Chapter 4~Potions and Problems!!
Kagome was not allowed in the inner chambers with her father and the demon lord's vassals, so she went to her private garden to help calm her nerves and settle her stomach. She sat by her Koi pond and ran her fingers gently atop the surface, smiling when the huge fish nibbled gently at her fingertips. She had spent so many hours on so many days growing up here at the pond; it had been her one source of true peace and serenity, her only solace when she wanted to get away from her teasing sisters, or some punishment her father wanted to dole out because of one thing or another she had done. She had always tried to be an obedient child, but sometimes she couldn't help herself, sometimes she found herself speaking when she was to remain silent. Her father always called her a wild spirit, one that hated to be tied down. So she ended up getting in trouble a lot.
She wondered if her demon husband would have a garden with bright over-flowing flowers, trees that blossomed and made the petals dance in the wind, as well as a huge pond where she could sit and contemplate life, center her soul. She was so into her thoughts she hadn't heard the door from her private chambers open and two figures enter her garden `til she heard the first snide question.
"So, Sister, do you think that our little sister's demon lover shall have fur? Maybe even a forked tongue?" asked Kagura of their older sister Kikyo.
Kikyo laughed softly, but that laugh was not filled with mirth.
"Well, that might be an added bonus, Kagura. You know what they say about a man who has a good use of his tongue?" Kikyo replied with that sexual comment that had Kagome blushing beet red. She was not used to being blatant in sexual talk, but her sisters had never had that particular problem and often did it in front of Kagome to humiliate her.
"Well, a forked tongue might come in handy indeed, Sister, but I would forego the gratification I might recieve if I had to bed a demon, or worse yet a half demon; there is just no telling how hideous he may look. I would surely have to gouge out my eyes to not be ill just looking at him," came Kagura's reply.
Kagome tried to ignore them. She knew they were trying to make things even more difficult for her, but she didn't see why they liked to torment her so.
"Maybe out little sister prefers demons to humans, Kagura. Did you not notice how eager she sounded to volunteer to be the chosen one to wed the demon lord?" taunted Kikyo with an evil little smirk.
"Hmmm, maybe it is not that she prefers demons but is more ambitious than we first thought."
"How so, Sister?" asked Kikyo, intrigued.
"Well, it is said that the Lord of the West is one of the wealthiest of all demon lords as well as human lords. They say he has been prosperous and holds great wealth and power, so maybe our little sister would sacrifice her maiden-head to be wife to such a creature for the power and wealth...regardless of how he looks," stated Kagura, and Kikyo looked contemplative.
"Maybe you are right, Kagura. We might have been too hasty in not thinking of this proposal much more seriously. Think about it, Kagura…to hold all that wealth and power. Who could stand against you? Who would dare? Surely that is worth the degradation of having to sleep with such a creature," came Kikyo's response.
Kagura laughed, thinking it a joke, but Kagome had seen a slight light in Kikyo's eyes very briefly before it vanished that made Kagome think that she had not meant it as a joke after all.
"Why must you call him a creature, Kagura? How do you know what he looks like? He may look very normal. It is said that certain hanyous take after their human parents more than their demon ones, so who is to say he is hideous?" Kagome asked with some temper. Both Kikyo and Kagura laughed.
"Oh, to hope and to wish, eh Little Sister? Keep telling yourself that and maybe Kami shall see it come true," replied Kagura with an awful laugh that made Kagome want to slap her.
"Why are you so hateful?" Kagome asked softly with a tinge of sadness in her voice. She loved both her sisters and never understood how they could treat her so.
"We only wish to prepare you for what you have volunteered for, Sister. There is no hope that there will be any happiness between you and your demon lord, but hopefully he will not be a cruel lord and maybe you can find some happiness in knowing that he may send you home after the year is up," came Kikyo's reply. She almost sounded concerned for Kagome.
"Although, when you do come back, you shall be a tainted woman and not many men will want you after a hanyou has had you," added Kagura.
"Do you think I do not know this, Sisters? Do you think I have not thought about this all? What would you have me do? Tell father that I have changed my mind? Has it ever occurred to you both that I did this for you? Father was about to render his own decision and you both know that it would have been one of you he chose since you are the elder sisters. But I chose to save you both from that fate and all you've done is taunt and belittle me for it when I only wished to spare my sisters, whom I love, such a fate," explained Kagome, in tears by this time.
The looks on both girls' faces softened as her words sunk in. They had not thought about that detail, which was very true. They had not thought about which one of them would have been forced to marry the demon lord, and yet their sister had loved them enough to sacrifice herself in order to spare them? How selfish were they? Both sisters, without a word, went to their little sister, and in a show of rare emotion they embraced her. There in the garden they held her and let her cry, gave her as much comfort as they could, and thanked her for her sacrifice. They had been so used to teasing their little sister, but both truly did love her, for she was family, the youngest of them all.
****************************************************************** *************************
To say that Kagome's departure was a tearful one was an understatement. Kagome and her sisters had still been in the garden when they had been summoned and told that it was time for Kagome to leave. Kagome had hugged her mother, who had held her, but stiffly. Kagome noted that her mother did not shed any tears. Kagome figured her mother had schooled herself to be calm in the presence of others while at court. She assumed her mother would cry later while in the privacy of her chambers. At least she hoped she would. Kagome's mother had never been really emotional or affectionate to Kagome. As for her sisters, they hugged her yet again and bid her a tearful goodbye with thank-yous as well as apologies. When it came to their father though, he had clung to Kagome and kissed her face and cried many tears, his hold upon her tight and fearful, as if he would never let her go. His face showed so much emotion that it broke Kagome's heart. At one point, Kagome was sure that he would say be damned with the treaty, that he would not let her go. But she pulled away and wiped his tears.
"Trust me, Father. All will be well and I WANT to do this," she told him as she bowed and turned to leave.
Kagome didn't turn around as she walked out of the hall and out into the courtyard where a large finely decorated carriage awaited her. She saw another wagon that held all her personal belongings and, at the sight, she felt a twinge of genuine fear. Would she ever see her family again? Fighting the urge to turn and run back into the palace and safety of her family, Kagome squared her shoulders and let Miroku the monk help her into the carriage. He entered next followed by the small toad-demon who sat as far from her as possible. Tears welled in her eyes as the carriage took off and she watched the palace growing further and further away.
To keep from totally breaking down in tears, she looked out the window and studied the guards. All were demons, some of various species, but most were Inu youkai or so Miroku had commented when he saw her staring at them. They were not bad looking or as fearsome as she thought full-demons would look, but Jaken made it clear that they were all in their more human forms and that their true demon forms were large and very fearsome. It was why the late Lord of the West had been so powerful and feared; he had been the biggest and most feared of them all. Kagome couldn't help but wonder what her hanyou would look like.
"What will my lord look like, Miroku?" Kagome asked, trying to gain some information and pass the time.
"Lady Kagome, has no one told you of the potion?" Miroku asked with surprise and discomfort.
"What potion?" she asked with suspicion.
"I was sure this part was also in the treaty," said Miroku as he gently rubbed his jaw in contemplation.
"It was, Human, but apparently the human lord did not read it or didn't see fit to tell his daughter of it," came Jaken's nasal voice.
"What potion?" Kagome asked yet again.
Miroku sighed.
"Lady Kagome, part of the treaty stated that you must fall in love with our lord for himself, not for what he looks like or for his title. It is one of the reasons that a princess was chosen for his mate; she would not seek him out for his title. Now, as for the other? In order to love someone, you must get past their looks and their gruff ways into the being and soul inside. Do you not agree?" he asked, eyeing Kagome.
Kagome nodded her head `yes'.
"That's where the potion comes in, My Lady. Being hanyou, as you know, has already made you biased toward him and you are no doubt expecting a beast or a monster. If you already have all these preconceived notions, then it will be harder to get past what he looks like and see the soul that resides in him."
"What is this potion and what will it do in order for me to see past what he looks like and into his soul?" Kagome asked with evident suspicion.
"The potion was made long ago specifically for my lord and his kin. Once taken, you will not be able to see my lord or his kin," stated Miroku.
Kagome frowned.
"What do you mean? The potion will blind me? Are you mad, Monk?" Kagome said angrily. She had not been told this, and if she had, she would not have agreed to it.
"No, My Lady, it will not blind you. You will be able to see everything and everyone as plain as day as you do now, except for my lord and his sister."
"How can that be?" she asked with confusion.
"As I said, this potion that was made long ago was specifically made to hide the offspring of my late Lord and Lady of the West, meaning Lord Inuyasha and his little sister, Kanna."
"Then how will I know that he is about if I cannot see him or his sister?" she asked with renewed fear. Now she was not even going to be able to lay eyes on the man she would wed?
"He will not be invisible, My Lady, but when you see him and my young mistress, they will be but gray figures to you. You will hear them and feel them plainly; it is just their appearance that will be altered. The potion will last but a full moon's time, but you will be given another vile to drink each month `til the year is complete. If, in that time, you do not fall in love with him, you shall be granted the option to return home with all the support and wealth you will ever need to continue your lifestyle for as long as you live, for you shall be married to my lord in the human way and he will take that duty seriously."
"And, if I don't fall in love with him, I will never get the chance to see him or his sister at all, will I? I will never know the face of the man I have wed?" Kagome asked almost sadly.
"No, My Lady. It is not only for your protection but my lord's and his little sister's as well. You see, there are many humans that would wish my lord harm, even if it meant getting their hands upon his younger sister to do so."
"But I would never endanger them; they will be my family the moment I wed my lord."
"Be that as it will, My Lady, we cannot take any chances and the treaty is specific over this point as well," stated Miroku.
Kagome was silent then. She did not speak or look at Miroku or Jaken at all as she stared out the window and thought of this new development. How was she supposed to marry a man she didn't know, let alone see at all? She didn't know if she could go through with this. She didn't know if she could not only marry him, but also share her wedding bed with a being she could not see? It had been bad enough imagining what he might look like, but in her heart she had held out hope that he would not be so bad. Now she would not be able to see him AT ALL. How could she share a wedding night with someone she could not see? Yes she seemed to be hung up on this part, but it was an important part for her. She didn't know if she could do this.
Miroku and Jaken didn't say a word, but watched and prayed that the young princess wouldn't decline and change her mind. Until they reached the castle there was still an option for her to say no and for the treaty to be broken. If it were, then Kanna would be betrothed to Naraku and that would not be good for any of them. No one wanted to see that happen to such a beautiful wonderful girl like Kanna, not to mention what Inu would do if that happened. They were all counting on this young girl, and if she agreed, they would have to admire her for it. She was being given the raw end of the stick and they all knew it, but none of them could do anything about it. All rested upon the shoulders of this young woman and they prayed that she would not let them down.
A/N~Okies heres the next chap, the one after this should be interesting will Kagome go through with it or not? Will she leave poor Kanna out there to hang with Naraku as a mate?? hehe ya know she wont so the next one shall be her and Inu's first meeting and I hope the potion thing was not to overboard, but hopefully it explains what I mean by the dark...I dont know I just had this thing about Kags and Inu becoming intimate without seeing each other and falling in love that way, call me nuts...till next time huggles and smiles Mija...:-) again Wendy thank you a bunch!
