Twist of Fate
Chapter 2: Something is wrong with this Company
The next morning, Kagome sat at her desk typing the finishing touches on the merger agreement. InuYasha stepped off of the elevator and strolled over to her desk. She glanced up from her work and let her eyes slowly drift up his well-toned form. He was wearing a pair of silver slacks, a white button down dress shirt, and a simmering silver tie. His long black hair was pulled into a ponytail behind his back. When her eyes reached his golden orbs, she watched as a smirk spread across his face.
She stood up immediately and bowed. God this was embarrassing, she could feel the heat rising on her face as she stood back up and once again locked gazes with him.
"Mr. Aka I presume. Please take a seat sir. I shall inform Mr. Noir that you have arrived. Unfortunately, he's in the middle of a meeting. So it will be a while before he can see you."
"That's ok. I don't wish to interrupt him." InuYasha had noticed the way she had admired him. He had to admit that she was cute. He moved off to the left and took a seat on one of the couches. He leaned forward and examined the coffee table for any good reading material.
`Damn, nothing but business magazines. No sports, newspaper, or anything. Shoot, I'd settle for a fishing magazine.'
He sighed and leaned back. After a few minutes, he stood up and walked back up to the secretary's desk.
"Um, excuse me."
Kagome looked up.
"Please tell me that you have something to read besides those business magazines." He pointed to the coffee table to illustrate his point.
She glanced at the table. She wasn't supposed to do this, but he had asked. She opened drawer on the lower right hand side of her desk. She took out a few files that were lying on the top. She then motioned to a stack of manga and comic books.
"I'm not supposed to do this, but this is my private stash. I usually give them to kids who are forced to come here by their parents. I don't know if you'll be interested in any of these, but it's better than business stuff. Take what you want, just don't forget to give them back to me when you're finished."
InuYasha knelt down and sifted through the stash. He smiled as he picked out a few. He muttered thanks as he stood up and walked back to the couch. About an hour later, the office door opened and out walked two males. They both muttered a greeting to the secretary and walked over to the door leading to the stairs and quickly disappeared. Moments later a tall man wearing a black business suit stepped out of the office and glanced at his secretary before letting his gaze drift to InuYasha.
"Ah, Mr. Aka. I'm ready to see you now."
InuYasha was still engrossed in the manga he was currently reading, but he regretfully closed the book and stood up. He placed the reading material on Kagome's desk as he passed it and glanced at Mr. Noir. The older man looked totally livid. What was he so mad about? InuYasha stopped in front of Mr. Noir and extended his right hand.
"Nice to finally meet you face to face, Mr. Noir."
Mr. Noir clasped hands with InuYasha and gave him a short shake before breaking the contact and ushering the young man inside his office.
"Go have a seat and make yourself at home. I'll be with you in a moment."
InuYasha nodded and started walking in the direction of Mr. Noir's desk. He turned around slightly alarmed when he heard the door closed leaving him alone. Curiosity got the better of him and he drifted back toward the door. He didn't have to press his ear to the door to hear the conversation going on in the lobby.
"What did I tell you about those idiotic excuses of reading material that you have?"
"Not to give them to your guests unless they were kids."
"So, why was Mr. Aka reading that stuff?"
"He asked if there was anything else to read besides business magazines."
"Then the correct answer should have been no."
"But he was board."
"It doesn't matter. That type of material is not allowed in this area. I suggest you take it all home with you tonight. Don't let me catch you with it again. Is that understood?"
"Y… Yes sir."
"Good. And don't think you're getting off easy. I'll finish with you after my appointment."
InuYasha bolted away from the door and with the speed only a demon could produce he jolted down the long rectangular room. He took a seat in front of the desk and set to looking board and irritated. Mr. Noir walked in a moment later and strolled to his desk.
"Sorry about that. Being the boss means setting your employees straight. Know what I mean?"
InuYasha just smiled and shook his head yes.
"Yeah, well, where did we leave off on the phone the other day?" He took his seat and leaned back, placing his hands in front of his chest with his fingers interlocking and thumbs rubbing together.
About an hour and a half later, InuYasha strolled out of the office and walked to the elevator. He pressed the button and waited patiently for the elevators arrival. He heard the secretary's phone ring and listened intently to her conversation.
"Yes sir…. Yes…. No…. Yes, sir."
Her last comment made InuYasha curious. She had dropped her voice a few decibels and sounded sad. He heard her move around and a door open and then close. He glanced to the desk behind him and glanced around to find himself alone. The elevator beeped open and InuYasha decided to take the stairs instead. He disappeared behind the door, but kept it opened a crack as he watched Mr. Noir exit his office. The older man looked around the lobby, walked to the bathrooms, and disappeared in each one. He came out a few moments later and drifted over to the elevator. InuYasha couldn't tell what that other man was doing, but he soon saw the man turn in his direction.
InuYasha bounded up the stairs and stopped at the top, which was only about two flights up. He heard the door open. There was a short pause before the door closed again. InuYasha waited a few minutes before going back down the stairs. He found the door closed and upon testing the handle, found it locked also. Puzzled, InuYasha walked down the stairs to the seventh floor and walked into the lobby.
The secretary eyed him for a moment before she realized who it was. She was about to stand up when InuYasha walked to the elevator, pressed the button, and waited patiently for the elevator to arrive. Once he got in the elevator, he pressed the button for the eighth floor and was greeted by a hideous voice.
"Sorry. That floor is closed. Please make another selection."
InuYasha growled and tried again only to be met with the same response. After the ninth attempt ended with the same result, he decided that he would go ask security some questions. Whatever Mr. Noir was doing to his secretary couldn't be good and obviously he had done it before. InuYasha figured he would get to the bottom of it, sooner or later. Besides, he didn't have anything else to do and he was good at snooping around.
InuYasha rode back up to the seventh floor some time later. He had asked security some rigorous questions, but the answers they gave did nothing to satisfy the overwhelming dread that had consumed his heart. Something bad was going on up there. He could feel the evil energy radiating from the ceiling. It had made him sick to his stomach, so much that the security was going to rush him to the hospital, but he had managed to cough the feeling down and regain his composure. He didn't like this feeling. The feeling had been the prelude to both his parents' murders. Dear god, that cute girl better be all right.
He had decided to speak with the vice-president of the company in hopes of receiving more answers. He walked out of the elevator and came to stand in front of the secretary's desk. The woman was entirely too bubbly for his tastes. After what seemed like forever, she finished telling him some uninteresting story about some fishing trip she had went on. He finally asked her to set up an appointment for him to speak with Mr. Shiro. She eyed the calendar on her computer before responding that Mr. Shiro had an opening that afternoon after lunch.
InuYasha made the appointment and left. He stepped out of the elevator and glanced at his watch. Good, he was ten minutes early. He caught sight of Mr. Shiro's secretary as she locked gazes with him. She stood up as he made he way over to her desk.
"Mr. Aka, I'm glad you came so early. Has anyone ever told you that your hair is gorgeous? I know hair, so believe me. Have you been growing it all your life? Most people don't think guys should have long hair, but I'm the exception to that. I think you should have your hair as long as you wish. What kind of shampoo do you use?"
InuYasha stood there dumbfounded as the secretary kept rambling on about his hair. Where does she get her energy? A door just to the right of the secretary's desk, opened up. Out walked a tall shapely muscular man. He had on a light blue business suit with a tie that sported an under the sea type theme with Spongebob Square Pants in the middle of the entire thing. It looked rather out of place in the business atmosphere, but InuYasha shrugged it off and continued to study the man before him. His gaze drifted to Mr. Shiro's hair and InuYasha almost fainted. The man had a mohawk that ran straight down the center of his head. To top it off, his hair was white.
InuYasha shook his head and returned his attention to the man. This office didn't seem to be under the same rules as the one above it. Mr. Shiro walked over to his secretary's desk. She was lost in her own little world, still going on about InuYasha's hair.
"Yura, I'm pretty sure Mr. Aka isn't interested in your stories."
She looked like she was about to cry. Mr. Shiro leaned over the desk. He grinned from ear to ear, as he looked her straight in the eye.
"You simply must tell me about your vacation before you leave today. I can't wait to hear about what you did for the past two weeks."
She giggled and shook her head while agreeing to tell him about her entire trip after his last meeting for the day. He winked at her before turning his attention to InuYasha.
"Mr. Aka I presume. I was so surprised and happy that you requested to see me this afternoon. If you would step into my office, we can have a little chat."
He motioned for InuYasha to go inside his office and InuYasha took the lead with Mr. Shiro following close behind. They walked to the back of the room. InuYasha glanced around. This room was very similar to Mr. Noir's office. The only difference was that Mr. Shiro seemed to like decorating. Pictures of different things were hung all around the room. The carpet looked like grass and the ceiling had trees and animals painted on it. It definitely didn't look like a business office. InuYasha took a seat in a rather comfortable looking recliner that was positioned directly in front of Mr. Shiro's desk. A few seconds later, Mr. Shiro took his seat.
"Mr. Shiro…."
"Please call me Ginta. Mr. Shiro is too formal." If it was possible, Ginta's smile grew even wider.
"I agree. Then you may call me InuYasha." The other man nodded and InuYasha returned to his previously interrupted statement. "Ginta, as you may know my company and yours is considering a merger. As the person who will take over ownership of the company, I feel that I should get to know the employee's."
Ginta nodded his head and InuYasha continued. "Is there anything that I should know about this business? Is there anything that strikes you as odd?"
Two hours later, InuYasha stepped onto the elevator and made his way to the first floor. His meeting with Ginta had been a productive one. The spirited man had given InuYasha some insight into the company, but it wasn't as informative as InuYasha had hoped. However, Ginta did state that it was a normal activity for Mr. Noir to block access to his floor off. Apparently, the man did it two to three times a week. This puzzled InuYasha. Why would he block off the entire eighth floor?
Ginta seemed to like Mr. Noir's secretary. What was her name again, Kagome? Ginta had spoken highly of the young lady. She joined their company around five years ago. Mr. Noir hired her on the spot even though she was still working on getting her degree. Ginta advised that of anyone in this company, she would know more about it. However, she seems to be kept on a short leash. Mr. Noir never allows her to talk to people outside the office, besides the few friends that she has.
Ginta had said something that caught InuYasha's complete attention. He was talking about how the entire eighth floor was locked down one day when he really had to talk to Mr. Noir. There was nothing he could do. When his secretary tried to call Kagome, all she got was a message stating the line was down for maintenance. Ordinarily, Ginta would overlook these occurrences, but this particular day, it bothered him to no end. Around closing time, he was in the lobby talking to the security guards about a possible mishap earlier in the day when Kagome walked off the elevator. She seemed to be in pain, but was trying very hard to hide it.
InuYasha shook his head as the elevator came to a stop on the first floor. He stepped off the elevator and strolled through the lobby. He had nothing else planned for the day, so he decided to wait in the lobby till closing time. Hopefully, he could catch Kagome as she was leaving. He really wanted to have a word with her.
Kagome took a deep breath as the elevator came to a stop on the first floor. The workday was finally over. The only thing she wanted to do was go home and lay in a nice hot bath. She adjusted her purse higher on her shoulder as she stepped off the elevator and slowly made her way towards the main entrance to the building. She ran into a solid object and fell back onto the floor. Pain ricochet around her body, but she ignored it as she glanced up to see who or what she had collided with.
InuYasha glanced down at her. He should have stopped her from running into him, but he hadn't been paying attention. He reached a hand out. She trailed her gaze to his hand and back up to his eyes. She reached out and took his hand and he gently yanked her to her feet. A blush crept onto her cheeks and she dropped her gaze to the floor.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to run into you. I should watch where I'm going," she said in a quiet tone.
"Feh! Don't be sorry. It wasn't your fault." It came out harsher than he expected.
She glared at him before she stepped around him and headed toward the doors. He twirled around and grabbed her wrist as she passed him. Her forward momentum was stopped and she glanced back at the man behind her.
"Do you mind? I have stuff I need to do. Let me go."
"I need to talk to you."
"Can it wait till tomorrow? You can always come back here and talk to me in my office."
"That won't do. No privacy." He said the last almost in a whisper.
"Look, I'm flattered and all, but I have a husband. So if you don't mind, I really need to get going."
InuYasha glanced down at her hand that was still trapped in his. Man, this girl was such a bad liar. He trailed his gaze back up to her eyes. "You don't expect me to believe that. Do you?"
"Who do you think you are? My father? It's none of your business if I'm married or not. I don't even know you. You expect me to go somewhere to have a nice private chat with you? You must think I'm crazy."
Amusement danced in his eyes. "Look, I'm not a stocker…"
"Sure that's what they all say." She rolled her eyes.
"Grr, I just want to talk with you. I promise I won't do anything. If I do, you have my permission to kill me. Shoot, I may help you."
Her jaw dropped. Mr. Aka sure was persistent. She glanced around the lobby and saw that there was a crowd beginning to form. She didn't like crowds. No matter how much she liked arguing, she decided to stop this and let him get his way. She returned her attention to him to find him staring at her with giant puppy eyes. She couldn't resist that look. She dropped her head and sighed.
"Fine, I'll talk to you." She yanked her arm and motioned for him to follow her. Once out on the street she turned to him again as she yanked her hand from his grasp. "Let's get one thing straight. Touch me and you die. All it takes is one time. I won't put up with it. Got it?"
He nodded his head. With that, she led him down the street to her apartment.
