Vicariously
What only his eyes have seen
Are things that I'll never have to see.
Pain.
Suffering.
Anguish.
Woe.
Prejudice.
I've seen these things,
But never directed at me.
His eyes so gold, so pure-
Reflections of torturous memories
Dance freely over those orbs.
Amber-rich, and deep, and wise;
A trait he seldom displays
Flickers there, gentle but strong,
Like a single moonlight wick set a-flame.
There's a passion there, one of life
And one of love long lost.
And another which arises
From fighting for his life,
And another for the desperate loneliness
He must've felt upon those moonless nights.
He sits not far from me-
Above, to be precise-
And loiters there, eyes fixed ahead, upon the great full moon,
With his hair of that same color fluttering in the breeze.
He may think I'm sleeping,
But I just watch him in unease.
His life may be cut short, by a promise that he made,
And the closer that we get,
The more we become afraid.
I think he knows I love him,
And that he loves me too,
But all those horrors he's suffered,
He thinks I do not know,
That day by day, I see it all,
Happening yet again,
When our gazes lock,
And my eyes are filled,
In richest hues of gold,
The memories of long ago-
What only his eyes have seen…
And I have seen them too.
