Chapter 12-Darkness Unfolds

Kagome buried herself behind a slightly wrinkled newspaper, peering over the top of it to scan the room for Naraku. The girl had been waiting in the lobby for hours and still no sign of him. 'Where the hell is he?' she thought to herself as she pretended with little conviction to read the sports page. Kagome didn't want to return to the group empty-handed, but it was getting late, and the desk clerk had begun to give her strange glances. 'Come on you stupid kumo! Show yourself!' The human looked up as Kouga walked through the set of rotating glass doors.
"Hey Kag. I say we call it a night. Obviously Naraku isn't gonna sh..."
The wolf youkai dove behind one of the couches just in time to avoid being sighted by the kumo himself.
Naraku strolled leisurely through the ornate lobby, not even acknowledging the clerk, who greeted him
dutifully. Kagome stared at him dumbly, intimidated by the youkai's malicious eyes and perfectly sculpted
body.
"Don't just sit there! Go after him!" Kouga's words brought her back to life. Summoning up the last of her swiftly dwindling courage, Kagome lay her newspaper aside before following after Naraku. As she walked, the girl tried to get her thoughts in order. 'Okay, all I have to do is figure out which of these flats is his. Then I can get the hell out of here.'
Kouga glanced after Kagome before slipping back out to the street. He hoped she would be alright. He
wished that the girl hadn't been put in such a dangerous position, but there was really no other choice.
Out of all the people in on this little stunt, she was the least threatening as well as the least recognizable. If Naraku had been frequenting Kikyou's club it was very probable that he had run in to Miroku, Sango, Inuyasha, and Kagura at least once. As for himself, there was no way the kumo wouldn't recognize him. Just about every criminal in the city knew of the wolf youkai cop who had a knack for busting illegal operations as well as not being quite clean himself.
"Did she make it in alright?"
Kouga gave Sango a curt nod, before turning to Inuyasha and Miroku who had been lurking in the alleyway. "Kagome's a smart girl. I'm sure she'll be fine, but we've still got to figure out what to do once we know where Naraku is."
Inuyasha snorted. "We get up there and BEAT HIS FUCKING ASS, that's what!"
"Well said." Kagura too emerged from the shadows. The woman had obviously not slept at all, not that
anyone could blame her. After your daughter's been kidnapped sleeping's not the first thing on your
mind. Still, the demoness radiated a fearsome energy, fueled by grief as well as rage.
Miroku smiled sadly at these two tormented souls. He couldn't imagine what they were going through,
losing those whome they loved so much. The pain on their faces was so real. It was heartbreaking.
"Don't worry guys. We've got to be careful with Naraku, but eventually we'll get both Kanna and Sess
away from him."
"Yeah," Sango agreed. "Once Kagome finds out his room level, there's no way we can fail."
Kouga sighed inwardly. He'd been in situations similar to this one, and there were a hundred things that could go wrong. Still, the ookami said nothing. These people had hope, and though hope itself was not enough, it was something.
Kagome froze as she neared the elevator. 'There's no way I'm gonna be stuck in that tiny space with a
fucking rapist,' she thought fearfully, but the girl had no choice. She couldn't let Inuyasha and the others down. Not now.
"Good evening."
Kagome surpressed a yelp as she got into the elevator. He'd talked to her! The very person she'd been
sent to spy on was starting a conversation!
"G..good evening." She felt uncomfortably hot as Naraku watched her through wine tinted eyes, an
unpleasant smile painted on his face.
"I haven't seen you before Miss.... ?"
"Kag...Katsumi," Kagome managed to reply. The kumo arched an eyebrow.
"Well its nice to meet you Miss Katsumi. Now tell me, which floor do you live on?"
"Umm..thirty.....five...thirty-five!"
Naraku's smile deepened until the tips of his fangs potruded from behind his lips. "I'm afraid that's quite impossible, Miss Katsumi. After all floor thirty-five is the location of my penthouse, which just so happens to take up the whole level."
Kagome gasped inwardly. She'd blown it. What were her friends going to say, assuming she got back to
them in one piece? 'Wait a minute! I KNOW where he lives now!' The girl bit back a nervous laugh.
"Oh, um... I ment level twenty-five. Sorry, I've had a long day." Kagome's voice was unconvincing, but Naraku bought it, or seemed to.
"Ahh, I see. Then allow me to drop you off." After pushing the right buttons for both floors, the kumo
lapsed back into silence. Kagome fidgeted anxiously with the hem of her skirt, praying for the elevator
to come to a stop. Seconds seemed minutes and it was only after Kagome had came out on level twenty-
five that she realized she hadn't been breathing.
Naraku regarded the human through hooded eyes, watching her scramble hastily out of the small enclosure. 'So,' he thought, 'Inuyasha wants to play games does he?' Not that it mattered. The kumo was actually looking forward to meeting the hanyou along with any of his little conspiritors. This could prove to be quite amusing.
~~***~~***~~***~~
"Rin?" Kanna looked up questioningly at her new friend. "What if he finds us?"
The human smiled. "Don't worry, Kanna. Master would never think to look for you here. He doesn't even
know this place exists." Rin led her demon companion through the darkened halls, until they came upon
a small door, about the size of a kitchen cabinet. It was in fact a dumwaiter, one of those funny little
structures that were used in Europe, years ago. Evidently the designer of the room had been quite taken with the western way of living. He had installed the contraption, decorating its mahogany surface with an intricate pattern of of golden fleur dis lis' and crimson serpents.
With a knowing smile, Rin pulled back the little door, revealing a pulley system and rather cramped looking platform. "Well this is it. Don't be scared, Kanna. I'm sure you'll be quite comfortable."
"It's... so small."
Rin laughed softly. "Oh, I didn't even tell you how this works. See, once you get inside, I'll pull you up.
Once I've given the rope 5 tugs, you'll see a little hollow at the opposite wall. I've already put some
blankets and a flashlight in there. There's some other things too, but if you need anything, I'll come visit
you every day after chores."
Kanna looked up into the dark abyss of the dumwaiter, skepticism written all over her face. "Are you sure
it's safe?"
"Oh yes!" The human girl patted her friend reasuringly. "Now get in, and I'll pull you up."
Reluctantly the youkai child scrambled onto the rickity platform. With a cheery wave, Rin gave the rope a
tremendous tug, sending Kanna up into the waiting darkness. As she was pulled upwards, Kanna reflected on the strange servant child. Behind Rin's innocence there was a terribly quick mind, and though she was most cheerful and kind, Kanna sensed a mysterious tragedy lurking there as well. She remembered something her mother had said once. "Everyone, no matter how happy they appear, has a
story that would break your heart."
~~***~~***~~***~~
It was nearly one o'clock. The moon, so luminous the night before, was hidden behind a veil of clouds, leaving the night terribly black. Inuyasha was thankful for this however. The darkness was a perfect blanket, keeping the group undetected as they made their way to floor thirty-five. Naraku's penthouse was located at the summit of the building. Though the complex was rather short by most city standards, for a metropolis as worn down as this one, it was quite an engineering masterpiece. Inuyasha, Kouga, and Kagura failed to notice this however, as they scrambled silently up the unsteady fire escape.
"Hey, are we almost there?"
The hanyou looked back at Kagura, several feet below. "Yeah I think so. We're at about level thirty-three, so it shouldn't take much longer.
Koga panted as he tried to keep up with the other two. Damn! He'd thought he was in good shape, but
both Kagura and Inuyasha had far outdistanced him. Sango and Miroku lagged even farther behind, their
mortal bodies unable to keep the rigorous pace. Kagome, who was the youngest of the group had been
left behind with a revolver and several spiritual spells to guard their escape. She'd proved to be an adept peiestess, and had cast many charms to keep the crew from being seen. The ookami watched with reluctant admiration as the demons ahead of him went even faster, springing from rung to rung as if it were nothing. Maybe it was determination, sheer willpower, that kept them going, but Kouga had another sneaking suspition. 'Maybe I'm just becoming another run of the mill fat-ass cop!' The demon chuckled despite himself. No, he couldn't manage that. After all, the wolf coudn't stand coffee, and doughnuts made him sick.
~~***~~***~~***~~
"Stupid, insolent filth! How DARE you let her escape!" Naraku's mood was fouler than it had been in years. He could simply not comprehend how the girl had managed to get out of his cellar. After all, the door had been locked, and she was far to young to have any demonic powers capable of breaking it down. There was only one other conclusion. Someone had let her out.
"Wretched, vile, loathesome maggots!" he fumed. "When I find the one who has freed the girl, I'll make sure they scream all the way to hell!" The servants shook, terrified by their master's relentless wrath. His curses filled every room, reflecting off the walls and echoing down the corridors. Rin hid in the kitchen, trembling in fear. She'd known Naraku would be angry, but she hadn't realized it would be to such an extent. The kumo despised being robbed, and in his oppinion the one who had released Kanna had stolen his personal property.
Finally, after screaming himself hoarse, Naraku retreated into his rooms, fully intent on finding the perpetrator in the morning. He couldn't let this incident get in the way of his plans. The kumo was sure Inuyasha would make his move tonight, and he would be ready. Still, it would have been much more interesting to have Kanna in the mix as a sort of... bargaining chip. He smiled to himself, imagining the girl's sorceress mother begging him not to kill her, saying she'd do anything he wished. 'Anything?' he'd say. 'Go kill Inuyasha!' Then sobbing, with tears streaming down her pretty face, Kagura would betray and attack the hanyou in a futile attempt to save her child.
"Master?" Naraku was shaken out of his sadistic musings by his slave's questioning voice. Sneering down at his personal whore the kumo lashed out, kicking Sesshoumaru in the ribs. the golden-eyed youkai cringed and scooted out of the way. Naraku laughed coldly. In just a few short days, proud and fiercesome Sesshoumaru had been reduced to nothing more than a groveling mutt. He no longer stood tall, but cowered, his eyes never daring to meet with those of his master. 'Perfect,' the kumo thought. He had erased all the defiance and ferocity from the inu, creating the ideal pet, eager to please, easy to control. However, one memory alone still haunted the black-hearted demon. He remembered the second time he had bitten down on Sesshoumaru's mark. How the youkai's eyes had bled red, and he'd let out a wail of ferral passion so great and monstrous that the darkest devil of all seven hells must have quaked in fear. Naraku pushed this thought out of his mind once again. That event had been a reprecussion, the last of the inu's wildness being set free. All that remained was a whipped and submissive dog.
There was a clank as Sesshoumaru shifted positions. Naraku watched him lazily, noting with satisfaction that the spiked collar he'd fitted his prize with earlier had not been ripped off. It was attached to a long, silver chain which was connected to one of the bedposts, assuring Sesshoumaru did not wander from his quarters. Not that the inu couldn't have broken the restraints, but Naraku had a feeling he wouldn't try. Sesshoumaru no longer wore the pajama bottoms he'd borrowed from Inuyasha. They were shredded and stained beyond salvation. Instead the kumo had got him something much better. It was made of the same black leather as the outfit Naraku had picked for their oral session at the club; a thong connected by chain garters to a sort of tight-fitting harness starting in a V at his lower back before going over his shoulders and crossing at the middle of the youkai's chest. Two buckles were located at the intersection, one for the straps. Sesshoumaru's thighs and upper arm were adorned with similar straps, all four of which also had metal fastenings.
Naraku grabbed his slave under the chin, forcing the unwilling inu to meet his sanguine gaze. "Ahh, you
are lovely Sesshoumaru, truly lovely. Despite your lowliness, I do believe you may just be the most beautiful creature I've ever seen." The kumo's eyes held no fondness as he spoke. "Now, listen carefully," he cooed. "Tonight we will be having some visitors."
"Visitors?"
"Yes my pet, visitors. Now Sesshoumaru, I want you on your best behavior. No matter what they say or how they make you feel, I want you to obey only me. Do not go with them or do anything they tell you. That is an order, slave, and should you disobey, you will be severely punished."
Sesshoumaru's whole frame gave a shudder at these words. "But....Master? I thought I was not to be seen by those who come into your house. You said my presence was not to be know by others."
Naraku sighed in exasperation. "Sesshoumaru mind your manners, and don't ask stupid questions. It is
no business of yours to know my reasons for anything. These are special guests, and that is all you need to understand."
"Hai, Master. As you wish."
"Good." Naraku released the smaller youkai's neck and began to walk away. Sesshoumaru watched him go when another thought suddenly struck him.
"M..Mast..er? Is..is she..the girl...alright?"
Naraku slowly turned. His exterior was calm, but underneath, the kumo was burning. He walked in measured steps towards Sesshoumaru until they were just inches apart.
"What did I just explain to you?" he whispered darkly. "YOU ARE NOT TO QUESTION ME BITCH!" Using all the strength of his rage he slammed the other demon into the ground. Pain reverberated through
Sesshoumaru's skull as his head was dashed against the hardwood floor once again. Naraku, not satisfied with this form of punishment threw the inu onto his bed. Straddling his waist, the kumo took the bit of chain that served as his slave's leash and wrapped it about his neck, grinding the links back and forth viciously as his slave struggled to breathe. Just as the new welts on Sesshoumaru's neck had begun to bleed, there was a deafening crash.
Naraku lept to his feet and dashed down the hall, coming out in the lounge area near the front door.
Glass was spread all over the rich carpets and plush furniture. His servants screamed as they fled into
the kitchens, unaware that the red-eyed hanyou before them had came for only one thing..a kumo's blood.
