The front door creaked softly open. Bare feet padded through the apartment without a sound, a dark figure outlined by the faint light of the streetlamp beyond the window. Stumbling on a book lying on the floor, the figure hissed in pain, and promptly kicked the book away with a muttered curse. He eyed the door at the end of the hallway - he was so close! He should just make it - suddenly, the entire living room was filled with light… and he was caught!

 

“I… I… I can explain!” he stuttered, tripping over the book again in his haste to back away from the terrifying vision in front of him. It towered over him, took a deep breath… and immediately began the litany of Souta's crimes.

 

“Souta Higurashi!! Where were you?? It's friggin' one in the morning! What were you doing out so late? School finished, what, 10 hours ago? You could've called me! You'd better explain yourself or I swear I'll—"

 

Souta's older sister Kagome had a legendary temper, and the voice to boot. Both were fiery when roused, but there was no comparing with Kagome when she had built up a full head of steam. Though he was almost half a foot taller than her at 5'8" compared to her 5'3", he cowered before her as she continued to rave.

 

"Ten hours I've been waiting, Souta, ten hours! Why can't you answer your phone, for Kami's sake?"

 

Souta hesitantly interrupted Kagome's rant, "Oneesan? I'm sorry, I really am! It was urgent, I swear! Someone needed me at an emergency…" He trailed off.

 

Kagome fixed her younger brother with an ice-cold glare. "Oh really? And just who was this special 'someone', hmm?"

 

"Um… Kyoko. She wanted to talk…." he offered.

 

"Kyoko? Kyoko?" Kagome snarled. "You mean to tell me that you stayed out till one in the morning to 'bond' and have deep and meaningfuls with your little girlfriend? SOUTA! I was so worried! You could've been abducted, you could've died, I could be identifying your lifeless body lying on a cold metal slab in the morgue!"

 

"Okay, okay, calm down oneesan, calm down…Kami, oneesan, you're more frightening than Freddy Kruger," Souta sweat-dropped. Honestly…no wonder she's still single. Who on earth could put up with her ranting and raving?

 

"Young man, I suggest you get your act together or Kami help me I will— Freddy Kruger? Are you saying I'm hideously scarred and ugly??!!!"

 

Souta thought he'd better run into the safety of his room before his sister disemboweled him.

 

"SOUTAAAA!!!!"
