Kagome and Inuyasha found Shippo crouching on the ground in the forest nearby. Kagome's first thought was that Shippo was injured, but as she and Inuyasha neared she could see him holding something small and grey.
She kneeled down next to Shippo and gasped. In his hand he held a bird which clearly had a broken wing. Shippo looked up at her, tears brimming in his eyes.
“Some of us were playing, we didn't even see the bird . . .” Shippo sniffled and stared down at the helpless bird in his hand.
Inuyasha scoffed and rolled his eyes walking away from them both as Shippo went into detail of what happened. He walked deep into the forest and found a tall tree. He took a huge leap onto the highest branch with out any effort at all. Leaning back against the hard bark of the tree, Inuyasha felt nothing but numbness.
Damn Shippo!
Inuyasha stared into the distance at the blaring sun. He could still smell Kagome's scent all over him. It was driving him mad. He longed for her, needed her with every fiber of his being. He needed to make her his, body, mind, heart, and soul.
He needed Kagome as his mate, he needed her . . . for life.
“Shit,” he muttered to himself, shifting his weight on the thick tree branch. Since when did he become so damn emotional? But he knew the answer to that. It all started when a fifteen year old girl with raven black hair and deep brown eyes freed him from the tree of ages.
Inuyasha leaned his head back against the solid wood of the tree and sighed deeply. She had accepted him he was sure of it. If only that damn Shippo hadn't . . .
Inuyasha made a mental note to rough the little doofus up later. He closed his eyes for a moment, allowing his memories to surge through the flood gates of his mind. The feel of Kagome's skin, the passionate look in her eyes as he touched her, her zealous responses to his kisses . . .
`What? . . . Tell me what you want, Kagome.'
`You. I want you.'

The next two weeks passed slowly. Inuyasha hadn't spent hardly any time with Kagome, as she had spent most of her time with Shippo tending to that damn bird. She had helped Shippo bandage its wings and Inuyasha sat by and watched being practically ignored.
He rested on a patch of grass and watched as Kagome took the bandage off the small bird's wing.
“Are you sure it's healed, Kagome?” Shippo asked nervously. Kagome smiled softly as she held the small, helpless bird in her hand.
“I'm sure, Shippo.” Finally unraveling the last piece of bandage, Kagome set the chirping bird into Shippo's hand. Shippo's eyes filled with tears. Kagome scooted closer to him.
“What's wrong, Shippo?” Kagome could tell Shippo was trying his hardest not to shed tears.
“It's just that . . . I wish I could keep him. I really wish he could be my friend forever, Kagome.” Shippo's voice broke as he stared at the bird in his hand.
Kagome placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Shippo dear, I . . .” Kagome sighed. What could she say to make him feel better? Keeping a wild animal caged was no way to show it your love. “Shippo, there's a saying, and it goes: `If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it's yours forever.'”
Shippo looked up, hope in his eyes. “Is that true?”
Kagome smiled and nodded once. “Yep.” She stood with Shippo. “C'mon.”
They walked to a small clearing. Inuyasha just sat and watched so quiet and pensive like.
Kagome laid a hand on Shippo's shoulder. “You ready?”
He stared down at the bird for a long moment, than smiled. He threw his hands up in the air and let go of his hold on the bird. The bird spread its wings and began flapping them vividly, it flew around Shippo and Kagome, causing Kagome to giggle and Shippo to chuckle boyishly.
It was as though the bird was thanking them before flying off into the sky, disappearing from their sight into the high cerulean.
“You're free . . .” Shippo whispered to the sky.
Kagome smiled wistfully, than turned and hugged Shippo tightly to her.
***********
Kagome hummed softly to herself as she washed her clothes in the river. It was a warm day. The sky was as blue as could be, with out a cloud in sight. A light, pleasant wind flowed comfortably, rustling leaves, flowing across the plush grass making it dance.
Kagome's long, dark hair lifted and flowed in the air every time the wind would embrace her. It made her feel so refreshed and revised, it felt amazing.
Kagome wrung the cold, fresh river water from her clothes. She was about to stand when she heard footsteps. Turning quickly, she found it wasn't who she was hoping to see at that moment. It was a person she did not want to see at all.
Katana meandered over to her with pretentious ease. Kagome rolled her eyes and turned away from her. She stared ahead, her expression one of angered boredom as she wrung her clothes with unnecessary vigor.
Katana plopped down next to Kagome uninvited. Kagome tossed her clothes aside and turned to Katana quickly.
“Alright, what the hell do you want?”
Katana looked a little taken back by Kagome's outburst, but it didn't seem to faze her for long. She giggled. “What? To women can't enjoy a little girl talk?”
Kagome arched a brow in Katana's direction. Katana smiled innocently, well as innocently as an adamant vixen could anyway.
“What's going on Katana? Really?” Kagome demanded as her patience hung by a thread.
Sighing happily, Katana let herself fall back onto the lush grass. She stared up at the sky whimsically. “Have you ever been in love, Kagome?”
Kagome was going to reply, but thought better of it.
Katana went on none the less. “He's amazing. His face, his voice, his touch. The things he says, the way he says them. I don't know how to explain it, but it's as though I've searched my whole life for him though I didn't even know it. How I fell for him so quickly I just don't know. But I don't know how I got along with out him this whole time, and I could never imagine life with out him from now on. He's my everything . . . I love him. I feel with out him, I would perish . . .”
Katana finally broke out of her own little world and looked at Kagome with her wide green eyes that held the innocence of new found love. “Do you know what I mean, Kagome?”
Looking away, Kagome stared at the flowing river. She tried not to release the tears that threatened her emotional sanity. “Yes, I do.”
Katana sighed again. To Kagome's ears it sounded like a sigh of a woman in love. Kagome swiped quickly at the tears that leaked from the corners of her eyes and cleared her throat. She looked Katana. “So, who's the lucky guy?”
Katana giggled girlishly. “His name is Masurao. And oh, Kagome, he's amazing! He loves me, he treats me like I'm the only woman on this earth. Like I'm the only one for him.” She looked to Kagome, tears glistening in her eyes. “He's never been in love, Kagome, he told me. At first he said I scared him for the feelings I was causing him to feel. I was so afraid it was a bad thing. That he wouldn't want to feel those things. But he accepted them . . .” A tear fell from Katana's eye. “He accepted me . . . as I am . . .”
Kagome had no idea that Katana was so insecure. She sure hadn't acted like it. Kagome smiled. But it sounded like this Masurao was really good for her. Kagome was no longer angry at Katana for wanting Inuyasha, for it's obvious she found exactly what she was looking for in the right person. Kagome was happy for Katana that things were in such good prospective in her love life. Kagome wished she could be so lucky.
Kagome sat with Katana a while longer while she spoke of her special someone. Katana no longer spoke like a brazen vixen in heat . . . but as a woman. A woman in love.
Kagome envied her open ability to speak of it, to know where she was headed in her love life. For Kagome and Inuyasha's situation, it wasn't that simple . . .
***********
Dusk began to settle comfortably in the air. Kagome took a walk away from camp. She had visited with Shippo for a while and enjoyed an early dinner with him (not that she ate much for her mood diminished her appetite). But she hadn't seen Inuyasha in all day. She was disappointed and relieved at the same time. So she had decided to take a walk. She sat under a large tree allowing it to remind her of her first encounter with Inuyasha. Kagome laughed softly to herself, remembering how she couldn't help but feel Inuyasha's ears when she had found him pinned to the tree asleep.
And what a jerk he was for the longest time . . . she laughed to herself again. He's still a jerk, but she understands him better. She understands that with love you must take the bad with the good. Kagome felt extremely weary all of a sudden so she laid down on the cushioned grass resting her head on her arm for a pillow.
She could see the sky through the spaces of leaves above her. It was getting darker by the moment, but Kagome felt too content to care. She thought of how much she envied Katana, not because she found Masurao, but because they were in the kind of love that was okay to be voiced.
As with her and Inuyasha, if there was even love on his part, it was almost too taboo to mention. Kagome's heart began to ache for it felt as thought it would explode from all the unspoken love it held for Inuyasha.
Wanting to block out that feeling, Kagome allowed herself to drift to into sleep. She was so deeply asleep that she didn't know dark descended, nor did she feel herself being lifted by two strong arms and cradled against a broad chest. Nor her being carried back into camp and tucked into her sleeping bag.
And even though she was in the deepest of sleeps, the kiss that was placed on her lips stayed with her though out the night.

A/N: ok, first let me say that `Masurao' is a Japanese word that I came across and thought would be perfect for Katana's guy. One group of definitions for the word says it means: `hero, gentleman, warrior, and manly person'. I chose this word for his name, because though it was Katana speaking of her guy in the story, the words were actually mine about someone who is very special to me. He's my `Masurao' and I love him so very much!
So thanx for readin'. I hope you don't mind doing some reviewing even though this chappie is a bit short and uneventful. Feedback is always appreciated, especially when it's positive ^_~ hehehe
