Chapter One: When Harry Met Sally
I didn't know it back then, but it all started with underage drinking…
It was during my winter vacation that I spent at home in California that I began my transformation. I was a sophomore and going to college in New England, and I was spending my very last weekend at home. Too bad for my mother that I would be spending it with a college friend, Sango.
Sango was a nontraditional student at my college, meaning that she was finishing up her degree after taking a hiatus in her schooling. She never did enjoy talking about those years that she was away, but I do know that it involved quite a few deaths in her family and trying to support herself after using all of the life insurance money she received to pay off loans and mortgages her father had and thought were easier to not mention to her. Regardless, she was one of the toughest women I knew and darn smart one too!
I love it when I rhyme.
That morning I woke up to my beautiful white comforter and the smell of sausage coming from the heating vent. Mom was cooking. I hurried out of bed to quench my morning hunger.
“Good morning Mama. What's this? Sausage? What are we celebrating?” I asked. She really preferred to make quick meals in the morning after all.
“Ha, believe it or not, but I made this for you!” Now this was a surprise. She was a great mother, but she usually saved her good cooking for when company came.
I smiled as I forced a piece of sausage and egg in my mouth. “You remember I'm hanging out with Sango tonight, right?”
“Sweetie, please chew smaller bites. And yes, I remember. Tell Sango to keep you safe! I don't want something happening to my little girl.” I slumped my shoulders, “Don't worry mama. OK.” I said as I quickly forced three mouthfuls of food in, “I gotta go shower!”
I suppose my mother was protective of me, but I think it was because she was compensating for the daughter whom she couldn't protect anymore. You see, I have sister. Kikyo is five years older than me, and she endured probably the toughest times this family had seen. When I was five years old my father died in a car crash, leaving just my mother, sister, and I in this world. My mother was heartbroken. Their love was intense; I really think that she couldn't identity with herself now that my dad was gone forever. She didn't handle the death well. She was emotionally unstable and this left a lot of the responsibility to Kikyo, who was only 10 years old at the time. I understand that it was hard for her. I mean she did basically raise me, and I am eternally grateful, but once Mom did get things together, she had already lost all respect and love for our mother.
Kikyo was a teenager, and she hated our mother. Once she turned 18, she left home and swore to never come back. Since she did raise me, she was practically my mother, so she still kept in touch with me. However, as I grew older, we grew distant as well. I loved and love her so much, but she saw so much of my mother in me and eventually she couldn't bare to talk to me either.
Now having lost both a father and a sister, it was really just me and my mom.
I got out of the shower and dried my wavy hair. For tonight I think I would go for sexy casual. I chose a black bra that shaped my breasts perfectly.
“Nothing boosts the old self-esteem like perky peckers!” I smiled at myself. Then I threw on an old t-shirt and jeans that complimented my behind. If I was going to a bar, I was definitely going to look my sexiest.
Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention. Sweet ol' Sango decided that the event for the night would be meeting all her high school buddies at bar downtown. There were two real problems here. First, I hate socializing with strangers. I would really rather get drunk with one familiar face, then fifteen odd looking ones. Next, I was twenty years old and, darn, without a fake ID. Let's hope Sango had the means to get me in. The only thing worse than being forced to go to a bar to mingle with people I didn't know, was to be denied access getting into said bar. Hence, the sexy bra.
I made it to Sango's house in the city, and knocked on the door. “Loooooooveeerrrr, I'm here!” I did love to embarrass her in front of the neighbors. Too bad this was San Francisco. I all I got were adoring looks as I serenaded my lover. She opened the door, and with a huge smile pulled me into a strong hug.
“I am so happy you're letting me introduce you to my high school friends! But please try to be a little social. I know you have it in you!”
“Come on, I know that I gripe about meeting people, but I definitely can pull off a pleasant smile and conversation.” In truth, I would only go through meeting a huge group of people like this for Sango. “By the way, how am I even getting in? You know I don't have a fake ID.”
“No problem, my friends know the bouncer, plus I hear they're suckers for a sweet smile,” Sango said with a wink.
“AH, now that we both know have an uncanny talent for.” I really have to thank my brilliant orthodontist for the smile that can get me anything…well almost.
“Ok, sweets, you ready?” That was really a more loaded question that Sango even realized.
Once we reached the bar, I followed Sango's lead. Together we just stood awkwardly in front of the door two feet away from the bouncer and then stupidly walked away. “Sango!” I said through gritted teeth, “where are your friends?!” My fear of rejection was definitely surfacing. “Sorry! My friends aren't where they said they'd be! They were supposed to be right at the door. Hold on.” She got out her cell phone and I tried to look 21 as she dialed. Ten seconds later, two people emerged from the bar.
“You must be Kagome,” the man in a green zip-up hoodie said. “I'm Josh, and this is Kira.” The lady, who was just introduced to me, gave me a warm smile and said hi, and I became a little less nervous about meeting the friends who I believed knew a part of Sango that I never got the change to see in action.
“Let's go on inside, it's a little cold out here!” Kira said jerking her head in the direction of the bar. Quick and to point! I liked Kira already.
Now here was the tricky part: getting past the bouncer. First Josh and Kira went in and then Sango, and as I gathered my nerves, I smiled at the bouncer as I walked in, and luckily….he smiled back! Thank you Dr. Fu and your way with neck gear! Once inside, I already had a feeling things weren't going to be as uncomfortable as I thought it would be. We got to the counter, and Sango got me a beer. While I've had alcohol before, I really never liked beer. Too bad that's all they served. Sango handed me the mug and started telling me about all the adventures she had with her friends in high school. I was really grateful she thought I was important enough to her that she wanted to share this with me.
I couldn't hear them too well because of the crowd surrounding the counter, so we all moved to a more private back room where more of Sango's friends where. It was a big reunion, I guess.
I walked in into the small dimly lit back room, and my eyes directly landed on the most handsome man I've ever seen. I swear, my jaw must have dropped, because Sango took my arm and lead me to this man who was standing with a dark-haired man.
“Miroku! I thought this was a high school reunion, but didn't you drop out? Having a fling with a teacher and then catching crabs really did make it tough on you to finish out that last semester” Yikes! Who would be stupid enough to get on Sango's bad side? I tuned my head to the man who caught my attention earlier and noticed his unshocked expression.
“Sango, my sweet. You look lovely! Ah, and you brought another gorgeous lady with you.” Miroku sure didn't understand when to back down.
“Hi. I'm Kagome, I go to school with Sango out east.” I felt the handsome mans' eyes on me, and my throat began to feel very dry and heavy at the same time. He had the deepest eyes. I couldn't look away as he stared directly at me. He wore a navy blue zip-up with dark jeans and black loafers. He had moist tempting lips…perfectly full, and I found myself staring. A few moments must have passed, and I suppose Miroku must have noticed something as he quickly introduced me, “This serious-looking guy is Inuyasha. We used to be roommates here in the city.”
“Ah, please Miroku, don't try to sound so metropolitan!” Sango berated as she rolled her eyes. She really did not care for this man. I would hear the details about this later; that was for sure. Sango paused for a bit as she took notice of my eye contact with Inuyasha. I guess Sango must have noticed something too, because she thankfully discreetly lead Miroku away from the two of us and continued her list of never-ending slights a good three feet away to give us some privacy.
It was definitely awkward at first considering Sango did just leave me with a stranger to mingle. And God, did hate mingling, but there was something to incredibly intense about standing next to Inuyasha. I've never been one to be easily moved by a good-looking guy, so I felt a bit inexperienced in what to do next.
Inuyasha had a funny expression as well, and I really could not what he was thinking. Was he uncomfortable? Anxious? Queasy?! I thought I would try one of my life-saving smiles. “My name's Kagome.”
“You said that.” Color tinged my cheeks as I realized I just repeated myself. Why was I feeling so inarticulate at that particular moment!?
“So, you go to school in the east with Sango? I used to live there.” I relaxed as he made the first move to begin a conversation. “Really, are you from New England?” I noticed his strong chest through his zip-up…I wondered if he had a happy trail…bad kagome…..
“Well, I grew up in New York.” He seemed a little less tense as well. The way he stood just emanated how strong and solid he was. “Sango and I actually go to school in Massachusetts. Go Minutemen!” Oh I felt like such an idiot. Inuyasha chuckled, and looked down. He tilted his head and said between sipping his beer “I used to live in Boston, I was part of the symphony there for a year before landing a job in San Francisco.”
“You're a musician?” Ohhh, I liked this guy already. Sexy, dark hair, and with a musical talent. “What do you play?”
“Actually, I'm a classical percussionist.” Lord knows I had no idea what that meant, but I nodded my head regardless. “Then you're relatively knew to this area then?” I asked. I so wanted to give a Kagome-style tour. With a pleased look on his face he told me “well I have done a bit of exploring in the area. I actually stayed in a bunker not far from the city, just a ways up north.” I thought this guy must appreciate a good adventure. I knew exactly how to handle this best.
Inuyasha glanced toward the couches lining the room, and asked “hey, you want to sit down?” I liked the idea of sitting down with only Inuyasha rather than walking around the room making small talk with a huge group, so I happily accepted the invitation.
I crossed my legs on the leather sofa, took a few more sips and relaxed a bit. I had a feeling Inuyasha was just as eager to avoid massive crowds as I was, and luck would have it that we both enjoyed thrilling adventures.
“I think I know that bunker.” I conveniently left out that I stayed there during a science field trip in the 5th grade…didn't want to lose my street cred after all. With the same smile that took hold of his beautiful mouth, I said “You know, if you like exploring I know this great spot where you can see the entire bay area. It's a bit difficult getting there, but it's worth it.” I truly did love searching for these secret paradises in our own backyard.
He looked at me with interest in eyes and asked “What's the place?” “It's the top of a mountain that borders the sea. I went there once at night, and I swear I've never seen so many shooting stars….nor have I been more terrified of getting caught by the people who live out there! I heard they keep shot guns!” I said with a laugh. “This place is actually on private property,” I explained. Inuyasha relaxed his posture a bit and leaned in closer to me.
“Well, maybe next time you can show me this place. After being in my share of tight spots, I think I know how to keep people safe.” At this point, I didn't even realize it but our bodies had gravitated so close to each other that I could feel the head emanating from his hands. Maybe it was the warm sensations the alcohol was giving me or maybe it was my giddiness, but at that moment I really just wanted to hug the man. Wrap my arms around him and just hug this adventure-loving, classical percussionist, San Franciscan MAN.
But I held myself back, and just said “next time I'm in town I'll take you up on that.”
We talked for a while longer and he bought be two more beers. He told me about his work, traveling, his adventures. I felt after just a little while talking to this guy that I'd known him for a long time. After a bit, Sango came back to introduce me to some of her other friends. Meeting everyone was great, and I think I really did learn about the part of Sango that I never met. On the way out, I said goodbye to Inuyasha, he shook my hand twice—once when I thought we were leaving, and then a second time when we actually left. I was a little tipsy at this point, and I imagine he was too. With that second handshake, I leaned in and indulged myself with a quick hug and kiss on the cheek. When I came out of the hug, I could see a little color tinge his cheeks. I'm just imagine it wasn't the alcohol.
He was a little shy, and I liked that. As we left the bar, I found it difficult not to watch him as I walked away, and I caught him watching me as we left. I think that the best part was just as we exited the bar, he dropped his mug allowing the glass to break with a clang.
Just then I said to Sango with a smile, “I love guys with an awkward side to them.”
Knowing exactly who and what I was talking about, she remarked “too bad we'll be three thousand miles away from the country's best for another semester.
Too bad indeed…
