Unspoken: A demon's Heart

Prologue Part 1: What Used To Be

“Sesshoumaru?” His thoughts were pulled from the many scrolls awaiting his perusal by a very feminine voice. “You shouldn't worry over such menial things. Enjoy some peace for once.”

“Hn. Perhaps.” He scoffed at the idea, but decided to humor her this once. He would never admit that he was tired, humoring a woman was much more becoming.

“Come, your father is preparing to leave again.” She squeezed the shoulder she placed her hand upon, urging him to comply. He grunted at her silent request, rising from behind his mound of papers. “You are more like your mother than you are willing to admit.”

“I am nothing like th-”

“It is very unbecoming to lie to one's betrothed, my son.” The booming voice of the Dog-general couldn't be mistaken as he made himself known. “And, you are just as emotionally impaired as your mother. There is no way that you can deny it, you are her son through and through.” His low thrum of a chuckle shook their ears as he took in his son's expression. “Truly, my boy, you must own up to such things one day. And, as for you my dear, I think you will do fine in keeping things on perspective for him. You will truly make a fine lady one day.” He smiled at the faint blush that donned her cheeks and nose. She was not the most beautiful woman, but she was attractive with a fiery spirit; a fine compliment to his son's stoic demeanor. His grandchildren will be something he will sorely regret never seeing. “Come, son, we have some things to discuss before i depart.” The room seemed to enlarge as the great general's form exited the study.

“Rhei.” His regal stature was betrayed by the warmth radiating from his golden irises. She stared, transfixed by those golden pools, paying no heed to the clawed hand that reached for hers. “Come, I'll walk you to your room.”

She swore she caught the glint of a smile as she took his outstretched hand, allowing him to lead her out of the room. “Actually I would prefer the dojo.” She smiled up at his indifferent expression, knowing that he preferred she didn't go. “Don't give me that look.”

“I have no idea what you are referring to, my dear.” Certain she saw a smirk that time, she smiled radiantly back up at his warming expression.

“I know you don't like my past, but think of it this way. If I was never trained as a warrior, then we would have never met.” He huffed lightly, giving her a disbelieving look. “Yes, I know my father would have been the general to your father's forces regardless.,however,” She patted the arm she had hers looped around. “if I was not capable of convincing your father that i was an able sparing partner for his son..”

“Ah, but you forget that your winning his approval was gained by trickery. A,” He paused, searching for the correct phrase. “product of your sorcery-laced lineage if you will. Had you not masqueraded as a foreign male, then none of this would have come about.” Her elated expression fell under the weight of his obvious disappointment. “In light of such, I would have it no other way.” He would never admit it, but he couldn't stand when she cried. He smelt the foreboding smell of salt whenever he reiterated his lack of approval at how they met, thus causing him to always forgive her previous actions no matter how inappropriate.

“Exactly, you would not have made a bumbling idiot of yourself asking my father for my hand had i not.” She smirked at his playful snarl. He may be deadly, but he was still adorable. “Now, my lord, there is a certain young lady I know of who is expecting a proper farewell kiss.” She shot him a sly grin, earning herself a half-hearted growl in return.

“Hn, I was under the impression that a lady did not ask for such things a concubine would.” This is going to hurt. He stiffened his posture, readying himself for the retaliation he knew was coming. She never did take very well to his teasing; still he enjoyed the way her scent spiked and her eyes flashed when she was angry, she was a truly beautiful spitfire.

“Why you, you, ass!” She knew he was expecting her comeback at the way he obviously readied himself. He grunted when her icy clawed hand made contact with his flawless cheek. “I'm going to go in here and, and, and... well I'm just going in here to imagine kicking your fluffy ass!” He watched as she turned on her heel in a flurry of raven locks; she simply captivated him with her fiery spirit.

With a small grin plastered on his normally stoic face, he greeted his father in his study. “You wished to see me, father?” He wished at that moment that he could have avoided his father until the effects of his impulsiveness went away. “It is nothing.” He waved his clawed hand dismissively in answer to his father's questioning raised eyebrow.

He, the prince of the West, had never in his life questioned his father's sanity so much as he did at that moment. “My boy,” His father slapped him on the shoulder, all the while trying to reign in his bout of laughter. “I think you have found the perfect woman for you. She has quite the spirit and she is a damned good warrior too.” His father snorted at the three glittering gashes that adorned his cheek. “And she will surely prove to be a tough conquest, but I am certain you are already well aware of her inability to be dominated.”

Sesshoumaru sneered at his father's teasing manner, however, he could only growl like a wounded pup as he was the only of two individuals who could laugh at his expense and not be reprimanded. Besides, he couldn't stand up to his father if he wanted to without his ass being handed to him several times over, and the other he wouldn't dare lay a hand on anyway. “I do not wish to dominate her, she is a worthy mate.” He squared his shoulders and met his father's gaze evenly, he was well prepared to have his ass handed to him in defense of his chosen female.

“I am well aware of that fact, my son.” He met his son's gaze, silently ordering him to submit or face the consequences. “Now is not the time, besides, I believe she will be good for you.” Sesshoumaru lowered his eyes and relaxed his posture, dropping the challenge he readily made. His father was right, now was not the time for rivalries, not when a war was afoot. “She threw some power into it did she not?” Sesshoumaru's hand came to the still open gashes, noting how they were beginning to thaw. “She may be a hanyou, but she has the power to rival many full-youkai. Her dam was a sorceress from across the sea, and her sire was my very own sensei. She has powerful blood Sesshoumaru, your offspring will be powerful as well. I do not doubt that fact.” He returned to one of the many cushions adorning the room, sighing as he closed his eyes in thought. “She will bring you many problems, you are aware of this?”

Sesshoumaru scowled, his eyebrows knitting together to show his disapproval. “I am unconcerned of what others think.” He would fight any that threatened his mate.

“You cannot protect her forever, there will be times when she is beyond your reach.” The elder demon sighed heavily, not really wanting to say what he had to. “There is a way, however, to..” He paused, looking to his son for any indication he shouldn't continue, but all he saw was the eagerness to protect a mate glaring back at him. “eradicate the ability of others to challenge her. She will have to prove her worth.” His son opened his mouth to object, but snapped it shut a second later as a sharp scowl graced his features. “Yes, I am well aware of her being only half-demon, but she is the root of many complications even now. We are facing a war with a rival lord over my refusal to betroth you to his daughter, but I do not regret the decision. Despite her annoying tendencies, I happen to approve of the little vixen.” The great taiyoukai looked worn as he ran his hand through his silver hair, the years finally showing on his features. “I cannot condemn her for being hanyou, I myself have something I have been meaning to tell you, but in order to prove her right to be your wife, she must face her challengers in battle.” He rose to his full height, mentally preparing himself for the confession he had been planning. “Sesshoumaru, I have faith that she will win. She will not bring disgrace to you because she is strong, she is more than capable of holding her own against even you. She will bring honor to this house despite her lineage, she will fix the mess I have caused.” His son's eyes showed his approval and agreement at his words, but also reflected his confusion. The great lord took a steadying breath, he was too old to care, but his choices would still affect his house. “I married a human hime.”

“What? I think I heard you wrong father. I'm sure you didn't say you've married a human hime?” At his father's tired demeanor, sesshoumaru knew the rumors had been true. The great demon lord of the west, the inu no taisho himself, had married a human princess. “Why tell me this now?”

“Because, she will arrive soon.” His mouth agape, he couldn't think of anything to say. His father was allowing the woman to live here. Had he lost his senses? Rumors were one thing, but to confirm them in such a way would wreak havoc upon himself and his reign. “Her name is Izayoi.” Before he could voice his protests his father had gone, signifying the end of the discussion.
