Chapter 3: The Meeting
That week passed much too slow for me. Class lectures seemed to repeat themselves, the nights seemed to last for days, and at one point, I believe I saw the clock go back a minute.
My mind was consumed by Inuyasha, and I felt that this was not an entirely healthy behavior. My mind wandered as I lay on my carpet on my back staring at the patterns in the ceiling. Most of the boys I met, were just that: boys. They whined about having to be responsible, they made offensive and unsuccessful jokes, and they had a distinct scent that was all too pungent for me. Inuyasha was different…he smelled like…he smelled like…like strength, and knowing, and sex, and dreams, and adventure, and all the things that made my excitement gather and solidify into a growing knot weighing down my throat.
Inuyasha did not say much that night I met him, but he revealed enough to make me know that there was a story that I needed to hear and needed to be part of. I had never experienced such a feeling before, and I knew that I could not ignore it.
Which was why I was staring at my ceiling and counting the seconds till his arrival. I did not know what he had in mind for our meeting, but I was already jumping the gun and assuming this was more than just “casual,” like he said. At least, I enjoyed believing that it was more that just that.
It was finally Friday, and all I had to do was sit through two lectures and I could prepare for meeting Inuyasha. His plane came in at 4PM, and he said that he would take the train over after checking in to his hotel. I got up from the floor and set out for class. Time would finally let me have my day…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I survived my first lecture, and as I sat down in the hall waiting for the professor to arrive for my second lecture, I felt someone squeeze in front of me to take the seat to my right. I looked up and saw Kouga smiling coolly at me.
“Hey Kagome.” I gave him a light smile, and greeted him. “I hear there's a party at Booker's tonight. There's supposed to be keg…you want to go?” Kouga really was nice, but I just wasn't into his whole cool guy act. It seemed too well-practiced, and I just preferred sincere guys. “Sorry, last time I went to a keg-party with you, you force-fed me one too many beers!” Plus, he was a huge drinker. “Can't say you didn't earn that mess I made on your shoes,” I added with a smirk. “That was one time! Come on, we'd have fun. Plus…,” Kouga added with an all too practiced shy smile, “I've been dying to take you out again.” It was flattering, but I would have enjoyed it more if he stayed at least partially sober when we hung out. Too bad for Kouga.
“Sorry Kouga, but I actually have plans for tonight.” And I just left it at that. Kouga opened his mouth probably to ask who I had plans with, but he was prevented as the lights dimmed to allow the professor's power point presentation appear on the projection screen.
Class ended and I managed to make it out of class without having to tell Kouga my plans for that night. While I walked back to my apartment, Sango called. “Kagome! Are you ready yet? He's coming soon isn't he?” How very characteristic of Sango to make sure I was on top of things. “It's only 4PM, so his plane just landed. I have about two hours to get ready before he gets here,” I reported back. “Good. Before he shows up, make sure you come by my place. I want to give you something.” I neared my building and said, “Sure thing. I'll see you soon.”
I jogged up the stairs leading to my floor and opened the door quickly to my apartment. I had two hours, and being one who took her time getting ready, this was just enough time to shower, apply make-up, style hair, and choose an outfit with great detail and consideration and make it look like I hadn't. After showering, I put on light make-up and wore my hair wavy and loose. Now here was the tricky part: choosing something to wear.
I had to choose something practical for what I had planned for the night, so I chose something incredibly casual but complimenting: a pair of one of my favorite jeans, a comfortable bra and matching black panty, a graphic t-shirt, and finally a yellow zip-up hoodie under a black winter down jacket. I looked at myself in my body-length mirror, “definitely not date attire, but I think he'll understand once the evening begins!” I put on one last coat of clear lip gloss and headed over to Sango's like she had asked.
“Sango!” I called to her as I entered her apartment.
“Kagome, wait there. I just want to quickly give you something.” I heard her looking for something in her bedroom dresser, but I stood at her entryway patiently. She hurried over, and looked at me seriously. “I want you to have a great time tonight. I didn't say it that night, but I haven't seen you look that starry-eyed…well…EVER! And just in case…” She left her sentence incomplete as she took my eyes and closed them over something in plastic wrap. I looked down and I must have turn three different shades of red. It was a condom.
“Sango! I only just met the guy! I don't think I'll be needing this, really!” I knew I looked Inuyasha, but at that point, I hadn't thought about having sex with him, well at least not seriously…
“I know, and this isn't a suggestion to go devirginize yourself with the first cute guy you see,” I blushed again at that, “but I don't want you to forget to be safe!” She was right…as always. “Ok, fine. I'll take it, but I am NOT having sex tonight. It's too soon, and he did say he wanted to hang out “casually.” He probably just wants company before he auditions.”
“Ok, ok, well I've said my piece. Now get out of here. You've got to meet him at the train station!” I jumped when I saw the clock; his train would be arriving 10 minutes!
Without another word, I ran out of Sango's apartment and headed toward the station. I really needed to work on my time management.
“Oh, nooooo. I'm gonna be all sweaty when he sees me!” I thought to myself as I jogged over. Thank goodness for the cold winter air. It kept me glisten-free by the time I reached the correct platform. His train arrived right as I came in, and I held my breath as I saw the passengers emerge from their cars. I saw Inuyasha come out, and noticed his dark jeans, dark orange cashmere sweater, and brown winter coat. He looked better than the first time I saw him and I felt a shiver go down my spine. I don't think it was because of the cold.
“Inuyasha!” I called out to him with a wave. He smiled at me, walked over, and quickly enveloped me in a tight hug. I was surprised at first, but I quickly melted into the embrace to see it end much too soon. “How was the ride over?” I asked as we headed out of the station.
“It was good. It's been a while since I've experienced a Massachusetts winter,” he added with a grin. “But I got to tell you, I'm actually starving. You think we could get a bite to eat?” I had already packed us some sandwiches I got from my favorite place in town, so I replied, “I have dinner covered, but we can eat once I take you somewhere.” I knew it was probably impolite to keep his empty stomach waiting, but I couldn't help myself. “Ok, I can wait. But don't think that you'll be leading the adventure for the night! I got something already planned.”
“What makes you think I have an adventure planned? I was just going to take me to my favorite restaurant so you could buy me dinner!” I joked. “Cute,” he said with a slightly amused tone. I led him to this forest that was on college property. We were right about to go in when he said, “exactly what do you have planned?” with a suspicious look. “Nothing too dangerous…don't worry, plus there's a special treat at the end.” I did not add a hidden connotation to that last remark, but I heard him chuckle regardless. I gathered his mind was not completely innocent.
We walked on into the forest, and I was glad to see that we could hike in the woods even if the sun was going down. “We're almost there,” I said. I stopped at the stop of a small hill surrounded by trees, and the sound of trickling water could be hear over out slightly labored breathing.
“Is there a stream somewhere around here?” Inuyasha asked as he spied around. I lowered myself to sit and said, “look down.” We sat at the top of a small stream going downhill that overlooked the valley.
“I like to come here at night. You can see for miles into the valley…” I set my gaze on the beautiful town lights and I felt Inuyasha kneel to sit with me. A few moments passed and all that could be heard was the light whistle of wind and the trickle of the stream.
“This isn't weird is it?” Inuyasha asked suddenly. I gave him a questioning look. “I know we only met once, but I enjoy talking to you. You know very few people can make an impression on me. Plus, in my life time, I've known very few women who would prefer to spend their time looking for hidden treasure like this…” I smiled at that.
“Don't' worry. This is not weird, and I'm glad you're here. Surprisingly, I know very few people who would come with me to a place like this. I guess they prefer a heated room to sub-freezing temperatures.” He chuckled and paused for a moment.
“…Kagome…do you, do you have a boyfriend?” At this, I looked, really looked at him. I looked at the shadows the moonlight cast on his neck, the strong lines of his jaw, the curve of his lips, the winter glow on his cheeks, and finally his deep amber eyes.
“No,” I almost whispered. “I don't have a boyfriend.” His eyes seemed to come closer, and I dropped my gaze to those pouty lips that I've wanted to feel since the first time I'd met him.
I felt his lips on me making slow movements, as if he were savoring the feeling and memorizing the taste of me. I sighed as he lightly trailed his teeth across my bottom lip and felt his hand come to the side of my face and caress my wavy locks. I needed to taste him. Feel him. I put my hand to his neck and worked my way to the base of his neck and played with the hair there. He moaned quietly, and I took the opportunity to taste him. The kiss was becoming heated, and I began to feel a little less cold in the winter air.
I felt his hand drop from my face to my shoulder, my back, and then the curve of my breast, and I was suddenly awakened to our current state. We were both breathing heavily and I was almost lying on the ground with Inuyasha covering me. Never in my life had I allowed myself to move this quickly and I became scared. Scared of what I could have allowed myself to do.
Inuyasha sensed my hesitation, and stopped himself from continuing. We both stood very still with our bodies barely touching for a few moments trying to gather ourselves as our quick breaths mingled. He pulled away and seemed to be thinking very seriously while I attempted to garner some self-restraint and make limits for myself. I knew enough to see how well I connected to Inuyasha and how much I was already finding myself attracted to him, and this foreign feeling was utterly frightening.
“Kagome, I took things to quickly. I'm sorry.” He looked as though I might vanish in the air before him. I licked my lips unconsciously. “Don't be sorry. It was a little fast, but I'm just as at fault as you are…I probably should have said this before, but Inuyasha, I really like you.” I feel the color rush to my cheeks, and I looked at his expression for his reaction. I immediately relaxed when I found his perfect smile. “I should have said something before. I was so uneasy after I left the bar that night. I didn't know if I would ever SEE you again!” I was so happy at this moment. I wasn't alone in my very irrational emotions, and we were being completely straightforward about what we both felt. I can't remember a time when I had been more bold, but I felt relieved once we finally revealed what we both truly felt.
“Come on. I want to show you something…” Inuyasha got up and grabbed my hand to help me up. I threw a suspicious look his way, and he laughed. “I told you that I would be leading the adventure tonight…” I grabbed the bag of sandwiches I'd been carrying with me. Looks like we forgot about eating these…
Inuyasha stopped for a moment. He looked at the sky, the valley, and then the forest. I wondered to myself, “does he know where he's going?” Without further hesitation, he took my hand and helped me into area not carved out with a trail. There was more brush here, and it was difficult to walk…luckily he held my hand tightly as he lead the way.
“You know, they always say you shouldn't stray from the trails…” I said worriedly.
“Well what they don't know, won't hurt them. And don't worry, I know what I'm doing.” I was having some trouble stepping through a bush that Inuyasha was already on the other side of. He tugged me gently, and I stumbled over. I looked up and saw the greatest hidden oasis I had ever discovered. There laid an old wooden shack with a narrow roof with half of its shingles missing. There was a wood pile to the side, and a very rusty looking swing set adjacent to the front door.
“What IS this place?!” I smiled wide over this treasure Inuyasha led me to. “I told you I would be leading the adventure tonight…” He grinned, utterly pleased with himself. I stepped forward checking out the barely standing one room structure through a very dusty window, and directed a look filled with excitement and confusion his way.
“Well, are you gonna tell me how you KNEW about this place?! I've been up here tons of times, and I've NEVER seen it…” He really did top my spot, and I needed to know just how he did it!
“I mentioned I spent some time here, right? Well my mother lived around here, and whenever I visited when I little, me and my brother would come out here. One time we were playing…or rather he was beating me up….when we found this little place. We kept our little secret.” Inuyasha walked toward the swing set and took a seat on one of the swings.
“You never mentioned that you have a brother. What his name?” I made my way over to the swing, and waited for his response swaying while I sat.
“His name is Sesshoumaru, but we actually don't speak very much. In fact, we don't even like each other very much!” Right then would have been the opportunity to mention my own sibling, but I just couldn't find the strength to talk about her. I knew I could have just mentioned her name, but I whenever I did think about her, I became so overwhelmed with out history. Instead of making myself suffer unnecessarily, I bit my tongue and contemplated what it must have been like to discover this place as a child.
“Do you know what it is?” I asked Inuyasha. “I don't know for sure, but I always imagined it was a safe house or something. There are some matches and dried fruits in glass jars inside. But the wood is really warped inside. I don't think it's been in use for at least 100 years.” I looked up at the sky, and watched the twinkling lights. “SHOOT!” I sprung up!
“What is it?!” Inuyasha jumped looking alarmed. “I think you just missed the last train out of here…..” A guilty expression took over my face. Inuyasha chuckled and relaxed.
“Warn me before you jump up like that! I was ready to start running! You know wild animals could be anywhere!”
“But your train…” I worried my lip and checked my watch. It was already 11PM. “Don't worry, my audition is only in the afternoon tomorrow. Plus, I can take a taxi back.”
“Stay with me.” It was more of a demand rather than a suggestion. “Wha-, Kagome that's ok, really…” He started. “No, really! I have extra sheets, and I live right by the station. It's the least I can do after keeping you for so long.” Besides, I thought to myself, this would be a treat for me too.
Inuyasha had a worried expression, and then it warped into a suspicious one, but after a few moments contemplating he said, “Ok. Ok, I'll stay with you. But I'll catch the first train out!” I thought to myself then that he said that more to himself than to me.
Inuyasha wanted to leave some kind of mark on the place; I suppose to commemorate our expedition there. He walked over to a tree that held the swing and carved the date into the bark with his keys. “There,” he backed away from the tree to admire his handy work. “Ready to go?” he asked, and I nodded. The walk back was a little challenging since the moonlight wasn't able to shine three the thick forest canopy, but we made it back alright.
We finally made it back to my apartment complex, and I was a bit nervous. I had never had a guy over. In fact, I'd only had Sango over at that time. I walked slowly up the stairs to my floor with Inuyasha following behind me, probably thinking the same things I was while we climbed.
“This is it!” I said a little more loudly that I had intended. I opened the door and just as I was about to walk in, Inuyasha took my arm and held me from going in.
“Kagome, I want you to know that I don't have many friends!” Ooooo….K. I suddenly feared what I had gotten myself into. A look of frustration took over Inuyasha's face. “That's not what I meant…what I mean is that I'm very picky about who I do allow to be my friends, and even more picky when it comes to…”he let his words trail off. “Anyway, I like you, really like you…but I don't want to take any wrong steps.” I wasn't understanding what he was really trying to say, but instead of interrupting, I let him continue. “You don't even know how old I am, or how I got your number, and why I'm even here—” I stopped him before he could continue.
“Inuyasha, I know we just met, but what does that matter? I've known some people for years and I still don't like them, and then there are those few who just get you from the beginning without having to do anything uncharacteristic. I know all I need to, and, Inuyasha…I like you.”
He lowered his head and took a step to close the gap between us. “why?” he breathed out. His face was inches away from mine. “It just feels…” I timidly pulled on his short through his open jacket bringing him closer, “right.” His lips were one mine and I felt a burning heat once I felt him. I wrapped my hands around him under his jacket, trying to get closer to skin, while he had one hand under my shirt brushing his fingers across my hip and the other to my chin angling my head to his pleasure.
Inyasha trailed kisses from my mouth to my jaw line and then nestled himself in the juncture of my neck nipping and kissing... “Inuyasha…” I sighed. His hand traveled higher under my shirt teasing the skin there, and all I could do was gasp at the arousing torture he was subjecting me to while he coaxed me inside my apartment…
