Running for their lives....

Kagome glanced out the window of the small Scion out into the night. Not much could be seen past the lightly tinted glass. No street lights were on the county road this late at night. She knew there should be forests, tall evergreens, oaks, and vining flowers passing by in a blur of eighty mile per hour movement, but she could see none. Not at two in the morning.

“Do you know where we are currently at?” She asked her chauffeur.

“Somewhere in Mississippi, I guess.” Came the lower voice of a short female horse demon. The one inch cracked window allowed the second hand smoke to escape so her passengers wouldn't have to smell it. The pains of being the only smoker in the car.

Kagome sighed and tried to sit more comfortably in the compact vehicle. She tried to sleep more then three hours, but worry and fear clouded her mind, making it hard to rest. It can do that when you are running for your life.

Yes, she is running for her life. With sad tired eyes, she turned to check on her best friend, Sango, who currently lie in the back seat, wrapped up in a blanket to ward off the chill of the fall breeze working its way into the window. Even though she seems to be resting better then her, dark shadows under her closed eyes said it isn't a good fruitful rest. It is her fault really, dragging in her poor friend into this shitty mess. Sango just happened to be there at the wrong time. Damn it. She should have told her to walk away when she had the chance. Now she is on the run with them.

She turned back in her seat and stared over the dashboard, adopting the headlights beaming out in front of them as more entertainment then the side windows. At least she can see the road a few feet in front of them.

The short demon driving along to mid-nineties techno music gave her friend a sidelong glance. “Hey,” she croaked, physical weariness evident in her warm voice. “We will make it.”

Kagome gave Lain a tiny smile that she heard her and tried to rest against the passenger window, hoping sleep would once again claim her. It has been three days of driving. Not for Sango or her driving, but for Lain. And the pretty horse was running on energy drinks, menthol cigarettes, and currently a techno theme from the old movie, Mortal Combat. An odd combination, but hell, when one needed to evade sleep, they will do anything it took to stay up. Lain's only priority at this time is to get them as far from the ones trying to chase them down to one person that might have a small chance in hell to help them out. An agent with the government, Sesshoumaru. The brother of her best friend, Inuyahsa.

To say she was excited over this would be the understatement of the year. His older brother is as cold as her marble floor in the bathroom of her house... Well her former house. The terrorist group currently on her rear saw fit to blow the place up right after she left. Kagome frowned on that. She really liked her house. Pretty little ranch style place with contemporary style going throughout it. Damn her curiosity at what she found. Really, she needed to stop that part of herself. Next time she felt like snooping around some email she intercepted, let it not be a terrorist's email. And let it not be one that had as much, if not more, hacking skills then herself. Better yet, perhaps she shouldn't have left her mother's shrine and gotten into computers to begin with.

If it wasn't for Lain, an FBI agent, then she would have been in that house when it blew up. Not to mention Sango, too. Her friend of six years was nothing more then a software engineer and totally innocent in this whole mess. She just happened to be at the house when she was dragged from it in the wee hours of the morning. Lain found it logical to drag her along too because Sango had seen the email as well. Wouldn't do to have even more people that can be would-be targets laying around for the picking.

Lain picked up another cigarette from the pack sitting on the dashboard and lit it up. The demon pulled a long drag from it and let the smoke exit out her nose. The blue colored cloud made its way out the window and disappeared out into the cool night air. “When we get to Georgia, I want you to stay close. Agent Takashi will be waiting for us at a disclosed location. He will be helping us from there on out. We need to get you under protection as soon as possible.”

Kagome swallowed hard and nodded, knowing the demon could see her in the dimly lit interior of the XD. “I'm sorry,” she softly breathed out.

Lain, who knew Kagome through Inuyasha, smiled softy at her. She took her hand off the gear shift and patted her hand. “ Hey, hackers like us do shit like that, you know? We get curious and peek into shit that we shouldn't. Most the time we don't get caught, but hell, why do you think I work for the feds? It is because I got caught. And I was lucky. If I wasn't so damn good at it, I would be rotting in a max security prison.”

Kagome vaguely wondered if this was meant for comfort, but it didn't make her feel any better. Instead it made her realize her mess up even more. She didn't work for the government. She worked for a nice company that paid her well for being an security engineer and keep the company from people like herself. Besides, how was she supposed to know she had a terrorist was living four houses down from her. Such a nice guy, too.

She gave a weak 'thanks' and closed her eyes hoping beyond anything sleep would finally claim her. Damn it if she didn't feel nasty. No bath, hardly any food except what she could grab from the passing convenience stores, and lots of coffee. That didn't help the bladder either. God, did she need to pee right now! But night time wasn't a time Lain would be kind enough to stop to let her do the small act of relief. She may be a demon, and have damn good hearing to boot, but there was no way she would let her two charges stop in the middle of the night, with poor lighting, so they could get shot.

“Rest,” Lian softly ordered. “It will be morning soon enough and we will make an early pit stop. I need to contact Miroku in the morning. Tell him where we are and how much longer we have to go.”

Kagome nodded again and relaxed her body. Soon, the long desired sleep took her and she dreamed. Not of sunny summers or pretty flowers, but of emails dictating how to blow up Golden Gate Bridges or how to take out some of the important politicians.

“Kagome.” A hand lightly shook her thin shoulder and caused the said woman to start.

Sango smirked at her, giving her an apologetic look. “Sorry, its just that we are making a pit stop. If your bladder feels like mine, you will be wanting it emptied just as fast as I do.”

Kagome glanced around the unfamiliar surroundings and took in the gas station they where currently sitting at. Near a gas pump to be exact. Her body lightly protested when she unclipped her seat belt and moved to get out of the seat. Sango was already out of the car, stretching like a cat that had been caged up for a day in a tiny create. She located Lain immediately. Only her angular bob could be seen on the other side of the car, filling up the tank with expensive gas.

The horse's deep brown hair shifted slightly in the breeze when she noticed Kagome exit the small white car. “Good morning, Girly.”

“Morning, Lain.” Kagome staggered some when she first started to walk. Her legs stiff from the position they acquired over the small mount of sleep she gained.

Kagome frowned as she ran a hand through her greasy hair. 'Ew. A bath would really be nice right about now.' A glance at Sango proved to show the woman didn't look any better than her in the looks department.

The two humans made their way into the gas station, making a b-line for the toilets. It felt so good to pee. Kagome giggled at Sango's comment that it felt better then sex to relieve herself. After that, they tired their best to clean their selves up in the small three stalled bathroom. From the dead roach over in the corner, it might not have been cleaned in a couple of days. Ew.

After purchasing some old coffee, both the females came out of the store and back to the car. Lain glanced around at their surroundings for anything suspicious. Making sure no one was being nosy, the horse pulled out a gun and handed it over to Sango. “Keep this near you and watch your surroundings well. I have to run inside and then go make a phone call from the phone booth.”

Sango nodded in understanding, but it still didn't make both the women comfortable. They hated when Lain had to leave them. But she needed to take care of herself and make a call from a phone other then her cell. They can be crossed to easy and the public phones proved to be a better source of contacting who she needed to.

Kagome stared at the automatic and made a face at it. Lain learned quickly that she didn't like the alternate form of protection and only handed it to Sango because she actually had some gun training. It still didn't make either feel any better about being left in the car. Alone.

Thankfully, Lain came back in a few minutes. They could see her looking around the whole time she stood at the phone, talking to who knows who. That was another thing Lain didn't do. Tell them what was going on. She told them the bare minimum. That was it. Every day they where on this wild chase and run, it only served to piss Kagome off more. Here quiet nature was starting to wear thin. Soon she will demand to be told what is going on. It is their lives, damn it!

They pulled out of the gas station and started off back onto the small county road again. Lain turned up the CD player and put on some Cardigans. She frowned as Favorite Game came on, booming through the speakers. “I got a hold of Miroku. He said Agent Takashi will be in Savanna, Georgia. He wont tell me more until we get closer. That will be one more day at the pace we are going. Should be faster, but we cant risk it on the major expressways.”

Kagome sighed. “Do you know what will happen when we get to him?”

The tone of her voice held more then just tired conversation. Lain knew what she wanted and even though she wanted to tell them more, there really wasn't much more to tell her. “No. He didn't tell me any more then that.”

They weren't much more then a mile down the road before a small red car pulled out of a tiny dinner and started to follow them.

“I said don't you know...You say you don't know...I say...Take me out!” Lain sang out in the car to a song that vibrated the Scion from the bass it contained. Kagome and Sango smiled at her attempt to entertain them.

“Come on!” The horse boomed out over the radio. “Sing with me! You know you like this song, too. So catchy.”

“No, please!” Sango chimed in. “You are doing a wonderful job all on your own.”

Kagome laughed out and nodded in earnest. “Much so. Please continue to make a goober of yourself.”

Lain falsed a hurt look. Putting a hand between her ample breast to add to the act. “But I thought you loved my voice! Now I see it was all but an act.” fake sobs fallowed. “I thought you loved me...Oh poor me!”

Sango stuck her head between the seats and peered at Lain over her broad shoulder, “We do love you, just not your choice of music.”

“Hey! I beg to differ. I listen to wonderful music. You just have no taste.” Lain held her head up, sticking her chin out in a show of superiority.

Kagome smiled. “Oh we have taste. Just not YOUR taste.”

“Ah,” Lain purred. “But , my dear Kagome, my taste is refined. It is because I am much older then you. Seven hundred years of experience.” Lain leaned over, wiggling her eyebrows. “And in much more then just music. I have been told I am a wild beast in bed.”

Sango busted out in a gut wrenching laugh, while Kagome chocked a little on her soda she lifted to her lips and swigged at a very inopportune time. “And a dirty old lady at that, too!” Kagome managed around coughs.

Lain gifted a bright smile and opened her mouth up with a witty comeback, but paused before it even came out. Her grin faded into a frown as she straightened up and glanced back in the rear view mirror. Kagome noticed this and glanced back over Sango's head to see what caused the horse to spook.

“What is it?” Sango questioned first.

“I don't know. I have been purposely taking round about roads and this red car is still behind us.”

Pure dread snaked it's way down the humans' spins as they cautiously glanced back. There was, indeed, a small red car about four car lengths behind them. The windows where tinted, making it hard to see the driver in the front seat clearly. All they could make out was a man with sun glasses on.

Suddenly the driver got closer, making Kagome turn wide-eyed to her protector. “He is gaining on us!”

“No,” Lain confirmed. “I am slowing down. If he is just some dude driving the same way we are, he will pass.”

Sango turned a worried face to Kagome, but sat back and put her seatbelt back safely in place. She took it off to mess with Lain, but now had a sinking feeling that perhaps she needed to put it back on. Both females hoped it was just that. Some random guy driving the same way. It had been so smooth so far. Well, except for the bombing of Kagome's lovely home.

To all of the occupants in the XD, the red car behind them slowed down to match their pace. Lain's nostrils subconsciously flared. Much like the prey demon she is. Hoping to get some sort of sent on the wind to give her the warning she so needed. Kagome glanced over to her friend and gently grabbed onto her arm. “Lain? What is going on?”

“Hold on...,” Lain breathed. She glanced back into the rear view mirror and started to excellerate the Scion. It was gradual speed. She didn't want to scare anyone. But dread started to wrap icy fingers around her stiff spine when the car ran at 90 miles per hour, passing slower cars, and the small red vehicle kept its pace.

Lain exited off onto a smaller two lane highway and pressed the petal to the floor. Kagome gasped softly and drug her fingers into the seat. She glanced back and Sango showed no improvement. Her best friend paled and sunk down into her. Possibly wanting to make herself tiny and unseen.

The red car followed them and sped up to catch them. “Damn it!” Lain swore. They where so close! How did they find them? Lain suspected they must have traded off vehicles from the get go. Probably been tracing the phone calls, too. They must have known they where only a day away from their meet up place...

A bullet wizzed past the driver window. “FUCK!” Lain swerved lightly and down shifted her white car. The extra speed helped, but this was about getting as much space between them and their pursuers God knew they where not in a race car. Not a government issued car either with its nice bullet proof windows and dark tinted glass. No V-8 engine. No they didn't want to attract attention to the group after them. They wanted to appear like a bunch of ladies on vacation.

The horse reached forward quickly pulled a cigarette out of the pack and lit it up. After pulling a nice big drag, she rolled down the window and let the smoke fly out the window. Sango and Kagome both gave her an incredible look.

“What are you trying to do!” Yelled Sango. “Kill them with second hand smoke!?!”

Lain just smirked at her. “Sorry dear, but I need a smoke right now.”

At that time another bullet hit the driver's side view mirror and shattered the glass. Sango screamed out for Kagome to get down and drew Lain's attention. “Give me a gun!”

Lain considered it, but then shook her head no. “Just stay down! If I get hit, I have a higher chance at surviving. Keep your ass's down!”

Sango had to bite back a remark. Damn that high headed horse. Just then a bullet entered from the back window, buzzed over Sango's right shoulder, and exited out the front window.

Cigarette hanging out the side of her mouth, Lain pulled out a pistol from her knee-high boots and quickly turned around, causing Sango to lower her head down towards her knees, hands covering her head. “Motherfucker! This is my car! No one, and I mean no one shots my car!”

The shots pulled out of Lain's pistol vibrated throughout the small compact, crashing out the already shot at rear window, causing both humans to cringe and press palms harder into their ears to block out the offending noise. A mumbled curse was all the women needed to know that the demon missed her target.

Lain bared her fangs and slammed on her breaks. The quick action caused their attacker to swerve around Lain. Right where she wanted him to be. “Hehe...,” she gleefully smirked, “Ready to play my game now?”

Kagome raised her head up, curiosity and fear taking over. At that moment, the attacker swung around and aimed his gun at Kagome, getting a perfect target of the small dark haired hacker. Lain noted his aim, swerved, hit the gas, and right as he pulled his trigger, the bullet missed Kagome and went straight into Lain's right shoulder. She roared out in pain, cigarette falling down to the floor board of the car.

“Oh my god! Lain!” Kagome cried as she took in the demon's black blood oozing out the small hole in her shoulder.

Lain's thought process clouded with pain and anger, ranging from 'Oh. My. God. He shot me' to 'Damn, that really, really hurt!'. Vision going red, she hit the gas, shaking off Kagome who desperately tried to cover her injury with a t-shirt she wasn't wearing.

The small hacker flinched and felt her holy power rise to the call. Lain was loosing it. The horse actually started to shift into her true form. “Not in your true form, Lain!”

Fur now covered her face and her lower face extended out in a sickening reshifting of bones. Fangs bared, red eyes, and dark brown and black fur gave the appearance of some kind of hell's creature then the once good natured FBI agent. Her neck grew thick and long as she clutched the steering wheel in a death grip.

“Lain!” Sango cried. “Please, you have to calm yourself or you will destroy the car and us in the process.”

Kagome noted that the would-be assassin was getting closer again, not because he slowed, but because Lain was picking up speed. 'No,' she thought to herself, fear gripping her soul, 'she will kill us all in this state.' Decision made, Kagome pulled forth her priestess powers. It was hard. Sweat formed on her brow. It had been a good while since her last need of the gift. Kagome forced herself anyways. Her trembling hands glowed a soft blue and gently laid them on Lain's bleeding upper arm.

Lain's red eyes penetrated Kagome's in sheer anger. How dare someone interfere with her chase! She let out a roar that sounded like nothing of a horse and nipped at the hacker. Kagome paid no mind though. Instead she let her power flow slowly into the wound and started whispering softly to her.

“Let him go, Lain. It will be okay. No one will hurt us anymore.” Kagome gently stroked the horse's powerful neck as she kept one hand on the nasty wound. “Please, Lain?”

Sango casted worried glances at Kagome and Lain, but kept her attention on the vehicle now starting to gain distance. “Kagome?” She whispered.

Kagome softly smiled at her best friend, but kept on rubbing the horse demon. The car slowly came to a stop and stalled. Sango put on the parking break and picked up the forgotten pistol. Kagome nodded as Sango got out of the car and checked around. The red car far off and gone from sight.

Lain, still very much in her beast state, leaned her nose over onto Kagome's shoulder, calming under her menstruations. A small whinnie giving the only sign that she is relaxing. Sango came back to the to the Scion and addressed Kagome. “Is she finally calming?”

“Yeah. She is. We need to get back to some place safe to we can clean her up, get her to a hospital or something.” Kagome was at a total loss of what to do. It isn't an everyday thing to be on the run for your life. There really wasn't a book for dummies out there for it. Shifting bones drifted her thoughts back to the demon beside her. Now sitting once again in human form, Lain leaned her forehead onto the dashboard.

“That fucking hurt like a bitch...,” She breathed through clenched teeth.

Kagome picked up the dropped shirt and removed her hand, observing what she healed. The wound stopped bleeding, but a bullet still called her shoulder home. They need to get it out. “What do you want us to do?”

“We will have to stop for the night. I need to have the bullet removed so it can finish healing up.” Lain started the XD back up and waited for Sango to get back safely into her seat. There was a small dirty looking hotel a few miles back. Not the best of places, but something is better then nothing.

“Shouldn't we go to a hospital?” Kagome tried to encourage. Damn that email...

“Too risky. I will be fine.” With that said, Lain turned around, keeping a constant visual the whole entire time they drove the hotel.
