Kagome stirred and rolled on to her side; her lungs expanded to suck in the fresh night air while her forearm curled from underneath her bedding, mashing the pillow to her face. Her lashes fluttered against the top of her cheeks before lifting completely, allowing her to focus in on two orbs of dark amber. He was crouched beside her, one arm draped loosely over his knee while his other hand clawed absently at the packed dirt. With the soft glow of the campfire behind him, and the light breeze gently blowing strands of silver-white from his face, he appeared eerily beautiful - something not entirely of this world. "Inuyasha?" she spoke out his name in question even though she knew what he had wanted at this hour of the night… what he had always wanted.

He cupped her cheek lightly, his thumb tenderly stroking the curve of her cheek, careful not to accidentally nick her with his claw. A half smile formed when she leaned into his caress and pressed a kiss at the center of his palm. "I need you," he said quietly.

A dash of red graced her cheeks, adding on to the pink that was warmed by sleeping so close to the fire. Kagome glanced worriedly behind him to ensure that everyone was fast asleep, before nodding and taking his hand. He stood up and she followed, unzipping herself from her sleeping bag. Hand in hand, side by side, they fell into a comfortable silence as he led them away from prying eyes. She never asked where he would lead them, only knowing that they would never be too far away from the camp. They would never be able to forgive themselves if their selfish needs ended up putting their friends in danger.

A spot was chosen and he stopped to scent at the air, his face scrunched up in concentration. She lowered her chin to her chest and fixed her sight on her feet as she waited, the tip of her brown oxford digging into the ground, while her hands scrunched tight at the fabric of her skirt.

It was like this nearly every night, ever since…

`Don't think about it, Kagome!' But her mind refused to forget and her heart refused to let go completely.

She. Was. Dead.

Kikyou, her past self, the rival for Inuyasha's affection was gone, her body destroyed by Naraku's miasma. And she was alive as the dead miko's permanent replacement. Inuyasha would no longer have to choose between them, for she was the only one left. There were no options, only Kagome.

She hadn't been able to comfort him that night since he had run off after hearing rumors of her death. But he came back for her and filled her ears with promises of never leaving her side again.

She so wanted to believe him.

The rest of the gang, even Shippou had stayed away out of respect, giving the hanyou a chance to grieve She had even tried to follow the others, thinking that he hadn't wanted her to be around, since she was a painful reminder of what he had lost, but his hand had shot out to circle her wrist as she was passing by, tugging her gently down to sit beside him.

"Stay with me… I need you."

She nodded and folded her legs under her skirt.

He lowered his head slowly, his long locks brushing against the bare skin of her thighs, sending an unintentional shiver down her spine. And before he was fully settled on her lap, he cast a quick look at her to watch for signs of disapproval, almost like he was expecting her to hit him. Finding none, a small sigh of relief escaped his lips and his body stretched outward, his eyes staring dully off to the side. They didn't talk, but she listened, hearing the quickening of his breath as he tried to hold back his tears, and the sound of his heart breaking.

Her heart broke along with his.

Hot tears that he could not shed spilled forth from the rims of her eyes, rolling downward until they splashed across his cheek, where they were supposed to have originated from the start. She was crying for his pain, for their heartache, and whatever else that was worth crying for. He had lost his love, not once, but twice in his lifetime.

And she was Kikyou's substitute.

Inuyasha lifted a hand hesitantly to the moisture on his face, rubbing a crystal droplet in between his thumb and forefinger before tasting it. His eyes blinked several times in surprise at the saltiness and she felt his body shifting, turning around to face her. He reached up to touch her cheek, carefully wiping the corner of her eye with the pad of his thumb. "You're crying."

She nodded and set her teeth hard on her bottom lip, trying to stop the dam from flowing. He sat up suddenly, one arm braced on a spot beside her so that their noses were nearly touching, and she could clearly see her broken expression in his eyes. Out of nervous habit and inexperience with the opposite sex, she bent backward and supported her weight on shaky arms, hoping to put some room in between them. But her plan backfired, and he followed unrelentingly while his eyes searched deep into hers as though he were seeing past her skin and into the core of her very soul.

He didn't stop moving until their chests were rubbing against each other with every rising breath, and their arms were loosely intertwined together. "Why are you crying?"

Kagome choked back her apprehension and smiled sadly, her hand abandoning its post to keep his shaggy bangs from shielding his eyes. He looked so lost, like a little boy. "Because you're hurting," she whispered and straightened herself so that she was at eye level with him, forcing him back a bit. Fingering a loose strand of a lock that had fallen over his shoulder, she continued, "Because when you hurt… I hurt…"

He inhaled sharply and his eyes grew wide in surprise at her words and the brush of her lips against his forehead, then his cheek. She had meant for it to be innocent, a way for her to comfort her best friend, but soon her lips were raining kisses on the tip of his nose, his chin, the lines of his jaw, anywhere but where she most wanted them to touch. Her mind was screaming for her to stop but her mouth seemed to have a mind of its own, refusing all pleas and reasons. It was like tasting chocolate for the first time; she couldn't stop after just one taste.

Her eyes were tightly squeezed shut while this…this insanity was happening, using only her hands as her guide. She didn't want to see the disgust on his face as she gave into her desire and took advantage of his vulnerability. She never expected for him to respond, never thought that he would want her in return, but he did. He lowered his head, and his lips caught hers as she once again made her way down to the tiny cleft on his chin. Her eyes shot open and she gasped audibly into his mouth, feeling his arms wrapped tight around her, and his lips…

Inuyasha's hand cradled the back of her head as he kissed her tentatively with the very mouth that had insulted her so many times in the past, treating her like she was made of something valuable and fragile. Her mind became hazy and she froze, not knowing how to respond to something she never thought would happen despite the fact that she had been the one to make the first move. Her body, on the other hand, had a pretty good idea of what she was supposed to do, and was already beginning to act on its own accord.

His lips moved once, twice more against her own, before releasing them and moving to the side of her face, his nose nuzzling affectionately while breathing in her scent. "I need you," he whispered into her ear, his heat seeping inside her skin. "Don't ever leave me…"

"Never," she answered as he lowered her slowly to the ground, his body molding into hers, and blades of grass rising tall around them, shielding them from the cruelty of the world. For a brief moment, all she saw were the millions of stars twinkling above them, and then her vision was filled with two glorious suns, darkened with unholy passion. His lips fell upon hers, soft and gentle, but quickly grew to be more demanding as his hands slipped under her clothes and touched her in ways no man had ever done before.

"Never…"

They hadn't discussed the new and sudden addition to their relationship. A dozen questions plagued her mind, but the thought of asking him any of them made her stomach churn and her chest tight with fear. Inuyasha never said he loved her, yet he continued to make love to her. She released the strangled-hold on her skirt and touched her face, wiping at nonexistent tears.

`And I let him.'

During the day, they would act as though nothing had happened. He would resume his role as the immature hanyou with a terrible temper, and she would again become the naïve young miko that she was supposed to be. None of their friends knew of the Kagome who gave herself to Inuyasha night after night, or of the Kagome who let herself be used…

The pain ceased.

Without turning around, she knew that he now stood quietly behind her. His aura always managed to offer her some sort of comfort.

"Kagome…" Inuyasha whispered, his voice raw with insatiable needs, and she felt her hair being swept delicately to the side. His claws ran lightly across her hairline before tracing the line of her throat, making her tremble. She tilted her head in offering and whimpered softly when warm lips descended on the back of her neck. His tongue lapped gently like he was bathing her, and his arms snaked around her waist, crushing her back to his chest. Her eyes slid shut and she slumped forward.

`Because I love him.'

A/N: Yes it's another new story. I've been seeing so many stories where they just hop into bed with no psychological consequences for their action. Going from best friends to lovers is a big deal. Anyway, this one isn't going to be too long, and the next chapter is going to be Inuyasha's POV.

Thanks a bunch to Merith and Niamh for beta reading!
