As I look at his slumbering figure next to mine, I can't help but feel overwhelmed and content, all at once. His face shows no sign of distress and I feel as if though I am looking at a man with no burden on his shoulders. One that did not live the hard life that became of him.
His gentle breathing comforts me. Maybe it's because I know that I am able to stare at him without being caught, or maybe it's because I know that he is here, safe with me.
My greedy eyes take in every ounce of him. One arm tucked underneath the pillow while the other lies underneath the cover. His back shows his beautifully toned muscles as the moonlight dances across it; and the midnight tresses cascading down his back, bleeding into my contrasting white comforter. His dark lashes and pouty lips call my attention and I am tempted to run my finger across them to test their softness.
But I know they are soft. I now know that those lips are a taunting paradox. Their gentle and tender caresses on my skin that made my whole body burn with passion I did not know existed.
And now I am left glancing at the man who now looks completely innocent and is soundly sleeping next to me; our naked bodies slightly touching giving off immense heat for this late autumn night.
My thoughts begin to wander, and I am reminded of this journey of how this man came to be in my bed.
A man that holds my entire heart and soul completely,
A man that may never want to see me again once dawn breaks.
How will I ever explain this to him, without losing him forever?
***************************************************************** ****
It had been a magnificent fall. The ginger and amber leaves seemed to float endlessly as they cascaded their way down from the trees. The light breeze carried them in every direction giving off a magical atmosphere. We had decided to follow a lead on a shard three villages away and the weather seemed like a great invitation.
We made our way down the familiar dirt road that would lead us to this village deeply nestled in the mountains. I had decided on not taking my bike and instead take in the clean air; something I did not have the luxury of in my time. The day seemed to be going off well, our group all conversed among each other and we even managed to get Inuyasha to join in every once in a while; although he did have a habit of bouncing off ahead to “scout the perimeter”. Night descended on us quickly that night and after much begging to the grumpy hanyou, we were able to set up camp near a hot spring.
Perhaps if we hadn't been so engrossed in each other, we would have noticed that as the night dragged deeper the shadows seemed to grow and the chirps seemed less frequent.
We decided to call it night so that we could get an early start the next day, as Inuyasha put it, “the quicker we get to the shard the quicker we can get back home and away from this creepy place.”
After much threatening from Sango, Miroku had promised to not try anything indecent on the deadly exterminator in exchange for closer sleeping arrangements. Shippo had curled up with Sango in order to “protect her” incase the Houshi had attempted anything. But once Shippo's head landed on Kiara he was out faster than you could say Tesiaga.
I had mixed feelings about this new sleeping arrangement. I had grown so accustomed to Shippo's curled up next to me, but this could change was awkwardly as I lay in my sleeping bag, the campfire long died out. I glance over to check on my irritable companion and discover his sitting on the tree branch looking as alert as ever with a death grip on his father's fang.
“Inuyasha?”
I receive no response and the ears on the top of the head twitch apprehensively searching for some unknown foe.
“Are you okay? Did you hear something?” I asked, the uneasiness in my voice finding its way to the open.
“Feh. It's nothin' go back to sleep.” His voice confident but the grip on his fang seemed to tighten considerably.
I instantly find my way out of my sleeping bag and grab my bow and arrows. “Inuyasha what is it? A demon?”
His eyes narrowed as he jumped down. “I don't know yet, I can't tell but my nose tells me something's definitely out there.”
I closed my eyes searching for the auras around us. “I don't feel-.” Suddenly I felt a tremendous evil aura; what was worse was the fact that it was directly in front of us and very close.
I turned to our protector, “Inuyasha, it's here, there's an evil spirit standing over there.” I point towards the aura, and I heard Inuyasha let out a growl as he drew his sword.
“Show yourself you coward!” he shouted into the darkness; meanwhile Sango and Miroku had already awoken and were on their feet.
A shrill laughter rang out into the night, followed by a menacing voice. “My dear half-demon, I am not a coward, I was merely debating about how long it would take your pathetic senses to find me. And now I know, if it hadn't been for your feeble wench, you may never have discovered me.”
A figure came out of the darkness; dark hair seemed to surge around a feminine figure. As it approached, it was clear it was a woman, and by the robes she wore she appeared to be a priestess. Her eyes reflected no light and their depths were endless. Her hair bellowed around her as her eyes changed and flashed red before a miasma of darkness flowed out from her.
“Kagome get back!” Inuyasha shouted as he drew his sword at the figure. “You're going down!” He lunged at the figure but she seemed to only glide away from his advance. A blue barrier suddenly appeared around her and Inuyasha and suddenly he stopped moving and froze.
“What the hell did you do to me you bitch!” He tried desperately to move but his body didn't obey and he was left at the mercy of the demon. She glided closer to him and when she was a foot away, she extended her hand as her nails suddenly became claws.
“Inuyasha no!” I shouted, I couldn't just leave him there in danger. I approached the barrier and when I placed my hand on it I felt a very familiar aura around it…..Naraku.
“I told you to get the hell out of here damnit listen to me!”
Before he could throw another threat the figure had plunged her claws into his chest. He had received much worse wounds and injuries, but this one seemed to leave him in the greatest of pain. I shot an arrow at the barrier and it disappeared so I quickly aimed another at the demon. It hit her arm that was currently in Inuyasha. She hissed as the purification arrow suddenly started disintegrating her body. “It's too late you wench, your hanyou will soon die.” The miasma suddenly returned and the demon quickly retreated.
I ran the rest of the way to Inuyasha, he seemed to have difficulty breathing and he was sweating pretty badly. “Inuyasha?” before I could say another word he started falling to the ground, I tried my best to catch him but when he fell on me we both ended up on the ground.
Miroku and Sango came to us with Kiarra ready to take Inuyasha to Kaede.
“You know Kagome, if I didn't know any better I'd say you're rather comfortable.” The lecherous monk said as he helped Sango lift Inuyasha from my body.
“Miroku now is not the time, I think Inuyasha's been poisoned and to make matters worse, it was Naraku who did it.”
They both looked over at me and I took in a deep breath ready to explain the situation. “The demon's barrier felt extremely like Naraku and when she first attacked the miasma was the same as his too. We have to get him to Kaede immediately because if Naraku sent her we can't take her lightly.”
They both nodded and we all boarded Kiarra and took off for Kaede's. We arrived in record time and once we had briefed Kaede she quickly started attending to Inuyasha's wounds asking us to step outside as she worked. It became clear that Kaede's delay was not due to her diligence, but because something was not right.
As I was about to enter the hut, I was met with the elder priestess, and her stern look only made me feel queasy. “I need to speak to all of you.”
We all entered the hut quietly, my first priority to find Inuyasha, although I was not prepared to find him in the condition that I did. He lay in the western corner, and as I approached I noticed two things, the first that he was in his human form and the second that he appeared to be in great pain.
I placed my hand on his forehead and only grew more worried that he seemed to have a fever. He was no longer in his fire rat robe or under shirt and the white bandages around his chest were already seeping with his blood.
I turned to the priestess, not bothering to hide my emotion, “Kaede what is wrong with him? It's not a new moon tonight and his wounds cannot heal quickly.”
“Aye, this I know child. It appears that Inuyasha has been poisoned.”
“Poisoned?” was the collection of echoes spread in the tiny hut.
“Aye, I heard of this poison long ago. This type of poison was used to kill demons, because once in the demon's body, it attacks their blood. Never had I heard of it used to kill a hanyou, for it is a horrible death. His body is already reacting to the poison, his demon blood has somehow laid dormant to fight off the poison.”
I had felt the tears but I refused to show my weakness, although everyone knew that Inuyasha was my not only my strength, but my greatest weakness.
I was thankful that the monk asked my next question “Is there a cure Lady Kaede?”
The troubled priestess looked towards the hanyou before meeting my gaze. “There is a possibility we can still save him, although we it will be very difficult.”
“Kaede you know that we would do anything for him.” I was surprised at how strong and sure my voice was, despite the fear I felt in every pore of my body.
The old priestess nodded her head before crossing both arms behind her back and made her way to her herbs. “Alright then, the first thing we will need to do is gather a lunar herb that is north of the Fuji Mountain. It has not been found for many years but very few take the risk of searching.”
“Lady Kaede, leave that to Sango and I, we will take Kiarra and not return without it.” Miroku looked towards Sango both nodding in determination.
“The next task falls unto you Kagome.”
“Yes, anything.”
“Inuyasha is going to be very fragile for many weeks, I have a feeling that his demon blood will resurface only to go dormant again. But as we know he is vulnerable and wreck less as a human and should probably not be here. After all Naraku wanted him human because he thought he had a better chance to kill him. He many not like it, but I think it is best to take Inuyasha to your era.”
Being a bit skeptical I did not think that he would so eager to go along with this plan. Knowing him he would be pissed he was poisoned and go straight for Naraku, even as a human.
“What else does the plan entail Kaede?” Sango asked giving me a reassuring smile that I desperately needed.
“Once we have the lunar herbs we must wait until the next full moon. Like a lunar cycle Inuyasha's blood changes, he is weakest at a new moon but strongest, because of his demon blood, at a full moon. On the next full moon we will treat him with herbs to help aid him fight the poison and if he doesn't appear to be winning the battle, Kagome will purify him.”
“WHAT?” I instantly felt bed for yelling at the elder, but how in the world did she expect me to purify him without completely taking all of his demonic side?
“Kaede is that even possible to accomplish without making him a human?”
“It is my theory that once she purifies him his demonic blood will simply go dormant until it regenerates itself, but after that he should return to normal in a matter of hours. Kagome will simply have to train and keep her aura pure so that she can perform this task.”
Shippo jumped from Miroku's shoulder onto mine as he asked, “Kaede why can't you purify him?”
“Child I cannot perform such tasks, besides Inuyasha must be willing to accept the purification because if he fights it could be disastrous. Kagome is the only one he trusts enough to do this.”
I couldn't help but blush at her last comment, her gaze only seemed to make my face grow hotter and as I tried to look away for salvation I was met with the most intense gaze of violet. Inuyasha was not sitting up looking at me with the most unreadable expression I had ever seen. I managed to push my embarrassment aside as I ran to his side.
“Are you feeling any better?” I again pressed my hand to his forehead and was relieved to find that his fever had broken. “Well at least your fever has past.” I retrieved more bandages from the back of Kaede's hut, desperate to distance myself from the knowing looks on my friend's faces. Braving the wolves I took a deep breath before returning to Inuyasha's side. I immediately began removing his older bandages not giving a thought to everyone in the room who had oddly stopped talking as soon as I got closer.
“I need to find some supplies for ye, you will need them on your trip.” Kaede said as she exited the hut in a slow fashion.
“Sango and I will leave at daybreak, and Shippo will stay here with Kaede to help out. If you need us we will be sleeping outside.” I looked over my shoulder to tell them to be careful when I saw the lecherous monk giving me a wink and I instantly knew I'd been had.
The uncomfortable silence did nothing to help my “aura”. Here I was, alone in a room with a half naked Inuyasha on a futon, and I was practically on top of him. My aura was shot to hell if I couldn't keep my thoughts pure. So I decided to change the subject in my head.
“So how much did you hear?”
I applied first aid anointment from my bag waiting for a reply. “Everything.”
His voice was softer, and there was no smartass comment meaning to it. Then I realized that he was “human” Inuyasha. True he had never been a human for long, but when he was he generally wasn't as brash, or rude and was easier to get along with.
I tied the knots on the bandages a bit too tight as I saw him grimace. “I'm sorry, let me loosen them.” When my hand reached the knot his reached mind and held it. I was lost. That was the only way to describe the feeling I felt at that moment. Completely, lost.
His hand over mine now resting on his chest our eyes locked onto each other, and his eyes with an intensity that made me feel as if I should turn around and run. And maybe I would have if he wasn't holding onto my hand. I don't know how long we stayed there the way we did, I only know that when Shippo came bouncing back in pulled away a bit too quickly.
“What's wrong Shippo?” I ask jumping to my feet.
“Nothin, Kaede just told me that she's going to be at Hoshiko's hut tonight because she's thinks she's going into labor. And that there's a spare futon in the back for you because Inuyasha's gauzes need to be changed constantly and you should keep a very close eye on him,” he winked when he was sure Inuyasha wasn't looking as he once again quickly bounced out of the hut.
Oh how in the world was I supposed to keep my aura pure now? Well, maybe it wouldn't hurt; I mean the next full moon was still a month away. Laying out the futon I saw Inuyasha begin to look around room,
“Your sword is in my bag.”
He looked at me, and I was grateful that this time the intensity was not there. He started standing probably to retrieve his sword when he grunted and began falling over. Trying to catch him I ended up tripping on the futon and taking us both down with me taking most of the fall.
I couldn't help but think Inuyasha had gained weight. All humor aside I quickly became concerned but before I could inquire he beat me to it.
“Are you alright Kagome?” Boy did this man have a heart of gold.
“Me? I should be asking you that.” We somehow managed to get him back to his futon and I quickly found his sword and gave it to him, knowing that it was his security blanket. Deciding that I needed to be close I set up my futon next to his and prayed that Miroku didn't check in on them in the morning.
Morning couldn't come quick enough.
Leaving only one candle on in the hut, directly above their heads, I made sure Inuyasha was tucked in before turning in myself. I was disappointed and relieved to find that he was already asleep. Brushing the bangs from his face I allowed myself a glance before turning in praying for daybreak.
