~~Chapter 33: Kagome's Mission~~

“Which one is yummier?”

He didn't answer.

“Kiyoshi?”

Kiyoshi Taka rounded his sapphire eyes on his brother's mate. He looked at the two fruits Rini held in her hands. “The orange.” He chose. She grinned. Raidon had to work late this particular Thursday, so he insisted Kiyoshi accompany Rini to the supermarket since it was dark already. And with nothing else to do, Kiyoshi agreed. He bit his lip, trying very hard not to let thoughts certain people penetrate his head.

“Sometimes you and Raidon are like the same person.”

That shook Kiyoshi out of his reverie. “What?”

The small girl shrugged. “Raidon does that pose, when he's thinking.”

“Twins,” He reminded. She nodded.

“I know.” Rini continued across the different aisles. “What's wrong?”

“Nothing” He lied. Rini rolled her eyes, but didn't press him.

An all to familiar scent filled his nose and he whipped around to see Alexandra grabbing a clear bag and putting several strawberries in to it. He could see Rini from the corner of his eye as he approached the wind-youkai. “Fancy meeting you here.”

She gasped softly and dropped a strawberry. She shot him an irritated stare. “Kiyoshi! Why do you always have to scare me?”

He made a face. “You're supposed to be on your toes---” He looked back to make sure he could see Rini. “---all the time.”

“The supermarket is hardly dangerous.”

“The supermarket, no. The people in the supermarket, maybe.”

She clucked her tongue, but didn't say anything as she closed the bag with the strawberries. “What brings you by?”

“I'm here with Rini. Raidon didn't want her to come by herself and me like a good twin, accompanied her.”

“You're so kind hearted.”

“I know.”

Alexandra rolled her pretty eyes and continued to move on. Rini looked at Kiyoshi and shook her head. She pointed to the dairy section and he nodded once. “I'm still saying `no'” Alexandra said without looking at him.

Kiyoshi frowned. “I wasn't here to ask you anything. I just wanted to say hi.”

She straightened her back. She shot him a mock hurt glance. “No hints? Nothing?”

He shook his head and stuffed his hands in his pockets. “I finally realized you were right.”

“I---Right?” Alexandra frowned. Where was Kiyoshi going with this?

“Yeah.” He nodded. “You said you didn't want to give me a chance and to move on. You were right, you were something I couldn't reach. I mean, dozens of rejections ought to tell me something, ne?”

She stayed quiet.

“And I met someone that I…like.”

He looked at her and for a split second, he saw sadness in her gaze before her usually strong eyes returned. “Good for you, Kiyoshi.” She chuckled softly. “Finally?”

He nodded. “You won't ever have to worry about me bothering you again. “

`If so, then why do I still want to grab her and kiss her?'

“Good,” She mumbled before walking towards where Rini was. He sighed and looked at her retreating form.

“Alexandra?”

She turned around, violet eyes piercing through his very being. He went up to her, gently pushed her hair back. She frowned. “For the record, I really did think you would give me a chance and I really did love you. I would've treasured you, had you given me the chance/”

“I thought you wanted to say goodbye,” She whispered. He sighed.

“I am, but I just wanted you to know.”

“Why?”

“Because you deserve to know and you deserve all the happiness in the world…even if you were a little mean to me.”

“Mean?”

“Yeah,” He grinned. “A little bitchy. You turned me town harshly all the time.”

A light pink actually tinted her cheeks. His eyebrows shot up.

“Did I just make you blush?”

“No,” She replied quickly.

He chuckled. “Goodbye, Alexandra.”

She rolled her eyes. “Goodbye, Kiyoshi. Treasure someone else.”

Before she ran away like she always did or push him away, he leaned down and gently brushed his lips against hers. Her gasp was loud and her eyes flared open. Before she could react, he stood up straight again.

She grabbed his arm and he quickly looked at her. His heart sunk at the sadness in her gaze. “I think I made a mistake,” She whispered before brushing past him and quickly away from his sight.

He wanted to chase after her. `Let her go…'

`Yeah. She's gone, she's always been far away from me.'

“I can't believe you just planted one on her. That was a cheap shot, Kiyoshi.” Rini accused, crossing her arms over her chest. Her gaze was fierce, as if she was going to murder him. He winced. Why did this tiny slip of a girl intimidate him?

“Pfft! I'm not scared of you. Raidon might be, but not me.” He grabbed her arm. “Come on, Rini.”

“Wait! I forgot brownies!”

Kiyoshi rolled his eyes when Rini ran off to get her beloved brownies. He started after her. `She's fast' he thought as he sped up to catch up with her.

“How long has it been here?”

Kagome looked up at Goshinboku, who's leaves rustled with the breeze. “Forever.” She whispered.

“Its huge.”

Kagome nodded, sitting down on the small bench besides the tree. “It's called the tree of time. It was here five hundred years ago, before that, and its still here. They say the tree's bark is magical.”

Vincent laughed. “Folktales.”

“Maybe,” Kagome shrugged. Vincent sunk down besides her, glancing at her.

“What's wrong Kagome?”

She bit her bottom lip. “I-I…I can't marry you.”

He looked like she had just slapped him. Closing his eyes, he sighed. He opened them slowly, looking up to stare at the sky. “Why not?”

“I care about you,” Kagome started, but sighed. `No point sugar coating it' “The truth is, I was in my senior year of high school when I met InuYasha.”

Vincent dragged his hand across his face. “Kagome---”

“I-I can't…I mean, I do care, you're an amazing person, but---” her lip trembled.

“But your heart belongs to him, doesn't it?” He asked softly. Kagome nodded as the first tear fell from her eye. Vincent sighed before reaching up and wiping it away with his fingers.

His eyes didn't look mad. They didn't look hateful towards her. They looked sad. “You can scream at me if you want.” She offered in a whisper. He shook his head.

“A part about loving someone, Kagome---” He said, cupping her cheek. “---is wanting what's best for them. You're the most amazing woman I have ever met and I love you, and as much as I love you, I want what makes you happy. If what makes you happy is InuYasha then its with him you belong with, right?”

“Vincent…”

“If you married me and still loved him, you wouldn't be happy, you'd be miserable. A hard part about love is letting go. Be happy Kagome, you deserve only the best.”

“You're so kind,” She said, letting him draw her in to a hug. He kissed her cheek.

“I wish you only the best, Kagome.”

“You too. Only the best…”

She took off the ring, handed it back to him. He glanced at her before standing up and walking over to the base of Goshinboku. He rolled up the sleeves of his dark blue shirt before, using his hands, digging a small hole in the dirt and dropping the ring inside of it. “I leave all of you here, Kagome.” He put dirt over it again before standing up and dusting off his hands.

“Goodbye, Vincent.” She said as he walked away, going in to the shrine to pack his things.

The tree swayed with the breeze. `I'm free…'

`Free to be with InuYasha forever?'

`Yes.'

`Then what are you doing here? Go to your mate.'

`Yes'

It seemed as though right after Vincent left sight, Kagome ran the fastest she had ever ran. Breezing through the busy streets of Tokyo, she didn't pay attention as she almost knocked down people. She had a feeling InuYasha was home and that was where she was headed. `His home is my home.'

`After six years of baka-ness, we can be friends again Kagome.'

`You hated me?'

`…Yeah---well no. I didn't hate you, but I didn't like you. `Course, who would?'

Kagome almost laughed. `I think Vincent was an extraordinary person.'

`He was, he was. He just wasn't the one for you. His soul mate is somewhere else. It takes a true pure hearted person to let someone go like that, with all the care in the world. I'll give him that, he was a very good man.'

`Yes he was and now I'm free.'

She didn't slow down her pace as she neared the house. Grinning widely, she saw InuYasha standing in front of his house, as if he had been waiting for her. His golden eyes saw her, his ears perked up, and his arms opened up to her.

And without a second thought, Kagome ran faster. She needed to get to him. When she did, she launched herself in to his arms, wrapping her legs around his waist and hugging him tightly. His breath fanned her neck. “Welcome home, Kagome.”

In her mind, it hadn't been hard to understand why she had left. Confusion in her memories made her feel as though she was walking through a labyrinth. It hurt her head, to know she had known InuYasha long before they had ever re-met. It hurt her head, to be reminded of things she didn't remember.

Her trust in the hanyou had been yanked away from her and a clean slate had been given to her. She had to learn to cope with memories she didn't understand, learn that InuYasha had always loved her---or so he had claimed. But maybe it hadn't been easy for either of them. InuYasha had waited to so long, but Kagome's memories had been yanked away, locked away deep in her mind. She had needed to get away, to learn on her own, to subdue memories she wasn't ready for.

Pieces were coming together. She remembered the flare of InuYasha's sword, the light of Kikyou's arrows, the tunnel of Miroku's hand, the strength of Sango's Hirakotsu…but in spite of all the memories she wanted desperately to understand, she didn't want InuYasha to come on to strongly on her. She never voiced her confusion and maybe that was where she went wrong.

And now that she had flown on her own, fended for herself, created her identity again as Kagome Higurashi, not Kagome the Miko, she was ready. She found herself, this person she was now. They were in a different time, in a different place. She hadn't considered InuYasha's feelings, to desperate to make something of hers. For that…'I'll spend forever making you happy, InuYasha. For everything I've done to you, for the pain I've caused you, I will make you happy. Today, tomorrow, the rest of forever.' She smiled as he ran his claws down her hair, holding her gently.

`And now that you have gotten your head out of your ass, you have to realize a few things.'

`Not even you can ruin my mood right now.'

`I'm not trying to. I meant, InuYasha is with you and will take care of you because you're his mate. But you have to realize his trust in you has been…damaged'

`Damaged?'

`Yeah, you know…poof! I mean, you have to earn your mate back, Kagome. He'll be with you, but you'll feel like there's something between the two of you and its your job to take down that wall between you two.'

`He---'

`You have a hard job ahead of you my friend. It'll be a while before he can put himself to you again.'

Kagome didn't respond, feeling InuYasha softly scratch her back. She didn't regret leaving, she had found her place in the world. On the way, she found three best friends and a man who had a heart of gold. But her place wasn't in the United States, it was in Japan with InuYasha Morikami who had waited centuries to finally be with her and have her promise him forever like he had long ago. “InuYasha?”

He didn't set her down. “Hmm?”

She looked at him, caressed his cheek. “I promise I'll spend forever with you.”

He smiled softly. “I'll hold you to that.”

“You love me, baka.”

“And you love me, wench.”

She giggled as she leaned down, brushing her lips against his. He cradled the back of her head, rubbed her neck gently. But despite the reassurance that InuYasha would be with her, Kagome could feel his aura closing against him, it wasn't opening up to her.

She whimpered softly. `Earn back my mate?'

`Yeah.'

`For you InuYasha, I'd do anything.'

The modeling show had been a success. And Kagome couldn't help but feel extremely proud of herself when Ruby walked down the runway by herself, showing off the dress Kagome had designed. She had seen it within InuYasha as well; the unmistakable arrogance and pride in his gaze as he held her hand and stood besides her as people congratulated her. Vincent had left already. Emma and Sharei had to leave also in the morning. Kagome and Victoria would leave after the corporate party at Taishou Inc.

Kiyoshi had asked Victoria to accompany him. The girl was smitten with him and so she had agreed. Kagome would only return to New York to grab her things and tell Ellena goodbye before retuning to Japan. She would leave the morning after the party with Victoria on one of Taishou Inc.'s jets.

It seemed as though the craziness was finally dying down. Kagome wasn't in a hurry, not in a rush to get things right for a show anymore. She was fine and when she returned, in need of a job. But she didn't know if Victoria would return. Her life, her studies were in New York City and Kiyoshi's life was in Japan.

Hopefully though, things would come together.
