A breeze blew passed Inuyasha and he smelled her scent again. At first he thought he was imagining things and missing her again just like he has so many other times. Kagome has been on his mind all these years and has lost count as to how many years have passed.
He knew he wasn't imagining anything this time. He heard her soft movement, she was here. He wasn't sure how, but he felt her presence nearby.
Sometimes he still kicked himself over not just turning into a full demon and forgetting about her. But instead he had hid the jewel underground so far that demons were unable to find it. He had hoped that Kagome would somehow find a way back to him if she wanted to. And he knew that if she did he should stay a half demon. He was too ruthless when he was a whole demon and a danger to others.
Inuyasha never wanted to hurt Kagome. He just wanted her to come back to him.
And now he's sure she did.
***********
Kagome felt the warm sun on her face as she slowly opened her eyes. She sat up to get rid of her drowsiness.
Kagome wondered if Inuyasha was still in the tree when she looked over to see amber eyes gazing at her. She thought perhaps she was dreaming like all the other times. Kagome looked at Inuyasha as he sat next to her.
He looked more mature, but not too different. His hair was longer and he was still as handsome as ever in a rugged type of way. Everything about him was the same, from his beautiful honey eyes, to his adorable ears.
But there was a presence about him that was less arrogant than before and now more . . . masculine.
`Is this a dream?' Kagome asked herself. So to test her assumption she whispered, “Inuyasha?”
As Inuyasha sat there cross legged, he stared at the beautiful young woman that Kagome has become. Her shiny black hair was longer and her face was still just as pretty, only . . . she was a woman now.
He could tell things on her body had matured, too. But he didn't feel safe dwelling on that for long. Then her soft lips parted to whisper his name.
Inuyasha's gaze intensified and Kagome was speechless. It was a dream!
“Kagome,” Inuyasha said softly, “I had hoped you'd come back.”
“You did?”
“Yeah.”
There was an awkward pause.
Kagome wasn't sure what to say to him.
“It's been a long time,” she finally came up with.
He scratched his head. “I know. How did you get back? Did you find the jewel?”
“Yeah, actually. I work for this place that allows me to examine things from the past. But I was still surprised to find it.” Kagome frowned. “Although I probably won't have a job when I go back home.”
Inuyasha tensed. “You're gong back?”
Did Kagome notice a ring of discontent in his voice? She desperately hoped he cared as she did. “Do I have a choice?”
He looked uncertain than sighed. “No, I guess not.”
Not the answer Kagome had hoped for. She looked away before he seen her sadness.
“Listen, Kagome, while you're here let's go somewhere safe. I don't want any demons sensing the jewel.” Inuyasha helped Kagome load up her supplies. They walked down a dirt path.
“Hey, Inuyasha?”
“Hmm?”
“Have you seen Sango, Shippo, or Miroku?”
“Nah, but I heard Miroku married Sango since his wind tunnel disappeared. He's wasn't so eager to have children with every woman he met anymore.”
Kagome was glad to hear that they married. They always showed ardent interest in each other. “What about Shippo?”
“That little doofus? He found some of his fox family out East, he comes to visit once and a while.”
“So, what have you been up to, Inuyasha?”
“Me? Nothing much. Just hung around here making sure Naraku wasn't going to come back.”
“But . . .” Kagome knew she shouldn't re-open old wounds but she had to know. “Why didn't you use the jewel to become a demon like you had always planned?”
He stayed silent and Kagome wondered if he was going to answer.
Finally he spoke, his voice surprisingly harsh, “I just decided not to, okay? Drop it.”
Kagome didn't respond. She felt angry and understanding at the same time.
After walking a short while Inuyasha found a small cave for the two of them to dwell in.
“This will have to do for tonight. I won't be able to protect you once night hits, so it's better to stay hidden.”
Kagome didn't question him, nor realize what he was talking about. After getting some food out of her bag, the two of them sat right outside the cave. Kagome made Inuyasha some roman's and for once he didn't scarf them down like there's no tomorrow.
He looked pensive.
“Is something wrong, Inuyasha?”
He met her gaze with his gold topaz eyes. “It just feels so strange now that you're finally back.”
“How so?”
“It's just been a long time is all. It took a lot of time getting used to not seeing you anymore.” It looked as though he wanted to say more, but he stayed quiet while they ate. Night was quickly descending and the evening air grew cold. Inuyasha unexpectedly stood up and walked into a nearby forest before Kagome had a chance to question him. She knew he'd be back so she watched the sunset alone.
**********
It was dark by the time Inuyasha came back. There wasn't much light, except for the stars. It was a new moon, so it wasn't visible by gazing at the sky.
Inuyasha kept his head down as he walked toward Kagome, but she could still see his hair was no longer shiny silver, but a midnight black.
Of course! Kagome should have remembered that Inuyasha turns human on the new moon. And that's when Kagome has always secretly thought he looked beautiful. Kagome didn't think the word `beautiful' could describe a male, but in a rugged sort of way Inuyasha was just that: beautiful, when human or only half human.
Inuyasha walked passed Kagome without even glancing her way. She sensed that he was angry at something, she was just unsure at what. “Inuyasha? Is something wrong?”
He looked up, his now dark, obscure eyes angry. “Of course something's wrong, damn it! Look at me! I'm a measly human.”
“Inuyasha, don't worry about that. Being human doesn't make you weak; in fact sometimes you seem your strongest when you're human.”
He turned from her, “Keh.”
“No, I mean it. Look at me, Inuyasha.” Inuyasha grudgingly relinquished and looked at her. “I like you just the way you are,” Kagome said knowing it wasn't the first time she made it known. “Besides,” she told him with a smile, “I don't think humans are all that bad, I am human after all.”
Inuyasha's eyes softened immensely. “But I can't protect you when I'm like this, Kagome. If anything ever happened to you . . . I don't know what I'd do.”
They held gazes for a moment. Kagome unable to look away from his enticing face wanted to tell him how much he meant to her, and how much she loved him. “Inuyasha,” she whispered softly.
He turned away suddenly. “We'd better get inside the cave, it's late.” Reluctantly Kagome followed, her words of love left unspoken.
***********
Inside the cave it was cold and dark; the only dim light came from the fire Inuyasha had made outside. He sat near the entrance of the cave with his back leaning against the hard wall. Kagome hade her sleeping bag rolled out ready for sleep. She was going to lay down when she realized Inuyasha still wore the enchanted beads that had allowed her to keep him and his temper cogent.
Kagome knew he no longer needed to wear it now that he gained her trust. Kagome wondered why he hadn't asked her to remove it before she went back home six year ago since she's the only one who can remove them.
She crept close to Inuyasha and sat down next to him. He glanced at her with a quizzical expression. “Would you like me to take these beads off?” Kagome asked rubbing her forefinger over the beads.
He shook his head silently, his mood still solemn. Then he said, “They've kind of grown on me. I wouldn't feel the same without them.” He glanced away, not opening himself up like Kagome wished he would.
Kagome found herself very surprised. Years ago she knew Inuyasha would jump at the chance to get those beads off. So what's changed? Could she be right that he has grown in so many ways? And he has in fact grown up in most? Kagome thought so.
It touched Kagome's heart to think that there was more to it than the fact that he'd feel different without the beads. Kagome was about to go back to her sleeping bag when something shiny resting inside Inuyasha's kimono caught her eye.
While Inuyasha still gazed outside the cave, Kagome reached in and grabbed it from where it rested against his chest. She recognized the necklace instantly. The golden heart locket held a picture of them on each side. They had taken the photos in a photo booth back in her era one of the times he came to get her to bring her back to the past with him.
Kagome had given it to Inuyasha telling him it would make his wishes come true. But he had refused it, calling her a liar and telling her he wouldn't be caught dead with something like that.
But Kagome had seen it on his neck soon afterward. The fact that he still wore it brought tears to her eyes. Inuyasha finally looked at her when he felt her holding the locket. “You're crying, Kagome. Why?”
She couldn't hold back any longer and threw herself against him, hugging him fiercely. “Oh, Inuyasha,” she whispered never wanting to let go. The last time she hugged him it was out of despair of never seeing him again. Now she hugged him from joy. Joy that after six years she's finally here with him again. Even if it was to be only temporary.
Kagome relished in his nearness, and it felt wonderful. Kagome felt Inuyasha hug her back and she sighed. Inuyasha to her was the air that she breathes and she has been suffocating for the past six years, longing for a breath of fresh air.
Hoping for a chance with Inuyasha again, dreaming of his voice, touch, and presence has been hauntingly painful.
Oh how she's missed him. Kagome pulled back just enough to meet Inuyasha's Opaque human eyes. He met here stare with soft fervor and Kagome never wanted to look away. He stayed unmoving not in invitation or rejection.
Staring at Inuyasha in his human form made Kagome's heart beat faster and her breath caught. His human features were mysterious and angelic, as though he was a fallen dark angel.
His raven hair shimmered in what little fire light was left. His dark eyes watched Kagome with keen and alluring interest. Kagome slowly leaned in, meeting her lips to his in a soft but chaste kiss. It wasn't their first, but Kagome knew this time neither of them would deny that they both wanted it.
His lips were warm and smooth. It was a meeting of the lips, nothing more. Kagome didn't want to push it, or shock him. She whispered a `goodnight' and pulled out of his embrace. She went to lie in her sleeping bag leaving a bewildered Inuyasha sitting near the entrance of the cave.
Kagome began drifting to sleep thinking that she made the first move, now it was up to Inuyasha to join the game.
