Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha or any related characters. This remains true for any and all InuYasha fan fiction that I write. I have no wish or desire to own them, well maybe Sesshy, but I give thanks to their wonderful creator whose name I can't even spell. The unnamed (for now) original character is, however, completely my own.

Prologue: It Begins

She sat at center court, her head tilted upwards with her eyes closed as she remembered the roar of the crowd…the feel of the ball in her hand as she charged down the court with her teammates. In her mind's eye she saw the clock winding down, those last few seconds in slow motion, as she went in for the shot. The cheers and shouts from the crowd lost to her as she concentrated on making that shot. Those same voices suddenly screaming in fear, as all hell broke loose…

“Get You! Get off the court you mangy dog!”

An angry masculine voice jolted her from her thoughts as she bounded to her…. paws. Unnoticed tears slid down fur covered cheeks as she tucked her tail between her legs and slunk towards the side door; stomach close to the ground in hopes that the people watching her wouldn't feel the need to kick her to get the point across.

“What's a dog doing in the school in the first place?” another male voice asked.

“I don't think that's a dog. Looks more like a black wolf to me,” a woman's voice said.

“There aren't any wolves in Japan anymore. It's just some stray dog,” the first man said again as she slid through the open door and bolted.

The sidewalk passed in a blur as she ran; her only thought: to get to safety…to get away from people.

Kagome had just rounded the corner when a black blur barreled into her legs and sent her, and the many grocery bags she was carrying, tumbling down. She landed hard on her side, having twisted mid-fall in hopes of catching herself. A soft, panicked whine made her glance up at the animal tangled in the handles of one of the bags. Somehow when she dropped the bag, the animal had gotten both back legs trapped in the plastic handles and was now frantically trying to half pull, half gnaw its legs free.

Taking a deep breath, Kagome scooted a little closer to the upset animal and reached out a hand, palm up in an attempt to both calm the animal and to assure it that she wasn't a threat. Instead it snapped at her with another whine and then heaved its legs free and, just as quickly as it had run into her; it was off again down the street.

“It looks like a dog,” Kagome said softly to herself as her brows creased in thought, “But it didn't feel like a dog.”

With a shrug, she got back to her feet, gathered her bags, and continued towards the shrine. All thoughts of the dog flew from her mind when she encountered InuYasha upon entering the house.

“You're late…again,” he grumbled at her as she simply waved him away.

“Well, I had to buy stuff to bring back. Let me pack my bag and we'll go,” Kagome told him as she headed for the stairs.

She made it back to her `sanctuary' without further incident after her run in with the girl and her bags. Sides heaving, she wandered over to the nearby pond and lapped up some water to help cool down. Making sure no one was watching her, she slunk slowly to a large oak tree and pushed away the debris near its base to reveal a large hallowed out area under the trunk. She hadn't dug this hole under the tree, but she had to admit that it made a nice hiding place.

Ever since that day; the day she had been cursed, she had been as she was now. A human girl trapped in a dog's body.

No, she thought ironically, not a dog; a wolf. Not that anyone could tell the difference. People in this country don't even know what a wolf is anymore.

She had followed the one that had cursed her to this foreign land. Japan was the other side of the world for her and at first she didn't understand anything anyone said. Now six years later, this `hole' was her home and she was fluent in the language; not that she could speak it in her current condition.

Last year she had finally cornered her prey only to have the damn witch slip between her fingers like mist through a window screen. Shortly thereafter the woman had been killed, leaving her trapped in this Goddess forsaken form. One would have assumed that once the person that had cast the spell was dead that the spell would have been broken, but no she wasn't that lucky.

But today…. today she had heard it in her memory. Among the screams of fear; the shouts of horror, she had heard the words of the spell. For so long she had tried to forget that horrible day; never thinking that the key to her release might be in the very words she thought she hadn't heard in the first place. Boy had she been wrong.

Curling up under the tree, her muzzle pillowed on her tail, she closed her eyes and again remembered that sweet, yet damning voice:

Twist her bones and bend her back
Give her fur blacker than black
Change her form to that which she loves most
Shift her so she may never change back
Never to walk as human again
Till a kiss from the Ruler of Dogs doth she obtain.

It was a simple spell, very simple indeed. A novice, level one Witch could have cast that spell effectively, but not with that near impossible twist.

A kiss from a `Ruler of Dogs,' she contemplated, obviously it was possible or the spell wouldn't have worked. All facets of a spell must be true in order for it to properly function…so who, or what, was the `Ruler of Dogs'?

With a sigh she drifted off to sleep, her dreams plagued by golden eyes, wicked laughter, a cracked pink jewel, and a sad black haired, armored priestess calling to her.

Author's Note:Well here we are, another fic. Yes this will be an Inu/Kag pairing. I've no idea when the next section of this story will come to me. I've no idea why I've even started another story since I haven't finished `The Chosen' yet, but this opening has been plaguing me ALL day. Seriously, I've not been able to concentrate on anything else. Let me know what you think. Good opening? Bad opening? Make you want to find out what happens? Feedback ladies and gents: I want to know if YOU want me to continue with this one. Enjoy.
