Chapter 3-Embracing Remembrance Alone

“How could I have gotten that question wrong? I just don't get it!” Kisho let out a frustrated cry as he neared the gates to his house. “And Kagome…how did she get it? That can't possibly have been the right answer! He always told me…someone's lying…either it's the answer key or he…no he knows…there's no way-”

“No way what?” The voice said questioningly, Kisho lifted his head up to see his father getting out of his car as he had rounded the gate to the long walk down to the semi circle in front of the mansion he shared with his father. The large house was side by side with the house that his uncle, aunt and cousins occupied. Startled by his father's presence, Kisho stammered to get his words out.

Kisho-Uh no way that…

“What happened this time?”

Kisho-Well you know how you always told me…about your name. That you were named after the hanyou pinned to the God Tree; well we had a test. Coincidentally our extra credit question asked what the hanyou's name was.

“You got it right? Good job Kisho.”

Kisho-Not exactly, I didn't get it right, apparently the correct answer was that no one knows the name of the hanyou, the records of his name were lost.

“Uh…well no problem that's a tough question, betcha nobody got it right.”

Kisho-Everybody `cept Kagome.

“Well you know she must be a-”

Kisho saw his father's eyes widen in mid-sentence, his jaw quivering in shock. As Inuyasha came back to his senses and his eyes turned to the confused look his son now had. `That name…I know that name, where?'

Kisho-Dad?

The teenager had grown impatient waiting for his father to reply and explain himself. What did he say? What had happened to make his father act this way? They weren't exactly normal people, but this was still out of the ordinary.

Inuyasha-Uh…sorry son it's just that.

His hand flew to his forehead; he closed his eyes and rubbed his temples, making his son wonder even more.

Inuyasha-Headache…must be all the um…pollen in the air. Nose is still sharp you know.

Kisho-Yeah I know…you still are only 700 years old. That ain't that old dad.

The two chuckled after a moment and Inuyasha wrapped his arm around his son's shoulders. Father and son, walked into their lavish home and went their separate ways as each headed up to their rooms. Inuyasha knew that no doubt Kisho was furiously working on his homework. He smiled to himself thinking of his son. `Just like her, isn't he?' He shook his head, he couldn't think of her…it was just too painful.

`I wanted to die a long time ago, to travel through the next world with her still by my side. But I couldn't…I couldn't leave her son like that, our son. She…she would have wanted me to stay, besides Kisho is what reminds me of her each and everyday. He's reminder enough for me.'

Inuyasha fidgeted with the beads around his neck, Kagome's beads of subjugation. He had longed to hear her voice, even if the only word she had to say to him was “Sit”, he'd still be grateful. The beads brought up long forgotten memories.

“Inuyasha you're such a jerk!”

“Wait Kagome! Don't do it! I didn't mean-”

“SIT!”

He winced at the memory, after almost five hundred years he could still remember the pain those beads had brought to him, and yet when he placed his fingers on them…he knew that he had never experienced such joy. Inuyasha had never thought that she would be in the future, he assumed that since she had died in the past that…she would still be dead. It obviously wasn't so…and his son had met her.

Inuyasha-Kagome, what would happen if I saw you just one more time?

The hanyou wasn't sure of the answer, but he was confident that it wasn't what he truly wanted. Inuyasha wanted more than anything for her to come back to him, to be in his arms. It would be difficult though, she probably didn't remember anything, otherwise she probably would have asked Kisho about the question and how he had gotten that answer. Inuyasha hadn't expected this to happen, if he ever wanted Kagome to come back to him he'd have to explain not only to her…but also to Kisho. His son had grown up believing that Inuyasha wasn't the hanyou pinned to the tree, but rather that he had been named after him…Kisho didn't know who his mother was. Not that Inuyasha didn't want him to know it was just that…it hurt Inuyasha too much to tell his son, and Kisho didn't pester him to know.

The sound of footsteps neared Inuyasha's bedroom door, and a knock resonated throughout the room. Inuyasha stood up from the bed to call “Come in”. The knob turned and his son stood before him, a somber and concerned expression up his countenance. `He looks so much like his mother, doe brown eyes and the tips of his hair. Too bad he can't have those ears at school, maybe then Kagome would remember.' The Taisho family was more than any of them seemed in their public lives, a family of demons in a mortal's world; they had to blend in and stay unseen.

Each of them had a special item that they would need to wear in order to appear mortal, when the item was away from them or they chose to end the spell then they would be in their demonic form once more. Inuyasha's item was Kagome's subjugation beads, and Kisho wore a necklace similar to that of his father's. The difference was that the Kisho's beads were aqua instead of purple, and his were not subjugation beads, meaning that he could actually take his off.

To further complicate things, since they were demons, they would stop aging at a normal pace at certain point in their life. Inuyasha had passed that age and was still looking like he was only 19 or so, which became a problem because his son had already reached that age as well. Knowing that it would seem awkward if Inuyasha who barely looked old enough to get married already had a 16-year-old son, they had to lie to everyone. Rather than being Inuyasha's son and Sesshomaru's nephew, everyone outside the family had to be told that Kisho was their younger brother as well.

Kisho-Dad are you okay?

Inuyasha-I'm fine, remember the pollen?

Kisho-That's just a cover up, I'm your son remember? I've got a sensitive nose too and if u smelled pollen, then why didn't I?

Inuyasha-`Cause you're still just a pup.

Kisho-A 500 year old pup, Dad?

Inuyasha-Exactly…

Kisho-Nobody was callin' you a pup even when you were only 200 years old.

Inuyasha-Caught again…you're good.

Kisho-Well I guess I don't get it from your side of the family.

Inuyasha laughed at his son's response; it was true…that was completely identical to the type of conversations that he'd have with Kagome. Now he was faced with a decision, to tell his son about the mother who died for him, and what was he going to do about Kagome? Surely Kisho wanted to have his mother know about him, and Inuyasha wanted more than anything for her to remember him. What would it do to her though? Would it kill her to remember what happened? Or was it such that time had made it so that she never even went to the past? Inuyasha sat on his bed and his son followed sitting next to his father.

Inuyasha-I just need to…need to find out a few things first okay?

Kisho-Fine, I can wait Dad.

Inuyasha-That's my boy.

Kisho stood up and walked out of his father's room, walking down the long hall to his own sanctuary to study once more. Inuyasha sighed in his son's absence, if Kagome was indeed alive then he had to see her. What harm would one little visit do? Well it could do a lot of damage, but if she didn't see him then there was no danger at all. He rationalized his plan, concluding on that as long as Kagome didn't see him that there couldn't possibly be any harm done to her. Night fell slowly on the summer sunset, Inuyasha crept out of his room and past his son's room, the teenager was sleeping soundly in his bed with books sprawled across his desk, Inuyasha found him to be an abnormally deep sleeper for being part demon. Hesitating to move on in fear that Kisho would suddenly wake up any moment and catch him sneaking out, he finally realized that he was the adult… `Never quite got a hold of that concept.' Inuyasha jumped the entire flight of stairs in one leap and after opening and closing their front door; he stepped into the inviting warm breeze of the summer's night.

Leaping over sidewalks, to the tops of buildings he followed the sight of the top of the Sacred Tree to the Higurashi Shrine. It was late in the night and he was sure that Kagome would surely be asleep by this time. Landing silently onto her roof it reminded him of how he used to come to see her. He caught her scent, it was strong and he could tell that she had just gotten out of the shower. He remembered of how it was when Kagome first became pregnant, telling her mother, grandpa and Sota.

Mrs. Higurashi-MY BABY IS GONNA HAVE A BABY!

Kagome-Mom…

Mrs. Higurashi-I'm going to be a grandmother!

Sota-I'm gonna be an uncle.

Grandpa-I'm too young to be a great-grandfather!

Kagome-Oh please grandpa, if I'm young enough to have a kid then you're young enough to be a great grandpa.

Inuyasha chuckled at his mate's remarks as he placed a protecting arm around her shoulders.

Mrs. Higurashi-So do you know if it's going to be a-

Kagome-Mama you know we can't get an ultrasound.

Inuyasha-A what sound?

Kagome-Where they use a machine to check up on the baby, honey.

Sota-Why not?

Kagome-Wouldn't somebody find it strange if they were giving a woman an ultrasound and then suddenly saw dog ears on the baby?

Sota-Oh yeah.

Kagome-Besides, I want it to be a surprise. It'll be much more fun this way.

Mrs. Higurashi-Okay well how `bout names?

Kagome-If it's a girl…

Inuyasha-Kagome Jr.

Kagome-If it's a boy…

Inuyasha-Inuyasha Jr. Look all done with names.

Kagome-Inuyasha!

Inuyasha-What?

The maiden glared at him with a seriously pure intent to use the word of subjugation so in a hurried attempt Inuyasha began to say a name...any name.

Inuyasha-Fine how about something, like I don't know…Kisho. Hey, that rhymes.

Kagome-Kisho…Kisho…I like it.

Inuyasha-What? Kagome I wasn't serious…

Kagome-Well I like it…

Inuyasha-Uh…sure…

He had honored Kagome's wishes to name their child Kisho; the name seemed to fit though. Inuyasha leapt off the roof and to the warmth of the stones below. He could see the light shining through Kagome's window; he paused momentarily to bath himself in the scent that he hadn't forgotten in over 500 years. Extending the length of each breath to savor the sweetness her scent held every moment that he was in her presence. Her silhouette appeared in the window and Inuyasha ran to the Sacred Tree in fear of being spotted, it was far too dark for her to see anything beyond the light of her room.

Inuyasha heard her footsteps retreating from the window and the creak in her door hinges hinted to him the actions she planned on taking. He quickly jumped to a higher branch among the comforting arms and full leaves of the God Tree. Kagome crossed the stone courtyard to the Thousand Year Old Tree, her raven locks gently blowing against her petite frame in the summer air. The maiden ran her fingers over the scarred bark of the mighty tree, pausing for a moment wile deep in thought. She sat on the stone bench beside the tree and for a few minutes Inuyasha couldn't tell what she was doing. He didn't care, there she was…the girl who had thought was dead all this time…was sitting beneath him and he couldn't even say a word to her. Inuyasha realized that his beads of subjugation were glowing a translucent, pale blue against his casual red hoodie and faded jeans.

He was fine as long as she didn't look up, but she did and he hid the necklace under his sweatshirt and continued to stare upon his mate. Her eyes were still that beautiful brown that had told him how much she loved him time and time again. Those delicate hands that held their son for the first time, and had handed him his newborn child. Her midnight black strands of hair that wrapped around her figure and blew against the night wind. The pace of her breathing and steadiness of her heartbeat that had lulled him to sleep countless times, they were all there…sitting before him. What he had longed to see and hear was finally there once more…and he was afraid that he couldn't utter a word to the beauty before him.

Inuyasha wanted to tell her that her death made life a living hell, that if she wasn't by his side for another second he was going to die. She was his life, and she had left…he had lost almost everything. If it hadn't been for the fact that Kaede had been taking care of Kisho that day, then Inuyasha sure would have had nothing left to live for. His arms ached to wrap around her once more, to inhale the closeness of her scent, to look into the endless depths of her eyes and explore her thoughts through her gaze. He knew that she couldn't simply remember, because it had never happened…he had never been freed…but if that were true, why was he here now? What had they done to time when Kagome died? What had time done to Kagome?

A shimmer coming from below caught Inuyasha's eye while he was deep in thought. It reflected off the moonlight, he couldn't see exactly until he moved around a bit. A purple orb glimmered around the maiden's neck. He mentally gasped…it was the Shikon Jewel, but this only brought up even more questions. If she had it now…did that mean she had just died and received the complete jewel? Otherwise how did she get it out of her body?

The hanyou shook his head…it was all too much to think about, he wanted the simplicity of knowing that his Kagome was alive and well, with the exception of her knowing nothing about him whatsoever. He could live with that for just a little longer, holding on until he could think of a way to get her to meet him, maybe he could evoke some sort of memory, if such a thing was to be found of him in her mind. Inuyasha decided he had better return home, it was late and work was torture on him. He took his last glance upon Kagome for the night and muttered one word to his beloved.

Inuyasha-Kagome…

Instantly her head shot in his direction, and he fled from the tree. Assured that he had not been caught, by the sound of confusion in Kagome's voice.

Kagome- Strange…I swear mind if you're tricking me again you're going to be doing some more studying to keep these silly ideas out.

Inuyasha silently chuckled at Kagome as he leapt onto her roof and bounded from building to building until finally reaching home. He raced up to his room, not caring if his son heard now, because what was the use? He son could no longer follow him to find out where he had been or anything of that nature. Inuyasha collapsed onto his bed and exhaled heavily, lying there for a few moments before turning over to dim the lights all the way down and remove his hoodie to reveal a plain black T-shirt. If his son was a teenager…what did that make him? He was definitely still a kid inside, a kid with a crush on his Feudal Era Sweetheart. He sighed… `If only if only things were that simple…but when are things ever simple for a hanyou?'
