Chapter 10
Kagome sat in the cafeteria long after Yuka had left. The demon had given her a lot to think about. She lost track of the time and when she looked up at the small clock on the wall behind the serving she noticed that it was almost eight thirty and she had to run if she was going to have time to kill Inuyasha and make it to work on time.
She quietly got up from her seat and picked her tray up. She then dumped it into the trash can and walked out the door into the hallway.
By the time she had reached the doctor's lounge she had thought a lot about Inuyasha and her feelings towards him. She knew she had a crush on the handsome doctor, but love? She had been trying so hard not to fall in love with him.
She slowly opened the door to the lounge and walked in to find the infamous doctor sound asleep on the sofa and felt herself begin to get angry. How could he sleep when all of this was happening?
Inuyasha awoke to a very loud, very angry woman screaming his name. He jumped and fell off the couch.

Sesshomaru sat quietly in his office looking over Shippo's chart. He looked over each of the test results, the CT and the MRI. He found that he had much the same conclusions that his brother had. What surprised him was that his brother wanted him to do the surgery. Obviously this boy and his mother meant something to his little brother, too bad the idiot won't admit it to himself.
Once he had finished looking over the chart he turned his attention back to the clinic. He remembered that his younger brother had a friend who opened a clinic a few years back, maybe he would have some clue as too a good clinic director. He would have to make a call.
He quickly pushed the button on the intercom in his office, “Jaken I need the number for one, Miroku he's a friend of Inuyasha's and I believe he has privileges in the surgery wing.” He then let the button go.
“Why yes, Sesshomaru I shall get right to work on this pressing work, thank you for your trust in me.”
Sesshomaru had heard enough and calmly walked out into the office, bopped Jaken on the head, walked back into his office and sat to wait for Jaken to return with Miroku's phone number.

Inuyasha looked up at Kagome and felt his anger boiling. “What the hell!”
Kagome stared at him, “how could you have let me oversleep for work, huh? I could lose my job over this! And I'm now getting ready to miss another shift!”
“Is that what this is about?” Inuyasha asked, agitated.
“Yes! What else would it be about?” She yelled back.
“Don't worry about it ok?” He asked, laying back down.
Kagome stomped over, “don't worry about it? Don't worry about it? I could just have lost BOTH of my jobs, which are the only reasons that Shippo and I haven't starved to death, not to mention the only way I'm going to be able to pay for these hospital bills and you tell me not to worry about it!”
Inuyasha almost let himself smile, she was cute when she was angry, not that he'd ever tell her that. He forced the smile down and looked her in the eyes.
“I'm tellin' ya not to worry about it cause ya don't need to worry about it.”
“Oh really, well what am I supposed to do when I get fired huh?”
“Dammit woman will you just shut up and let me talk? You didn't get fired cause I called in and told um' I'm ur doctor and you were sick and before you ask I called the grocery store too.”
Kagome looked at him in shock, but quickly recovered. “Oh yea, well who gave you the right to do that, huh?”
“Bitch, I'm your son's doctor, he needed you here and you wouldn't even wake up when I tried to get you up so either you can appreciate it or I can stop driving you to work.”
Kagome shut up for a moment. He did what? “Wha, what did you do?” She asked confused.
“I said, I called both of your jobs and told them that Shippo needed you here and that you couldn't go to work.”
Inuyasha looked at her, she was in shock and he began to get a little worried when she didn't come out of it for over a minute.
Kagome was processing, she had heard him when he said that he called her jobs, but she also heard him saying that he tried to wake her up, and now that she thought about it she wasn't in Shippo's bed when she woke up, but another bed in the same room. Maybe he was in love with her? Maybe Yuka was right? Suddenly she couldn't take the pressure anymore and passed out.
Inuyasha rushed over and caught her before she hit the ground.
Inuyasha carried Kagome to the nurse's station, he had to find Keade. She was the only one he knew he could trust to care for a human woman in the hospital. She was actually one of the only humans that worked in the hospital.
“Hag! I need your help.” He screeched. Keade looked up.
“Oh my Inuyasha what did you do?”
“What do ya mean what did I do? I didn't do nothin'. She just passed out.”
“Ok well lets get her in a bed quickly and you'll need to call your old friend Miroku.”
“What, why do I need him?”
“Because you need someone who's expertise is in human illnesses and you are the only one in this hospital. Seeing as you cannot care of her yourself because you are too involved I just thought that you would prefer him.” Keade explained.
“Well then let's get her a bed.” Inuyasha yelled.
Keade shook her head and said, “follow me.”

Miroku literally ran into the hospital. Inuyasha had told him that Sango's friend had passed out, although she did have normal vital signs. As much as he wanted to say that he was genuinely concerned about the young woman, he had to admit he wanted to see Sango again and thought might be there.
When he got there he was greeted by Inuyasha picking him up at the door, throwing him over his shoulder and carrying him to the stairwell, where he proceeded to carry him up the stairs, through a hallway and drop him in front of a bed.
When he got up off the floor he picked up Kagome's chart and began to look through it. Then he began to check her vitals. After forming a diagnosis he turned to Inuyasha.
“It appears that she is simply sleeping. Has she been sleeping normally lately?”
“I guess so, she slept all day. She was a little tired and I couldn't get her to wake up this morning.”
“Okay, well I think that she's exhausted. I'm thinking that we need to pump her with fluids to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated, and then if everything looks good you can release her when she wakes up and has kept down at least two meals.”
Inuyasha looked him weirdly, “so it's just exhaustion?”
“Well sleep is very important to the human body. That coupled with the stress of Shippo, her finances and so on is bound to take its toll. Come on Inuyasha you know all of this, you took the same classes I did.”
Inuyasha nodded, but Miroku knew his best friend well enough to know when something was wrong.
“Inuyasha, are you okay?” He asked, while turned to the desk, writing in Kagome's chart. That way Inuyasha couldn't make eye contact.
“Keh.”
“Inuyasha.” He said exaggerated.
“Keh, I'm fine.”
“Oh please, I haven't seen you this upset since the funeral.” Miroku said, still turned away from his friend.
“Ok fine, I'm a little worried ok. Are you happy now, Miroku?” He replied, stretching Miroku's name out.
“About what?” He asked, as he turned to Inuyasha.
“I don't know ok?”
“Really, because I think you do.”
“Kagome.” Inuyasha said so softly Miroku barely heard him.
“What about miss Kagome?”
“I don't know,” Inuyasha said softly and then continued, “if I tell you something do you promise not to tell anyone?”
Miroku nodded while showing off his biggest grin.
“I mean it Miroku, no one. If I find out you told anyone I'll string you up on the flag pole outside by your balls.” Inuyasha said, his voice hardening.
Miroku gulped, but nodded.
“I think, um I think, oh hell I like Kagome ok. It's just so confusing. I don't understand, I promised myself after Kikyo I'd never fall in love again.”
Miroku was giving him his weird, full mouthed, lecherous grin, and Inuyasha decided that he didn't want to know what was happening in that perverted brain of Miroku's.
“One word Miroku and I'll knock your teeth out.”
Miroku stood there for a moment and then walked over to Inuyasha and stood next to him. “So you think you're in love with her?”
“I don't know.”
“Ok, so what do you know?”
“I know that Kikyo broke my heart, I know that Kagome is sweet and kind and that I'm attracted to her. But I also know that she would never like me back.”
“Inuyasha, I think you're wrong. I think Kagome likes you back.”
“Keh, what the hell do you know anyways?”
“I know more than you think Inuyasha. Look, I'm not saying that you should go sweep her off her feet, but I am saying that you should tell her how you feel and let her make her own decision. She may surprise you.”
Inuyasha nodded, but moved his eyes to Kagome. Miroku could see the sadness in them and realized that Inuyasha wasn't over Kikyo yet. He had never liked Kikyo, she was a rich sob and rarely showed any kind of emotion. She had been forced into her life as a lawyer by her overbearing father and they all knew she resented him for it. However, her father threatened to cut her off if she quit her job before she got married. Miroku had a sneaking suspicion that the only reason she even accepted Inuyasha's date proposal was because it was the most promising prospect for getting her out of her horrible life that she had at the time. In Miroku's opinion, it was time for Inuyasha to move on.
He looked back over to the girl and handed Inuyasha her chart. “If you need me again you can page me.”
Inuyasha nodded, and Miroku left the room.
As Miroku was getting on the elevator he received a page, so he went back over to the nurse's station and called the number.
It took all of three seconds before the line picked up. “Hello? This is Miroku did you just page me?”
“Why yes Miroku, this is Sesshomaru, Inuyasha's older brother. I was wondering if you would come into my office for a meeting tonight before you leave the building.”
“Why yes, I believe I could.” Miroku replied, highly confused. What would Sesshomaru want with him? And how did he know that Miroku was in the building?
Miroku went down to the hospital director's office. When he got there, he was greeted by a short green toad-looking thing that he guessed was a kappa. The imp gave him an irritated glance and kept muttering, “I don't understand why Sesshomaru deals with these pathetic humans.”
Jaken led him into the office, where he found Sesshomaru sitting and looking at some employee files.
“Well, Miroku it's been a while hasn't it?”
“Yes it has.”
“Well, go ahead and ask why you're here, I know you want to.”
“Ok, well then why am I here?”
“You are here because I was forced to let the hospital's clinic director go. I need a recommendation on a new director.”
Miroku was quiet for a minute. “Well, I know a few people, if you want I can call around and see of any of them are interested.”
“That is satisfactory. Call my cell phone if you find anyone interested.”
“Well, if that's it I'll be going.”
Sesshomaru nodded and returned to his files.

Inuyasha had Kagome moved into Shippo's room and kept watch over the two all night. He sat against the wall and tried to doze off, but the thought that something might happen to one of them stopped him. He couldn't leave the two of them vulnerable and unprotected all night.
Inuyasha tried to get his mind off of what Miroku had said, but he couldn't. Should he just tell her and let her decide? Would she surprise him? He snorted at that the thought; everything that wench did surprised him. But would she accept him when no one else ever really has? Something told him she would, but the fear of rejection was just too strong.
What else could he do to protect his own heart, but to let her go?

Ayame was beginning to regret ever telling Kouga about her chance meeting with Kagome. At first he had been skeptical that it was even Kagome, especially since “she just didn't have meetings with strange men.” Then, after convincing him that it was Kagome he got upset.
She understood she really did. She had been forced to leave her relationship with a young wolf demon named Jacob from the southeastern American wolf tribe to marry him. She even thought she loved Jacob, but her grandfather and Kouga's grandfather had made this arrangement years ago. They wanted the two of them to marry and have at least one child.
At first she had been upset, but then after learning that her grandfather was seriously ill and that the two packs needed to be allied she decided that she would do everything her grandfather asked of her.
What she didn't understand was why Kouga agreed to marry her if he wasn't even going to try to make the marriage work. He didn't even like to sleep in the same bed as her.
She sighed; he was sitting alone in his office again. She had proposed that he go talk to Kagome. She thought that maybe explaining what had happened and possibly getting her forgiveness would help him move on. But he didn't like that idea. She really didn't know what to do.

Morning came far too early for Kagome's tastes. The light from the window assaulted her and she found it difficult to sleep any longer. Wait, how long had she been asleep? She didn't even remember going to bed after yelling at Inuyasha.
Suddenly she jumped up, looking around trying to figure out what happened. Inuyasha was at her side in a matter of seconds. “Stupid wench, you shouldn't try to sit up that fast. Your body is still healing.”
Her body was healing? Healing from what? She tried to ask him, but her throat was too dry. Inuyasha looked down and noticed her difficulty in speaking and thought that now was the best time to talk to her, when she couldn't talk back.
“Kagome, I'll give you some water, but first I want to talk to you. You said at the restaurant that you were taking care of yourself, but you haven't been have you?”
Kagome stared at him, her throat was just so very dry and she didn't understand what he was doing. Why wouldn't he give her water?
“Kagome? Are you listening?”
She looked up at him and her head began to swim. It was just so dark and cloudy. Why was everything spinning?
Inuyasha sighed, maybe now wasn't the best time to talk to her. He walked over and picked up the glass that was sitting on the sink for just this occasion and quickly filled it with water. He picked up the straw sitting on the tray next to her bed and stuck it in the water. He sat the glass down and walked over to her and sat her up and then reached for the glass. He helped her drink and pulled it back when she had had enough. He sat the glass back down and laid her back down.
He went back over and sat against the wall to wait for her to wake up.

It was already eleven thirty and Kagome still wasn't awake yet. Inuyasha knew that it was normal, but still it really upset him that she was in the situation to begin with. He simply couldn't get his head around the thought that she had let herself get that bad nor that he had let her get that bad.
She was in his hospital, her son was his patient, they literally spent day and night together, he drove her to and from work at both of her jobs and he didn't know that she was getting this bad. He was supposed to be a doctor. A doctor helps people, takes care of people, so why is it that even though he had put every last ounce of energy into this one patient, he still couldn't take care of one human wench?
He must be a horrible doctor.
Inuyasha sighed, one more thing he thought he was good at that he wasn't. Why wasn't there one thing that he could do better than everyone else?
He shook the thoughts out of his head. It wasn't the time for self loathing. He had to get Shippo prepped, and then wake Kagome up and let her hug him and do all of that motherly crap that she was so good at. As much as he knew she needed to sleep, he also knew that if she woke up to find that her son was in brain surgery and he didn't wake her up before they did the surgery he'd be in deep shit.
He went to the supply closet and grabbed all of the things he'd need and then scrubbed his hands and put on gloves before going back into the room.
After he prepped Shippo he pulled he gloves off and went over to wake Kagome up. He tried shaking her gently, but that didn't work and he ended up shaking her pretty harshly.
She came too in stages. The first stage involved her groaning and rolling over, only to find a claw shaped hand rolling her back over. The second stage involved her opening her eyes and then quickly closing them and rolling back over. Once again Inuyasha rolled her back over. The third and final stage involved her opening her eyes and asking Inuyasha what the hell was going on.
“Well, fine then I'll just let ya sleep through Shippo's surgery.” Suddenly, Kagome jumped up.
“It's already time for the surgery?”
“Yea, so I thought you might wanna be there when I take him upstairs, but be careful I've already got him prepped.”
Kagome nodded, but proceeded to try and get out of bed. Inuyasha looked over and saw her putting the rail down. He stomped over to her.
“Oh no, you aren't going anywhere until I clear it, you understand?”
“But, Inuyasha I need to get over to Shippo.”
“That's why I was gonna bring him over here to you. Your not getting out of that bed until I say your better, and considering your pupils are still dilated your not better. Now lay back down.” Inuyasha put his hand over her stomach and pushed her back down.
Kagome wanted to argue with him, but laying there she realized that she didn't have the energy too. She felt weak, too weak to hold her own head up.
Inuyasha pulled Shippo's bed over to Kagome's and helped her sit up to run her fingers over his forehead. She was surprised by his tenderness in helping her sit up, but then again nothing this hanyou did could be predicted.
She starred at Shippo for a few minutes and then picked up his hand and kissed it. She didn't realize she was crying until she felt the tears on her cheeks. Inuyasha took Shippo's hand from her and wheeled him out.
He turned before the door closed and said, “don't get up, I'll be right back.”
Kagome nodded and laid back down.

Miroku sighed as he walked back into his apartment. A clinic director? Who could he get to do this job. His first thought was Inuyasha, but he wasn't so sure he could talk him into taking the job. It was an excellent position, the hospital paid well and he would get more time off than he did in the surgerical wing, but knowing Inuyasha he wouldn't take the job. He just had to find something to lure him into taking the job.
He went over and sat down of his sofa and picked up his phone. He really did need to speak with Inuyasha, but not before he spoke another special someone.
A feminine voice answered, "hey Miroku," and he melted.
"Hey sweetheart."

Inuyasha pushed Shippo's bed off of the elevator. He rounded the corner and looked on the board to see which OR they were in. After realizing that they were in OR 5 he pushed Shippo's bed into the room.
Sesshomaru was already waiting, having scrubbed up and the nurse's were currently sterilizing the equipment. He pushed Shippo over to the center of the room and lifted him on to the bed that was already there. He laid him face down, with his face poking through the hole.
After securing him to the bed, Inuyasha walked over and left the room.
Sesshomaru watched as Inuyasha handled Shippo with more care than he'd ever since his brother show. Inuyasha was normally such a rash man, full of passion but unable to show it. The fact that he had allowed his guard down told Sesshomaru more of what he already knew. That Inuyasha was in love with this Kagome.
Maybe he should meet this girl. After what happened with the last bitch it couldn't hurt to have a little conversation with the woman his brother is falling head over heels for. You know, too make sure nothing from their relationship could hurt the hospital.
000000000000000000000000
Inuyasha walked slowly as he returned to Kagome. She really needed to sleep, but he really wanted to talk to her. He may not be able to say the words or even hint at them, but he needed to know what she wanted form him. And more than that, he needed to know that she would be ok and that she would start taking care of herself.
It scared him shitless to think that she could have passed out at home or at work and he would know nothing about it, and that there would be no one to take care of her. The wench obviously needed a keeper, and if it took him admitting his feelings to her then he would do so. “As long as Kagome and Shippo are ok, then it doesn't matter what happens to me.” He said aloud, realizing it for the first time.
As he was walking, trying to find a way to tell Kagome a scent hit his nose that he thought he'd never smell again, Naraku.
What the hell was that bastard doing in Takahoushi Youkai anyway? He growled when he realized that Sesshomaru was here as well and operating on Shippo. If Naraku hurt Shippo, he'd rip him limb from limb. Sesshomaru could take care of himself, but maybe he should be warned?
He turned back around, to go and warn Sesshomaru about Naraku when a strange scent hit his nose. It was oddly sweet and it took him only a moment to realize what it was. It was a Inu stink bomb. Basically, a stink bomb that released any odor that has the same effect on Dog Demons as cat nip has on cats.
He quickly put his hand over his nose and ran towards the operating room Shippo was in.
When he got there, he quickly closed the door and ran to shut off the air vents. Sesshomaru looked at him as though he was crazy, but kept on with his job.
Inuyasha then ran over and grabbed a towel from the linens in the back and put it under the door.
“Naraku just sat off an Inu-stink bomb.”
Sesshomaru nodded.
“Wait, did you know that Naraku was here?”
“Yes, little brother I think I did, considering he is the new attending.”
Inuyasha stared at him for a minute. “So after everything he did to you, you took him back?”
Sesshomaru didn't even look up. He knew how Inuyasha felt about Naraku. Especially after everything that Naraku had put him through their last few months in college.
“No, I did not. We both were in the running for hospital director. I got the job but the board thought that his skills could be useful around here so they decided to give him an attending position.”
Inuyasha stared at his brother for a minute. How could he just sit back and let that happen? After all the shit Naraku out him through, after cheating on him, Inuyasha would have thought that Naraku would be long dead. Sesshomaru really must have some love for him deep down in his cold heart for his ex-lover for the guy to even be alive.
Inuyasha had been shocked to find out that his older brother was gay, but not upset by it. His mother raised him to be accepting of everyone. She had told him that it was hard for Sesshomaru to come out of the closet and even harder later on when people found out about it. His older brother had never left it get to him, at least in public. But Inuyasha always hated those people who said things about him behind his back. He and Sesshomaru may not get along, but no one deserves to be talked about behind their back.
Inuyasha looked at his brother and thought about continuing the conversation, but realized that it would only make him angry and the last thing he wanted to do was fight with Sesshomaru while he'd operating on Shippo's brain. So he grabbed a mask and went back outside the OR to wait with Kagome.
A/N: ok, here's chapter 10! I'll try to have eleven up by next Saturday.
