Chapter Four~*
Wandering-Minds
By: Demonchic_K
Flames encircled the trio of companions. Shippou was perched frightenedly on Miroku's shoulder, who was back-to-back with Sango. The two humans surveyed the inferno around them, searching for weak points.
Shrieks were heard around them but the world beyond the flamage was inky, unknown, black. Lost shadows fleeted across their vision.
Sango scanned the flames. A tickling sensation brushed against her neck. Swiveling head she saw the shivering Kisune. His tail was twitching antsily.
`Wait,' thought Sango looking back at the kit.
"I have a plan," She whispered softly to her companions.

Kagome stood alone, surrounded by nothing. Darkness engulfed her but looking at the ground she saw that a spotlight of some kind was focused on her from above.
She yelled a broken "help!" Silence. Her voice made as much sound as the clouds, no noise emitted her mouth.
While the teenager began to freak out, trees began to be put together. Bit by bit, she became surrounded by them.
"Kagome," a cold male voice called. `Wait!' She knew that voice.
Kagome was frantic now. She stood and fled into the forest around her.
"Kill him."
As the voice echoed Kagome stumbled into something. Peering up, she saw that the something was a very pissed-off hanyou.
"What the hell are you doing, wench?" Inuyasha gripped her shoulders, "Why did you wander off from the village? You know it's dangerous at the night."
He sounded angry, yet Kagome could decipher a hint of concern burrowed deep in his voice. She began to cry in fear and wrapped her arms around his torso. The voice came back.
"Kill Inuyasha."
The hanyou embraced the sobbing girl, trying to keep her from crying. Just as his arms circled her he felt a sharp pain in her chest and back.
Inuyasha immediately pulled away. Only to see the tear-stained face of a frightened girl, and a glowing sacred arrow protruding from his chest.
"Ka-Kagome?" He choked out.
Kagome stood as though she had not heard him, or the silence around them, a cold expression replacing her tears. The black and silver kimono she now wore was heavily stained in his crimson blood.
But just as her gaze landed on the incredulous, dying, inuyoukai, the tears stained her eyes again. Her clothes reverted back to her school yukata and instantly she was trying to help him again. A sharp pain blossomed in her back and spread through the rest of her body so that she was immobile.
"INUYASHA!"
That's how she woke up; screaming and crying hysterically.
"Kagome! Kagome!" Opening her eyes, she was greeted by a frantic Inuyasha shaking her shoulders almost violently.
Immediately realizing that her experience was dream, Kagome took to squeezing the life out of Inuyasha. Since he was half demon it didn't affect him, but he could smell her fear drop as she clung to him.
Slowly, his arms circled around her small frame. He made the motion to pull her to him in a comforting hug, but stopped short. Pressing his hand to her back again.
There it was again.
"Kagome," he whispered gently. She looked up at him, her expression much calmer than before. Kagome's soft brown eyes seemed to seize his gaze, Inuyasha's wide eyes seemed to be stuck in them.
"Inuyasha?" The hanyou's head shook as he was pulled from the strange staring contest.
Inuyasha seemed reluctant to continue, "Can I look at your bandages for a minute?"
A blush appeared over her cheeks almost reflexively by now.
"Umm…well…"
"I only need to see your back," Inuyasha stated. This helped her stop stuttering but her blush flared even more since she could tell what had run through his mind. The reason her had restated the question…he knew what she had been thinking.
Not trusting her voice to not falter, she clumsily crawled to stand up, facing away from the curious inuyoukai.
Inuyasha carefully lifted Kagome's white blouse from her back only to see more white from her bandages. The bandages he had applied the other day were still crisp and white. Her skin bordering the strips was extremely pale. Yet as he laid a cool hand over a patch of pale skin, he felt it was warm. Too warm. Especially since her skin was normally much darker.
Trailing his hand down to her bandages. Inuyasha felt that her bandages were warmer. It felt as if a fir had been set and the hot coals placed under the wrappings.
Kagome, who had just started gaining control over her embarrassed state, wasn't doing too well. When Inuyasha's hand pressed against her back, her eyes widened and the blush returned in full.
She felt his hands trail down to the bandages and shivered at the lost warmth. But when his hand pressed again she became aware of something. A very bad (and creepy) something.

Sango recited her plan to the others as the dragon demolished the village around them. There were fewer screams heard as they prepared the plan.
"Ready Shippou?" The kit nodded with a serious expression etched into his childish features.
Sango readied Hiraikotsu on her back. Miroku, she noticed, was tensed and she prayed that they got free. If they didn't no one would know and she didn't want to think of Kagome's reaction to all their deaths.
Kirara was positioned at their appointed weak spot. Near her, Miroku held his staff out and she could see an ofuda crushed in his hand. Shippou was awaiting the signal from the Taijiya. His little fists were curled around tuft's of Kirara's fur.
Sango moved to fling her boomerang harshly through the appointed weak spot. Just as the weapon broke through the ring of fire Shippou and Kirara darted over.
Kirara had lodged her burning paws into the weakened area as the kitsune launched his foxfire. Combined, the attack weakened the spot so it was only about two feet tall. Immediately the taijiya leaped onto the neko-youkai and over the fire, with Miroku following and just barely clearing the flames.
He and Sango stood on the other side as Shippou rode Kirara over the same weakened spot.
An already weakened Kirara went with Shippou to head for a tall tree near the fire.

Inuyasha remained still, his hand resting against the warmth of the bandages. He could feel Kagome tense, and knew that she had felt it too. Her fear and confusion were evident in her scent and on her face, which was turned slightly facing the hanyou behind her.
`Inuyasha?' She wanted so badly to ask him. Ask him anything. But it felt as if a small whisper would shatter her surroundings and cause complete disaster. Somehow.
He was scared. Inuyasha wasn't sure if he should cut the bandages off and reveal whatever was on her back. Or leave it a mystery. Whichever was safer?
For minutes they just sat together. Eventually Inuyasha couldn't take it anymore. "Should I cut them?" He asked. His soft voice had brought Kagome back to Earth and out of the recesses of her mind. She had been zoning out and wondering the same thing.
"I don't know," she answered. Truthfully, Kagome's mind was on the subject of their distress and curiosity. The most prominent thought in her head was that she couldn't feel it. Her entire back was numb. And somehow, the heat that was numbing her was not just on her back, but everywhere. All over her body.
It felt as though there was something sending trails of tingling warmth throughout her entire body.
"You're not helping," Inuyasha growled softly.
Kagome sighed, "I guess you should, I mean, we're going to have to replace the bandages anyway."
`Alright' Inuyasha thought preparing himself. He slowly ripped through the fabric with his claws. This continued strip-by-strip, layer-by-layer. Eventually Inuyasha got to the last row. The hanyou slit them and peeled the bandages off, along with a gauze patch (I think that's right?).
Inuyasha gasped. Kagome's questions and worried rants sounded so distant as he stared at her bare back.
"…and what if I'm gonna die. Or maybe there's a demon that was trying to cook and eat me. And I could've A-A!" Kagome squeaked as she realized that she was only half-dressed. `Which means I'm half-naked,' "You could have told me you perverted jerk…"
Yet again the moment was getting to her and yet again she was being ignored.
"It's a spider," he said dazedly. The girl looked at him. He had finally talked! Then she realized what he had just said.
"A SPIDER!!!!!" Kagome let loose a shriek that she was sure Sango and Miroku could hear as well.
"KAGOEM! Stop!"
The girl shut her mouth reflexively, cutting short the hell-raising scream. Kagome's eyes sought out Inuyasha's. Fear was all she saw, and it made her want to scream again. What in the world could have the scared the fearless (well almost) hanyou.
"Inuyasha?" Her voice shook and was almost too soft too hear.
"It's a spider…scar…"
