Chapter Two: Melt
The newly formed group had been traveling together for a couple
months now. They collected parts of the Shikon no tama (the few
pieces they could find) and continued to have run-ins with Naraku's
incarnations and his other minions.
The group had set up camp to settle down for the night. Inuyasha
complained that they were wasting time and that they needed to keep
moving but eventually he too settled down in a tree overlooking the
group. He still didn't like that Sesshomaru had joined their group,
especially when Kagome treated him as a friend and not an enemy.
She would bring him stuff from her time and give him ramen. It made
Inuyasha jealous to see her around Sesshomaru and Inuyasha couldn't
help but growl.
Sesshomaru had no time to worry about what Inuyasha felt, nor would
he care if he did. Sesshomaru was lost in his own thoughts and
could care less if Inuyasha was growling at him right now. `What is
it that makes me so curious about the miko? Why do I protect her
like I do Rin?' Kagome had somehow grown onto the cold-hearted
lord. Whenever there was a battle going on Sesshomaru couldn't help
but protect her. It might have been the fact that she wasn't from
this time or maybe it was the way she took care of Rin and the
kitsune like they were her own children. Whatever it was, it was
confusing the hell out of Sesshomaru and he didn't like it one
bit.
“Hey wench! When is dinner going to be done? I'm
starving!” Inuyasha yelled, from the top of his tree, at
Kagome. Kagome was sitting by the fire cooking the ramen.
She sighed and said, “It will be done soon, Inuyasha. Please
be patient.” Kagome was in no mood to argue with Inuyasha and
she hoped that he would just leave it at that.
But of course, he didn't. “Kami, you're so useless! If Kikyo
were here dinner would be ready by now and we would have more jewel
shards. Why can't you be more like her?”
“SIT!” Kagome had, had it with Inuyasha. “You
know why I can't be more like her? SIT! Because I'M NOT HER! SIT!
And I never will be. SIT!”Kagome was now standing over the
crater that had Inuyasha's body in it. “That's all you care
about isn't?! SIT! It's all about Kikyo and the jewel shards! SIT!
You wouldn't give a damn if any of us died, would you?! SIT! You're
just a selfish asshole Inuyasha! SIT! SIT! SIT! SIT!
SIT!”Kagome took one last look at Inuyasha's hole and walked
off into the forest.
“Should we go after her?” Sango asked, worried about
her friend that she has come to love as a sister.
“No, she needs some time to herself so she can cool off and
think,” replied Miroku, even though he was equally worried
about Kagome. `When will you ever learn Inuyasha?' he thought
sadly.
No one had noticed that Sesshomaru had left the camp as well. Not
even Inuyasha as he pulled himself out of the crater and got back
into his tree to sulk.
<In A Clearing Away From the Camp>
Kagome had her hands wrapped around her knees, which were pulled
up, burying her face. She hated crying because of Inuyasha. She
hated how he made her feel, like she was nothing but a
reincarnation and a shard collector. She knew she no longer loved
Inuyasha like she used to but she could help but feel sad when he
treated her like nothing but dirt.
“Stupid Inuyasha. One of these days he's going to end up
alone because of the way he acts. He is such a child!” She
was getting frustrated. Frustrated at Inuyasha and frustrated at
herself. “This is the last time I will ever cry because of
him,” she promised herself.
Kagome then sensed someone coming up behind her and quickly turned
around. It was only Sesshomaru, who was doing a good job of hiding
his shock. `How did she sense me? I made no noise while approaching
her. This girl is more of a mystery then I first thought.'
Sesshomaru sat down beside Kagome and notice the saltiness in the
air from her crying. He hated that smell coming from her; it didn't
suit her at all. Sadness, in general, didn't suit this girl's aura.
It made him angry. He wanted to go back and tear Inuyasha apart for
making her cry. `Why do I even care?'
The two sat in silence for a couple of minutes before Kagome
finally asked, “Why are you out here?”
“I wanted to get away from the camp. Being around so many
humans at once makes my nose burn.” Sesshomaru replied in his
normal cold, uncaring voice.
“Then why are you here with me? I am human too and I probably
smell just as bad as the others do.” Kagome said, a little
angry that he would say something like that then have to nerve to
sit by her.
“You are different. Your smell is….pleasant. It's
nothing like the others.” Kagome was shocked to hear him say
that, let alone speak at all. Even if it didn't look like it on the
outside, Sesshomaru was shocked as well. `What am I saying? Why did
I even reply?'
“Thank you,” Kagome said timidly. She got a
“Hn.” in return. The pair returned to their silence for
a little while longer before Sesshomaru stood up and said
“Come. It is getting late and we are going to have an early
start in the morning.”
Sesshomaru stood there waiting for Kagome to get up. When she
stood, she stared at him for a minute. Sesshomaru was about to say
something to her but before he got the chance, he felt arms wrap
around his waist and a head on his chest. He was shocked! Kagome
was hugging the great lord of the western lands. What was even more
shocking was that he didn't push her away or kill her.
Having Kagome this close, Sesshomaru got a good smell of her scent.
She smelled like lavender and vanilla, but there was also something
else. She smelled slightly of winter. She smelled like the cool air
that blowed when the snow first lands on the ground. `How odd,'
Sesshomaru thought to himself. He had never met and human or a
demon with a scent as unique as hers. It was very calming.
When Kagome let go, she quickly ran back to the camp, leaving
Sesshomaru standing in the clearing, shocked. `I can't believe I
just hugged Sesshomaru….and he didn't kill me. I think I may
be losing my mind!'
Ironically, Sesshomaru was thinking the same thing. `What is this
girl doing to me? I must be going insane.' Sesshomaru stood in the
clearing for a little while, pondering what just happened. Slowly
he started to walk back to the camp.
Little did he know, the icy coldness of his heart started was
starting to melt.
