~~Chapter 18: Christmas~~
“Wow, InuYasha Morikami please repeat what you just said.”
InuYasha blushed. “Feh!”
“Pretty please?”
“Feh!”
“Come on…you know you wanna.”
Looking at Ayame Taka, InuYasha could see the sparkle in her brilliant emerald eyes. `What she ever saw in that mangy wolf if beyond me' “I said, I'm going to propose to Kagome.”
“Nice.” Ayame made herself comfortable in the leather chair placed in front of his desk. Dr. Ayame never faltered in her fashion style. When working she always wore slacks, a well-fitted button down shirt, and her never-faltering, high heel shoes. Her hair, tossed casually over her shoulder, cascading down her slender back. “Don't you think you're going a little to fast?”
“Feh! She's remembering more and more when she sleeps. She knows she spent two years with me, she knows how much I love her. She knows, I'm confident she'll say yes.”
“That's overconfidence right there.”
He growled. “Its not. I know Kagome's heart and I know she loves me. I won't marry her now, I just want to make her my fiancé now.”
Ayame smiled. “If you think so, then do it. You two would have adorable puppy-eared children. I wish my kids had your ears, InuYasha…they're the most adorable thing you have. I bet that was why Kagome fell for you.”
“My ears?”
“Absolutely.”
With that, Ayame winked at him before getting up. “I have to go back to the office. Tell Kouga the next time he wants me to drop off papers, I won't.”
InuYasha nodded and she grinned before walking out of his office. Ayame, giving up her lunch for the day, had dropped by with papers her mate had requested. She had entered his office only to find Kouga wasn't even there, he was doing business on the other side of town. Angry, she had stormed in to InuYasha's office and presented several ways she planned to destroy her mate.
`Hope she does. Be ridding me of a huge pain in the ass'
He grabbed the manila envelope Ayame had left. Sighing, he tossed it to the side of his desk before getting up and walking back over to his blue print table. Leaning over the side, he scanned the design that a German business man had requested. As a very well known architect and business man himself, InuYasha was fluent in several languages of the world. `Five hundred years of practice makes a difference.'
Christmas was just around the corner. In a special occasion, Kagome had hinted his whole `family' should gather in his newly decorated house. He had agreed and told Kagome to bring her brother, mother, and grandfather. She hadn't wasted any time in calling her mother and telling her while InuYasha called his beloved `family' to inform them Christmas would be held as his house for the very first time.
Not that he minded at all. Kagome and him worked hard to get the place decorated. The least thing he could do was make sure people appreciated it. Besides, the happiness in Kagome's face made it worth while he'd be dealing with the annoying gaggle he called “family”. Deep, deep, deep, deep down…he had to admit, they weren't so bad.
`Not like I'll ever tell them that though.'

She should've kept track of time longer. She hadn't realized Christmas was only in two days and she had barely gotten any gifts. Kagome sighed as she walked out of a store, crossing out Souta's name on her `Christmas Shopping List'. People walked quickly, getting last minute gifts and having them wrapped. Commotion was everywhere as people bargained, took, chatted, and laughed. When she had gotten out of school, in the cold, because it was cold, she had to run home to change.
Throwing on jeans, a long-sleeve black shirt and a red sweater over it, Kagome had tried to put on her sneaker and her sock at the same time. But since it was her lucky day, her sweater's zipper had gotten stuck. It took her almost an hour to zipper it back up. And because it was her very lucky day, she had forgotten her credit card and from three blocks from her house, she had to run back to get it. Returning again, she made sure she had everything before leaving again with her coat on. So busy with school and InuYasha, she had forgotten a few important gifts.
`What should I get for Akina?' Kagome wondered, looking at different stores and not really paying attention to where she was going. Some stores caught her eye, but they didn't seem just right. She heard a slight gasp before she collided with a very hard chest and fell back.
`Very lucky day, Kagome.'
`Oww…' Kagome groaned softly, having landed very hard on her rear. Her bags flew from her hand and had landed around her.
“Kagome, I'm so sorry!”
She looked up and was met with sapphire eyes studying her. It took her a moment to realize who it was. When she saw the white youkai crests on his forehead she knew exactly who had knocked her down. `Raidon'
He extended his hand to help her up and she took it. He bent down and quickly picked up all her bags. “I'm sorry Kagome, you aren't hurt right?”
“No.” She muttered, red flooding to her cheeks. He chuckled.
“I should've paid attention. I didn't meant to knock you down.”
“Its ok, Raidon. I've had worse.” Kagome sighed and tried to take her bags back. He pulled them back.
“I'll help you and maybe you can help me” He said casually, a little too casually. Kagome raised one brow at him.
“Oh?”
He nodded. “You're a girl, you know what other girls like.”
“I assume I do.”
“Good, good.” Raidon nodded. “You remember my girlfriend, right? The small one, Rini?”
Kagome slightly remember seeing the red-haired girl once or twice. “Y-Yes…yeah, I remember her.”
“Alright.” He allowed. A small grin came in to his handsome face. “She's my mate. She's a human, but she's my mate.”
Kagome frowned. Raidon nudged her to start walking forward. “What's wrong with being human?”
“Not a thing. I just never thought I'd have a human mate, is all. I mean, all my ex-girlfriends were youkai and hanyou. Kin and Kiyoshi's also. But when I met Rini, I don't know. She's my mate though and I told her everything already. She accepts me.”
`That's cute' “And what do you need my help in?”
“A ring, for Rini. She's human, she'll want to get married the human way. She's said so already, says she wants a big wedding.”
Kagome smiled. “Alright, but you also have to help me. I'm stumped at what to get your sister for Christmas.”
“Akina?” He chuckled. “I'll tell you her secret shame.” He leaned down a little to whisper in her ear. “She's in love with frogs.”
Kagome made a face. “I can't buy her a frog for Christmas!”
Raidon looked offended. “I bought her a frog for her birthday last year.”
“And how did she like it?”
“I dunno. She still has it though, stashed in her secret frog compartment in her room.”
“Frog compartment?”
“Sure. My brothers and I have a theory she has a hidden tunnel that leads to a secret room where she keeps her frogs. We say she'll probably mate a frog-youkai.”
“And how old are you?”
“Centuries old, but that's not the point is it? Get her a frog and add to her collection.” He grinned. `Akina will kill you. She hates frogs'
“You're no help at all. I'll get something else.” Kagome sighed and rolled her eyes.
He laughed. “You can still help me though.” He became serious. “I'm not really in tune with Akina that much. She's so much younger than I am and I always pick on her. She doesn't really like to tell me anything. She's closest with Kiyoshi than with Kin and me. I think I'm the brother farthest away even though Kiyoshi is my twin.”
Kagome sighed softly. “Maybe you should bond with you sister before you mate and never truly get to know her at all.”
Raidon thought about it for a while before sighing softly. “I suppose I should.”

“She doesn't like diamonds?”
“Hates `em”
“Wow. Why?”
“Because, she admits they're beautiful, but she likes color.”
“The one you chose is beautiful.”
“You think so?”
“Definitely.”
Raidon grinned and looked at the platinum engagement ring, with a big ruby right in the middle. “Then I think we made the right choice.”
Kagome nodded in agreement as they stepped out of the jewelry store. They didn't even walk in to the next store when a faint voice was heard.
“Kagome? Kagome Higurashi?”
“Kagome? Kagome Higurashi?”
Kagome turned around and saw a small woman, shoulder length brown hair with now shinning eyes. `No way…'
“Oh it is you!” The woman went up to Kagome and hugged her tightly. Raidon stepped back and Kagome hugged the woman.
“You look beautiful,” Kagome complimented her. No longer a shadow of a woman, Hojo's mother looked happy.
“Did Hojo ever tell you where he was going?”
Kagome shook her head. The woman sighed softly. She placed a hand over Kagome's. “I'm happy darling.” A spark of wisdom crept in to her eyes. “Thank you, Kagome.”
“For what?” Kagome whispered.
Hojo's mother shook her head before smiling. “I'll see you around, honey. Be careful and if you see Hojo, tell him his mother still loves him.”
With that she smiled at Raidon and walked away. Kagome blinked, taken aback by the complete three-hundred-sixty degree change Hojo's mother had underwent.
“Who was that?” Raidon asked.
“Hojo's mother…” Kagome whispered. He seemed surprised, but shook his head, taking Kagome's hand and gently pulling her towards the exit of the mall.
“Wait!” Kagome grabbed his jacket. “I still haven't bought anything for your sister.”
He shook his head and chuckled. “I happen to know a store---not in here---that Akina likes. I'll take you there.”

InuYasha let in Mrs. Higurashi and Souta in first. Behind them Kagome came in to his house carrying a tray wrapped in aluminum foil. He leaned down to quickly give her a sweet peck before taking the tray from her hands. Kagome smiled up at him and he led them in to the living room.
“Grandpa went to spend Christmas with an old friend of his.” Kagome said softly. InuYasha nodded and sighed.
`Better for me. No Ofuda sticking today…' InuYasha thought with a smile.
He could definitely survive a day without Grandpa, especially that day.
As Kouga finished talking, the family started laughing at whatever the wolf had said. Kagome took their attention and presented her family to InuYasha's. Sesshoumaru was the first to greet Mrs. Higurashi.
“Your daughter is a very admirable woman. I'm sure she will make it very far.”
And coming from the tai-youkai, that meant a lot. Mrs. Higurashi blushed and nodded. “Thank you Inutaisho-san.”
Everyone else gave Mrs. Higurashi and Souta warm greetings. Souta, upon seeing Akina, went to her to talk. “Hi, Aki.”
Besides Akina, Kiyoshi grinned. “Hi Souta, how've you been?”
“I adore your boyfriend, Aki,” Kiyoshi whispered loud enough for only Akina's youkai ears to pick it up. She shook her head. Souta started to tell her all about his school, friends, and life.
“This is beautifully decorated InuYasha.” Kagura said, admiring the hanging decorations around InuYasha's living room.
“Feh!”
“No doubt purely the Miko's taste.” Sesshoumaru said, glancing at InuYasha as he continued to sip his drink. Kagome blushed as she came in from the kitchen. Mrs. Higurashi was busy talking to Shiori who had a sleeping Shippou besides her.
Kagome went to take a seat besides InuYasha on his leather couch, but he grabbed her wrist and gently tugged her on to his lap. “Mama is right there.” She whispered. He shrugged and held her tightly. Kagome bit her lip, uncomfortable when her mother looked over at her.
Mrs. Higurashi said nothing, instead shot Kagome a sincere smile. With that `approval' she relaxed in the hanyou's embrace.
“Mistletoe!” Raidon held the small mistletoe over Kagura and Sesshoumaru. The tai-youkai snorted and Kagura chuckled.
“You've got to be kidding me. Sesshoumaru does not drool all over his mate in public.”
“We're not in public, Uncle, we're amongst family.” Raidon argued, mischief sparkling in his sapphire gaze.
Kagura rolled her eyes before leaning over and planting a little kiss on Sesshoumaru's cheek. “Kagura…” Sesshoumaru said in a warning tone.
“Don't start now.” Kagura warned, magenta eyes staring straight in to the eyes of her mate.
“…Ridiculous.”

InuYasha pulled Mrs. Higurashi in to the kitchen, twitching his ears to make sure no one was coming.
“What is this about?” she asked, smoothing out her dress. InuYasha hadn't given her the time when he had first whispered he'd be back to Kagome, getting up, setting her aside, going to Mrs. Higurashi and dragging her in to the kitchen.
Golden eyes stared at her and he sighed. The words were stuck in his throat. “Y-You of all people should know how much I love your daughter…”
The woman's smile was kind. “I know InuYasha. Is that all you need to tell me?”
His left ear twitched again. “N-No…I-I damnit.” He sighed and shook his head. “I want ask for you blessings so I can ask Kagome to marry me.”
She stepped back, hands flying to her mouth. For a moment, he thought she was going to say `no'. “Oh that's wonderful!” She cried, running and hugging InuYasha tightly. “You have my blessings, honey, absolutely.”
`That was easier than I imagined.'
“You've protected her since she arrived to your world. She thought of you as her best friend, I couldn't ask for someone better to be Kagome's husband. Take care of her, InuYasha.”
“I will.” `I'll take care better than anyone else. Now…to ask Kagome.'

Gathered around the dinner table, it was only once in a while that the whole family would gather like this. It was almost mid-night and they were eating pastries and drinking coffee---some hot cocoa. InuYasha stared at Kagome, who was laughing with Akina, Shiori, and Kagura.
He dug his hand in to his pocket, feeling the velvet box containing the ring. Mustering his courage---in front of his family---he stood up. `Its now or never.'
He cautiously walked over to Kagome. “Come with me, Kagome.”
She smiled at him and stood up. He didn't take her far from the table, still in the dinning room. He laced their hands together. “You know I love you Kagome, right?”
She nodded.
He grinned. “From the first time I met you, the first time I saw you, you took my breath away, even if I never said it then. You taught me to trust and you showed me what true love was. I waited for you and I finally found you again, I finally can hold you in my arms again. A-And if you give me the chance, I'd like to make you happy for the rest of your life.”
Kagome gasped, eye going wide as she took a tiny step back. “I-Inu…Yasha?”
He blushed and blinked quickly before untangling his fingers from Kagome's and slowly sinking to one knew. Tears pricked Kagome's eyes.
`Kami…is he going to do what I think he's going to do?'
`Don't faint! Don't faint!'
He dug out the box and presented the ring to Kagome. “W-Will you m-marry…me?”
She watched, his cheeks were flushed, but his eyes glowed with the question, hoping. She fell to her knees in front of him, her first tear falling. He winced. Without warning, she threw herself in to his arms, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck and laughing. “Yes!”
He let out a huge breath of relief he hadn't realized he was holding. Kagome was showering his face with kisses and he suddenly didn't feel the gazes of his family members, of hers. No, all that mattered was Kagome had said yes. He took her hand and slipped the ring in to her slender finger.
“It's beautiful, InuYasha.” She whispered, leaning up to kiss him.
Sesshoumaru cleared his throat loudly. “Don't act like a pup, InuYasha. Get off the floor, I'm sure you're future mother-in-law and brother-in-law want to congratulate you.”
InuYasha snorted, but did stand up, helping Kagome stand up also. He wrapped an arm securely around her waist and kissed her cheek. “I love you.”
“I love you to.” She whispered back.
And the swarm of hugs began.

“I like this ring,” Kagome said, staring at the diamond ring on her finger. “Thank you.” She rolled over, bumping in to InuYasha's side. She threw her arm over his chest and her leg over his. “You've made me the happiest girl ever.”
He opened one eye, looked at her. “Really?”
She brushed a gentle kiss on his chest. “Yes.”
He rolled over, pinned her down underneath him. He laced their fingers together and brought their arms up to rest over her head. He leaned his head down, fanned his breath over her neck.
She gulped.
“Kagome?”
She looked up at him, the intensity of his eyes burning her, scorching her. She swallowed a lump that formed in her throat, her mouth suddenly dry. “Y-Yes?”
He brought his face closer to hers, lips almost touching, but not quite there yet. “You want me to kiss you?”
“Yes,” She said without hesitation or blinking.
“Merry Christmas, wench.”
She grinned. “Merry Christmas, dog-boy”
And his lips dropped over hers.
