Where I Belong
Disclaimer: I don't own the lyrics to "Little Black backback" or anything related to Inuyasha.
My black backpack's stuffed with broken dreams
20 bucks should get me through the week
Her eyes glanced around the room. Everybody was there, but him. "Miroku, do you know where Inuyasha is? I need to go back to my time for a couple days,"
"I think he went towards the Goshinkbou tree, Lady Kagome." Miroku replied. Nodding, she grabbed the large yellow backpack beside the door.
Never said a word of discontentment
Fought it a thousand times but now
I'm leaving home
Her feet padded softly against the dry leaves as she made her way deeper into the forest. The sky was clouding over, and she could feel the winds picking up. A few of the leaves brushed against her bare legs, swirling around her feet.
Passing by a clearing, she could hear voices. Brushing aside some stray leaves and branches, she went to pass through the area but froze. It shouldn't have been a surprise, not anymore. He'd done it so many times before, so why should now be different?
Here in the shadows
I'm safe
I'm free
"Inuyasha...."
She watched as he stood there with Kikyo. Every time she had her back turned....brushing some leafs aside, she had a full view of the clearing.
"Inuyasha, come with me." Kikyo held onto his wrists.
"Kikyo..I..." The leafs fell back in place. It was the same thing now, they always said the same thing. Kikyo would ask him to go to Hell with her, Inuyasha would pause and then refuse, Kikyo would try again to convince him. Kagome blinked back the tears in her eyes. She stood up slowly, brushing off her uniform skirt.
The winds picked up even more. He was bound to know that she had been there sometime soon.
She sighed as she felt the first few drops of rain against her skin. She picked up the pace to avoid getting soaked.
"Oy, wench!" He grabbed her arm, his claws digging into her skin. "Where're you think you're going? You told me you don't have another exam-thingy for another couple of months,"
"I need to go back for a few days, Inuyasha." She didn't bother to turn to face him. The rain started pounding around the two, and the sky was steadily growing darker.
"Hell no. We just got word on where some shards could be, and you wanna go home?" Inuyasha gripped her arm tighter, drawing tiny droplets of blood.
I've nowhere else to go but
"That's all I am to you, aren't I? A shard detector?" Turning to face him, she ripped her arm out of his grasp. He couldn't see it in her eyes anymore. The usual happiness...they were empty, instead. "Just take them, Inuyasha. Take them, and get Kikyo to help you..."
"Kagome...what're you say--?" She cut him off by tearing the small chain around her neck in two, handing him the remaining Shikon Jewel shards.
I cannot stay where I don't belong
"There's nothing left for me here, Inuyasha. Once Naraku's been defeated, you'll have Kikyo. Sango witll have Miroku, and Shippo will be staying with Kaede. I'm sure you can get Kikyo to detect the shards for you..."
"You can't go! After Naraku's defeated..." He grabbed her arm again, freezing her in her tracks.
"What then, Inuyasha? What'll I do then?" She spun around, her eyes now flickering with anger. The rain pounded harder around them, as the sky slowly became a stormy black.
"You'll stay here," He proclaimed, folding his arms over his chest.
"I don't belong here, Inuyasha" She whispered, as she took the final steps into the well. Inuyasha stood there, and watched. He watched the space where she once stood, as the rain drummed against the well's edge.
Two months pass by and it's getting cold
I know I'm not lost
I am just alone
Kagome stared at her geometry text book. It had been two months since she left Feudal Japan, and nobody had asked question. Eri, Yuka, and Ayumi had just come up with the conclusion that `attitude-man' boyfriend and Kagome had broken up or something; her mother figured there was some sort of fight; Jii-chan was more then happy to see the demon `exorcised'; and Souta...hadn't taken it so well that Inuyasha probably wouldn't be coming back.
Sighing, she cast a glance to the pile of books. Since she had returned home, she had to catch up on all her school work since well, awhile. Teachers were happy to see that she was starting to pay more and more attention to her studies, even though she wouldn't get into a decent college with her absence rate. One of the textbooks caught her eye...English. She laughed softly as she remembered when she tried to teach Inuyasha some modern-English...it didn't quite work out as planned.
`I wonder if they've defeated Naraku yet,' she mused. Inuyasha had probably taken them to find Naraku the day after she left, proclaiming that "since the dead weight was gone, they could move faster". Or something like that.
The old well hadn't been used since. Nobody coming in, or going out. Pushing away from her desk, she slipped on a pair of running shoes, and grabbed her coat.
She dusted off part of the cobwebs across the door handle. Pushing open the door slightly, she scanned the small room. It was exactly how she remembered it, except for she could sense something. By now they defeated Naraku, right? There shouldn't be any jewel shard in her time. She gave up all of hers to Inuyasha.
But I won't cry
I won't give up
I can't go back now
The old stair creaked under her weight, almost unable to support her. She slowly approached the well. She could sense...whatever it was, coming from there. Running her hand across the smooth surface, she stabbed her finger on...a piece of wood? No, all the wood around the well was smooth in her time. Running her hand along it again, she could feel the engraving.
"I'm Sorry."
Embeded into the y was a piece of the Shikon jewel. Her link back to the past. She pryed the small jewel fragment out of the cracks, earning a splinter or two.
Waking up is knowing who you really are
Inuyasha's foot swung limply from the tree limbs. His ears twitched, and he growled at the offending new-comer.
"Go away," He ground out. They had gone on to defeat Naraku, but everybody suffered., Miroku was spending weeks worrying about Sango who had fallen into what Kagome called a…come-no, that wasn't right…a coma, Sango had lost Kohaku, and Kikyo …
She stood there, watching him. Her clear blue eyes focused on his back, which was conveniently turned to her.
"I said go away!" He barked, turning to face the mystery person. She gave him a weak smile, and a small wave.
"You're back?" She nodded slowly.
"When did you come to my time, Inuyasha?" She asked him, walking slowly towards the tree.
"A couple of weeks ago, after we defeated Naraku." He muttered, his face flushed a light red. "It's...uh...good to have you back, Kagome."
"It's good to be back, Inuyasha."
Show me the shadow where true meaning lies
So much more is made in empty eyes
