§ Hi, and welcome to my first fanfic! I hope to make this into a full-fledged story, but I have no clue how many chapters will be put in. WARNING: May include angst, mild romance, and definite comedy. Read, review, and enjoy!!
P.S. By the way, this is an Inu/Kag, Mir/San. At least if Sango and Miroku can get along.... I wouldn't have it any other way!
DISCLAIMER: I do not own Inuyasha or any of its characters, but the St'aler are mine!! Shakes fist at lawyers

§ Unexpected Alliances §
A colossal storm brewed over the wilds. The trees swayed and buckled under the unrelenting winds of the west, some falling dangerously close to a small castle. Freezing rain picked at the worn tiles sheltering the roof. Lightning streaked over the mess, illuminating a long-forgotten garden nestled in the centre of the courtyard. Yet, no harm would come to the occupants within.
Barriers prevented the ferocious storm from destroying the flimsy home, just as they protected the demons inside from his mortal enemies in the world. One eyed the impending storm through a closed window, smiling as the outbursts of wind toppled the outside forests. Yes, he thought, through this alliance, I am forever protected from the enemies who hunt me down.
Satisfied with his work, the demon waved his hand over a black orb sitting on a stand near him. The storm instantly quieted, spreading an eerie silence over the castle. Gently picking up the sphere, he handed it to a nearby companion.
"Must be careful with that," the demon grunted, placing it as if it were a baby in the other demon's arms. "You drop it, and the entire world will be destroyed, and not even you will survive."
The other grinned, and placed the sphere into a waiting bag. "I am impressed, friend. This is beyond what I had requested of you."
The first demon snorted, and knelt back to the floor. "It's not so easy," he said. "There are three requirements the user must meet before a St'aler can be used."
"Such as..."
"First, the magic the sphere creates will only work if it is within five miles of a major body of water, such as a lake. It needs the water to manipulate a rainstorm." The demon looked warily at his companion. "That should be easy enough."
"Second, the St'aler needs a power source. Such an old artifact as this requires the most powerful source available. A living soul, and not one that has already been departed from its body."
"That's not a problem."
"But the third requirement makes it one. The user whom controls the St'aler must be pure of heart, their hands clean of innocent blood."
Books toppled to the floor as the demon scrambled to get back, away from the energy flame the other had created. The figure brightened the flame, rotating it visibly in his palm.
"That is a problem," whispered the man, watching the flame dance about his hand.
"Should you steal the soul I need to complete my task, that would violate the third requirement, and you would not be able to control the St'aler for me."
"What about you, my lord. Is it possible that I could teach you to work the St'aler?"
"Hn. Come now, my friend. We both know that I would have infracted on that requirement years ago. My hands are stained with that kind of blood."
The man flicked his hand, and the sphere of energy howled past the demon's face, hitting a stack of papers behind. They burst into a fiery flame, and the demon was thrown to the other's feet.
"Problem, indeed," whispered the man. "I wish not for others to know of this. Should my enemies learn, my task will have failed utterly." He turned to the cowering demon. "Find a way. That is an order. Should you fail, your life is at my mercy."
Sliding the door closed, the man stepped into the garden. Only massive puddles surrounding the long-dead beds signaled there had ever been a storm.
"Just wait, Inuyasha. I'll turn you to my will yet."
