The first thing Sesshoumaru noticed was drums but this was not the steady beat of war but the rhythmic beat of music. He noticed the gentle whistle of flutes next. Combined with the drums they created a lighthearted music that was pleasing to the ear and joyous to the soul. This was the kind of music that made on want to dance. And dancers were what Sesshoumaru saw.

Keeping himself downwind, Sesshoumaru his himself in a tree and watched the activities. He had never seen youkai dance before. Dancing was a human custom and had little purpose for youkai but this
pack and taken dancing and made it their own.

Sesshoumaru may have never seen any youkai dancing before but he had seen humans dance and none of them had danced like this. This seemed to be more hops and kicks than graceful glides and the partners only touched hands and nothing more. The dance looked easy, complicated, foolish, and fun at the same time.

Those that weren’t dancing were either playing the instruments or clapping with the beat as they laughed. Young pups poorly mimicked the dance outside the circle of dancers before either getting exhausted or snagged by a young adult who tried to teach the steps. Either way there was laughter and smiles.

Sesshoumaru had already suspected that this pack of wolves had no intentions of fighting, why would they travel with pups and pregnant females if that were the case? Still, he had to be cautious and even more so when it was obvious they weren’t planning on leaving but this dancing display soothed any fears of an oncoming battle. If this pack were planning war they would have been more secretive about their presence in their enemies forest but playing music for the entire world to hear.

Still they were in Sesshoumaru’s land and he was to see why and get them to leave if they proved they would be trouble. They hadn’t appeared to be trouble and still didn’t but appearances could be deceiving. He wouldn’t intrude now. He would let them have their dance but he would stay and watch to get a better outlook on things before making his move.

The pack was large. Not as large as Koga’s pack but still this pack was unusually large. Sesshoumaru was looking at well over twenty wolves. Most of them were young but full grown. But despite the largeness of the pack, all appeared healthy. None were dangerously thin or overweight. The pups that he could see did not suffer from malnutrition that most large packs suffered with but were growing strong and rapidly. This was a pack that knew how to take care of its own.

Sesshoumaru could leave now. He had seen all he needed to see but he found himself staying, rooted by music and laughter, and by the sight of a certain female.

She was among the dancers and were smiled glowed bright along with her bright green eyes. Her long hair was in a braid over her shoulder, he couldn’t tell it’s true color do the darkness of the night and from the light of the fire but he knew it was a red color. She was wearing a strange kind of kimono that hug her torso tightly, showing off her curves but flowed freely around her legs to allow movement. The green color suited her. It showed off her eyes and the creamy paleness of her skin. With her elegant features, she was radiant. Sesshoumaru’s eyes lowed to the sword that rested comfortably at her hip. Radiant and deadly, that is, if she knew how to use it.

Sesshoumaru was drawn to her, drawn by her smile, her beauty, and even the sword at her hip. He mentally scolded himself and forced himself to watch the activities but his eyes kept being drawn to her. She kept switching partners but seemed to be more focused on one. Sesshoumaru would have felt a twinge of jealousy but the male looked like her. He was a relative, nothing more.

The dancing continued and the dancers began to grow tired. The pups had fallen into the first willing set of arms and had fallen asleep hours ago but it seemed as long as the music played, the dancing would continue. One of the males broke away from the group, there were moans of complaints but he waved them off, laughing and lazily continuing the moves as he went to a water barrel and took a drink from the ladle. Sesshoumaru paid no attention to the male, not even when he went to lean against his tree. What Sesshoumaru didn’t know was that this male had the power of earth and when Sesshoumaru shifted his weight from one foot to the other, the male felt it.

He looked confused at first but slowly looked up. From the campfire no one would have seen the figure dressed in white but he was directly below him and could see him clearly. His eyes widen in shock and we went running back to the camp yelling “intruder.” The others seemed to scramble but it was actually organized. Most grabbed a pup and ran into the cave while others grabbed their weapons and attacked.

Sesshoumaru may not have understood the language but it was clear that he had been discovered. He dodged the first attack quite easily and it was obvious that he was stronger and faster than the rest of them but they had one major advantage. They had many. Sesshoumaru did not want a fight but it seemed that they were not going to give him a chance. They almost swarmed him and every dodge and attack Sesshoumaru gave he found himself falling into another. Understanding that he had to use everything he had, Sesshoumaru didn’t hold back. He didn’t draw his sword, after all, he didn’t want to kill them, especially since it was obvious that they were only trying to protect their pack but that didn’t stop him from hurting them. But every time he fell an opponent, there was another to take his place.

Sesshoumaru jumped back just in time to dodge a whip that one of the females suddenly lashed at him to end up having to fight another hand to hand. Despite their lack of power and strength, Sesshoumaru was impressed with their ability to work together and if he had been an inexperienced pup, Sesshoumaru would have found himself at their mercy but still fighting without killing was having its consequences. His body was covered in minor cuts and scratches caused by claws and swords and he was growing tired. Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes. It looked like he would have no choice but to kill if he wished to escape with his life.

Raising his right hand, a light appeared before his fingers but before he could summon his whip, blinding pain ran through his body. His muscles convulsed and joints popped. He couldn’t see and nor could he feel anything but pain. He didn’t even feel himself hit the ground before the world went dark.

The first thing Sesshoumaru became aware of was voices. He couldn’t understand the language but their words were melodic but the voices were harsh and full of concern. The next thing he became aware of was that he couldn’t move and after focusing a few seconds on his body he discovered that he was tied. How so, he didn’t know because he didn’t want to open his eyes. The headache he had was almost enough to make him return to darkness and his entire body ached. But he was captured and he scolded himself for underestimating these creatures and for not focusing on all of them. He didn’t even know who it was that managed to beat him and honestly, he didn’t know what it was that hit him.

The voices stopped and he heard footsteps approach him. Slowly, Sesshoumaru opened his eyes. His vision was blurry but slowly it cleared and he noticed that one of the males was kneeling before him. This was the one Sesshoumaru assumed to be the leader. He was rugged with his long, gray streaked, auburn hair that fell into his green eyes spoke of past wars. A scar ran down the side of his face and his tan skin was leathery from age. Despite his age, his body and presence demanded respect and submission. Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes. This would be the one who would decide if he would die or live. Instantly, his muscles tensed.

“Don’t struggle,” the wolf ordered. Sesshoumaru was surprised. He hadn’t expected this pack to be able to speak his language. Granted, it was rough and the words were slow as if the youkai wasn’t certain if he had gotten the words right but he was making an effort. “The vines have thorns. The more you struggle, the more they grow.”

“Why am I alive?”

“Because I wished it.” The youkai looked over his shoulder at the group behind him. Sesshoumaru recognized some that were in the group that attacked him. Most of them were covered in wounds that were being treated by two females. A few of the others had stayed out of the fight but he recognized them from the dance. One of them was the redheaded female he saw earlier. Her hair was standing on end and Sesshoumaru noticed energy around her. It had been used but enough traces remained to be noticed. He noticed that most were standing away from her and Sesshoumaru realized that she had been the one to bring him down and he knew that she had used to an electric attack but he didn’t know how and it didn’t matter.

All of them looked nervous and most of them were gathering
energy. They wanted to kill him and were preparing to do so.

The leader looked back at him.

“Why are you here?” he asked.

“I am the one who should be asking that.”

The youkai didn’t get anger but his brow narrowed in confusion.

“You’re in my land.”

The youkai’s eyes widened and he quickly stood.

“You’re land?”

“The western lands are my territory and you have trespassed.”

“Oh dear lord,” the youkai turned to his group. “Untie him.”

“But sir-“

“Do it.”

Sesshoumaru watched as two members of the group approached him. They both roughly grabbed him by his bound arms and pulled him in an upright position. A growl from their leader gentled their hands as they cut the vines around him and gave Sesshoumaru respected distance as he stood.

The two youkai stared each other in the eye before the wolf bowed before him.

“I ask for forgiveness.” He said. “We did not know that this land was claimed.”

“How could you not know? My castle is only a few hours walking away outside this forest.”

The wolf’s body stiffened before his eyes narrowed and he looked back at the cave. There was a red shield over it that looked a lot like fire but the young wolf that the leader called was able to pass through it without harm. He ran up to the leader and after a fearful look to Sesshoumaru looked to his leader.

“Yes, sire?”

“When you explored this territory, did you go beyond the forest?”

The boy’s eyes widened with awareness and fear before shaking his
head no. The leader’s eyes closed in frustration and he pinched the bridge of his nose. Then he slapped the back of the boy’s head before pushing him back to the cave with a swift kick to his rump. The boy ran back more out of fear and damaged pride than injury but Sesshoumaru noticed the boy ran faster to the cave than to his leader.

The rest of the group relaxed after the boy’s actions but they were all confused and a little nervous and they were all watching the two with fear.

“It seems my scout is an idiot.” The wolf cracked a smile. “Once again, I for forgiveness. If you wish, we will leave.”

The group behind them cried out in protest but a snarl from their leader quieted them. The leader sighed and looked back to Sesshoumaru.

“But I have a proposition.”

Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes.

“I don’t believe that you earned that right.”

The wolf nodded and looked back to his pack.

“But I must ask. My name is Kallan and we pack of central Ireland.”

Sesshoumaru quirked an eyebrow.

“Ireland?”

“A country far from here.” Kallan answered. “My two brothers and I share leadership and we have traveled for years looking for a suitable home. The priests of my country have grown powerful and have waged war.”

Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes.

“And you ran away.”

“It was fight would not win. I wanted to fight. More than anything but it was in best interest of the pack that we seek out a new home. My proposition is that you let us stay and you gain an army. We will help patrol and if you need assistance, we will be there. All I ask is let us have the cave.”

Sesshoumaru looked back at the others. He could tell they didn’t like it but they hated being kicked out even more. It was a good deal. If he needed help against an opponent, they would be useful and they had gained his respect. Sesshoumaru looked back at Kallan.

“I will do the patrolling.”

Kallan visibly relaxed before bowing in respect.

“Of course. Now on more thing.” Kallan looked over his shoulder. “Morgan.”

Sesshoumaru saw the woman he had seen earlier stiffen before making her way to them. She was more beautiful up close but Sesshoumaru kept his attraction masked as he watched her. Her eyes never left him and he could sense her nervousness. He could also tell that she wouldn’t hesitate to fight him if the need called for it. She reminded him on the wild female youkai he encountered but she had more control of her emotions.

“Milord, this is my daughter Morgan.”

Morgan bowed her head but then her eyes drifted to her father.

“What are you doing Da?”

“You are going to apologize.”

Morgan’s eyes widened.

“I will not. I did what was right. I protected the pack. He was
going to kill and protected them. Alban was among them.”
“You used too much force. You’re fortunate he isn’t dead.”

“I controlled, I knew what I was doing.”

Behind them the others snickered and Morgan snarled at them.

“Shut the fuck up. I saved your worthless hides.”

“Honestly Morgan,” One of them said, “we thought we were going to
be the ones being shocked.”

“Do you want me to?”

“Enough,” Kallan snarled, “now apologize.”

Morgan glared at Kallan before turning the dark look to
Sesshoumaru.

“I apologize for using too much force but I’d do it again.”

“Morgan!”

“I did right.” With that Morgan stomped off to the cave. They all watch as a ball of water appeared in her hand and she through it at the shield. There was a scream inside and Sesshoumaru’s brows rose and a couple of the wolves began to chuckle. Apparently that had been a shield made of hellfire. Though powerful the creature was forced to experience what the wall was going through. If the wall were hit, the user would feel the blow and a bruise would form. Its weakness was water and going by what he knew of the spell, Sesshoumaru knew that the user was probably soaked right now.

Morgan disappeared into the cave and Kallan looked back at Sesshoumaru.

“I apologize for her behavior.”

Sesshoumaru didn’t respond but turned and walked away. He was tired and his body ached. He needed to go home, take of his injuries, and forget about the sent the female gave off when angry.
