Friday - Just Like Friends Again

“Inuyasha, office, now.” Ayumi stated quietly. The once shy, blushing beauty was always a trial to meet at work…and this was no exception. Inuyasha looked over at Miroku. After yesterday's little commotion Miroku apologised for being so insensitive and Inuyasha apologised for being so high strung and emotional. His best friend gave a shrug and whispered `good luck' for comfort.

Yeah right. The way his situation was leaning right now, he'd need more than luck. More like a phenomenon.

Inuyasha followed Ayumi's retreating back through Shiro Royale Investors Inc. giving blank stares to familiar work faces and the few women who risked the chance to glimpse at him. Ayumi's temporary office of course lacked a few home comforts like pictures and things but it was still nice: mahogany wood panels covered every wall, a small design of flowers etched at the bottom of them. An oak desk stood in the middle of the medium sized room with a big leather chair behind it. A filing cabinet and a bookcase on human anatomy stood on one side of the box room. Behind the desk were small windows, overlooking the business centre gardens. Ayumi sat in the leather chair, indicating for Inuyasha to do the same with the chair opposite.

Why'd he feel nervous? Ayumi was a friend. Surely she'd be lenient in the work place? Oh that's it…she WAS a friend. `Duh.'

She looked at him intently for a while before she spoke.

“Never thought you'd be working under me huh?” To say the least, this wasn't what he was expecting. `What is she playing at?' he thought curiously. He decided to flatter her.

“Well you always were the smarter beauty.” She smiled.

“Flattery gets you everywhere…just not in this case.”

“There goes plan A…” he mumbled quietly. Ayumi's face then turned very professional.

“Inuyasha, you are the best investor I know. But you're slipping. I like my department to be on top of themselves, you know? What I'm trying to say is, as much as I love her, don't let your problems with Kagome get in the way of work.” Inuyasha relaxed considerably, and sighed heavily. He put his arms on the desk and placed his head in them.

“It's just so hard. I mean our last argument was about whether or not Sailor Moon could beat Tuxedo Mask…and that was like years ago! I guess I'm a bit out of tune, you know? Haven't argued in such a long time, don't know what to expect anymore…” he trailed off and Ayumi reverted back to friendly mode. She moved around the desk to sit on it and pushed Inuyasha up into a sitting position.

“Listen…what do you do when you get a new customer or you have to deal with a potentially sticky situation?”

`What's going on now? I really don't have time for a test…'

“Ayumi-“ he started, confused and unable to keep up with her flow of thoughts.

“Just answer the question - what do you do when you get a new patient?” Inuyasha thought for a few seconds.

“You evaluate their situation.”

“Exactly, and the same could be applied to your problems don't you think?”

He thought for a minute. “I guess it could…”

“Right let's start. What is this all about?”

“I think about the pictures that Kagome saw. But she's just going over the-“

“Slow down, not yet. Now what do you think this is all about?”

“Her being jealous. But then that doesn't make sense `cause she's never been-“

“Inuyasha! One thing at a time!” Ayumi interrupted, slightly angry. He sighed.

“Sorry…”

“Alright,” she said calmly. “So you think she is, or she may be jealous?”

“Yeah.” Ayumi inwardly rejoiced at his one word answer. At least he didn't try to continue. She would have abandoned ship and left him to his own devices. Disastrous maybe, but at least her own sanity would be intact.

“Did she tell you how she felt?”

“Yes, but not directly…I think.”

“OK. Did she say it made her feel inadequate?”

“Something along those lines…”

“Well duh!” Ayumi's outburst brought confusion to his already baffled mind.

“But I don't get it! Kagome's fantastic! Why be like-“

“Put yourself in her shoes. Would you like it if Kagome had a picture of some sexy, gorgeous, fine, hot…”

“I get the picture-“ he interjected irritably.

“Are you sure because I can continue to draw it and paint it in detail if you like…” Sudden realisation hit Inuyasha.

“I should have realised it before!”

<>”You should have realised it long before now genius.” Sensitivity said not so himself, not so…sensitive. Ego appeared next to Sensitivity, a sullen look on his face as he listened to Inuyasha…<>

“Of course she'd feel inadequate! But I didn't understand because I already thought the world of her and I thought that would be all she'd need to feel secure about her and me as a couple…”

“Carry on,” Ayumi urged.

“She probably felt as if…as if…I was comparing the past and the present and thought my better times were back then with Kikyou, which isn't true…”

“Continue…”

“I can't believe I was so stupid! And she even told me before and I was oblivious to it! I should've been more considerate, listened to her instead of getting ahead of myself thinking I'm all she'd need. Trust my male ego to get in the way.”

Ego deflated considerably and sank to the floor while he sobbed uncontrollably. Sensitivity begrudgingly placed a hand on his shoulder, tapping it lightly.

<>It's all my fault bro!<>

<>I know<> Sensitivity stated simply. <>There…there…<> Sensitivity muttered pathetically.

<>I can't live without Merciless!<> he cried.

<>Sure you can't-<>

Ego started howling into Sensitivity's trouser leg, blowing his nose loudly, sounding truly upset.

<>I almost broke them up!! I almost broke Merciless and me up!<>

<>Its Merciless and I brother and you haven't broken anybody up yet. Nor has anybody got back together either. If anything Forgiveness and I will surely forgive and forget<> Sensitivity replied, almost wisely.

<>Really?<> Ego asked; hope shining in his deep blue eyes, something characteristic to when Sailor Moon was on the verge of crying, his eyes wavering slightly. Sensitivity was genuinely taken aback.

<>Of course<> and he gave Ego a small smile.

<>Well thanks bro!<> Ego suddenly jumped up, happy, as if his rare show of emotion never happened. <>I'm worth something! Another thing, don't get all mushy on me I hate it<> Sensitivity just muttered a few choice words under his breath, his face darkening red, as his rose turned into a club…<>

“What should I do?” Inuyasha asked looking up at Ayumi hopefully

Silence for a few seconds…

“Cut out some pieces, add a few, change to the first person and I think you'll have a grade A apology. Make it an A+ if you add a special something in it. And I don't mean in your pants, no matter how special. I don't intend to be delivering Kagome's baby just yet.” She winked and despite the pink highlighting his cheekbones, Inuyasha grinned widely. She ruffled his hair and walked out of the office.

“Yuko, where's my coffee? Maaya, where's my customer report? Miku great pictograms…do even better! Takeo what do I pay you for? Not to ogle Inuyasha's body! Miroku! Cover for Inuyasha, he's got a mid-life crisis and is feeling a bit ill, despite being in a hospital-“

Inuyasha smiled. Ayumi was great. A little demanding, but great

“YUKO! MY COFFEE!!!”

Inuyasha phoned that night from the hotel room before setting off for home again.

“Hello?” came the sweet voice, like sweet wild honey, and perfumed roses. Dripping softly and smoothly into his brain, imagining his beautiful siren calling out to him now, wanting him to come back home…

<>Er, I know I've decided to go along with this reunion plan, but man, that's a bit over the top bro!<> Ego said, disgust creeping into his Inuyasha like features.

<>I'm just trying to get the vibe going - you know get him in the mood…<> Sensitivity said softly, eyes closed, legs crossed and playing a harp as if in meditation.

<>That's why you leave the `getting in the mood' jobs to me - stand aside little one!<>

<>Not like that!<> Sensitivity shouted angrily, throwing his harp down sharply…

“Kagome?”

“Yeah?” a disinterested voice said. Not even a `hi honey, how you doing?' He was starting to miss the little things…

“Kagome, I…I don't want to do this over the phone. I want to say I'm sorry to you in person but do you think we could…just act like friends for tonight? I miss talking to you and I really need some one to talk to right now.”

“Bored?” she questioned.

“Extremely.” There was silence for a few seconds.

“Well hey; at least you got Ayumi and not one of the others. At least if Ayumi annihilated you she would then feel guilty about it and try putting you back together. The others would have left you lying there.” He laughed at her morbid reply and sighed inwardly. `At least we're talking…'

“So you'll be my company for tonight?” he asked cautiously.

“…Yeah only to oblige you…I haven't forgiven you.”

He heard the seriousness in her voice.

“I understand.”

“Anyway you've got all of tomorrow evening to make up for it.”

Now that sounded promising. At least he knew she wanted to make up. Or HE was meant to make up…

They talked well into the night, about nothing and everything but soon it was time to go, fear of the phone bill rising.

“Night Kagome. I love you.”

“…Night Inuyasha.” She hung up. She was still upset but he was determined to put it right.
