Three Shot by Kytenluvinu
After Naraku’s destruction Kagome finds the well closed and Inuyasha’s arms finally open. But old friends come play... a little too rough.
I make no claim on Inuyasha which belongs to Takahashi-sama and affiliates.
He took her as a mate the day after Naraku’s destruction. Kagome didn’t know then, that the well was closed to her forever. Inuyasha had no problem with Kagome returning home but the twenty year old wanted to stay close to her new family. And close she was to the hanyou she loved. Kagome was no longer the shy maiden and after a few months she hoped she was pregnant with a little demon baby.
“If your so impatient, why don’t you go home and take one of those pregnancy tests you keep talking about.” Inuyasha huffed after Kagome mentioned it for the hundredth time that day.
“Can’t you just tell by sniffing me?” Kagome whined while wrapped in her husband’s arms. Kaede gave them her and Kikyou’s old large home, the older miko asked Kagome to become the new village miko when she died. Kagome happily and reluctantly accepted the job. She had been training under Kaede all spring, while keeping up with her new husband’s urges.
“Keh! Don’t be stupid Kagome. What’s your hurry anyway?” Inuyasha scoffed.
Kagome lowered her head and smiled sadly. “Well, I’m not getting any younger.” Kagome looked into Inuyasha’s beautiful golden eyes. “You know?”
Inuyasha’s ears drooped with understanding. She was only human. In fifty years, he’ll look the same and she... will be different.
“Kagome, I...” Inuyasha began.
“Inuyasha!” The voice of the fox child rang out. And Shippou hurled himself into the room Inuyasha and Kagome shared.
“Damn it, Shippou!” Inuyasha yelled, grabbing the kitsune by the tail. “What did I tell you about coming in here when the shouji is closed!”
Shippou crossed his arms and stuck his nose up in the air as a matter of factly. “You said you and Kagome were making babies and that the technique was a secret from children.”
“Well what do you think you are doing coming in here then.” Inuyasha growled.
Shippou smiled. “I counted all the way to one hundred this time. Usually you guys are done by fifty, sometimes even seventy five.”
Inuyasha narrowed his eyes at the innocent child. But Kagome wasn’t so innocent, with her hand over her mouth and her eyes shining with laughter. Inuyasha held his composure, and tried to block out the insult.
“What. Do. You. Want. Shippou?” Inuyasha asked through clenched teeth.
Shippou grew serious and squirmed out of Inuyasha’s grasp. “Kaede said she felt a youkai approaching fast. I felt it too, it was familiar. I think it was Kouga.”
Kagome rolled hers eyes and laughed. “Well now you can go ahead and boost about ‘conquering’ me.” Kagome smiled.
“Damn strait.” Inuyasha puffed up with pride and kissed the mortal he loved. “Listen, while I take care of wolf breath. You go home and find out if I’m having a baby.” Inuyasha’s eyes shined with hope and Kagome leapt into his arms.
“So you do want a little puppy!” Kagome squealed.
“Keh, so what. As long as it will keep you quiet, I have no problem with it.” Inuyasha held his wife tight. “So go home and make me a father.” The hanyou whispered lovingly.
Kagome wiped away tears of happiness and pulled away from her love. Kagome wasted no time in leaving the hut and heading towards her home in the future. She couldn’t wait to tell her mother about the final battle and her marriage. Kagome knew her mother would support her decision to become a mother and with be happy to have a little silver haired baby with tiny dog ears. Kagome decided that Kouga would probably be there when she got back and hopefully she would be telling all her friends some good news. Without thinking the miko leapt into the well, and didn’t feel the magic claim her.
Kagome didn’t know how long she remained at the bottom of the well. She didn’t cry, she couldn’t. Instead she smiled, memories of her former life flooded her heart and mind. Souta would grow, Mama would still be so beautiful and kind. And Grandpa...
“I’ll miss them.” Kagome whispered as she slowly stood and climbed out of the well. She felt numb all over and a sense of horrible calm overcame her. “Something else is happening. Something is terribly wrong.” Kagome didn’t feel her feet moving but she could see herself dashing back to the village.
Kouga was standing alone, eyes wide. Blood dripped from his claws and his lungs felt like they would collapse. “Don’t die.” The wolf whispered. “Don’t your dare die, you idiot.”
“Sorry wolf. Looks like you finally win.” The hanyou smiled as he fell to the ground. Kouga ran to his fallen friend and knelt by his side. He kicked another dead youkai away from the hanyou and held his friend in his arms. “Don’t let her be alone.”
“I promise you, Inuyasha. I will dedicate my life to protecting Kagome. I will never let her be alone. I promise.” With Kouga words, Inuyasha smiled.
Kouga could sense the miko in the wind and he looked up. He felt the figure in his arms grow stiff. When Kouga looked back down, Inuyasha was dead.
“Murderer.” Kouga heard the girl he loved whisper. The wolf stood and faced Kagome. “You killed him, murderer.” Kouga was shocked that Kagome was so calm. He could see a fire burning in her eyes and her face was contorted into a look of heartbreaking sadness. But her voice was even and soft.
“Kagome, you don’t understand.” Kouga reached out to Kagome and flinched when he saw her glow with brilliant spiritual power. But then suddenly she simply fainted.
“Will she be okay, Kaede?” Sango asked in regard to her best friend.
Kaede placed a cool cloth against Kagome’s burning brow. “Aye, Child. Kagome just over exerted yourself. It seems that her powers were once again sealed.”
Sango sighed. “Another enemy?”
Kaede smiled softly. “This is no enemy. ‘Tis a child.”
Sango felt tears stream down her cheeks. “Inuyasha would have been happy to here it.”
The two watched as Kagome shifted and stood. Sango quickly leapt to her feet to help her friend. “Kagome! You should rest.” Sango was shocked at her friend’s happy expression.
“What are you talking about, Sango. Why should I rest, I feel fine.” Kagome replied cheerfully.
Sango took a deep breath and collected her thoughts. “Kagome, don’t you remember... Inuyasha. He-he was killed... by Kouga.”
For a moment Sango watched as Kagome’s eyes grew wide and then to her shock, Kagome bursted out laughing. “What! Don’t be silly Sango! Inuyasha probably went out hunting while I went home. He’s waiting for me. He must think that I got through but surprise! The well is closed me. Wait until I tell him.” Kagome didn’t wait for a response as she dashed out the hut and to her own. Sango stood in pure shock and Kaede was at a loss for words.
“What happened to her?” Sango finally said after an uncomfortable silence.
Kaede sighed. “Her mind is torn. I’m afraid that Kagome is unwell. This is too much for the child. We must help her through this.”
“You’re right, Kaede. Miroku is about to bury Inuyasha now. I’ll take her to him.” Sango choked back tears. “If she see’s his body, maybe then it will become clear to her.”
Kagome sat alone in the hut she shared with her husband, ignoring the persistent knocking of her best friend. It was at that point that Kagome decided to hate Sango. Her friend was lucky, she was about to have a baby with the man she loved, and probably go on to have many. She envied Sango’s gift, and she was pissed that she didn’t bring any locks with her from the future.
“Kagome,” Sango pleaded after walking into her friend’s home. “Please, I need you to come and see something.”
“What.” Kagome bit out a little too harshly.
“The truth, Kagome. I need you to see the truth.” Sango explained with tears.
Kagome huffed and stood to follow Sango. After a moment of walking to Goshinkobu Kagome froze. He was swelled up with bruises and a huge hole was through his heart. Kagome’s world stopped in an instant. This lifeless thing wasn’t Inuyasha. Her hanyou never looked so pale. His hair never was so dull. He has never looked so hurt and... dead. Dead... dead.
“Inuyasha?” Kagome whispered. “Inuyasha... Inuyasha... Inuyasha. INUYASHA!!!!”
“It was an accident.” The soft voice of Kouga rose up from behind Kagome. “I never meant for this to happen, Kagome.”
Kagome turned suddenly and slapped Kouga hard in the face. “You did this?!” Kagome screamed. “You killed my husband! You bastard, I hate you! Murderer!” Kagome could feel her stomach tighten and she became dizzy. The world began to spin faster around her and the cramps worsened. She saw Miroku and Sango reach for her. Kagome eyes trailed to the lifeless form of Inuyasha and she reached out. For a moment she thought she saw the hanyou’s loving face and a clawed hand reaching back.
“Be strong...” She heard him whisper. “Don’t let my name die, Kagome. Take care of our baby.” Kagome cried at this and immediately lost consciousness.
When the miko woke she was alone in her hut. Kagome tried to sit up, but found that she was terribly weak. The events of that afternoon flooded her thoughts and she completely broke down. She wanted Inuyasha, again she tried to sit up, only to be pushed back again. Kagome looked up at the strong force holding her back and rage filled her thoughts.
“You!” Kagome screamed.
Kouga looked down with soft eyes. “If you get up. You’re baby may die.” Kouga said softly. At his words, Kagome froze.
“What?” The miko asked.
“The old miko, Kaede. She said you shouldn’t get up. The stress may kill your baby.” Kouga explained.
“My baby?” Kagome felt her womb. “I’m going to have a baby?”
“Yes, congratulations.” Kouga smiled. He was taken back by Kagome’s look of hate. That’s right, she hated him for killing her mate. Kouga felt his eyes burn and he turned away. “You are right for hating me. I did kill him.” Kouga turned to face her again. “But you must believe me when I tell you that it wasn’t my intention!” Kagome said nothing as she stared at the wolf with pure hatred.
“Get out.” Kagome said through clenched teeth. “Never show your face in this village ever again. Disgusting Wolf.”
Kagome’s words tore the prince apart but Kouga merely stood and stared down on her. “No.” Kouga responded strongly. “I won’t leave you here alone.”
“Get Out!” Kagome screamed.
“No!” Kouga screamed back. “I won’t leave!”
Kagome’s face contorted into a look of despair. “Please, just leave Kouga. Please leave me alone. I just want to be alone.”
Kouga’s shoulders sagged in defeat. “Alright, Kagome. I’ll leave for now. But I swear to you that I will return. I made a promise. And I intend to keep it.” Before Kagome could respond, Kouga was already gone. Kagome laid back on her futon and cried herself to sleep.
Kouga listened by her door until he was sure that Kagome had fallen asleep. He then made his way to the fresh grave of his friendly rival. Kouga stood in silence over the grave for a long while before speaking.
“It maybe harder than I thought to keep my promise, my friend.” Kouga sighed. “I want to tell her what really happened today. But I know she won’t believe me.”
“Well then fill us in, Kouga.” It was Miroku. Along with Sango and Shippou. The kitsune’s eyes were red from crying. He held a bouquet of green flowers in his tiny arms. While keeping his eyes on Kouga he stepped forward and placed the flowers on the grave of the man he knew as father. Then without a word he ran off. Kouga watched him go, and the wolf knew that some day the fox would feel obligated to challenge him and avenge his father.
Kouga then watched as Miroku and Sango placed their red and white flowers upon their comrade’s grave. Then they both fixed their attention on Kouga.
Kouga sighed and spoke. “I came here to fight.” Kouga admitted. “I knew from the first day that Kagome and Inuyasha were married. Sesshoumaru told me. I came to pay my respects and challenge Inuyasha. That is the way of the youkai. It was pride, not the desire to beat him and take her. He had already won. But we had to do it, because of my claim.”
“I am aware of youkai customs.” Sango said softly.
“Yes, I’m sure you are. That means you also know that once Kagome was claimed, I no longer could just defeat Inuyasha and take her. I would have to kill him.”
“But you also know that Kagome would never accept you if you killed Inuyasha.” Miroku spoke up.
“That’s why I didn’t come here to kill him. Kagome loved Inuyasha, not me.” The wolf continued. “Inuyasha knew I only came here to preserve my honor. I would fight with everything I had but in the end, Inuyasha would still win. I accepted that. We fought as friendly rivals. I lost honorably. But the scent of blood was in the air and a leopard youkai caught wind of it. Damn, he was fast but fun to fight. At least Inuyasha and I thought so. Just another competition to us.” Kouga smiled at this then grew sad. “Inuyasha had him. I saw this, so did he. But my pride wouldn’t let him have it. I pushed him out of the way and went in for the kill. I didn’t see Inuyasha in time. He stepped in front of me to make the kill, I was already striking. I killed them both.” Kouga looked at the murderous claws that killed his friend. When I pulled back, I had both of their hearts in my hands.” The wolf clenched his fist and felt the blood pour down his arms and drip off his elbow. “Inuyasha died in my arms, making me promise to never leave Kagome alone.”
Sango reached out and pulled the surprised Kouga into her arms. “I’m sorry, Kouga.” She whispered.
Miroku stepped forward. “Yes, we apologize for doubting you. We will help you make Kagome and Shippou understand.”
Sango released the wolf and Kouga smiled. “Know that the fox and I will battle years from now. It is his duty to avenge his father. No matter what happens now.”
Sango wiped away tears. “We understand, please come and we will get you settled into the village.”
Kouga allowed himself to be introduced to the human village who accepted him with open arms as the member of Inuyasha and Kagome’s group. Kouga marveled at how quickly the villagers trusted him and helped build a hut of his own. By the time night had fallen the wolf had a small hut of his own next to Sango and Miroku’s. Kouga went for a hunt and brought back five pheasants. Two for Miroku and Sango, one for himself and two for Kagome and Shippou. He cleaned the birds and cook them throughly for the miko. Silently he stepped into Kagome’s hut and placed them by the still sleeping girl and the fox. He had hoped that Shippou would awaken by the smell before they got cold. Kouga didn’t wait around to find out.
