Chapter Two~

"Inuyasha! Wait!" Miroku, Sango, and Shippou bounced as Kirara bounded after the inuyoukai.

Inuyasha had automatically panicked rushing down into the canyon. Stone ledges made amazing pathways for the hanyou and neko-youkai's flight.

As Kirara swerved around a sharp corner, Shippou got an eyeful of what was below.

Sango felt something on her back and turned to see Shippou clutching her kimono in a death grip with his eyes squeezed shut. Picking the kitsune up, she cradled him as she had seen Kagome do several times.

Shippou seemed to like this and became much calmer as Kirara shot after Inuyasha.

I can't believe it' thought Inuyasha. Accepting the prospect of Kagome's death wasn't going well. The fact that she died at his hand was what ate at his guilty conscious.

"She can't be dead." A growl rose in his throat. Thrusting Tetsaiga harshly into the wall to vent some frustration. Pulling Tetsaiga from the rock wall, he continued his trek down.

`Almost there.'

Once he reached his destination, Inuyasha got down on all fours and stuck his nose to the dirt. Several sniffs led him down to a grassy area. "I can smell her! She's alive!"

Kirara landed at the edge of the grassy space. Smiles spread on the gangs' faces. They hopped off Kirara, who transformed back into a small fire-neko, and ran after a sprinting Inuyasha.

The hanyou stopped in mid-run. There in a patch of soft, dewy grass lay Kagome. Her body was still; no blinking of her eyes, no rise and fall of her chest. Even the wind seemed averted from her peaceful body.

The grass that cushioned Kagome's body looked bronze, tainted with her crimson blood.

"But," Inuyasha spoke to himself. "She…her scent…How?"

Shippou, who had passed out recently was cradled in Sango's arms. "Is…is she…" Her voice trailed off leaving the question unanswered. Praying to anyone listening to revive the limp form of Kagome.

(*~_~*)

"That's my body. But," Looking down only confirmed that she was indeed there, in what she was sure was her body.

`What the hell's goin on.'

"I can smell her!"

"Inuyasha!?"

"She's alive!"

Kagome watched from where she supposed was under ground. The group ran over a small hill, into her vision, in the bed of the dry ravine.

Upon sight of her still body Shippou fainted, the whole group stood stock still, and the hopeful smiles slid off their faces. It was as if a rain cloud had settled over the gang.

Inuyasha's mouth was all that moved, yet Kagome heard none of his ramblings. Sango broke the deafening silence, and broke Kagome's staring Contest with Inuyasha's now motionless face.

"Is…is she…"

I'm! Right! Here!" Kagome threw herself at the ground above her. "That's! Not! Me!"

"Inuyasha! I'm! Down! Here! You've gotta help me!" Her little fists pounded at the (bottom of the) ground, which felt like cool clay.

"Inuyasha!" Banging monotonously only succeeded in forming large bruises on Kagome's fists, although she felt nothing.

"Huh?" Miniscule green hands attached to her. The little clawed fingers into the skin on her limbs, neck, and torso. As her holders moved from below her, Kagome saw them clearly. The had round heads, and bug-like eyes. The looked like little impish demons.

"Wha-What do you want?" Chuckles and cackles erupted at her statement. The demons tightened their hold and descended. Noticing this started struggling. Let me go! Stop it!" She kicked repeatedly, but the creatures still succeeded with their strong holds.

"Inuyashaaa!" Her yell had transformed into a scream as the searing flames licked at her back.

Silence had fallen.

He stared at `Kagome'. Willing her body move; even if it was just the wind playing a joke on him.

SMACK!

"You hentai!" Sango's accusation broke Inuyasha's concentration. He turned a bored look at the couple behind him.

"Miroku," Inuyasha sounded unnaturally calm. It was the kind of calm that creeped out all of his `conscious' friends. "I would appreciate it if you showed a little more remorse at Kagome's `death'…

"Wait a minute!" He sniffed the air. Then fell onto all fours copying his action from before.

"Her living scent. It's…under the ground?" As he finished he faintly heard a muffled, what-would-be-a-n-earth-shattering scream.

"It came from down there too."

Claws slashed at the dirt below him. Little drops of what seemed like water dappled his face and arms.

In less than thirty seconds he had delved deep enough into the ground so that it covered the water beneath it like a fragile sheet of glass. The water below seemed abnormally bright blue and a shadowy person could barely be made out in the "water."

`Kagome? Please let it be you…' Inuyasha smirked. He could get her, and find out what the hell was going on, maybe. "It'll just take one more hit." His knuckles connected with the earth. His arms soon submerged into the water up past his elbow and his body froze.

The `water' was glowing around his arm. It seemed to creep slowly up his arm, and spread slowly to the rest of his body. Soon his entire body was emanating a bluish glow.

Sango, the only other conscious being, other than Kirara, watched in horror as the light slid from his body like raindrops. Inuyasha's body then went limp which almost made her scream.

Sprinting towards him she speculated that his arm was still submerged and shining. Approaching Kagome's body she saw the exact same liquid pooling under her head. "Dammit!"

(^*~`~*^)

"What the?" Looking at his surroundings, Inuyasha calculated that he must be in the water. Somehow. With Kagome…

Frantically his eyes darted to scan his surroundings. When his vision swept below him he spotted her, floating lifelessly.

It was eccentric beneath sea level (he hasn't even noticed that he's breathing under water). Inuyasha could feel the water pressure pushing down on him, beating in his sensitive ears. Even though he was sure it was because no one was (or could be) talking, he was oddly aware of the eerie silence under the water's surface. It made him feel as if her had lost one of his most dependable senses.

Swimming gracefully down to Kagome, he scooped the teen up and started toward the surface. Inuyasha's gaze was attached to the raven-haired girl cradled in his arms. He was entranced at how the glowing substance softened her already delicate expression and features.

"Itai!" Sharp pain shot through his head and Inuyasha almost dropped Kagome. Having proof that he had reached his destination, he decided to look up.

Yet again he almost lost his grip on Kagome. "This is so wrong." He was seeing himself. Like his reflection. He was abruptly aware of Kagome's light body weighing him down. So he let her descend into the water slightly, but kept her left hand tightly clutched in his right one.

With his free hand he reached up and lightly touched his `other' left hand. At the contact a tingling sensation was sent through the nerves in his arms. But like the water spread through his entire body. At that moment he felt a tremendous wind whip around his body and, even though he tried desperately to, he could not keep his eyes open. The wind seemed to lift his body like a stray dandelion seed. Within second he found himself pressed against something rocky, and solid. Inuyasha's eyes fluttered open and he turned his head to see Sango, carrying the unconscious houshi towards Kirara.

The fully transformed neko-youkai slowly sniffed then swiveled its head, purring at the sight of the hanyou. Lazily gazing back at his arm he saw it still enveloped in water, clutching to Kagome's hands, suspending her in the water.

He sat up as much as he could, still keeping his arm in the water, the arm that was devoid of all feeling. He was afraid to move his arm even the tiniest bit, not knowing what it would do to the futuristic girl attached to it.

"Inuyasha!" He heard a gleeful shout and swiveled in time to see Sango drop Miroku (who was being lifted on to Kirara) and rush over to him.

"You're all right!" He nodded. "Do you know what's going on?" This time he shook his head, keeping mute.

"But, I have to get Kagome," their gazes were drawn to the girl in the water, "To her body."

Sango nodded but was asking herself the same question as the hanyou: How?
