost daring her to ask more. She seemed to get my message and just smiled. She look unconvinced though. I quickly left without another word. I was glad to be the only one left in the parking lot. I didn’t want my noisy truck I loved so much to attract attention. I drove off fighting the tears all the way back home.
