He couldn't believe it, didn't want to believe it. How could he have done such a thing? “I'm such a fool. I forced her into this and now…”
He sighed heavily, pacing around outside the small hut.

*Well I just heard the news today
It seems my life is going to change*

He entered the hut, still in a daze. It was almost unbelievable. That is, until he saw her. The elder miko was giving her instructions as the waves of pain came.
He watched the beads of sweat rolling down her face as he walked over and grasped her hand tightly.
Slowly, he felt the tears beginning to roll down his cheeks.

*I close my eyes begin to pray
Then tears of joy stream down my face*

He remembered the day well, when she had finally confessed her love to him.
“I love you, Inuyasha. Not Kouga, not Hojo, but you.”
Shortly after her confession, passion had ensued. It was wonderful, at the time.
Now, he almost regretted what they had done together.

*With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to this place
I'll show you everything
With arms wide open*

“She's only fifteen, Inuyasha. Childbirth may be too much for her, especially this soon.”
Miroku had told him this as soon as she went into premature labor.
“Liar! She'll be fine! She can't die, she won't!”
He would never admit aloud, but he was starting to think the monk was right.
He looked at her now, weak from the many contractions.
He took a deep breath and grasped Kagome's hand tightly.

*Well I don't know if I'm ready
To be the man I have to be
I'll take a breath, take her by my side
We stand in awe, we've created life*

Inuyasha's face fell fast as Kagome's body began to shake.
He felt her pulse quicken, knowing now that what Miroku said may be coming true.

*With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to this place
I'll show you everything*

“Kagome,” he whispered softly.
Kaede, who held the newborn child, quickly rushed to her aid.
“I was afraid of this. Her body is weak and the strain has become too much for it.”
Inuyasha's eyes widened in sheer terror, unable to believe what he had heard.

*With arms wide open
Now everything has changed
I'll show you love
I'll show you everything
With arms wide open*

“Kagome, you can't do this, you can't die!”
Kagome's breathing came in short, rapid intervals.
“You have to stay with me! I can't do this on my own!”
Inuyasha looked at Kaede, who held his newborn son.
“What if I lose him, too?”

*If I had just one wish
Only one demand
I hope he's not like me
I hope he understands*

“Inu…yasha,” Kagome uttered. Slowly, Inuyasha felt her hand grow limp within his.
Tears formed in his eyes, no longer born of joy, but of sorrow.
“It's all my fault! She wouldn't have died if it wasn't for me.”

*That he can take his life
And hold it by the hand*

Kaede said a quick prayer as they laid her body beneath the soil near the well.
Inuyasha, holding his son in his arms, leapt into the well.
He felt it was his duty to inform the Higurashi's of the events that had conspired.
He also felt he should raise the baby on his own, the way Kagome would have wanted.
The child in his arms cooed and smiled as the sunlight touched his face.

*And he can greet the world*

“Izumi,” he said as the name entered his mind.
The hanyou sighed as he walked up to the Higurashi shrine.

*With arms wide open…*
