Chapter 1: painful experiance
“But miss. Taylor! I don't understand! How could I have gotten pick if I didn't sign any forms?!” I ranted storming from one end of the tiny office to the next. “I have never in my life seen those sheets! Let alone signed them!” I gestured towards the papers that lay on her desk. Miss. Taylor watched me with wary eyes. Probably afraid I'll trash the office. Yeah, like I'd have the guts.
“ Now Meghan, there's nothing to get worked up over, you'll only be there for a year. And your signature is on the forms, so you had to have seen them. Be logical.”
I groaned and slumped into a chair. This totally could not be happening to me! Yeah, I dreamed it would but not now! Never now. Miss. Taylor cleared her throat. Like a judge with a gavel, sentencing me to a life of regret. She had that look on, the look she gives the guys who skateboard through the school and send them home. She wouldn't dare! My eyes widen in shock.
“YOU WOULDN'T!” I cry.
“I would, you have three hours before I'm driving you to the airport, with or without your luggage.” She said in her stern voice. She stood up and, for a fleeting second, I thought I saw pity in her eyes, but she left the room, closing the door behind her, before I could find something to say.
I stumbled out of her office, bumping into several office staff before I managed to find the door and push my way towards my awaiting friends.
They all pounced on me at once.
“ so?! What did she want?” Amanda demanded. I stared.
“ did you get on the honor roll? Because that is something to be called to the office about…” ally said smirking. I blinked at her.
“ did you get in the exchange program?” Kai asked, his face split in a wide grin when he saw the look on my face, “ ah, I see you did.” He held up his hands in that smug -boy way guys have, “ don't thank me all at once, I want to saver this moment”
I was in complete shock. Kai had signed me up? No. way. There is no freaking way!
“WHAT?!”
I poked him in the chest pushing him a step back, “ how could you?! Do you know how this could ruin my life? You had no right!” I yelled at him. He winced and took a step back. I took a step forward. “ do you know how much this costs?! My moms going to go into a coma when she hears this!” the side of his mouth curved up, “ I'm paying for it in full, I even have a credit card for you.” He said staring at me like I'm a ticking time bomb that he just cut the red wire out of. “ you know how rich my parents are.” He said it like it was the end of the argument. I wasn't so ready to give up. “ I'm going to JAPAN! I can't speak JAPANESE!!!” I scream at him. This time he really did smile. He dug into his back pack and pulled out a English/Japanese dictionary, “ here, you'll need it.”
Ally snickered and Amanda frowned. I glared at Kai then sighed, snatching the book from his hands I hit him on the head. Satisfied with the smack that resounded down the halls I stormed down the hallway towards my locker.
After a rushed goodbye to my family, a quick and badly done pack of my stuff, alone with another argument with Kai, including taking the credit card. A horrid car ride with Miss. Taylor in her smoke filled car, I was finally sitting in the waiting room, waiting for the plane to arrive. Only to realize that I had brought my walk-man with out batteries, I was about to explode. Either with tears or anger, take your pick.
“hi!”
My head shot up from glaring at my walk-man, demanding it to work with the power of my brain. Oooooh! A guy! A nice looking guy actually. Black hair a thin face, broad shoulders, woah….
“ um…hey…?” I say shyly.
He sits down beside me, resting his huge backpack upon the ground next to him. He held out his hand, “ I saw you sitting alone and figured you wouldn't mind some company. I'm matt by the way” she said grinning.
I shook his hand but released it quickly, afraid that he was some player trying to score before a long flight, “ um….hello, I'm meghan, pleased to meet you”
He smiled and looked me up and down. I became self conscious, which happens a lot unfortunately. He grinned and adjusted his ball cap, “ nice suit!”
I blushed and looked down at my school uniform. I hadn't had time to change so I was stuck wearing her clunky black shoes, plaid skirt, tie, and green vest. I raised an eyebrow, “perfect outfit to visit Japan, no?” I joked.
He laughed and punched me lightly on the shoulder, “ no kidding! I'm being sent to Japan to make video games!”
I frown, no way was he that old! He looked to good! Damn! Maybe…., “you so can't be older than me!...... are you?”
He snickered, “ yeah I'm only 16, but I'm really good!”
Egotistical male! I smile and open my mouth to congratulate him when,
*Miss. Maye, please report to gate 27, to board your plane, Miss. Maye, please report to gate 27.* boomed above them on the PA system.
I growled at it and reluctantly stand up. “ I'm sorry, i gotta go….” I say sadly.
“ oh! Dude, Its okay. look for me in Japan. Don't' worry I'll recognize you!” he says pulling out his MP3 and grinning.
I snort through my nose and wave goodbye, “totally not a player!” I mutter to myself. I wander over to gate 27, where several huffy attendants pushed and tugged me onto the plane, the whole time talking away about how they'll be there if I need anything and so on and so forth. I wasn't listening, I was more worried that the pack of batteries that I had bought at a stand on the way over would work for the ten hour flight.
“ Ma'me, would you like the hot meal or the cold?” the flight attendant asked. I looked up from my social homework, my head spinning with Russia and their great railroad.
“hmm…….? Oh! Cold please” I say, dazed.
The attendant smiled and handed me a tray. It a had a bowl of cereal, a thing of milk and a muffin on it. The second the smell of everything on the tray wafted over to her, her stomach leapt into her throat. Crap! Flight sickness!
“ uh…I'm not that hungry actually…” I say holding my stomach, willing it to stay in my body until the tray leaves.
“ aw, that's okay honey, lots of people get sick on their first flight.” She said reassuring me and wheeled the tray away.
I sighed in relief. Thank god!
~~ten hours later~~
I stood by the corrals waiting for for my bag to come around so I could pick it up. Green bag, red bag, black bag, black bag. Oh! Gee! Where's my freaking bag?! Where's the exit?! I need air! Oh no! the signs are in Japanese! What if there's a fire and I'm trapped because I can't read Japanese and no one helps me out and die! Ooooh! I'll haunt Kai till he dies from exhaustion!!!!!! It'll be all his fault and I'll be in the after life and,
“ Miss. Maye?” a hesitant deep voice said behind her. I spun around to come face to face with a young man.
I stumbled back a couple steps, tripping over one mans baggage, “ oh! I'm so sorry!” I cry out and try to help him out but he just looked at me funny, grabbed his bags and left. “ uh….” I stick my tongue out at him, “ fine then!”
I hear snickering behind. I turn back around confused. A tall lanky young man stood before her. Shiny black hair and pale skin making him look completely foreign to me.
“ what are you laughing about?! You think this is funny? I'm in a new country where no one knows who I am or what language I speak and all you do is laugh?!” I yell at him.
Snorting he held out his hand, “ hi, I'm Souta, and yes! that was extremely funny!”
I hrumph at him and shake his hand, “ you speak English?”
He grinned, “ yep, lived in America for a few years.” He glanced around, “ you are Miss. Maye, right?”
I glare at him, crossing my arms over my chest, “ what'da think?” then I smile, “ of course, you don't see many 16 year old Canadians around here often, do you?”
He breathed a sigh of relief, “ good, I'd hate to pick up the wrong girl. Here lets get your baggage.” He said walking over to the corrals.
I sighed and rubbed the back of my neck in agitation. The heat was already getting to me, and sweat was perpetrating on my forehead. I roll my eyes and walked over to him to help him with my bags.
~~ten minutes later~~
Souta was trying to fit all my suitcases into his small trunk while I leaned against the car. “ hey Souta, how old are you?” he totally looked to be….20? maybe 18? How could I be living with someone so young?
He slammed his shoulder against the trunk, it moved a millimeter. I snicker.
“ oh! I'm 18, but I graduated early.” He said and slammed against the bag again.
I blink in confusion, “ I'll be living with you? And only you?” I say sounding a little panicked.
he laughed, “ of course not, there's five of us all together, Riku, Yasiko, Mike, lee, and me. we had some problems finding you room so we cleared out the storage shed, and fixed it up a bit. Its now fit for a queen. Just a queen with a pay cut….big pay cut…”
I burst out laughing. “ oh, I feel so much better now! Thanks!” I joke sarcastically.
He smiled and slammed against the suitcase again and this time it popped in. caught off balance, Souta collapsed onto the cement pavement.
“ oh my god! Are you okay?!” I asked as I bend down to help him up.
The second my hand touched his bare arm a painful blinding pain shot up from his arm, into my, traveling to my head. I stager backwards, clutching my head. The last thing I see before I black out is a shocked Souta rushing to my side.
